What are your favorite scents for chilling out and calming? Mine is definitely lavender. Although the combined scents in some teas, like chamomile and lemon balm, just the scent rising from the cup can feel peaceful!

What are your favorites for when you want to feel especially happy, energized or alluring?
For a single scent, patchouli, but has to be the right patchouli brand for me. To get energized, a peppermint or spearmint smell (or coffee!). I'll think of more I'm sure.

ATers? So what scents chill and thrill you?

I like lavender too - but especially love the scent of lemon. Not industrial cleaning lemon, but real lemon. So refreshing.

HATE chemical impersonations of scents. Often gives me a headache. BUT REAL LEMON! YUM! I cut it up and put in the garbage disposal. Makes the whole kitchen smell great.

I came across an article the other day that said the following inhalation oils stimulate the pituitary to increase the production of HGH (human growth hormone).

Sandalwood, frankincense, myrrh, peppermint.

I have no idea what the scientific rational for this is, the article did not go into that. It sounded interesting though, and what the heck, I have no problem with sniffing a little peppermint! lol

The other three scents, sandalwood, frankincense, and myrrh, I cannot place just thinking about the names. I will have to try the testers the next time I go into the health food store.
They sound very biblical though, perhaps they are mixed into that scent that gets waved around in the church, and the keepers of religious lore have actually been on to this secret all this time!

Sandalwood I can place, but Myrrh? When is the last time anyone has smelled myrrh? Maybe lots of people use it, but I don't remember smelling it.

But hey, aromatherapy by any other name, has health benefits right? Can't hurt to please the senses and maybe help the physical body as well!

Olfactory senses are so crazy! Remember - we smell with a smeller that is the size of a postage stamp and your dog's is the size of a handkerchief!

Years and years ago there was a great Brit special called 'How Much Do You Smell?' and it was on smell, scent, and sense of smell ... it was fun and informative~!

Personally, I DETEST the smell of lavendar! :bugeyed: Hate it! I am not allergic to it; just can't stand the smell, real or chemical.

I sleep with a CPAP (Continous Positive Air Pressure) machine, so I breathe air that is warmed by water all night. It is highly NOT recommended to add anything to the water! Too Bad! If someone could bottle the smell of clean clothes blown dry on a line in fresh air ... I would love to breathe that all night.

I enjoy many many scents. Burning wood, the ocean, air dried clothes. A favourite scent of mine is Aloeswood but it is one of ever changing list of top 50 smells.

The crowned one mentioned the ocean, and there is nothing that smells better than that - but as for "perfume" type scents, I only wear one - Egyptian Musk Oil. Clean, fresh, very distinctive - but as of yet, I am the only white girl I know that wears it.

The best scents are the "real" ones! Clean clothes, the ocean, burning wood, sigh.....I WILL smell burning wood soon enough. In the area I'm in nearly everyone has and uses their fireplace. GREAT smells of all different woods burning, I especially love mesquite.

Bergamot is an absolute favourite to enliven and enthuse. Geranium too.

Patchouli is a lovely warming, comforting, all time favourite but it has to be 'right'. Some essential oil of Patchouli I have purchased has been quite yucky. Goodness only knows what it smelled like - I dread to think.

Lemonbalm and Rose are also amongst my favourites but I rarely if ever wear any kind of perfume. It's nice to be able to choose to smell something if you want to and like it but being in a car or on a plane with someone doused in Christian Dior's Poison or some other similar, very heavy perfume is pure torture. (Why, oh why do they put all those perfumes out to test in the Duty Free just before you board a plane???)

Some of the people who attend the Hopsice are highly sensitive to odour and so less is more where they are concerned and even air fresheners in the car or strongly perfumed washing powder is avoided for their comfort.

When one is in a closed space, it is important to remember that others may not only not like a fragrance, but be allergic to it. For about five years, I got migraines and scent was one of my triggers. It wasn't that I didn't just not LIKE a scent, I would get really ill. At the university, often we were in close quarters with coworkers and if one person decided MORE was better, the rest of us paid for it. I even had to go to higher ups because I would literally have to leave work and one can only do this so often.

Generally, I find the more natural scent, the less likely it is to cause me to get a headache unless it's really piled on.

I must check out bergamot and geranium, thanks for those, Milfoil! I do enjoy scent, just in moderation and as natural as possible.

Burning turf:thumbsup:

Sandalwood; fig; paper; sea air; black pepper; peppermint; pink grapefruit; cedarwood; rose; lime; verbena...

I use natural Savon de Marseille and love the smell of the soap on my skin even though it smells pretty grim.

I also use Chanel 19 it's my favourite perfume and I love it though I'm looking to find another signature scent. I've used Chanel for many years now. Ideally I'd like to have my own made up:D

A friend gave me a gift of having my own perfume made from an actual perfumerie! It was great! I got to name it and everything. But didn't really become my signature scent. That was Paloma Picasso for many years. Now I don't wear scent most days and with some peeps having a problem with, I will just add a bit if I'm not going to be in really enclosed spaces.

Would love to find a great sandalwood oil and incense.

My favorite scent is "One Man Show" {would you have expected anything less?} by Jacques Bogart. I was introduced to it accidentally and it became my signature scent many years ago. Women (I'm a gay man) would come up to me and tell me how great I smelled! Unfortunatley, Bogart stopped making it about 15 years ago, and the only place I can find it is on eBay or online. Yes, I know a bottled scent will dissapate or undergo a chemical change over time, but as long as I can get a bottle of it ~ I'll keep buying it! :)

I loved Caswell-Massey's Lemon Verbena aftershave (supposedly used by George Washington) but it really did BURN my skin!

I have sampled a few and the one I liked was Black Pearl as after it "settles" I thought it still smelled nice. Some were a bit strong and/or strange, but then in all fairness, only tried a handful. Like you said tho, the descriptions are SO fun!

At the Ren Fest we came across the booth of a woman who makes incense and oils. We bought a few diff ones and I feel like they are the best I've ever had. Then once I ran out, I ordered LOTS more off her website and they arrived very quickly and came with a free gift :)

I have East Indian Patchouli, Fankincense and Myrrh, and also Egyptian Musk oils(and I'm a white girl too :) ) which, to me are outstanding. The stick incense are a little bit longer than the "HEM" brand I normally get and seem to be better- at least to me.

For some reason I can't get on the website today to check to see if they have Sandalwood, but I'll bet they do. it's www.woodwillow.com and they are called wood, willow, and whatnots.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. Obviously everyone has a diff idea of what a great scent is, so I'd just try one or two and see what you think- then you can order tons like I did :)

Checking it out! Some scents work really well for me and some give me a headache. When I find ones that work, I tend to stick (no incense pun intended) with them.

Oh I know what you mean. I get migraines when I walk by the Perfume counter at Macy's or when a woman at work wears an overpowering scent. Sometimes I have to walk waay behind people if they are wearing something very very strong. The only actual perfume I can wear that doesn't give me a headache is Jessica McClintock. But no men's colognes ever give me migraines??? Anyway, these I mentioned before don't give me headaches, either.

I like the blueberry, vanilla, well actually I have a big variety and I don't think I've come across one I don't like. The scents linger way after you've burned them and the oils don't seem to have lost their fragrance at all. The husband and daughter love them, too- so, it's not just me :)

I don't get migraines but strong scents make me nauseous. I had a flatmate who drank perculated coffee every morning and my stomach would heave. I'm especially sensitive to scents in the morning for a strange reason:D

It was worse when I was pregnant (many moons ago), I remember driving down to Torquay when I was 7 months pregnant with my second son. Hubby's mum was very kindly paying for us to take a holiday with her (we had no money spare) since she had recently lost her husband and needed a break. On the way down we had to stop several times for loo breaks but also because her perfume made me feel so sick. I asked hubby to talk to her about it before the trip back, since it is a 6 hour drive, but she decided that perfume was required and I ended up being sick all the way home. Not so very nice and I do have to wonder why people feel the absolute need to use perfume all the time?

A nice mix of essentials is Orange, Geranium and Patchouli.

Careful with the Orange oil, it is a very strong degreasant and can almost strip paint!

I think it's the same reason people have to wear lipstick all the time; a habit that makes them feel dressed maybe.:)

To have to endure that for six hours pregnant? Kind of takes the fun out of a trip when you're sick a lot of the time, esp there and back.

Orange, geranium and patchouli sound like a nice combo. I know what you mean re essential orange oil. It can pack a punch.

I found some information on natural scents:

In aromatherapy, these are the ten most popular natural scents in alphabetical order for relaxation and sleep. Nature offers its best for natural cures without any side effects.

1. Bergamot - used in perfumes, and tea, popularly known as Earl Grey and Lady Grey - helps digestion, inflammation as well as treats depression.

2. Chamomile - used in tea and medicinal herbal treatment - has antispasmodic and antiinflammatory effect. Chamomile, used for inhalation or as tea, produces a calming agent for relaxation.

3. Jasmine - used in as fragrance as well as antidepressant - induces warm, calming emotions and sensuality.

4. Lavender - used in soaps, shampoos, lotions, potpourris, tinctures and teas - has multiple functions. It can be used as an antiseptic. It also relieves anxiety, rids of insomnia and eases depression. Lavender oil in massage helps one to sleep better, to stabilize moods, and to have better focus.

5. Lilac - used in perfumes and as a tonic - brings serenity, pleasurable memories and peaceful slumber.

6. Mandarin - outer peel extraction used in oils and fragrances - has a balancing, uplifting and calming effect.

7. Rose - used in oils and fragrances - calms nervous tensions and gives one a positive feeling about oneself.

8. Sandalwood - used in fragrances and wooden products - pacifies anxiety and anger while promotes relaxation, sleep and meditative states. In fact, sandalwood’s fragrance is closest to human pheromone. It is traditionally considered as an aphrodisiac.

9. Vanilla - used in food and oils - increases the levels of adrenaline, stimulating and invigorating one as well as producing a calming, relaxing and comforting effect.

10. Ylang-ylang - used in fragrances - has both stimulating and calming effect. It is known for its ability to slow down the sympathetic nervous system and stimulates mental alertness.
