View Full Version : Rider-Waite-Smith Study Group

Phoenix

Hey all

Ophiel and myself are interested in starting a study group about the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, and I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in participating.

Topics would include: favorite card, least favorite card, favorite waite version, the Major Arcana, the Minor Arcana, and others.

Please leave a message here if you are interested.

I'd be interested. I love my RWS deck and no matter how many other decks I get, I have a feeling it will stay one of my most used.

I just noticed this post. You can count me in, though it looks like you already have! I'd like to focus mostly on the symbolism, and anything else is fine. Would you like to take a card at a time, or leave the forum more open?

I've just started a private study of the Waite, and I'd be open for a study group.

I would also be very interested in especially looking at the Major Arcana card by card, paying attention to its details and its historical and iconographic connections to other cards.

Oh yes...count me in also.
I have had this deck for years ...it's my "trusty ole pal"...it is very well seasoned let me tell you....but I love it, and I have studied the deck in depth a couple of times in study groups, and would be happy to go through it again and also to help out others who are not quite familiar.

Cheers
Kazz

Can I be in the group? I mean, you have to know up front that my *main* concern here is the symbolism and esoterica. I don't read cards in the same manner of most people in this group.

Silverlotus

I'd like to be included too. I've never used a strict RW clone (like Universal Waite), but I have used many RW influenced decks. I'd really like to explore the symbolism of RW in a study group. (Pardon my rambling, I'm just recovering from a wicked cold.) :)

Forgive my ignorance in this, but how do we get started? Should I get a clipboard and petition, stand in front of my local library, and collect a certain number of signatures or something?

I would also like to get in, and I am a newbie too. I use the Robin Wood deck, and it seems to suit me better. But I have a RWS deck and can use it to refer to. Shouldn't cause a problem, I hope.
Thanks.

Hi There.

I see that these messages have been posted quite a while ago, but if there is still a study group, I would love to be able to join up.

I am a newbie to Tarot in the sense of actually trying the readings myself and I really want to learn as much as I can from people whom have also studied the cards.

Please let me know if I can still join up your study group.
Thanks!

Hi everybody

I have a RWS deck and would love to join you all. I have never completely delved into the symbolism of this deck and would very much like to get to know it as best as possible with the help of all of your knowlege.

Where abouts are we up to?

Hi Silverwitchi

I have posted in here previously and the threads others have started up have always been interesting. I havn't seen that much action in here recently; maybe I havn't dropped by enough.

Why not get it all going again? Start drawing a card every day or two and post your initial thoughts. Others will readily contribute I am sure and in a matter of time, you will get to learn them. I am doing that with the Phantasmagorical Theater Tarot and it helps me to post my understandings, however relevant they are to anybody else. People are interested though and we are getting a good little Phantasmagoric community going. Take a look at my posts in the General Section so you can get some ideas from my methods of doing it. Don't worry about saying the wrong thing; just go with what you think and your intuition says. Others with more experience will drop by and give suggestions and share their experiences of this wonderful deck.

Look forward to seeing your posts

Yaboot

**Enjoy yourself - and the cards**

**If there has been a lot going in this section guys, I appologise ... maybe I don't pop in enough**

I think this study is still active, but has probably not been touched in a while. If you look through the forum and add your views to the threads that already exist, that should get things moving again. New threads might boost some energy into the group. The RWS is understood by many people here who use the system, if not the actual deck, so there are always many interested in the symbols of Waites deck.

Nice avatar Sienna.
Hope it all goes well

Hi,

I'm interested in a study group as well, I just purchased the raider waite deck, and I'm doing the 3 card spread. I don't really understand what each card is suppose to represent. I'm actually quite confused in what the 3 card spread is suppose to represent, I thought it was the past present and future. Does anyone know a good book I should get?

Jade.

26-05-2006, 01:30
Hi :) Jade! For a 3-Card spread I like the 2-1-3
First card in the middle, second left, third right.

Rather than get 'locked in' to position meanings
I use general indications:

1) Situation
2) Background
3) Prospects

That way the cards can combine and show you
what they mean together, with nice interaction.

Eden Gray is the best author to get to know for
learning this deck ~ she has everything it takes.

Best Wishes!

Jade. You can use past, present and future if you wish, or just about any other set of 3 cards that you feel appropriate to the situation.

If, for example, the answer is time-related, you may well feel that past, present and future would suit the positions.

There are many other combinations, e.g.;

Mind, body, spirit.
1st, 2nd, 3rd person, that is... me, you, them.
Thesis, antithesis, synthesis, that is... the idea, the opposing idea, the outcome of the marriage of those ideas,

The list is endless.

There are lots of useful books in regards to the RWS, and luckily the best ones, that is those that contain the most accurate information, are online and free.

Love and light to all

This entire sub-Forum *is* the study group. Just start posting your questions or concerns.

You (the moderators) keep saying this, but the problem is that using an entire sub-Forum as a study group means that none of it is organized. Yes, one can use a sub-Forum as a study group, and I'll admit I learn a lot from the disorganized conversations in this forum and others, but the one time I did an organized study here, I discovered that I learned a lot more than I could from simple conversation.

So I'm up for a group jaunt through the RWS, and I'm even up for getting the ball rolling - though I don't want to give the impression of any skill. So, I'm going to make a proposition. Why don't we each take on some of the responsibility of moving the group along? One person can focus on symbolism, one person history, one person traditional meanings, one person intuitive, etc and then we can rotate for each card?

For the actual order, I find that the majors are generally well covered on the forum, but it is harder to get a comprehensive grasp on the suits and courts, so why don't we start there and go back to the majors later?

Takers? Thoughts? Addedums?

PoledraI like that idea, and fully agree that the minors and courts give more trouble and hence need a little more discussion. Maybe to make it easier, do it by numbers (i.e. all the 6's) and by rank (all the queens) in one thread. fewer threads and possibly more participation. Just a suggestion.

Good idea! I think I personally would want to start with a general discussion about each of the suits as a whole first. Then apply them to the various numbers. And finally maybe go back through each suit and look at the story arcs? Does that make sense? That way we can look at the interaction of suit and number for the cards and then how the fit together as a whole.

Ok, now I'm getting excited! Is there anyone else interested?

Hello. I would be interested in this study group. I do use this deck quite frequently. Matter of fact I use this the most out of my many decks. This one speaks to me at moment. I feel in tune with the Rider-Waite. I find it easy for me to interpret. I would like to be in study group. But, this is my second time posting. I hope I can contribute correctly with these threads that I am still learning. Thank you. wwahine

Peacestartswithme, I am ready to start exploring. Lets start a thread starting with the Ace of wands and work our way through, then to the other suits. or we can do Aces, then twos, threes...what do you think?

peacestartswithme
14-06-2008, 15:31
We can start anyway that feels best. It makes it so much easier when you have someone else learning along with you. Just let me know how you want to go about it and we can just dive right in. Starting with the Ace of Wands might be the best. Do you want to do one or two cards a week, etc? One major, and one Minor at at time? Anyway works for me.

Sassyjackal
14-06-2008, 15:54
Let's start with the minor cards: Wands then Cup, Swords, Pentacles, then Major. I was thinking a card every couple of days. We could start a new thread for every card, that way if someone wants to comment on a card we can keep it separated and go back and forth. What do you think?
