View Full Version : Grimoire on 10-RWS
I figure this has been discussed before.. here i go
According to the 'Book of Ceremonial Magic' that Waite wrote, he somehow despised that old grimoires.. so what about the grimoire in the card 10 -RWS? Thats what the wheel seems to be actually..
I apologize, i realize this should be on some RWS study group; also made a mistake with the title
The four figures at the corners of the cards are standard symbols for the authors of the four books of the new testaments, so it seems logical they are writing those books.
The four figures at the corners of the cards are standard symbols for the authors of the four books of the new testaments, so it seems logical they are writing those books.I don't think the 4 Animals are "writing" their own books,
but to me it looks like they're all reading the same book.
If we want to pretend, it could be a book of pictures with
all of the Tarot cards created by Pamela Colman Smith! :)
What do you think? What is the book they are all reading?
These 4 Beings don't have pen and paper, they have books!
Big books already bound together and with hard covers. :)
Take a look:
http://www.learntarot.com/bigjpgs/maj10.jpg
I always feel happy when I see them all together like this,
just relaxing and looking at their books. Maybe they have
a special group where they study together. Just like we do!
What would you like to think of them as reading about?
He he- the study group of Mathew, Mark, Luke and especially John, have their open books (as in open versus closed re occult) to show Pamela that her Grimoire or grammer wheel was correct. There is a pointer towards The Book of Revelations (attributed to John). Or Should that be the Book of Revolutions? The Hoof, Claw, Hand etc are holding the pages down from winged wind. Thats how I see it anyway. ~Rosanne
Maybe they're looking at porn.
I always thought it was the Book of Life.
I don't know if Waite was all that interested in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John, but I've been searching for his answer all day. I know this, these books are all open-an open book means an open mind. Maybe they're storing guidance from akashic records or getting 'blueprints' of karmic lessons for the next lifetime. Probably it's the interpretations of the symbols on the wheel. It's getting very frustrating that I can't find the meaning at the time it was drawn. I'm going to be very disappointed to find out it's nothing more than to remember to keep a tarot journal.
There is a pointer towards The Book of Revelations (attributed to John). Or Should that be the Book of Revolutions?John the Apostle wrote a Gospel. The Book of Revelations
was by someone (or something) hundreds of years later.
Woops Fulgour, I should have said "Traditionally attributed to Gospel writer John." I knew that latterly it has attributed to St John the Divine somewhere between 60 -90 AD- some maybe 40 years after the crucifiction. I don't think Pamela would have been aware of the latest info, tho' I am not sure.Humbly I bow down. ~Rosanne
Woops Fulgour, I should have said "Traditionally
attributed to Gospel writer John." I can heartily recommend The Book of John to anyone,
simply for its beauty. So-called Revelations ~ I dunno.
But this probably wrecks my hopes of having some fun,
playing with the pleasant notion of what is being read.
:) Don't they all look happy and relaxed, though? :)
Yes Fulgour, they do look relaxed. I am sorry to point elsewhere, but I have a question. I am down in the Big Smoke today and I thought I could go on a hunt for stuff. What would you recomend to read about Pamela Colman Smith.
Our big smoke is not like your big smokes, but I might be able to find something. I suppose to get an balanced? view I should get something about GD but I would rather read about her life etc. Have you any views? Thanks in Anticipation. ~Rosanne
If I was Pamela Colman Smith, I'd want to read
about the English Theatre, back around 1900...
and Ellen Terry.
from an article:
"The English theatre which Pamela Colman Smith knew intimately, under the guardianship of the greatest actress of her day, Ellen Terry, surely provided her with a wealth of background and experience when she set about to create her Tarot, and one place we see this most clearly is in her four strikingly inspirational Pages."
click on: Shakespeare's Faux Pages (http://www.ata-tarot.com/reflections/08-01-04/shakespeare.htm)
Thank you for this link Fulgour. I have taken the step of getting Reflections, but cannot see anywhere the cost involved. I will forward a PM to you re:ATA
I appreciated how like the roles the pages were and the influence on Pamela. It was a whole new dimension. Regarding the site have I added 2 + 2 and got 4; or is llinois just a red Herring? !! ~Regards Rosanne

so it should be light, probably the Ur Tarot. Or angel anime

I think the whole Matthew/Mark/Luke/John thing is just a blind. I think the four winged animals each represent the apotheosis of each of the four elements.
:) Those books are actually encyclopedias: the guy gets A-E, the eagle gets F-M, the cow gets N-S, and the lion gets T-Z.
No matter how smart you are (or think you are), you should never stop learning.

They are also the four fixed signs of the Zodiac.
Angel-air-Aquarius
Eagle-water-Scorpio
Lion-fire-Leo
Bull-earth-Taurus
They were all being naughty so the World Dancer gave them a story book to look at so they would be quiet and good while Pixie painted their picture.
Well it's the Wheel of Fortune right? Maybe they're reading the books of our lives, or our fortunes, going 'Oh look, time for Johnnie to win the Lottery! And look, Mary's going to get that job she wanted, and Tom is about to propose to Janet, ooh, she's not expecting that....'

Even if the symbolism, in part, points to the four gospel writers, it indicates four very different interpretations of reality, leaving the Reality yet to be fully explored and reconciled as to four different points of view. The four elements materialize out of a higher supra-physical Reality, call it what you will, so we are left to explore their Origin. Basically our minds are blinds. Let us pull up the blinds!

The top 2 figures don't look as though they are reading. They look like they are pretending to work but are off daydreaming instead. They aren't even looking at the pages.
I don't blame the eagle for not working. Look how close that sword the sphinx is holding comes to his face.
The guys at the top were assigned the Vedic records and they aren't all that interested. The guys at the bottom got Harry Potter. And the snake is trying to look over the bull's shoulder.

Sorry to interupt, but this quote made me laugh so much ... you are right, Lark; they are incredibly still.

Agreed :D
Maybe the top of the card is like sitting in the back of a classromm easier to stuff around cause no one can see what you're doing but the guys at the bottom know they are being watched so they have to work harder.

MM ~ It seems I remember Joseph Campbell talking about the picture of Black Elk at the World Navel, surrounded by the Lakota Spirits of the Four Directions, and calling them "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John". The card shows the four fixed signs of the zodiac (the eagle being the higher emanation of Scorpio) corresponding to the four elements, and roughly to the solstices and equinoxes. What Frank Hall said, about the supra-physical reality manifesting in four quarters of material existence would apply. You have your apostles and Archangels at the four quarters, I have my Elemental Rulers and Watchers...so the books are beyond cultural inflections like "grimoire" and "gospel". BB, Stella

For all of you the figure with human form features an Angel? For me he has always been a man, simple and current but risen at this time by those “wings” of the knowledge (cause otherwise we should also consider angels the other animals!), which not consents in this case for the common experience but for the concentration in the study, the effort in the use of the intellect, represented in the sword that sustains the sphinx, the only thing that differentiates us highly of the animals, although in some point for more evolved we were, even we continue being it, what points out the sphinx. Not in vain their sword leads to the eagle, the airrest animal if it fits. However there is something to stand out: one thing is to learn selfishly for oneself and another thing is to share the knowledge, to discuss him, etc. The two superior beings are those that share ideas for instance, in Aeclectic Forum, those of below they only read them! They don't take a risk of opinions!or don’t share nothing! But to share is a way to evolve! And about evolution ,and in my personal, humble opinion, in this card is described in synthesis the whole Darwin's Theory of the Evolution and the recent discoveries about that what seemingly would have caused the development of the human brain was the necessity of primitive man of to walk erected (can you see the splendid legs of the wolfy creature?). Undoubtedly we come from the spineless descriptos for the snake that can be compared also to a sperm, and the wheel with an ovum!!! Or even to an atom or cell!!! I am for sure that anyone who built the Tarot knew about what Darwin named the “Theory of the Evolution” and that migth include the Golden Dawn Society!.But for more evolved than we were we continue being imperfect and should learn, until we ascend at the superior level and we are already owners of the knowledge that describes The World, where the sphinx is transmuted (the color violet - in the cloth- is associated it in some doctrines with the “transmutation”) in the androgynous one whose genitals are hide (ok. Sorry but the sex makes us more similar to the animals, ooops!)) and not so the “tits” (just only for necesity?). The “terrestrial” part of the animals are not longer shown, only their heads (high minds?) and they no longer need to learn studying, they know through the direct experience (to the one that the being here gives weelcome with her open arms)...But all this is a lot and sure you being bored. Of course i don’t say all this in a querent's reading! Might be the last one...! })

Hey,this card may be related with the Theory of the Relativity too, or not? After all the wheel also resembles an energy vortex, hmmm...

MM ~ Excellent! I never would have spotted the lurkers on this card! lol. You are truly thinking outside the box. (I am starting to hear that expression on television: "Think outside the box"...if it becomes mainstream, will my little mental oasis become crowded? Will I have to go further afield to get some elbow room? ;) ) BB, Stella
