View Full Version : Celebrities who are into tarot

The "If money were no object, what deck" thread got me thinking.

Are there any celebrities (other than tarot authors or tarot publishers) who are into tarot and/or collect tarot decks?

I know that the Hermit tarot image appears in the inside of the Led Zeppelin IV record jacket; however, I'm not sure whether Led Zeppellin members are into tarot.

P.S. I'm undecided whether that Hermit looks like the one from RWS or Morgan Greer.

Someone told me yesterday that Jimmy Paige of Led Zepplin owns a couple of the original Crowley-Harris paintings for the Thoth deck. It would make sense, given that he's so into the magickal arts.

Is Jimmy Paige the one who bought Alister Crowley's old home?

A not-approved bio on the former Princess Diana said she had consulted a tarot reader and it showed Rider Waite cards on the show.

(Sorry, but this is slightly related...even though you said aside from artists and authors of tarot stuff...I'm doing some research for a review on a German tarot and came up with an artist who married a noted zoologist and she also painted celebrity portraits. Cannot say I came across anyone else though. The link below is

Michelle Branch's new video "Are You Happy Now" looks like it has tarot cards in it. In the last part of the video, I think she holds up a Tower card and then she like pops into the scene...and there's like a tower in the backround. And throughtout the video she's throwing cards and I think they're tarot cards.

But I dont know if she's into tarot or not...so...

I believe Marilyn Manson has a majors deck, if not full out 78 card deck.

It wasn't released in a set, but the cards - choice majors that fit the theme of Holy Wood, his album before this new fabulous album - were individually released and there are T-shirts with the images on them.

But yes, the Right Reverend (Wrong Reverend? Hehe.) knows his way around a deck o' tarot cards.

The band Type O Negative references the tarot in their 1996 October Rust outing and their forthcoming effort Life is Killing Me. And let me tell you, if there's not a man made to be an archetype of powerful dynamic masculinity, it's their singer. Goodness gracious. . .

There are pictures of Tarot cards inside a Rush CD. I can't remember the name though. I know it is one of their more rececent ones. I can definitely see Neil Peart being interested in the Tarot.

I believe there is a thread that has come back from the dead, so to speak, in the tarot deck forum. From what I remember there is a link to an interview with him doing a "reading" with his majors only deck. He didn't even know what the High Priestess meant. :P

It seems by reading your posts of what you actually knows and what you think, that celebreties is just as tight in them showing the world what they do and don't do with tarot, as we members of aeclectic are.

What I have seen of tarot in music videos, films and series (remember the one with Zena?) - it could easily be a trend to sell copies as it could be someone interested in tarot.

Though I must say, the episode with Zena all based on tarot, they did their studies thoughoughly - so at least someone there doing the research would by now be heavily into tarot :D

From waaaaay back was the late Vincent (and sometimes wife Jeannie) Crane of Brit band "Atomic Rooster". The RWS deck features on the cover(?) of a collaborative project: "Taro Rota" with Arthur Brown (He of the flaming head-gear and "Fire! ... Da da daaaa" fame)

François Mitterand's doctor was called Jean-Pierre Tarot. Does this count? :D

I remember in the 1970s (gosh, how time flies!) there was a German group who brought out a record with 22 titles. Each one was the title of a Tarot card. But they're no longer celebrities...... So I suppose that doesn't count either?

Oh I'm sure Kenneth Anger (film maker in LA) was into tarot, what w/his involvement w/the Templars or one of those esoteric groups. I think he knew Crowley.

CLAMP (I guess they're celebrities in Japan - one of the most famous shoujo mangaka/girl's comic artist/writer group) seem to be really into tarot. They've released a full 78 set for that robot one.... chobits I think.

Why do we need celebrities?

If it is to give Tarot some better credibility we'd better rustle up some more because I haven't heard of any of the ones so far mentioned.

I don't mind CELEBRITIES if they can carry a flag for all of us and they have credibility and they get on Michael Parkinson and 4 Corners for the right reasons.

Now there was some talk in the Histerical forum some time ago about the Pope being seen with a book about tarot on his desk. I don't think that really meant anything but we sort of need someone of that stature I reckon.

I'm not pushing for the Pope butI reckon there are some good parallels between the CC (Catholic Church not Celtic Cross) and the Tarot.

They have the BVM and we have HP
They have the Devil and we have Him too
We both have angels and icons and rituals
They have the confessional and we have the Tower.

Do you think they would be interested in a merger? They took over Paganism a little bit over 2000 years ago. The idea is perhaps worth a feasibility study. Someone might like to do a reading on it : CC of course.

Who else could there be as possible celebrity patron?

Bill Gates Money is simply energy

Madonna: a modern day version of the Empress

Meryl Streep: Strength

I'm sure we could come up with some more contemporary ones or we could call for expressions of interest and see whether anyone outs themselves.

I think I'd prefer to go with Mrs and Mr. Everyperson. like we do here. They're our best bet I reckon :)

I certainly don't need celebrities doing tarot, I see this thread as interesting trivia that's all.
Must say though I found it very interesting that Jimmy Paige bought Crowley's house. I am a big fan of his music but I hardly know anything about him, but it is good to see how your different interests can come together.

Moongold, I agree with you in some ways. What would celeb's do for tarot anyway?

Wouldn't tarot not be as special if everyone did it? It might become a trend or some sort. Let's take britney Spears as an example. ((Now I know exactly what yall are thinking, 'she's a hoochie Sarah, don't use her. She's evil Sarah no!)). If she were to announce to the world that she liked tarot cards and studied them on here little 'break' and became very interested in them...what would happen?

Tarot would become a trend. Like, a fashion statement...and the credibility to greats who've known and studied tarot for a long time ((like some great elders here i.e. Diana, Umbrae, you Moongold, and so many many many other greats I can't even begin to name)), would suddenly have people wanting advice about it only because they're favorite pop star is into it.

I think some celebs who truely are interested in it and don't show it around and flaunt it so much are fine. But major pop stars ((Brit, NSYNC, any other famous person who doesn't write they're own lyrics or sing they're own songs basically)) into tarot would probably be a bad thing.

Warning: What I just said is not meant to be offensive to anyone here on the boards. I don't like Britney Spears because all she can do it shake her butt and get mega rich. She doesn't even write her own songs. For more on my opinons about certain pop stars...PM me.

Warning #2: No-one was meant to be left out of groupings...or shoved into groups they didn't belong. But, my firey side popped out on this topic ((Moongold knows all about it don't yuh hun? Luv Yuh Moongold!)).

It all depends on the status of the celebrity. Like punkangel said, if it was someone like Britney Spears, you'd get a lot of people interested in tarot not for tarot, but because their idol is into it.

One of the members of the Dutch royal family (a sister of the queen) is very much into spirituality (I don't know whether she's into tarot as well). She wrote books about communicating with nature and she has set up a centre for spiritual development. Because she is a well-respected woman, she has done a lot for the acceptance of spirituality. Even though people do still make jokes about her "talking to trees", the tendency for people is to think that if she's into it, it can't be all nonsense.

Following up on moongold's post, here's a link to a photo article about Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar, and the book _Meditations on the Tarot_ for those of you who haven't had a chance to see it.

Pope John Paul is a celebrity (in the broad sense of the word) but, despite the photo, it's likely he isn't into tarot.

Here's an article called _Four of a Kind: The Tarot of the Beatles_:

http://www.theosophical.org/theosophy/questmagazine/mayjune2000/fourkind/index.html

I'm not sure whether any of the Beatles were ever into tarot. In fact, according to the article:

"John Lennon sang, “I don’t believe in Tarot” (among other things) in his song “God” in 1970, shortly after the breakup of the Beatles."

By the way, here's another article called _We All Live in a Tarot Submarine_, exploring the "theory that YELLOW SUBMARINE is actually a lyrical, yet highly complex allegory for the Great Journey of Life, with symbolism drawn extensively from the Tarot".

Wolf spirit - I LOVED your thought.......Jimmy Paige as the paige of cups - too appropriate. I suppose if we are talking about celebrities - we should consider that the Beatles probably dabbled in it at some point in time....................
Not that I like the Beatles - I'm more a Stones girl myself.
And in reality - does it really matter if ANY celebrities are into Tarot. I would expect for many of them it is a faddish kind of thing - much like the Dali Lama and the Middle Eastern Religion which is currently in favor. If I would have to guess it would be the ones who seem more "grounded" as opposed to the more vapid celebrities that get all the attention.

And seeing as the Tarot is a personaly journey - and they dislike revealing their personal lives (Jessica Simpson nonwithstanding) we may never really know. But it is fun to speculate about!!!!!!

I haven't heard of any, personally, but I would think that most celebrities would be so paranoid of creating a backlash; thereby reducing record and film revenues, that the ones who do study tarot would keep quiet. Just my cynical opinion. ;-)

We don't. Especially when most celebrities I've heard admit to any interest in the occult tend to make excuses for their interest, such as, "I was going through a really tough time," or as in the case of Nancy Reagan, "My husband had just been shot!" Or someone else makes the excuse for them, as in the case of Princess Diana, after her death. (She would probably have never made such excuses herself.)

As a result of the excuses, celebrity interest doesn't lend credibility, but instead only seems to lend more weight to the idea that only crackpots and the mentally ill are into this stuff.

Brian Eno played synth for a couple Roxy Music albums before going solo and becoming "the father of ambient music." On one of these solo albums, "Before and After Science" there is an instrumental track called "Energy Fools the Magician." This title appears to be inspired by Tarot cards. Gosh, another reason to like the ever affable Jack Black--possible Tarot connection. He is a rather thoughtful guy and smart. I read an interview in Rolling Stone about him a couple of months back (for "School of Rock"--I think). Maybe someone in the know should e-mail his fan club (does he have one?) and ask. It wouldn't surprise me either way. He loves to poke fun at himself best of all.

A little while ago someone mentioned Madonna. I thought there was a big hoodoo over her being into Kabala--some group that has a Mystic Master or something. There is Tarot stuff all over the web and in publication regarding the possible links to the Kabala. Knowledge converges at some point every where--this web site is proof.

Oh yeah, and I forgot that years ago someone said that Carole King wrote her "Tapestry" album (that word shows my age) with the help of Tarot. Also, Crosby, Stills & Nash were said to have consulted the cards.

P.S., I know, I know who are those old farts?

I don't know if I can actually post this - some of the forum are minors ~ BUT ~ I have a friend who is a palm reader of some skill. One day we were joking about it (he can read your real palm or a photocopy) and I asked that if in palm reading you are reading lines and bumps and wrinkles - couldn't you then also read ("male appendages")? He laughed and said it might be possible but he'd have to do a lot of hands-on research to see if it could work .... :)

Junia

"~ BUT ~"

You didn't mean "butt" actually did you. And as to reading male appendages--I imagine Madonna could write the rules on that one and wouldn't in the least mind the hands-on part of the whole deal. Last I heard she was making her way through the phone book looking for participants of any kind.

This rock group may not necessarily have any tarot enthusiasts among them, but I thought it would be interesting to note that the group's lead singer mentioned that he wrote the song "Stargazer" about a 16 year old girl he met who was "into tarot cards and astrology".

I have not seen this thread before...

two things came to my mind reading this:
1) what is exactly "into tarot"?
I find a big difference between those that seek regular or accasional consultations, and between those that actually bother to study and collect and not just for the sake of "what will be"...

2) I just saw the new Mattel "MY SCENE" style guide. "My Scene" is a version of Barbie for a more grown up audience (but still girls...). There was a theme called "FORTUNE FUN" and a couple of blurbs saying "it's all in the cards", "a card a day" and so on. Just for reference, other themes were like: "Party Fun", "Dancing Fun","Sleepover Fun" ...
Must say I was (secretly) pleased...I love when tarot is not shown with a witchy dressing...;) even if it becomes some sort of.. "fun"...

In the '80s (which will date me, I'm afraid), a British band called City Boy released a concept album called The Day the Earth Caught Fire. It was the story of a guy whose ambition was to be a huge superstar, and one night when he is at a party, someone is reading tarot. His friends all encourage him to get a reading and he pulls the Hanged Man.

"Someone shouted 'SUICIDE!'
"And everybody laughed.
"The game had gone too far,
"And I drew the Hanged Man's card,
"Then they turned the lights back on
"And left me in the dark."

So he decides that the only way to really achieve his superstardom is to actually kill himself. But alas, just as the newspapers and televisions are screaming his name and mourning him, the world erupts in a nuclear holocaust, and no-one is left to see.

The album ends with the Talking Clock you used to be able to phone and hear:"At the first stroke, it will be three o' clock, precisely."

It's a good album, even if the songwriters clearly have a rather loose interpretation of that card.

Interesting reply. Sounds like something the band "Judas Priest" would be sued over after someone tried it. Was there a video to it--I watched a lot of MTV and don't think I caught it if it was there.

I remember, a long while ago, seeing a thread here that showed a picture from a Versace advertisement, where she was using tarot cards. But if I remember correctly, she had blonde hair in that. I may be wrong. Would be interesting to see what this one is. It is a long time ago and I don't remember who posted the thread, but I don't think anyone could identify the deck in question.

I wonder if there is an interest though as I saw some tarot in one of her videos and also, she used the RWS as a backdrop in her concert. There was a documentary on in England recently.

I saw clips from a Madonna concert some weeks ago where tarot cards where displayed on a jumbo screen behind her on the stage, Rider-Waite, i think. Since there is a connection between kabbalah and tarot, it's possible she's in to tarot, too.
Regarding Alanis Morissette, I saw her appartment in Cribs on mtv (great place!) and in her room she had the Goddess Guidance Oracle, (i think) so why not tarot also?

There was also a tarot deck used as background on the soundtrack to the movie "Frieda".

Anybody know or find out which episode of "Friends" this might be? My daughter is hopelessly addicted to Friends and has 5 or 6 seasons on DVD. I don't have it on DVD, I have it on VCR tape. It is in the opener scene before "The One with the Hypnosis Tape." This episode is in Season Three, on tape "Episodes 14-19."

Phoebe is clearly shuffling & playing with oracle or tarot cards at the small round table next to the coffee counter, behind Chandler; but you can only see the backs of the cards. I'm not suprised at all, actually. A lot of celebs probably either have things in their contracts or have agreements with their PR reps not to talk about things of this nature. Unless they are like Madonna and certain other celebs who pretty much thrive on doing what is "taboo", they will probably want to keep things like that private so that they can make their money based on what they do (singing, acting, etc) rather than stirring hatred, fear, dislike, and accusations of being "devil worshippers" in large groups of people who take these things way too seriously.

That said, I wouldn't be suprised if a lot more people do these sorts of things than we know...CEOs to big companies, people that work for the government, and, of course, our beloved singers and actors....we just don't know about it. :D

I dunno, mysticism seems pretty prevalent in the metal/rock genre. Even today- Seether has a song with the lyrics "Can you throw another stone to ease my pain? Can you throw another stone to seal my fate?"

I grew up listening to Heart, Stevie Nicks, Meatloaf, Ozzy, Dio, etc- I wouldn't be surprised if they all had some exposure to tarot. It seems interchangeable to me mysticism/Occult/Tarot heavy metal ;)

Well, first off...I know this is an older thread. However, today I was reading "Ghost Rider" (Neil Peart's book about his personal tragedies and how he dealt with them) and came across a passage where he encounters "Tarot" and gives it a whirl. In any event, I decided to "search" his name on this forum and came across this thread.

Basically, Neil said that his "outlook" on life was highly-empirical; scientific, really..and he alluded to the fact that such things as fortune-telling and "tarot" were outside the realm of belief for him.

So about 2 years after his personal tragedies...while in CA, he decided to try out a Tarot reader. Now, the setting was apparently a boardwalk more or less saturated with Tarot readers and he specifically did NOT want to pick one who wore typical "gypsy" (his words) garb. Neil settled on this Vietnam-vet (a fact that later came out as this guy wasn't wearing fatigues or camo, apparently)...who completely astonished him.

I was very excited to come across this passage because I've followed this band (Rush) on and off for years. I always thought their later stuff (post-80s) was more or less "spiritual" in nature, but it turns out Neil was hardcore into "what you see...is all that is there" and he has been the main lyric-writer for the band since joining.

I suppose, much like how some people need a brick-wall to slam into before realizing there's more going on than what we see in our everyday lives, the deaths of his daughter and wife (within a year of each other) brought him to a different level of inner wisdom or maybe I should say...searching for that wisdom.

He was a thinker before, but now his topic was "himself." I suppose since he was shattered, he was wondering how to pull himself together....or could he pull himself together?

Luckily, he took a chance on a Tarot reader...and in some sort of wild irony, he picked a Vietnam-vet (someone much like Neil since they'd both been through their own "personal hells?")

Anyway....I'll paraphrase here: The reader asked Neil to pick 5 cards from a stack (several stacks on table). Neil picked DEATH, WISDOM (he listed it this way; I'm assuming it's THE HERMIT), THE TOWER, WHEEL OF FORTUNE and HIGH PRIESTESS. The Reader did not ask Neil any questions; apparently the Reader was really good!

The Reader told Neil something to the effect that after so much tragedy in his life, he was trying to put his life back together...and, he was dwelling on the past. Now..this book ("Ghost Rider") is about Neil's travels AFTER the tragedies..where he took a few long motorcycle rides (totalling 55,000 miles) to find "meaning" in his life. The Reader added that Neil was traveling with regrets...and basically pegged him as a musician or "performer." According to Neil, his "jaw dropped" and it's "still dropping."

Neil later says of the reading, "It rocked my world." And further, "It was so far beyond the possibility of guesswork or generality, and subsequent events and future readings only reinforced that experience, gave me the 'empirical evidence' of repeatability."

Neil also later added that he walked around for days trying to find ways to incorporate "this" into his philosophy of life. "This" being...Tarot or the idea that someone USING Tarot could see so much into his life...and without a word being said by Neil prior to the reading.

So anyway...a few passages later....Neil admits to doing simple readings for himself and mentions a 3-card spread he did where he drew THE FOOL, SIX OF CUPS (reversed) and NINE OF WANDS (reversed). He interpreted this reading to mean that he was on a carefree adventure (to find himself?), but he wasn't ready (at that time), yet, to make any commitments to a direction. He was also holding onto the past and he should let go of it. The last card's (9 Of Wands) interpretation came straight out of a book: regroup, rest, recuperate before taking the next step.

So, honestly...those of us who have a interest in or read Tarot...we believe there are deeper things going on than what meets the eye. I think Neil found this out as well..he HAD to believe because in his words the reading was "...so true in every respect." It's no wonder he picked up a deck somewhere and began reading for himself. (Did you notice in the earlier quote he said, "subsequent events and future readings only reinforced that experience...?")

Sometimes it takes a tragedy to derail us....and get us onto different (and better for us) tracks.

thanks for reading all of this!

Kerouac mentions a woman reading Tarot in On The Road - Dean Moriarty's card always, always coming up. Which leads to Neal Cassady (the real-life Dean Moriarty), the Pranksters, and the Dead - people throwing the I-Ching, very oracle conscious.

The Dead were all about synchronicity.

This is from IMDB:

Actress Calista Flockhart has become a tarot card reader - but not all her friends are pleased by the news she's telling. The Ally McBeal star took several days to learn how to read cards for her part as a fortune-teller who cares for her dying lesbian companion in the Showtime movie Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her. By the time the cameras started rolling, Flockhart was actually telling fortunes for some of her fellow cast members, including Cameron Diaz, Holly Hunter and Glenn Close. Director Rodrigo Garcia says, "She really got into reading the cards, but not everyone wants to hear about the future. After all, it's not always good news."

I also read on the net that it is rumored that Courtney Love visits tarot readers and psychics.

One or more of the members of Tool is/are into tarot and the occult, to whatever extent. Enough so that my niece's boyfriend, who really likes Tool (and kind of turned me onto them (I run, on the average, several years behind the times of popular music, but eventually and luckily catch up ocassionally) ), anyway, of course he then got interested in Crowley and the Thoth and all that, so last xmas I enabled him right into his first tarot deck- a larger-sized copy of the Thoth all for himself.
Inside the 10,000 Days cd, there are (tiny) stereoptic photos of the Thoth deck sitting in a stack on a desk.

The band Type O Negative references the tarot in their 1996 October Rust outing and their forthcoming effort Life is Killing Me. And let me tell you, if there's not a man made to be an archetype of powerful dynamic masculinity, it's their singer. Goodness gracious. . .

When I checked out Kerli's official website last week I thought that the images which contain the links looked like cards but I thought I was just reading too much into it.

http://www.kerlimusic.com/

But after getting her album in the mail today and checking out the liner notes, I found a section which depicts tarot cards. The cards are labeled and include pictures of herself and her family. I see the star, wheel of fortune, strength, the hermit, the moon, the world (the upper portion of the card is upside down but the bottom portion has been cut off and it is upright), the empress, and the bottom piece of the chariot (no pic). On another section I found one more card which is labeled with the title of her album, "love is dead"

I looked through her myspace but I didn't see any of the tarot card images there.
