BOC album cover

LightTraveller

Greetings!

(This may properly belong in the Tarot Decks forum, so mods, feel free to move it.)

I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the cover art for Blue Oyster Cult's album, Agents of Fortune. I've searched Aeclectic, but have found no references, and the Google results have turned up nothing useful.

For those who don't know, the painting features a magician holding up four tarot cards in his left hand.

I can make out Death and The Sun (I think), but the others are not clear. I also have no idea which deck that is, or even whether it is an actual published deck or just made up for that painting.

Any ideas?

The Death cardlooks like the Thoth one. I think the other two are The Hanged Man and The Magician (not feom the Thoth deck though  )

Oh, I LOVED the Fire Cat as a kid! :D

Just pulled out my Thoth, and you're spot-on about that Death card. I'm pretty sure the Sun is also. Knowing what deck it is, the others shouldn't be hard to find out. Thanks!!!

ETA: Nothing else in Thoth seems to resemble either of the other two. Maybe there's a Thoth-derivative that these are from.

OK, much better image here:

Death and The Sun are clearly derived from Thoth, but also noticeably simplified. The others look like the Empress and Emperor -- simplified and modified somewhat, but the positions of the figures are basically the same.

I'm thinking it's likely the artist (Lynn Curlee) worked from a Thoth for that part of the painting, but didn't worry about faithfully representing the original tarot images in more than a basic sense. Kinda makes sense that a band like BOC would use a deck like Thoth on an album cover. ;)

Thanks for the help! :)
