I'm fairly sure the second one is either hematite or jet, but I have no idea what the first one is.

Thanks!

Might the first one be agate? I have some samples of agate that are banded and colored like that.

Actually having looked around online a bit, I think the first one isn't jet but hematite. And Apollonia, I think you're right, it does look like agate.

Yes, you're right. The picture wasn't great, so it didn't show it that well, but the stone actually has a silvery sheen to it and it feels quite heavy in my palm (for its size), which is why I thought it was hematite :)

Jet is light as a feather and black; hematite is a mirror-like silver and very heavy. My vote for the second one is hematite.:)
The first one is definitely agate, possible Botswana agate, which comes in lovely shades of grey, brown or pink.

Hi bodhran :)
It does look like agate! Thanks, now I know what stones I actually have.

I think, too, that the first one could be agate. I'm wondering if the second one might be black obsidian. :)

Hm, obsidian eh? I'll have a look at the properties of it and compare the specs with my stone.

If it's got that silvery sheen (I think of it as a shinier type of gunmetal) as described, it'd be hematite, not obsidian.

Hematite it is then! Thank you, everyone, you've all been most helpful :)

I am with bodhran, the first one IS a Botswana agate. I have a book with pictures and it looks exactly like the stones in the book, like that not quite beige, gray and weird shade of washed out mauvy brown. I love that one. It has a waxy feeling to it and it is so calming to me, even to look at.

Yes, it is agate! I didn't know what kind but that's the look of it! I love agate, it is so pretty in all forms. Very pretty Perilune!

I have a strand of large polished agate beads, very heavy and expensive but I found them in a thrift shop for $3. I wonder if the people pricing them thought they were plastic?!

Lovely, now I know what kind of agate it is! It is a beautiful stone, full of lovely ripples in it (which was why I was drawn to it in the first place). Thanks again everyone!
