View Full Version : 78 DW: Four-Card Layout (0,1,2,21) Chap. 1
Hi, all! Glad to have you all here!
[The following thread refers to a chapter from the book, 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. Please refer to the thread "78 DW: F.A.Q.'s" for Frequently Asked Questions.]
The first chapter of Rachel Pollack's 78 Degrees of Wisdom introduces the reader to the idea that the Major Arcana are representative of a psychological/spiritual journey that a person can take. Ms. Pollack further condenses the process down to just four cards, which she lays out in the following pattern:
---00---
-1----2-
---21---
00 = The Fool
1 = The Magician
2 = The High Priestess
21 = The World
The Fool and The World make a vertical line which represent unity, or wholeness, both in a state of innocence and as the culmination of the journey. The Magician and The High Priestess make a horizontal line which represent duality in many forms: male/female, active/passive, and so on.
Lay out these same cards from the deck you have chosen to use in this study group. What dualities or similarities can you see in the Fool/World pairing and the Magician/High Priestess pairing? How is it similar/different from what Ms. Pollack discusses?
Any other comments or ideas about this chapter are also welcome, of course!
Peace,
Melvis
Hi Melvis,
I just saw your post and since I am absolutely fascinated by the book (I started studying it over Christmas and am overwhelmed by all the deeper meanings of the cards explained in it) I thought that I would just jump in now.
To me the diamond is almost like a shrine, a temple and I imagine us humans INSIDE it, i.e. in the middle between the four cards. We stand somewhere between innocence and wisdom, black and white, active and passive etc.
Does that make sense? Does anyone else agree? It's just an idea, an image I have in my head when I look at the four cards. (I am using the RW deck, by the way.)

I got the book yesterday and have finished only 3 chapters.
I use the Robin Wood deck.
One of the first things I notice is that the wreath the dancer in The World appears to be leaping through is a "zero". So, the Fool's quest has come to completion, perhaps to begin the journey again.
The differences in The Magician and The High Priestess are very evident in the Robin Wood Deck. The Magician is working inside in a bright light, the High Priestess outside at night with only the full moon for illumination. His right hand (active) is in the superior position, her left (intuitive) is superior. He has tools (wand, sword, pentacle, cup) to work with, she has only knowledge (a book - what is known, and a crystal ball - what can be known).
Yet in their differences, there are similarities: both figures are flanked by dark and light 'pillars'. His are in the form of black and white candles. Hers are in the form of black and white trees. The masculine and feminine, the light and the dark are balanced in both The Magician and The High Priestess.
0-1-2-21 are all Fibonacci numbers.
True AmounrA, but what point are you making with this statement in relation to the topic?
/me is puzzled, do I miss something very obvious here?

Yes, thank you for the offer, Kaz! I was on the chat w/Solandia last night, and she enabled the attachment thing ~ so I hope to attach the scan ASAP (I have to rescan it as a GIF or JPEG, the original was a BMP). Anyway, it's so true about the nicest people being right here :)
Offer still stands if it doesn't work out.....

Kaz, I am going to have to e-mail you the scan of my cards. Thank you in advance for helping me with this (I think it was too big a file, or something).
You will find the scan of goddess tarot here:

^^^^BUMP UP^^^^
This was inevitable... ;)
I am so excited to start this group, I wonder if I will do the right things or I will get sc*e*ed up in the end... I hope you'll find some use in the messages I will post. As for me, I'll try to have fun and learn in the process... :)
Ah, I wonder if you ever noticed this: say "POLLUX" aloud, and then "POLLACK"... :D *LOL*
(*Skillfully dodges the vegetables and contundent items he's being thrown at*)
===>>>
In the vertical line, the two characters are possibly kids, and both are hermaphrodites.
-> The Fool child is merrily dancing on the verge of a cliff - a leap, maybe a "fall" into the unknown - in a landscape at dawn (beginnings), his figure standing out on the warm orange sky. He's just about to fall down, but he is looking upwards and is not aware of what is going to happen. The dog puzzled looks at him, a bit insecure (how cute :P). His expression is careless and lighthearted.
-> The World child is dancing too and as a similar stance to that of the Fool, but he's going is the opposite direction. What is more, he is jumping from the earth towards the infinite/universe, trying to reach a further, higher condition: this thanks to the experiencing of the all-that-is-one on an actual level. From the LWB: "The Cosmic Dancer understands and responds to the music of the stars and spheres, realizing the he/she is an integral part of that symphony". He/She stares confident and relaxed into the eyes of the beholder, with a mature and serence expression.
The Horizontal line presents a young man for the magician, and a lady for the High Priestess. Their oppoite nature is evident.
-> The Magician is charmingly walking in the open air on a green meadow (he belongs to an Outer Realm, what is without), while the High Priestess is in-doors, hidden in a deep cave (she resides in an Inner dimension, what is within).
-> The Magician is in motion, walking towards the beholder, his white eyes staring peacefully, his hands waving, his cloak and garments flapping; the black-eyed High Priestess is still, sitting, her hands resting on her legs, gazing with a focused expression, veil and dress gently flowing.
-> The Magician seems quite... tanned (yep, I miss the beach  LOL) and on his back, right on top of the hill and above his head, a radious sun is rising, beams all around; the High Priestess has got lunar complexion, and her pale figure is crowned by a silver-shiny triple Moon, while she guards the opening of the cave to the twinkly starred sky behind her.
(I AM SO TIRED!!!!! It is past midnight, and I was supposed to write an e-mail... ;) *LOL* Well, I'll do more tomorrow, editing this ...)
Hi Pollux! There is no right or wrong way to this :) ... there is simply what it means to you and what you see.
After reading your post, my question is ... do you see a connection between these 4 cards? if your answer is yes, what connection do you see between them?
Okay... uh... my computer ate my homework!
Unfortunately, this is true... I had spent quite a bit of time at work typing this up, then when I went to submit it, I wasn't logged on anymore. :( Lost the whole thing! So, anyway, now that I'm at home (and have fewer interruptions) I'll try re-typing it.
I've been using the Rider-Waite deck for a while now, and just picked up the Röhrig Tarot, so - since I need to study these new images - I thought I'd use them for this study group. Disclaimer: Other than the LWB that came with the Röhrig deck, I haven't read any specific books on this new deck. So, if I'm waaay off on my interpretations, you'll have a good idea of why! ;)
I'll start with The Fool. The image on the Röhrig deck is, as with all of the images, very different from those of the RW. While I feel that the RW deck shows The Fool as a youth of indeterminate sex (neither male, nor female) the Röhrig Fool is definitely shown as both. The image is of a face, which is divided vertically in half. The left side (the observer's left) is, to me, a masculine face, while the right is feminine.
The male half appears happy, carefree and very nonchalant. An alligator’s head, with gaping jaws, is emerging from the top of his head and overlaps, but is not actually eating the head of a tiger. Though at first glance it does appear to be being eaten. I think this may reflect a similar meaning as that presented by the dog in the RW Fool, that of nature being subdued (or "improved") by man's conscious.
The right half of the face also appears to be happy, though not as nonchalant as the male side. On her head, her hair seems to blend into a cap of feathers, which curves outward ending in a bell, like a jester's cap. The feathers seem to me to be reminiscent of the Eagle that appears in several cards of the RW Tarot. In fact, feathers appear in several cards of the Röhrig deck as well. The Eagle depicts strength, and rising from The Fool's head, perhaps strength of thought or character.
These two halves of The Fool's face seem to depict the very duality that diverges into the next two cards. The duality of male/female, conscious/subconscious, material/spiritual. The left, masculine, half of The Fool leads directly to The Magus on the left side of the diamond. The right, feminine, side of The Fool flows into The High Priestess.
The Magus is depicted as a male who has his eyes wide open, perhaps studying the world around him. His concentration is directed outward at the reality which surrounds him. A nova-like burst of light is issuing from his crown chakra - this also seems to indicate that his energy and consciousness is directed outward towards the material world around him.
The High Priestess, on the other hand, is depicted as a woman with her eyes closed, as though in deep meditation. To me she appears to be concentrating on learning inner truths, exploring herself, her subconscious and through that the superconscious. The moon and a net of energy appears to be converging on her crown chakra, indicating her connection to those higher powers and truths she is trying to understand.
These two characters (The Magus and The High Priestess) reconverge in The World. In The World, a female figure is depicted against a backdrop of a field of stars. Chains that are shattering into pieces surround her. These chains are intermingled with a diaphanous substance. This could depict the breaking of the bonds of the material world through the power of the subconscious mind. Her eyes are closed and she is exerting no physical force on these chains - she doesn't need to because, as she learned while she was The High Priestess, her mind alone can free her. She is also handling - and coexisting with - a large pale snake, though she is exerting no physical effort to do so. I'm not certain about this image, but it seems to say to me that The Magus has learned how to effortlessly coexist with nature. And finally, she is partially clad with a light gown, which appears to be cut from the very fabric of the Universe itself - she no longer needs the trappings of the material world as she is covered by the superconscious.
Okay... I'm afraid this ended up getting a bit longer than I had expected, but this deck really seems to have some images I can "see" very well for myself. This is how these cards appear to me. I would appreciate any input that others might have on these cards from The Röhrig Tarot.
Trogon that was really interesting! Makes me want to run back home and pull those cards out of my Rhorig and look at them! Unfortunately my dog ate my homework too :P and I still need to post the Cosmic Tribe stuff before I can indulge in such delightgful play! I really look forward to learning more about the Rhorig. Looks like you do not need the LWB afterall ;)
Seriously, these exercises can get long, but as you can see they take you really in depth. They are a fabulous way to get to know your deck, and if it is not a RWS clone or based, you will also learn more about those differences. We will be seeing quite a bit of that since you are using the Rhorig, Pollux the Gill and I am using the Cosmic Tribe.
WOW TROGON!!!! GREAT!!!
I loved your post!!! I am so happy this is going on!
Unfortunately I don't have the deck, so will go hunting for pics online.
I happen to have some cards though - because of a Rohrig-obsessed firend... *LOL*
I'll try to upload them when possible.
But I wonder if you can scan them, and upload them here or online to your web-space if you have some (or you can send them to me or Kaz too - right Kaz? - and we will take care of putting them online).
UFF!!! I want to get back to this!
But now I am too tired. Tomorrow morning I'll try to post some more. ARGH! I havent started to compare the cards! AAAHHHHH!!!
This exericeses take a while, but focusing is great, you detect details and grasp ideas you generally ignore when simply using the deck and looking at the cards by chance. I am looking forward to my next three weeks of holiday to get into this more seriously...

Lay out these same cards from the deck you have chosen to use in this study group. What dualities or similarities can you see in the Fool/World pairing and the Magician/High Priestess pairing? How is it similar/different from what Ms. Pollack discusses?
[/B]
Im using merryday, all cards from merryday can be seen at www.merrydaytarot.com
In the Merryday Tarot the Fool card also is the Wizard card, the Fool aspect is pretty much the traditional image of the young man about to walk off the cliff, tho his dog is missing and he is carrying a divining rod. He is walking toward the left of the card like most traditional fools.
However behing him there is an image of a wizard walking to the right of the card, this is supposed to represent the fool after he transcends the world card, he is more serious and focused in his step, and hes a transition from the majors to the minors
The World card is very different, its the egg of knowledge. It pictures a baby, a 3d checkerboard, the river of life, planets and the sun inside the eggwhile the 4 elemental guardian watch over it to make sure it doesnt all go out of control.
There really is very few similarities between the fool/magician and the world, unless you look at the fool as the innocence of a newborn babe, and the wizard in the upper left corner looks very muck like the wizard in the fool card. So it doesnt really follow what Pollack is saying, but of course the MerryDay deck I think does what she is stating in the Fool/Wizard card alone, starting whole and ending whole, tho both the fool and wizard are male.
The Apprentice (Magus) card has him just inside a cave. Behind him we can see the road he traveled, with greenery on the sides of the road and a mountain in the background. It is dawn.Inside the cave he has all his tool, but he is picking his wand off the tree instead of directing his energy like a traditional Magus. He is actively working to gaher the tools he needs and to learn what he must know, and he faces slightly toward the left of the card
The Oracle (High Priestess) is deep inside the cave. She sits on a moon throne, with the left half black being supported by a white dragon, and the right half white being supported by a black dragon. Her floor is a black and white checkerboard, and in front of her boils a cauldron with a yin yang on it. Inbetween the 2 points of the moon on the throne hangs a veil of pomegranites and palms, blocking the view of the purple dusk sky beyond. She holds her scroll and keys to herself, not actively doing anything with them. Her face faces us, but her knees point to the right.
These 2 cards more obviously follow Pollacks pattern. The Apprentice is Male, by the outside world, actively gathering his tools, at dawn. The Oracle is Female, deep inside the cave, sitting passively in her throne, at dusk. The duality is represented all over the oracle card as well.
:THP
Pollux thank you so much for the links! I really need to get work on this .... my wedding seems to be getting in the way of my tarot studies *LOL*
i am using the hanson roberts deck :O)
i was thinking of how my system applies to the card,,
and a thought occured to me,
what is between 1 and 2? 11 reduces to 0 leaveing the justice card in the middle of the magican and the high priestress.
hence puting the justice card inthe middle we get the bridge of why we are here fore , and what aspects we are.
it is our choices and conquences of those choices (at the deep level karma) why we manifest here on earth as human beings.
but before we acquired karma we decided to manifest for the sake of manifesting being a fool.
the key here is to see how they all make pattern,
0 to 11 justice, (10 is the perfect number i read tonight for it is completion, so 11 being the next step not deciding to return to the beginning but extending pefection is the higher parrel magican (saw in that thread aout parral numbers) and we know 1 plus 1 makes 2 which makes the highes priestress. so we know the justice card if not the higher meaning of the high priestress is sure numberologicaly related.
and the world card is an higher parrel of the justice.
so the ultimate spiritual lesson is we are respnsible for our conquences, from deciding to maniest, to our fooish mistakes, to living with our woman self, and our male self when your a woman.
all adding, subtracting aside and taking out the justice card we can see various things, but before we do, there is red in the fool shirt, red in the high pristress shirt, red in the magican cloak, and red in the robe of the justice card. yet no red remainsin the world card, just a pure dress. and the bindings around the world wreath are not even red but a WAIT A MINUTE it shows yellow with a red marker down the bindings giving it a orage,or washed out red effect. and the bull in the bottom left corner has red eyes.
i took out the justice card. :O) to my weak eyes, it look like a young boy grows up to be a man, and a woman grows up to be the world figur from the high priestress card. yet that would be wrong for both the fool and the world figure has blond hair, so they are one and the same. :O)
but the magican and the highpriestresss both have dark hair.
there is also blue scarf (ashcot aka freddie off scoobydoo) on the fool, a blue shirt on the magican, and a dark blue on the highpriestress. and the blue on the world card appears to be space surrounding the wreath.
trying not to duplicate any informaton rachel says, the magican looks like he is waiting for light to hit his energy rod so he channel it to the earth. yet giving the receiving hand and the right hand giving, woudln't it be reversed, UNLESS THE MAGICIAN IS LEFT HANDED making his right hand the reciver and the left hand the givingenergy and he is sending energy. but where is he sending it to ? the high priestress is waiting for a message by her eyes to hit her psychic center, so the energy the magician is sending out will his wfe.
basiclly the magican is the sender, and the priresress is the reciever, and the fool s both, and so is the world figure,
bibically (yup where we go)
the fool is the son and the daughter manifested, thus god manifested, while he world card is mother earth. only biblical stuff i can think off eheh
the world card i thought was just a woman in the aura,, but the aura around the wreath tells us it is the world aura he godess is more reptive, (the wand closest to the priestress is higher)
her magician wand tell us she give us more energy then we admit.
one might say ,,we are the god manifes and eath is the goddess manfiest
and the fool being the spirit is in all three of us manifested son, daughter, and mother , made possible by the divine spirit of fool.
we also see innerchild, male, female and superconscious aspects,
the innerchild being the essence part of soul in the fool,
which get defined half into the magian, and half into the highprestres essential to exist on earth ( we are looking for our twin soul eheh )
which after we die and leave mother earth becomes a soul once again without the coding in the fool
(ego, astrology how the stars influeced , karma, numerolgy of our names and time we are born, nameology, )
and naked soul once again.
putting the justice back into the center..
before we become the world figure, we judge ourselves and take the best with us leaveing the mortal coil for part unknown
or recarnated again as the fool.
also putting the justice card , one sees the definin aspects of our indiviualizatio is our consciences which stems from our soul levels which also stems from our past life experiences, and our astral lessns we learned before we came to manifest .
putting the justice in the center is the scales are besides the priestess giving us the spirit to see people hearts (we all do ,, we just ignore that which we don't see)
and the ability to read people mind if we really open,, and dont judge, and don't hold back and don't fear
the crown pointing to the fool say by listening to our spirit we are essence the fool as there is no logic, no emotions sometiems, about why we get messages from our soul to do things,
(reversin them our crown centers would be focused on the lower fool, the ego part which huants us during many lifes, this is when we hear voices,,and demonics influences)
so to listen to our spirits is being the fool
so to listend to the reverse spirit the lower ego and surounding darkness would be even more foolish.
and her feet, the robe, are directy above the world saying to us be grounded at all times, .
also on the hanson roberts, the justice card is asexua, meaning justice applies to all sexes not just one.

Hi!
I've tried the Diamond Layout with two decks (RW and Rohrig). My feeling is:
about the horizontal line - OK (but I agree to swap left and right), about the vertical - I felt neither a true opposition between 0 and XXI, nor the reflection of a spiritual jorney (my strong feeling is, that XXI is not the end of a jorney, but is closer to a beginning).
Than I tried a different kind of this layout:
---0---
-1---2-
---3---
Does it look odd? With real deck it gave me some deeper understanding... It is not perfest, 'cause the vertical line seems to be not complete. But it shows for the Fool three possible ways for a jorney - Yan, Ying and middle way. I decided to put cards like this, following my understanding of the Tree of Life. Probably somebody feels the same? Try!
P.S. The numbers are still Fibonacci :)
Best wishes!
Trogon never sent me the other scans... *LOL*
Anway, I decided I would conclude my report that was not finished so far...
And also to answer to Jewel's questions.
:)
The Fool card is set at dawn, or dusk... End and beginnigs of journeys - the common sense of the dog, the "comfortable" way of thinking, keeps it safe, while our restless kid is too eager to dance and celebrate life to bother and watch his/her steps.
He/She is carrying four objects: a dagger, a stick, an orb and a cup. Interestingly they seems to be all made out of wood, a rather "unrefined" but natural and "raw" material.
They represents the four elements, and actually they are his tools, te keys he'll be using along his jouney - yet they are only seen as toys, pbjects to play with during this deasty dance.
The Fool is also wearing a shirt, featuring the Moon and the Sun and the stars (unconscious, conscious, superconscious?) - yet they seem simple ornaments, not exploited yet.
This sum of details points to the wide "potential" in the figure, possibilities that are not provoing consistent actions though, possibilities that are ignored from the fool, to focused on his personal party to recognize the true nature of the elements hee possesses.
The following cards instead, show our Fool, still, but progressing through the light of the three light-bearers mentioned before.
He/she takes off his/her clownish garments, and takes on a candid shiny white robe, something that looks like a ceremonial uniform of a magician.
The overwhelming light of the Sun opens his eyes: he takes a glimpse of the real powers he has, and the methods to exploit them. His accessories therefore turn from common wooden toys to transparent precious Crystal tools of magick - glowing with lucidity and will, the newly discovered, active, masculine trasformational or growing path.
His self-awareness is also increased - the Sun is on his right, the Moon on his left - he/she knows what he/she is, wants and needs.
After sun-light bathing, The Fool wears a feminine gawn, and devotes himself to the realm of the night. The Priestess sits stiff, calm, steady, in the womb of the earth.
She contemplates a starred sky on which a the Moon light is throning. Every outer elements detached from her being (tools, cloaks and all) has disappeared - instead the only outer expression is the water she is shedding from the veil.
The Four Elements, or rather the tools symbolizing them, have shrinked into a cross that is throning on her 4th Chakra (I think *LOL*), glowing in sympathy with the Moon beams.
No other exterior element: her workings are interior, inner, silent and deep; the four tools have been interiorized. This is the passive feminine way of the contemplation.
After coming out and then sinking in, for the Fool its time to dance again. But now he's dancing on on the Earth, freed from any bond or necessity (no more law of gravity, no more danger to fall).
Now he merrily walks in the universe, at the light of the infinite Stars. As an hermaphrodite, he's ntegrated the masculine and feminine part he was simply "wearing" before he journeyed through the previous 2 stages.
A Cross still reminds us of the elements, whose awareness has been developed, and that now form a golden tiara crowing him - they are finally integrated in his/her own being.
Does this make sense?
It made more sense while I wrote it offline, before posting it... *LOL*
Pollux this is excellent! Totally makes sense! I love how you use the progression of elements through your observations. I really need to do my CT diamond work and post it. Be patient with me I promise I will do it *LOL*

Basically, it is what Rachel Pollack discuss when she consider the three rows of seven, and considering the first as the development of the ego, and the second as the "Turning Inward" one, with the discovery of the unconscious and the inner urges we have, and the greater pattern we belong to. The journey continues on a higher plane, that of the integration of the unconscious with the conscious - and your image of not wanting to go back is neat!
I bet we'll have lots of talking to do in the other thread, about the rows (Chapter 2 I think).

Even though authors tend to say that right hand (or the dominant hand anyway) is sending and left hand the receiving, this is simply a silly rule. Most people just develope their own sensitivity, and sometimes the hands change too (often my right hand is clearly receiving, while the left sending, like right now that I am writing I can feel that). not really tarot-related, but I just thought I added... *LOL*

I had not thought of the idea of soulmates, and we generally say that opposites attract each other... The Yin/Priestess and Yang/Magician are definitely two of the most opposite things i can thing of. :)

OK.I've started to read the first few pages of 78 DW and I found this:

Turn to page XII,line 10
"My partner Edith and I.......(Edith remained in Europe, where she teaches....)
Does it mean what I think she means?
P.S. Please,I'm not homophobic or anything,just curious....

ARGH!!! A not-related post in our Study Group about the book!!! *LOL*
Well, I am homosexual, and actually when I read it, tomy very own surprise, it didn't cross my mind. I just took that "partner" as meaning travel-mate. Edith was her partner during the trip - they were travelling together that's all... IMHO.
Now, I mean... What deck will you use Joywalker?
Be quick and finish the chapters, I really want to read more in this Study Group! *LOL*
And Jewel, don't you worry - there are better things to do in the first times of marriage I guess... *LOL*

Just finished the 1st Chapter!
Just WOW!! So much info in there.I'm just like a sponge, receiving all these new and yet interesting ideas, from this chapter.
The African Tarot that I'm using is quite similar to RW.Not much to compare.
The Path that most of us are going through seems to be like this:
Innocence========>Split/Confusion============>Unity
(Toddler/Child) (Puberty/Adult) (Mature/Old)
Those 4 cards really summarised everything!
One sentence leaves quite an impression on me,"many ppl agonize over every decision......once take an action in 1 direction, they have lost the chance to go in all the other directions......"
There's always this inspiration quote that says :"YOu only get to live once...",it makes me think that maybe that's why the idea of reincarnation is so welcome by people. It gives them the chance (unconsciously) to able to choose another action again.
"Once we lose that innocence, however,we cannot simply climb back......".That is so true.I think most self help books mentioned that when we are toddlers,we do not fear anything and love so unconditionally and freely. How I wish I can be a 'Fool'/Toddler again, but it's easier said than done.
Maybe that's why I love to sing the Toy 'r' Us song:" I don't want to grow up,I'm a Toy'r' Us kid!" :D
That's what I've got from reading this chapter.Hope it did not sound too far fetch! :P
