Public Liability Insurance (UK)

Looking for some information on the above.

I've checked out quotes for 'fortune telling' with the usual (high street and online) insurance brokers, and they all seem ot be in the reigion of £100.00 plus.

I know when I was practicing as a Complimentary Therapist insurance through various registering bodies was far cheaper. Admittedly, you had to join first, and the joining fee added to the insurance suppliment was maybe around the same/slightly cheaper, but I got the benefits of being with an organisation (which, as a therapist, was invaluable)

Is it a similar situation with tarot? Can anyone offer any advice or guidance? Any (reputable) tarot organisations in the UK that offer anything similar, and if they do, what have been your experiences?

Only asking becasue a couple of fairs I'm looking at reading at INSIST on your own PLI.. Advice would be much appreciated. Cheers :)

I sent you a pm on the topic.

PLI Offerings (UK)

Hi There

I'm currently negotiating a block rate with two different insurance brokers, specifically for Tarot Reading in the UK. We've been heavily researching the various offerings for some time now for Tarot Professionals and came to the conclusion a block rate would be best, covering all activities and sales of goods, etc. The individual rates are expensive for the low risk, and also are often not quite what they seem, i.e. an "entertainment" description may be used, which might not cover you if a claim was ever raised.

I've spent many hours on the phone discussing this, with brokers and other professional readers, so if you'd like to DM me, I can advise you as best I can with the information I have received so far.

Hi,
I appreciate this is a couple of months old but I hope you don't mind if I ask for the same information please. Marcus, I have sent you a PM and hope that's ok? It feels a bit more reassuring to know what others have found as there seems to be little out there and what there is seems expensive! Thanks, Allicat x

I don't know about anyone else, but if you all could share the generalities inline, that would be rather useful for anyone coming to the forum later in life, or even for those of us who are going to be eventually practicing full time, but aren't yet.

I have sent mine by pm as they were posted somewhere else and I don't think it right to repost them here. Things seem to be very different in different parts of the world...

In the UK, you often need (as well as want) Personal Liability Insurance to work in e.g. a fair but there are also other things people may want or need depending on e.g. if you want to see clients at home (can invalidate house insurance if you aren't careful/don't get the right policy). Professional Indemnity Insurance covers you for e.g. if someone claims your reading damaged them - I used to have that as a coach and paid runoff premiums for a while after I stopped doing that work. The key thing is to figure out what you need cover for and then to make sure your insurance covers those specifics, sadly it usually requires much research on the phone and policies do change over time.

I don't know what happens elsewhere in the world.

In Australia, the cheapest you'll get for the "safest" of occupations (and no, I can't remember what they are) is around $750-800 per annum. I know we're cheap against the English pound, but it sounds to me that even with the conversion rate, you have a huge bargain there!

Tarot Professionals Insurance (UK)

Hello All

After almost 3 months of research, enquiries, discussions, agents, brokers and insurance companies, we are almost ready to finalise our PLI offer within Tarot Professionals. Having become a registered company ourselves, and with a rapidly growing number of students becoming professional, we were in a good position to negotiate a discount with our final broker of choice - one already known, but nonetheless one we returned to after months of research into other offers.

The story of "Tarot insurance" will be told in our next magazine, as it is an interesting saga in itself!!!

We will be announcing the finalised offer shortly - likely within the next few days.

Tarot Insurance in the UK

Hello All

Whilst investigating this issue over the last six months, we've talked with all the "known" insurers in the UK and made substantial enquiries elsewhere - with specialist ethical insurers, alternative insurers and green insurers, for example.

In short, there are actually few insurers who cover Public Liability Insurance for Tarot readers. We settled on one in particular, who is probably the most well-known one already, but it was worth the journey just to confirm this choice. The final premium, with a discount for an organisation representing a substantial number of members, was around £115 for 1m cover and £140 for 2m cover.

We had some interesting conversations about risk - and the general consensus that the few risks would be along the lines of accidentally burning down a publiic venue (which is why they don't usually allow candles and incense!) or your crystal ball rolling off the table and breaking somebody's foot! However, whatever the level of risk, psychic faires etc in this country are now routinely asking for 2million pounds cover, so it is a professional requirement.

On "professional liability" this is simply not required nor really possible for Tarot reading - as far as I know. No-one I talked to over the last few months thought it possible to provide cover for the service of divination.

We tried to arrange a block insurance for our own body and members, but this proved impractical - for one reason, insurers required a common date of renewal (to reduce their admin costs) and significant numbers to make this viable. So until I can be assured 100+ professional readers all able to confirm their renewals at the same date, and have £8,000 of my own money to put up front on that promise, the insurers can continue to rake it in from us all individually and at a premium. I am still aiming to make a block deal at some point, as it seems ludicrous that when I have spoken to a lot of the brokers, they already have 80+ individual readers already on their books!

May a full deck of possibilities be yours,

Marcus Katz
