View Full Version : Which kind of gemstone/crystal should be used for cleansing/charging Tarot decks?

Since there are many kinds of gemstones and magical rocks, I'm wondering which type of rocks should I use for cleansing and charging my Tarot decks.

As I found in many websites, amethyst, amazonite, quartz and rose quartz are usually suggested.
But none of them explain why such stone type is chosen.

So, I would be grateful if you could please let me know;

- which kind of gemstones/crystals you use for charging/cleansing your card

- whether you use a specific type of stone for a specific deck or
use the same kind of stone for all of your decks

- why you select this one instead of others
(e.g. your Zodiac sign, its unique physical/magical properties, etc.)

- how you use it (e.g. just place the stone near the tarot case,
put the stone inside the tarot bag/case, etc.)

- with which size/shape of the stone

Thank you very much in advance  :)

I like crystals very much, but I don't combine them with Tarot.

I prep a deck for a reading by shuffling briefly beforehand, and after the reading, I cleanse the deck by shuffling again. That's all they need.

I find crystals of many different kinds can very easily pick up a whole heap of bad energy - they need cleansing more than decks. To do that I like to leave them outside in the rain, and if I want a magnificent charge, I'll leave them outside in a thunderstorm.

But none of them explain why such stone [quartz] type is chosen.Quartz is to occult as salt is to food. It just goes with everything.

how you use it (e.g. just place the stone near the tarot case,
put the stone inside the tarot bag/case, etc.)Basic usage consists of exposing the crystal to your cards, and then exposing the rock to some natural element e.g. sunlight, moonlight, soil, running water, salt, salt water, grains, etc. Or vice versus depending on what are doing with what stone. What natural element used seems to be a personal choice.

The rock used depends on what you want to do and a simple crystal correspondence chart will suffice. You will have to pick the occult "school" for the chart, e.g. Wicca, Golden Dawn, Hoodoo, "new age", etc. Note that different charts will have different functions and a lot of cross overs too.

The chlorite looks like little green ferns inside the crystal. I think some of those crystals come from Brazil. It's really powerful, the best thing I've ever seen for doing that kind of work.

Not all my decks are in bags, but the ones that are have a small amethyst point and a small clear quartz point. Amethyst for protection and clear quartz to amplify the amethyst. I read about it years ago, probably on here!

Rockcrystal (clear quartz)

- whether you use a specific type of stone for a specific deck or
use the same kind of stone for all of your decks

I have one specific stone for my favorite and anotehr specific for my reading decks

- why you select this one instead of others
(e.g. your Zodiac sign, its unique physical/magical properties, etc.)

Its like the "mother" of other stones. its powerful, cleaning, charging

- how you use it (e.g. just place the stone near the tarot case,
put the stone inside the tarot bag/case, etc.)

I have the stone in teh tarot bag

- with which size/shape of the stone

different for different decks.
i think they are calles "laserpointers" (of rock crystal) in english, those are powerful to have when you do a reading

I use a rose quartz with my Fairies Oracle....I have yet to use my FO because when I look at the cards, I feel uneasy. It seems as if the rose quartz is softening them up for me. I'm not at the point of picking them up yet, but they are slowly growing on me.

I actually use an amethyst cluster and a clear quartz cluster for cleansing my decks. They both fit very nicely on top of the cards - and I sit them on my windowsill in the moonlight for that extra charge!

I do quite a bit of tarot magic with candles and gemstones...I've been very satisfied with my results!

I have four amethyst DT (double-terminated) wands which I keep in a dresser drawer that contains most all of my tarot decks. :)

On my reading table, I keep a number of different crystals, including a crystal ball and four clear quartz double-terminated wands which point directly at the deck I am using at the moment. Behind those wands are circles of crystals, including:

Apache Tears (a bunch in a pile on either end of my table)
Snowflake Obsidian (5 in a circle, with a quartz in the center)
Chalcedony (5 in a circle, with a quartz in the center)
Banded Amethyst (5 in a circle, with a quartz in the center)
Ocean Jasper (5 in a circle, with a quartz in the center)
Three Lapis Lazuli, one Chrysacolla and two magnesite tumblestones in a circle with a quartz in the center

I am drawn to certain crystals like I am drawn to certain tarot card decks. Most have properties such as repelling negative energy and emotions, increasing our psychic and our telepathic abilities, and healing powers. Apache Tears are used to stimulate sponteneity, analytical capabilities and precision and, like other stones I have, act as a protective amulet against negative energy.

I really love my crystals and my crystal ball. I don't use my crystal ball to literally look into the future by gazing into it, at least not at this point in my journey, but I do use it for its positive energy surrounding my readings and it seems to bond with me on a psychic level and connect me with my readings. It brings a good energy with it. Since I believe the cards are predictive, even though I may not always understand their message, the crystal ball does aid in good energy vibes surrounding that process.

I personally like to keep citrine with my cards (natural citrine, not the heat treated amethyst). I find citrine is a great cleanser that doesn't retain negative energy like some stones.

Woops, I forgot to answer the question about cleansing a tarot deck! :D I use the light of the full moon, not crystals, to cleanse a deck. Initially when I receive a deck, I cleanse the cards by putting them outside on the ground during a full moon. It may take more than one night during the full moon and I am very careful of the cards, since I live in an area of high humidity.

If I really feel a deck needs a second round of cleansing, I will arrange the cards in order and either again put them on the ground under a full moon, or I will put the cards in a window ledge that faces the full moon. I will shut the door to the room, and get the room as dark as possible so it can fill with as much moonlight as possible.

I also use the light of the full moon to cleanse crystals.

I don't use crystals to cleanse a tarot deck. I use them more to protect the deck, and to keep it in good working order. Some of the desirable properties of the crystals I chose I went over in my last post. If I could only pick two crystals, I would pick clear quartz and amethyst. But I really like all of the crystals in my collection and feel that all of them collectively together are a good balance. :) Properties I find desirable in crystals are protective powers, increase in psychic energy, and to repel negative energy.

Hi Missy!

Maybe you (and all the other wise crystal people too) can help me! :)

I've read Tarot for a long time, but have only very recently been very drawn to buying a crystal for my decks, decks? I really have no idea where to start!

Actually I have done very intense and personal oracle readings with my Wild Wisdom of the Faery Oracle and Dragonfae oracle and this has awakened in me a strong desire to start using crystals in my tarot work and my spellwork with the cards.

Where do I start? Would a clear quartz crystal be the best all-around? Do any of you use different crystals for different decks? How many clear crystals should I buy, do I need one for every deck I plan on using it with?

Thank you for any help! One little thing though, I am very low on money and am going to be for a very long time too sadly. If you could suggest maybe a place online where I could find the best ones at a cheaper price? :)

I would recommend clear quartz as a starting point! It is an 'amplifier', so it will amplify the energy of your deck, as well as keep them cleansed and ready for use.

I have a nice sized cluster that I put on top of a new tarot deck for a few days after I get it. Of course, I'll remove the deck and shuffle now and then, just to keep it infused with my energy.

A small piece would work just as well!

As I said, clear quartz is self cleansing, and will cleanse other objects, but I still do a bit of a cleansing ritual with every gemstone that I buy. I guess I'm a little obsessive compulsive that way!

I also have a large amethyst cluster that I use just prior to doing a reading (for someone else) with a specific deck. Amethyst sooths and calms me, and seems to do the same for my deck - I use it to remove residual energies from the last reading I did with it!

Really! I see that I have a PM, and from you ;) I wonder who's shop that could be?

Thank you! And to you too Morgane_49  I do believe I am going to buy a clear quartz to start off with, it sounds like the perfect choice! I too have a soft spot for amethyst and citrine (ok well a few others too lol), does citrine have any special properties concerning tarot?

Citrine is also a great cleansing stone and regenerator, so it would be a good one to keep in the bag with your deck between readings. (It never needs cleansing, either!)

It's a good grounding stone to hold in your hand prior to starting your reading, at at completion.

A special bonus about citrine (regarding tarot) is that it opens intuition!

Thanks so much! Now I know why I am always so drawn to citrine, I need grounding in so many ways, and very much so with my tarot and oracle cards. I have a strong tendency to flit about in the clouds, my imagination and fanasty ;)

Oh dear, I'd better clarify,,,sometimes I forget that there are newbies here...

Sometimes I am the only one who is in on my humor, but this was a bad place to do it, I don't want to confuse anyone or break any AT rules...

There is no such thing as Morticia's House of Quartz. I am lucky enough to be able to drive to Arkansas a few times a year and I go and dig my own crystals, and have a fairly abundant amount. So on occasion, I pass a few of them out to members. I'm sorry for the confusion.

That said,

I would be happy as a clam to send you a few points if you'd like them. The fee is that you must pay it forward, and help someone else out when you have a chance.

PM me with your address. :) And welcome to AT!

Missy - do you lay the cards out individually, or fan them out? Also, are they on a spread cloth, or directly on the ground? I'm concerned about dew getting on them and making them soggy. Or worse, it's wooded behind my house, and what if a small animal comes along in the middle of the night and snatches a card. I have thoughts of a fox running around the area with the 3 of Cups in his mouth!

Morgane_49

You can also place them in a windowsill or somewhere inside where you know the moon shines through.

I never put anything outside - the racoons and squirrels will take it away before I get back in the house!

makani
02-10-2009, 03:20
I'm in a quandry, the moon does shine into the house, but just for a while, it's so treed out there they block the moon shine. And I think no matter what part of the house I place the deck, it will only get the moon's rays for a little while. Is this acceptable?

Morgane_49
02-10-2009, 05:21
Yes, that will be fine.

I don't always worry about charging my decks in the moon light. Sometimes I just sleep with them under my pillow for a week or so - I've had some amazingly insightful dreams by doing this with a new deck. I'll spend days shuffling and charging them with my own energy prior to actually using them.

Don't make it hard on yourself! Do what you're most comfortable with.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'm taking some of this stuff too literally. You're right, I need to find what's comfortable for me, what works for me.

Morgane_49

Your energy is all the cards really need! It's easy to lose sight of that sometimes.

My best 'bonding' time with my cards is when I sit quietly, just shuffling or looking through them.

The rituals are more for us than they are for the cards, sometimes!
