...is on its way to my hot little hands thanks to the great folks at the Tarot Garden.
Does anyone have this deck (I am getting the 2nd edition)? Can anyone recommend either an additional appalachian looking deck or a old syle photographic deck?

I know there's another photographic deck similar to it that I've seen, but I can't remember the name of it. Tarot Garden might be able to narrow it down, they have search engines that can look for specifics. www.tarotgarden.com

I absolutely love the Mountain Dream. As far as I know, it was the first deck to use photographs of real people. I used it as my main deck for a while, but found the card stock to be a bit thin and so started worrying about damage. :(
Once I get a bit ahead financially I might just have to buy another copy so I can use one regularly... The cards are quite large so if I do get another I might have to trim off the white borders. })

I got them in earlier in the week. I do like them. The card stock is on the thinner side but the images themselves are great.
I like the vintage photo feel that they have (even though most of the pictures were actually taken in the early 70's)- it gives off that the deck is much older than that.

I just received the Mountain Dream (MD) deck a few days ago.
It looks better in person than in the scans.
For those of us who've secretly dreamed of staging and photographing our own tarot deck but don't have the inspiration or energy, the MD does it for us.
Many of the pictures in the MD are quite pedestrian in the face of the images in the corresponding cards in the Rider-Waite deck. Because of the limitations of the staging and photography, people who aren't familiar with the Rider-Waite deck would likely not appreciate this deck as much as those who are familiar with the Rider-Waite.
However, the pedestrian nature of the pictures is understandable in light of the fact that drawings can be more mystical and other-worldly than photography, especially the very-little-special-effects photography employed in the MD deck. I find that type of photography to be a pleasant change from the special-effects-overload photography that one generally sees today in tarot/oracle decks and in print generally.

Congratulations on your new deck VG.
The Mountain Dream has an atmosphere all of its own, it appeals to me a lot.
Maybe you would like the New York tarot too ? It is not old photographs, but it is in black and white which gives it sort of a timeless feel IMO.

The Mountain Dream is one of my favorite decks. I even love the box that it comes in.
It seems fragile to read with, but sometimes I enjoy just opening the box and looking at all the cards. Using photos to create a tarot deck is a very interesting idea...

great deck. got it from Tarot Garden at a Blitz Sale (eBay) but even the regular price is a steal for such a legendary self-published deck. the 1st edition is of course a collector's item i will never be able to afford, the deck i am talking about is the 2nd edition, of course. it is excellent, there are some interesting changes and a new cardback. if you like the 70's spirit, hippies, selfmade dresses and costumes, real ppl, go for it.
card stock IS thin but not a problem for gentle shufflers or you can get two copies directly.

But it seems to be pushed back by other titles. I really like the feel of the '70's with these cards. --Tao

I had always assumed that the Mountain Dream Tarot (1st Edition) had been independently distributed. To my surprise today, I was glancing at the LWB to a 1970s U.S. Games Rider-Waite deck [when U.S. Games was on 32nd Street, New York City] and noticed that the Mountain Dream deck was listed among the decks that U.S. Games distributes. As I've never noticed any mention of Mountain Dream in any other LWBs of early U.S. Games tarot decks, I'm presuming that the U.S. Games distributorship of the Mountain Dream was only for a short time period. But then, I don't have too many early printings of U.S. Games decks.

Wow, I've never seen this deck until today. It would be neat to go through old family photos and see if you can come up with enough cards to make a personal deck. You could scan it and add images as needed. My Grandfather use to take alot of pictures and develope them. I have so many old photos and old negatives. Even if I do a majors only, I think it would be fun. I might make it a summer project.

The Mountain Dream Tarot is closely modelled after the Rider-Waite images with carefully posed and costumed people, so it might be hard to find old, candid family photos along the lines of Mountain Dream. In contrast, there is the New York Tarot [long out of out-of-print] that has photos that are non-RW but communicate RW card meanings. The New York Tarot might be more like the personal tarot you could make from candid family photos.

Thanks for the link. I like those too. I can't wait to get moved and have all our stuff out of storage. I'm ready to get on with things.
