Whilst at Oxford University, a friend I met there showed me how to make dowsing rods out of coat hangers (Now, Oxford has no decent coat hangers left! Hey, what can I say? Bending metal is addictive!) but I'm not quite sure how to use them!

He showed me how to find walls, but you can see them anyway, so it was prety pointless. (But funny!) What else can you 'program' your rods to look for? And how do you know what they're gonna do as a sign when they find what they're looking for?

Any help would be great.

I'm not an expert on dowsing, but you can use it for finding just about anything. I even saw a program on t.v. where this Native American woman helped find a couple's lost son in the woods, by using dowsing rods on a map.

My dowsing rods are made of brass that I got at my local hardware store. Bending them wasn’t too difficult. I would suggest that you wrap the rod in some kind of padding or use padded pliers so you don’t risk scratching the rod. Scratches won’t prevent them from working but it just doesn’t look as nice. I also slip the handles into small brass piping, or straws, which allows them to turn easier. I can find buried electrical lines. My neighbor (who totally thinks I am off my rocker) was going to do some digging. I got my rods out and told him where the power lines were. He didn’t believe me. He dug there anyway and told me he was sure the power lines were three feet over. Well, he almost cut the power line and could have lost his life! I have use the rods to find lost objects, too.

You have all piqued my interest in this type of thing. A local shop is sponsoring a workshop on pendulums, dowsing rods and levitation in a few weeks. I may just attend to get a better idea of what you're talking about! Thanks!

Kiama,
Dowsing rods can be made to find a bunch of things. I had read this book on Dowsing, where this lady was mentioning various forms of dowsing; one of which involved pendulums. However, we're not talking about pendulums here *grin* Dowsing rods are most famously used to find water. Personally I have no need for using them as I can find what I want on my own; but other people have used them with great success. Commonly things like a forked willow branch or a witch hazel are used in 'water witching'. I don't know if this was any help to you. Lol.

If you are interested in dowsing, there is a dowsing association in England that runs beginner's courses. Might be worth checking out.

Cheers,
