Decks for learning?

Water Lady

I am not a collector and don't want to be...but I seem to have more then one deck so what is going on. I think it is a search for the 'One' deck that seems to speak to me more then others. I may have just found it with shadowscapes (I know lots of people don't like the pretty, fairy type cards)
But this one seems to have more depth with lots of symbols.
So the question is..(leaving the collection angle out of this discussion) .Do you buy decks to find the 'Right' one or do you just like to buy decks?

nisaba

<grin> I found the right deck in the early 1990s. I collect other decks for pleasure and for use.

Owning more than one deck is like owning more than one CD, or more than one book, or more than one tee-shirt. Can you imagine living with only one tee-shirt, one CD or one book? It would be really, really weird, and you'd get sick of it pretty quickly.

Hbere are some previous discussions on and around this topic that the "search" function pulled up on a quick glance. There's a link to the search engine on the bottom of every page - they are useful things! <smile>

SO this turns out to be the endless question? or perhaps the question with no answer or too many answers.

Briar Rose

yes Nan, it's an endless question. Every person is going to have a different answer. I feel that being on a forum, such as AT, you'll see lots of different decks with such deep discusions about the symbols, art, and order.
Then one deck after another will click with you, and you'll want it. And there is nothing wrong with that.

What I have found is that I started to use decks for seasons, and then for moods/questions. Sometimes I feel romantic and want a deck to reflect that, and sometimes I feel contemporary and business savy and want a deck to reflect that part of my being.

There's no way out you know.

I have a favorite deck but it has its weak areas. So when I buy a new deck, I primarily do it because I hope that the new deck will fill in where my favorite deck is lacking. I guess I mainly buy to find a balance (if that makes sense). My other reason is sort of for collecting purposes, so I won't mention it since you asked us to leave collecting angle out of it....

well that brings up another question, what do you mean by your deck is missing / lacking??? and you need balance.
You don't like the meaning of some cards??

no, that is not what I meant. i just meant buying another deck (bringing in another artist's perspective) can add to where certain cards in a deck are weak or lacking. it doesnt mean i don't like some of the meanings.
Example: 8 of wands in deck X. if the 8 of wands and the image/system whatever clearly depicts the 8 of wands as meaning a certain thing (or hell, maybe because of the images, its hard for me to see the cards as really being beyond certain meanings) and I want to go beyond that artist's definition for that card (or what I get from looking at it) then i'd purchase another deck. I hope that makes sense. if not, i hope someone more eloquent and who knows what i'm talking about will explain. im not the best at explaining things.

eta:
here is a real life example: I have Universal Tarot. with this deck, I saw the 8 of wands as meaning 3 things (*on its own). that was about it. The more decks I worked with, the more I was able to add to my meaning of the 8 of wands because each new artist's work added more meaning.

* obviously, when read in combination with surrounding cards, the definition changes

Le Fanu

Firstly, I am a whorish, brazen, Babylonian collector, so take what I say with a pinch of salt. Also I am not - nor ever have been - looking for The One. I am not monogomous and life is too short for me to start stipulating loyalty with tarot decks.

But there is always one card in a deck which I can't quite get, or don't quite like. Except with the Thoth. With the Thoth I love every card and I still don't consider the Thoth The One. Why? Coz sometimes even the non-collectors among us just feel like a change.

You'll be learning your whole life so I wouldn't seperate one deck just for that...

AJ

On the other hand, Any deck can be the one deck if the owner is willing to stick with it. In today's modern gotta have it all gotta have it right now, sticking with something is seldom done. One deck is plenty, plenty of decks is just fun. Obviously it doesn't make for a better reader. March to your own drummer

I buy decks because I love them; I love the variety, the fact that you get something new from every single one (even the vile ones....)

I am a Collector. :D })

That said - pace nisaba - I don't believe there is a The One. I find I need to read with different ones at different times, and though I do have favourites, some of the less favourite have pulled out the best readings at times.

AJ has a point though. You can read well with anything. I have read with decks no-one else would read with.... The Power Animals, even :bugeyed: Make a deck your one deck and it will deliver.
