View Full Version : Aggressive Shufflers

They pull, and slam, and pick, and bend. Argh! It does my head in! It is as though they are taking out their sexual frustrations on the cards!

A friend of mine damaged one of my Giovanni Casseli cards with her mean and rough handling of the deck. I was like 'Please.... be gentle'; TO NO AVAIL! The King of Swords is now all sort of raggedy. I know that card automatically when I turn the cards over. She was like, 'i'll get some glue'. Please don't bother. I'll have a new tarot deck instead you careless wench!

Arghhhhhhhh!

Anyway, I will be breaking the fingers of the next person who damages my preeeeeeeeeeeeecious decks...

I've been here before... It was SUmmer 2000, and a new-found best friend decided to shuffle my Robin Wood deck like you would in a casino type place... Thereby bending the cards beyond all repair. (This friend also became a very active member of the forum for a while. :D)

I was very upset at the time, but now I am fine with it. My deck has what I owuld call 'character' and whenever I see it's battered condition, I remember all the good times I had which gave it that condition! I remember the friend who bent it and the friend who spilt his lager all over it, and the friend who smoked too much cannabis whilst I was reading for him thereby making the deck smell like cannabis... And of course I remember the little sister who's biro accidentally slipped into one of the cards... (NOt too much, just enough to notice, but it doesn't detract from the pictures.)

The only reason I tolerate damage to my deck though is cuz it is my only reading deck. If anybody did the same to my other decks, I would have something bad to say, cuz they're collecting decks, and I never use them... Some are also rare and expensive...

Oh Centaur... that's a real shame! Very sorry to hear about this. Have you considered doing the shuffling yourself? Most of the time I do the shuffle myself, then the querrent can cut the deck however many times they want, then hand it back to me. Right now, I've only got one querrent who gets to shuffle the deck herself, but she does it by multiple cuts anyway, so no harm is done to the deck. Just something to think about I guess... Has she picked up that replacement deck yet? ;)

I introduced some people to my cards with 'anyone who does riffle shuffling can buy me a new, expensive deck'. That worked! Also it helped that I only allowed them to handle decks I didn't have much of an attachment to.

I have bought myself a second Fey so I can show it around without fear- I would be so cross if anyone hurt it, wouldn't be fair on the person.

Actually, I'd be cross if someone treated my playing cards like that never mind my Tarot cards.

I am also one who does the shuffling of the decks, while asking the querent to casually ruminate on the query and small talk with him or her. Then I fan out the cards and have the querent choose. I mean, I guess the whole point of having them shuffle is to put the energy of the query into it, but if the person does the choosing from anywhere in the deck, I think it serves the same purpose. Of course it doesn't solve the lager problem or the biro???? forgive me, don't know what that is and how it can get IN a card.

Peace!

I always let the sitter shuffle. However I know that none of them are ‘used’ to shuffling a Tarot deck, so I watch them carefully.

If they are ‘aggressive’ (usually compensating for insecurities) I simply say, “Perfect!” and reach across the table for the deck, “Let’s meld our energies on your question…”

Have them cut and proceed with the reading.

It’s simple and direct.

A biro is a pen. Don't know if you have htem in the US, but w have htem over here in the UK for sure... And litle sisters, Tarot decks, and biros do NOT mix.

I solved the lager problem by laying the cards to dry over a radiator, then using lots of incense to make them smell nice again. Tip: Don't do readings for drunk people!

A biro is a ball-point pen. It's one of the most common makes of ball-point pens you can buy in shops. The cheap kind of ball-point pen - not the Dupont kind. You have them in the States, but they must be marketed under another name.

That reminds me. DON'T let my brother anywhere near my cards. Ever. He's 36 now, yet I still don't trust him with my stuff since over the years he has (in error and with well meaning):

Ruined my favourite book 'Books, books, books' that I got when I was 2 and kept PERFECT I tell you until he got his sticky mitts on it (me age 9, him 3) and put indelible biro marks, sticky finger prints and general yuck all over it. And he tore the dust cover and broke the spine as well;

Nicked my coloured pencils out of my room and lost/ gave away about half of them

Made my favourite Piatnik Patience pack all sticky

Took my records and sold them while I was at college

Broke my water jug

Pulled my coat hanging rack off the wall

Broke a kitchen drawer

etc etc etc.

Younger siblings X decks = 3 of Swords

I love this!!
Definitley be using that into next time I use my cards. I use mainly my RW deck when reading for others, I know it's easily replaced.... But i love it! I hate to see others being rough with it!

Bright Blessings and light hands ;)

Agressive shufflers are:
- too excited to get their read
- dont have fine motricity (cannot control the strenght of their fine movements)

So, after getting some cards "identificated" for good, I SHUFFLE, they cut, I FAN THEM, they GENTLY TOUCH the cards they want, and I PICK THEM FROM THE TABLE AND DO THE THING.
Please undersand this. I only have 1 deck and no intentions of buying a new one.

Another card-friendly shuffle method is to spread the cards face down on a table and have the readee mix them around with one or both hands to put their energy into the deck for the reading. They can then pick however many cards out for the reader, if you want. I think it is important for them to handle them, if possible. Just cutting them dosn't put much connection in, to me. But I agree, get rough with my cards and you have to deal with me!

sorry to laugh at your misfortune centaur, but that last bits hilarious! i dont blame you, but then again i cant talk...my mom always yells at me for shuffling too fast. LOL. Wow... you must be one fast shuffler! I find that cards seem to fly out whether I shuffle fast or slow. Although, I don't mind so much when they fly out if I am using them, but if it is someone else... they had better run. })

Hehehe. Shuffle-Rage! In my original post, the shuffler in question used to rub the cards together... she would put one chunk on top of another chunk, and rub them together until they were as one. It was HIDEOUS to watch! As a little update, she has since moved to California, US... so all those Californian tarot-readers had better watch out. :)

It is amazing how much damage one person can cause in a short period of time. It was much the same with newbie painters- kiss the brushes goodbye as they ground them into uselessness.

The only person I might consider letting shuffle my cards right now is my daughter , because I know she is not an idiot. Or perhaps you, Mr. Centaur, if you could reach that far...

All others are banned.

And I have always wondered how the querent is supposed to know when to stop shuffling anyway, if they are not very intuitive.

I went to a Tarot class recently and was HORRIFIED to see the teacher shuffling like this! "How can she rub her cards together like that"? I was thinking.

Before I really got interested in Tarot (and when I used to have readings done for me) I was always very ginger and respectful of the cards when shuffling. Obviously not everyone is the same! I've not done many readings for others (family only) and I'm always watching the shuffle. So far... so good!

I allowed others to shuffle it. I would then cleanse and reset it. I soon decided that I was uncomfortable with their shuffling. Thus my decks are in wonderful shape. I would hate to think of a mangler touching my Golden Tarot or Visconti, etc. --Tao

hee hee! I find this thread to be very entertaining.

And funny...because I am one of those agressive shufflers!

The decks I use constantly have this great bowed shape (ahh...kinda like the cresent moon...) due to my rifle shuffle!

Yep. That's right...I am one of THOSE people...

I admit that I don't let anyone else shuffle my cards...only cut them(they would just end up being way too gentle with them anyway...my cards are very used to the abuse!)

*Incidently...I am always way careful when I am shuffling anyone else's deck...I would NEVER do that to someone else who takes good care of thier cards! Oh...and the Faeries Oracle never gets rifled...or I would be in serious trouble...

Most of my readings are done over the internet so I don't have to wory about it to much but even when I am in the same room as the person I am reading for I like to do the shuffling. First off tarot decks for the most part are big and unwieldy for people who arn't used to shuffling them (and sometimes for people that are as well :) ). Also then if a card gets hurt there is no one to blame but myself.

Here is an advantage I had not thought of to only reading for myself. I never have to worry about someone bending up my cards by aggressive shuffling. Now, if I could get the cats to stop stepping on cards when I'm reading on the bed...

Like Chronata, I'll 'fess up as an "aggressive" shuffler. My family used to play card games all the time, so I don't see my shuffling as aggressive so much as efficient. My cards aren't bent, they are quite flat, but flexible. I only read with a couple of decks regularly ... so I guess they like it!

Oh, I don't like it when other people shuffle my cards, because I've seen how some people shuffle! :D

how many reading analyses have been cut short due to the pitter of indiscriminate paws over the bedspread necessitating the piling up those bendable cards?

I am also an agressive shuffler with my regular reading decks - which is why I have more than one copy.

With my other decks, and other people's decks, I am much more gentle.

I've also had to grab the cards on the bed fast - not just from cats, but from the 170 lb dog who gets up on the bed too.
He is so big, I have to keep an eye out on the cards on the dining table when I'm reading too - they could be slimed at any moment!

Usually i ask the querent to spread and mix the cards all over the table and put them back together. I prefer this method, because I think that it allows for a better mix of the cards, let alone reversals.

I never had any damage problems with this method.

I have to rifle shuffle my Buckland Romani because it came out of the box bent, but it bends the wrong way!! I've tried to flatten it under loads of weight but nothing seems to work. I am reluctant to admit this but I just can't shuffle!

I have quite small hands but I don't think it's that alone. People seem to shuffle with such ease and grace but when I start all the cards seem suddenly to stick together. Or they clump or simply tumble out.

When I shuffle myself, I just do as Aun described but I don't think that looks as good as a real shuffle. I found a little video on the web about shuffling but have not been able to master the act even so.

I would pobably ask the querent to shuffle.

Well, I used to let the querent shuffle the cards, ande then one evening I was reading for several family members one after the other. The daughter bopped in and I handed her the deck. While merrily shuffling away, she confided that she had just had her palms hennaed, and oops, now it was all coming off on the cards. Yeah. Oops. I'm so sorry your henna didn't stick. On the other hand, maybe you should have told me you had red goop plastered on both your hands before you grabbed my deck. Now I make everyone wash their hands right before doing a reading, and I usually shuffle myself. I used to think the querent had to shuffle the cards themselves for the reading to be accurate. Now I do Internet readings, and they turn out fine, so I don't think it matters at all.

when you mentioned aggressive shufflers, i immediately remembered an incident last night when i was really feeling bad because i had a huge fight by my bf and incidentally, i was shuffling very loudly...to which i fon't usually.

then the cards laid out had a negative reading...could it be that because i was feeling negative that the reading was also negative???

please enlighten. thank you.

Usually I let the client shuffle the cards because this is a good way to take away their nervouseness or to give them the feeling they are an active part in the reading process.

However, I don't permit ppl to brutalize my decks (ok, I usually have 2-3 copies of each of my most used readings decks such as RW, Thoth, Legend, Lenormand, etc). Luckily, most ppl cannot shuffle tarot cards in a rough way because:

1) ppl don't play so much cards today with real cards

2) Tarot cards are usually bigger than Standard German playing so ppl have to shuffle them slower

3) I never ever do readings for drunken or drugged ppl

However, until now I haven't found a way to prevent my furry felines from stopping jumping on the table and spreading themselves out on the cards when I do a reading in the living room.

I am too soft hearted to block them out the room (besides, they will run havock with the door) but the trouble is (apart from strawing the cards around the whole room when they jump on top of them) they also flex their claws out of shere pleasure on the cards and my orange Persian Benny is very good at drooling and slobbering when he feels absolutely happy (which he is when he can follow me around and take part in nearly everything I do).

I always wonder when I pay a visit to a friend: she has 3 cats and a dog (a Spanish windhound aged about 6 months) and they sit politely in front of the table and watch us doing card readings without ever interrupting us.

I despise aggressive shufflers!

I riffle shuffle, but I'm very careful and never get my cards bent.

Until I let someone else riffle shuffle for a reading.

Now, I shuffle unless I know the querant's shuffling habits. Yeah, it seems a bit grabby and possessive, but it keeps my cards from getting damaged. ;)

If you simply hand a deck to a sitter - you've invited disaster. The cards are considerably larger than a 52-card deck. Many folks have trouble shuffling a regular deck! And you've just handed them an old limited edition...okay maybe not...

You may tell them to shuffle and cut. Remember, reading for another is a relationship -it's an event - that it's a conversation and not a monologue - that it is about rapport.

So you demonstrate, "Just shuffle like this" (I demonstrate a 'running cut' that neither bends or mangles the cards) and how not to shuffle the cards.
Show them.

Then give your clients a little credit. Then if they begin to abuse your cards you simply say, "Excellent!" and reach over and take them back.

It's not a big deal.

It's really about learning to communicate with others while holding a Tarot deck...

Yesterday...I used my brand new "old" IJJ from Waddington Press...35 years old...I had carefully put fanning powder in a paper bag and dropped the cards in as singles. Then I shook the bag, and, finally, dusted off the excess powder and shuffled and shuffled.

Somehow, I forgot to take a few cards out of the bag, crumpled the bag and threw it away...Suddenly I realized a card was missing. Found the bag.

EEK! At least 10 cards were still in there and

The Ace of Cups was the only one bent completely in half. My first "Old" deck and I screw it up ...despite my wonderful ripple, poker-shuffle.

So...I smoothed out the ACE...(Ace of Cups....cool, huh?) ...and told myself that the Ace of Cups was telling me to begin using this deck to read and to simply love the deck and love myself and the sitter.

I had a reading scheduled yesterday afternoon. I took this deck and forgot about the "bent" Ace and, after shuffling my riffle shuffle, handed it to the sitter, who said, as she struggled to try to emulate my shuffle...

"I never could get the hang of this...I always bend the cards..."

"That's ok...just do it this way......"

She gives them a kind of "cutting" while she gently holds them and then,

I say..."That's great!!....Now cut the deck and we can begin...."

I always let them handle the cards. I do use the time to talk...we created the question as we discussed the shuffling.

God knows who all used these cards....they were definitely old and used, but none were bent until I did it myself. So the universe gave me a bit of a message ....

When I do face to face readings, I do offer to let the querent shuffle. Before I hand over my cards, I mention in friendly way "that because of their size many find when they try to riffle shuffle, the cards don't mix well, can fly all over, or they clump and bend. So you might want to just give them a good mix like this". I show them the hand to hand random cutting method I use. I then add " if they prefer I can shuffle then they may cut and pull their cards."

So far most everyone has respected my request. When I have run across someone who doesn't, I politely retrieve my cards from them finish the shuffle, have them cut and pull, and make a mental note not to offer the shuffle to them again.

If someone wants me to read with of my hard to replace decks, I just shuffle myself, if they ask why, I'll tell them why. When you tell someone it is OOP and the last time you saw that deck for sale the price was $$$, they understand.

hmmm well I have only been reading for a week and well what i do is I shuffle the decks but I let them cut it so they sort of divide the cards and incorporate their energy into it (I have them cut it twice, once three times for past present and future and a second to integrate)

I riffle shuffle my cards, but I also bridge them back the other way to counter the first bend, and I haven't had a problem. In high school, my friends and I were constantly playing ERS (Egyptian Rat Screw), so I always carried a deck of playing cards with me. Over time, I saw that if you riffled without a bridge, yes, the cards would become curved, but if you always bridged the cards back into place, they would retain their original form.

One form of shuffling I've never liked is the "lay them all on the table and mix them up" style. I've found that this can cause the edges of the cards to fray, because when you use your hands to mix the cards up, you can end up pushing two cards against each other, and this can cause the layers of paper to split at the edge. Obviously, if you were reading for someone who couldn't shuffle another way (small hands, arthritis, etc.) this would be best, but as a rule, it's not my favorite.

Take each card and gently bend it the other way, using your fingers and thumb to slowly work down each card on the side you want it to go. Then, once all that is done, when you're shuffling, shuffle a few times on one side, then turn it the other way and shuffle it a few times to the other side, and continue on this way. If you shuffle first to one side and then the other, you'll never have a bent deck. It will always lie flat.

If I haven't explained that legibly, just let me know and I'll see if I can do better. :)

Came back to add that I riffle shuffle all my decks except for the Tarot of Dreams, which is too big and too stiff for me to shuffle that way. Nothing wrong with riffling. I don't bridge them, though, because that does give them a bad bend, especially if you don't shuffle on one side and then the other like I described. It scuffs them badly, too.

Marina

That why i only use older decks to read to others. AND...decks that i have a spare copy, or that are so worn that they already look a bit damaged...i found it makes you look like a more "experienced" tarot reader, even if the cards were actually damaged from being carried around and shuffled randomly all the time xD

Anyway, keep your damaged deck and use it to read to others...then you don have to bother about it being shuffled by frustrated people.

I agree; that's how I do it. When I get a reading from friends, I'll riffle, but more gently and slowly and make sure I don't bend the cards too much, but for my own decks, riffle shuffle all the way! It makes for way more manageable shuffling in general in the future.

My most recent deck is on some thicker cardstock so I actually have to cut it in two or three just so I can riffle shuffle any part of it :( I hope that with enough use I'll be able to do it with the entire deck- wear it in, you know :D

None of my decks are bent or anything bad- the bridge back really does help~

I used to shuffle the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot with a hand-to-hand method (because the card stock is so thick and stiff) but since I started using the riffling shuffle with the Women's Tarot, I used it on the NOVT as well. It still works, but if I shuffle too many times my fingers begin to ache.

(I do agree that that BRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIP sound is so addicting. :cool5:)

Whenever I read for someone, I let them shuffle it as best as they can, and cut the deck. Then I lay out the cards.

I don't know what any of you mean when you're talking about these shuffling methods . . .and don't worry about trying to explain, me dumb, me have to see video evidence :D

I just wanted to say that I don't mind people looking through my decks one by one (I have a two friends who do that when I get a new one - I hand it to them, they dutifully go through the cards one by one ) but I just can't bear to see people shuffle my cards! I'ts not that I don't want them to get "hurt", it's just that they're so clumsy! And also, when I read for others, my readings turn out munted when the other person shuffles the deck. I shuffle. End of story.

You know.....I cannot shuffle decks at all!...most of my decks are too large for me to handle, let alone try and shuffle them!

My Favole is small, but I'm sooooo afraid to bend them!?

That leads me to another question:

HOW do you 'break' new decks in to where you CAN shuffle them?

All mine are stiff and straight...

I like aggressive shuffling. i riffle shuffle my cards and they bent all the ways the want to. that gives them a feeling of an old friend. i have a deck of playing cards I had since I was 7 it's been played with for sooo long that it's really bended and the paper of the cards is soft and oily, like an old friend :D

Haha- my first deck is like that~ I love that feeling soooo much~! I know some people want their decks to be very nice and in tip-top shape, but as long as they're not actually creased or the corners bent or anything, I'm all for it :D

Yes Of course I not saying that the cards should be damaged in any way, I just think that giving them that personality of your own hands is great and there is no point in trying to keep them as they come from the manufacturer, there is no charm in that.
