Hi.
I started my studies with tarot about 18 months ago now so I still consider myself a beginner. So far I`ve mainly concentrated on RWS style decks, my favorites being World Spirit and the Stone Tarot. In the last few months I seem to be leaning a lot more towards Thoth style decks ; Cosmic Tribe and Vision Quest are 2 which I`ve recently aquired, I also have the Gill.
I`ve found that the meanings seem to gel more with me that the RWS style meanings.
Anyway, it suddenly hit me last week ` why don`t you actually get a Thoth deck?`and I`ve been gradually getting more obsessed by the day.
So as soon as I`ve saved up the pennies and got myself a Thoth deck I should hopefully be joining the study group as I`d quite like to make it my main deck.

If you do (and it's definitely my favorite deck), make sure to get the regular sized US Games ones (in the lavendar box). It's been said here before, but it bears repeating. The colors are brighter than the large version, and I think it's currently the only version that come with three versions of the Magus card, all of which are lovely.
Personally, I find some of the more Thelemic associations to be a little silly (The Ace of Disks is especially silly), but if you can get past that, the cards are great.

crystalmynx, I love the Thoth deck. It's very beautiful and I think it communicates in a deep and meaningful way, on many levels (as all decks do, if they are compatible with their people!). Hope you will enjoy it, too.

is it not the US games version that is sort of greenish?
i got the AGMuller version and it is quite lovely. and i never missed the two extra cards, one still only use one magician.
i guess it is a matter of taste though. perhaps some like the green tint to it!

Hi, Jema! Both my first large Thoth deck (published by US Games) and a later one (by Weiser) have a decidedly pale green tint. My small version (US Games) is vivid and does not have the green tint. The images in both large decks are quite faint, but not in the small deck. These variations don't bother me, but I've wondered why the versions are so different.

Well I went out this morning to my local magic shop which has a wonderful supply of tarot cards and they had 3 versions:

A really large version published by AGM
A tiny version published by AGM
A standard sized version with the 3 magus cards published by US Games.

I got the version with the 3 magus cards and the colours are fine, no greenish tinge at all
Apparently the US games version was originally greenish but recent editions of it aren`t green.
Haven`t had chance to do any more than look through it yet but so far I`m impressed.

I have both the large and regular sized US Games Thoth decks. The trick is, if you look at the top flap of the regular size, you will see it says "Deck printed in Belgium". Also, the cellophane covering the deck has a sticker, "MADE IN BELGIUM AGMAGMULLER". So the small US Games deck is actually the Belgium printed deck (with the 3 Magus's).

The Thoth deck is about my 6th deck that I have seriously worked with. I thought I had settled on Haindl but like Crystalmynix, I figured, I should have the 'source' deck so I purchased the Thoth deck (both of them!). And I love it. I think I have finally found my goto deck.

I like returning to this deck and checking out new resources for it. The art deco style designs can seem very crystalline (Hanged Man) or soft and fluid (Star, Nine of Cups).
I checked out the Tarot Total package again with Suzanne Levitt's color workbook and free journal. The workbook has two card comparisons--a Thoth and Rider Waite Smith design on one page. I liked the design constrasts and colors in the Thoth more.
The mini-decks that come in the package have the clear colors that make the Thoth seem much fresher to me. If I'm at the computer, I like the bigger deck, but when at a tea/coffeeshop, the smaller decks ---playing card size and the pocket size---are good. I'm hoping to find a pocket-size Thoth Companion book at one point.
If you have the lavendar box Thoth, do you like the booklet?

This deck rocks.

(And look at the Star! Sure, the books say she's holding cups, but don't those look like spotlights she's shining down?)

The Thoth is my 16th deck total, it is the large green box by Us Games. I like the large cards, the other deck with this size of cards that i have is the Elemental Tarot, and it also devitates from traditional standards. I find the colors inconsistant in this large version but it does its job well none the less. I wouldn't mind a regular sized deck for smaller surfaces and compatced reading areas, a computer program would be nice too.

Rarely do i try to use the LWB with this deck, once i have found the card in question but the information from the three sources only gives a light description. The description in Tarot for Dummies or Power Tarots resources are by far more helpful, most of all i rely on my inuition which this decks seems to charge.

The deck is one that defies standard logic, for it is one that glows with unorthodoxy and unconventionalisim, and beams such related information to the reader. Every print it has gone through has brought a new era with it, and with that the world turns constant.

Hi!

New here but wanted to add my 2 cents.

I started my tarot studies 6 months ago and tested a couple of decks out before settling on the Thoth. Same thing, it just called to me and I could really relate to the images.
I have never read the book that came with them. I have mediated on each and combined that with information from a site that had interpretations I identified with.

At first I fought the Thoth urge because I had read it was more for advanced users. But I just love how they touch me.

Hugs,
Donna

Hi LittleWing,

I also studied exclusively with the Rider Waite and clone decks before I got interested in the Thoth.
I am studying the decks side by side now, the books by Hajo Banzhaf and Ziegler are good for the Thoth deck, very inspiring books and although the Rider Waite (I use the Universal Waite) and the Thoth are very different decks to look at they do compliment each other. Its not until you get deeper in the Thoth deck that its starts to get complicated, with the kabbalah and the astrological symbols in the cards - but I'm not that far a head yet lol
If you like the Thoth, go ahead and get it, I don't think you'd get confused - its a lovely deck to work with :)

Am I the only one who enjoys the two extra cards?
[THE WHITE AND THE BLACK], not the additional Magus...........

my deck only has the hexagram card as extra, and i take that one out. i like a tarotdeck to have 78 cards, i know, very traditional, but thats just me.

The smaller decks don't have the Unicursal Hexagram, which is a shame - not sure why they left it out or the blank card, just the 2 extra Magus.

Um... 2 questions... 1. I thought the green border symbolized the Fool? Crowley often said green was the colour of creativity (and, the Fool, with infinite potential, certaily shows that comparison.) So, I always thought the green tint was to remind us of our beginnings or the journey of the Fool itself. I can't imagine reading without them now... 2. What are the extra cards for?

Smiles!

I got the Thoth deck just recently. This is my third deck that I acquired, the previous two lost to the great void of when I seperated from my husband. I did a spread with this deck just to see what it's personality was like, and I was just amazed. It's sarcastic, witty, talkative. I just love it! It has the most personality out of any deck I've had, definitely.

I recently invested in a pocket Thoth, after three years, off-and-on, of struggling to use this deck beyond the purpose of study. I think, for me, it was a case of a need for more confidence and greater knowledge; it is a very intense deck, IMO. I used the Thoth deck for comparing symbolism w/ the RWS when I was first studying tarot, but I haven't clicked with it as a reading deck 'till now. I guess I just had to stop being intimidated by the intensity and complexity of the Thoth.
BTW, this pocket edition I have came with the Unicursal Hexagram and the "Ordo Templi Orientis" card. I have, as yet, to find a pocket version with the extra Magus cards. I did a little research before this current purchase, and as far as I could tell, the pocket Thoth has room for only one Magus.
Peace,
Tauni :)

i bought this deck 7 years ago and have never seen any that speaks so clearly to me or has such powerful and beautiful imagery- for me no other deck will do by comparison. I know this completly a personal thing, im not trying to influence I just wanted to express how expressive I find them! I have looked at many decks on this site, on others, in shops, in foreign countries but nothing compares to you! My friend has just two decks but he only keeps the Thoth for admiring he claims he would never do a reading with them as they are too powerful? hmmm so just adding my thoughts- interseting to find out about the extra Magnus's I didn't know about!
