View Full Version : EEK Cockroaches!!!

It must be spring as I am unable to contain the bubbling up of my need to create. I have long felt the cockroach has gotten a bad rap - this enduring insect (over 300 million years old! ) has even been used medicinally. In my path to find the divine in all things, my Spirit Guide has directed me to find the beauty in this lowly life form. I am excited to share this journey with everyone and hope you find the cards as well as the cockroach trivia enlightening.

I am looking for constructive feedback as well as thumbs up.

Here is my Ace of Cups.

Are you making an insect Tarot, or just roaches?:)

Myself, I hate them, but I have to admit they have gotten a bad rep. Most of the world eats insects; they are healthy and full of proteins and vitamins, but only the West doesn't.

Anyway, it looks like an interesting take, are you going to do a full deck?

Why? The scarab is one of Ancient Egypt's holiest symbols. The roach has been used in symbolism many times (I can't think of anything specific right now, but I'm sure there is something).

o..m..g... I almost lost my good cup of single estate Assam tea..lol (I hope that's the reaction I'm supposed to have.) I think it was the wings that did it.

I think that if you did do a whole deck that it would actually be a way of getting over the queazy feeling most people have about these things. Hmm other insects.. I like that idea as well.

This attracted me because i recently read something (spiritual article) that even cockroaches have something to teach. Then it said something about how they could survive allot of things ugh i can't explain it very well from my memory right now :P i'm going to do some attempts in finding it back. >.>

:D excited to see this cockroach tarot, hell yesh please!!! <3 And so cute too lol.

I think this is very promising. They do say that either the cockroach or the ant will in the end take over this planet, so why not give them their own decks ? :)

ETA concrit ? WELL - can you delineate the wing corners a little more clearly as they look slightly broken... Especially the one on the right. Did you do your own photpgraphy ? Have you enough individuals available to you not to have to use the same one too often ?

The cockroaches I have seen were bigger.
I think you should adjust the size.

Bleh, I'm trying to think of this as steriley as I can, otherwise I have to face the fact that it is a roach, and then I may stop liking it, and then you go off talking about "individuals" and "enough of them..."

As an aside though, the water lillies could be integrated a bit more into the picture, I think, but maybe it's just me. Maybe a filter of some sort, making it a fraction less sharp.

Hmmm, cockroaches, eh?

I hope that there will be a strong "ick factor" in these cards...like, don't make them too sterile looking, or too pretty...but at the same time, I hope they will be dressed up in some kind of finery...are you going with any particular era for these bugs (theme-wise)? I am not sure if that is possible though; absolutely creepy looking cockroaches (in up close detail, if you can manage that) wearing lovely dresses and maybe even some fancy wigs? It would be even cooler if you could put nasty little parasites crawling through the fancy wigs!

Yuck, I am giving myself the heebiegeebies. :bugeyed:

How exciting to get responses already - I have quite the head-cold so responding with the quotes function here is way beyond my skill set today - let me just say I am grateful for the suggestions -

The wings may or may not be on the final card - the deck being in a larvae stage as it were (tee hee)...as well as the size issue -

Closrapexa so far only roaches...as Yora mentioned everything has something to teach ..

btw- do not look up cockroach larvae images - went to check spelling and need a few more rounds with my Spirit Guide before I am able to find the holiness within - as I said this is a work in progress

Cockroaches are so eternal it is hard to pin down one era... although the stenching armpit that was Europe in the early middle ages is tempting. Imagine how many cockroaches could live in a wig like this ...

Excellent!

Suggestion:
To do this really well, you must think more like a roach:
For the ace of cups, consider a dirty glass instead of a golden chalice.

The Death card = A box of Borax.

Debra

Yes! Think more like a roach. More authentic, plus will speed spiritual advancement to see the world through their eyes. Or whatever sense organs are most appropriate.

Do you have a title?

La Cucaracha Divinatore?

Debra
28-02-2012, 08:52
Or maybe that's too French.
How about "Cockroaches Divine"? Kind of going along with the "Animals Divine" deck, but more irony.

As for clothing. Normally I don't like clothed realistic-looking animals. Maybe if I could get my cats to sit still for costume changes I'd feel better about it. But for me, clothing on realistic animals seems creepy. On the other hand, for this project it might be an improvement, although this would violate the "think like a cockroach" approach that OnePotato advocates.

Lots of decisions!

Feel better soon  ((((((((Nicky!)))))))))

PS- fun cockroach tidbit:
Female cockroaches are sometimes seen carrying egg cases on the end of their abdomen; the egg case of the German cockroach holds about 30 to 40 long, thin eggs, packed like frankfurters in the case called an ootheca.

And for the record, I love this idea. Like, a LOT. I <3 bugs.

And ... uh... this might be a little weird, but if you want to do analog in stead of digitally manipulated images- I collect insects, and I have a beautiful preserved roach you're welcome to put little overcoats and spats on, or pose with a monopoly dog (fool?) he's sterile and collected from a natural insect preserve- bred for scientific observation and not harvested illegally. I haven't mounted him yet, so he's still sealed in his little package and everything. :)

I LOVE OnePotato's idea of filthy cups!!!!!!

If you're going to stick with clothing and wigs for the cockroaches, I was thinking having their own dirty little parasites would be fun, like little fleas/lice crawling around in their wigs (not cockroaches though)....and if there is some way to incorporate a bed into some cards, well, surely they'd be full of bedbugs, right?

Okay, getting all creepy crawly again...must stop thinking about these details.

28-02-2012, 12:04
Ok, first of all, I love the idea. Yes, I agree that even they have something to teach. the pictures look fine, the only thing i would suggest, would be to darken the Roaches some, as they look bright and clean. I also agree that you should try to look through the eyes of a roach. Dirty things would give an ew factor, but would show them in their natural habitat as well. They are scavengers and that is why they have lasted this long. Not only that but they have a resistance like no other. All in all, I'll be watching the progress of this WIP. Good Luck!

Also, I don't think them wearing clothes would be for this deck, as you see one run across the floor wearing sneakers and a hat do you? If your answer is yes to that then I want a picture, lol. Now about the name? Roach Deck. Simple as that....

Excellent three !

But about the filth. Do we actually KNOW that they prefer filth ?

Are we being DISCRIMINATORY here ? Cos I once lived in an apartment block that was OVERRUN with cockroaches - it was even fumigated regularly, and we all kept things sparkling clean, in the hope that...

They seemed pleased. I swear they liked it.
I think someone needs to get out there and do a poll of cockroaches. I assume they will form part of your customer base, and you need to keep them happy :D

I don't think cockroaches give a rat's behind if it's clean or not. I worked in a few bars that had some serious roach problems - and the roaches were there because of the food source and lax cleaning habits of the bar owners....they had food and could breed without being disturbed. You would even see the roaches in the daytime, with people around. It was so bad that I didn't even wear the clothes and shoes that I worked in into my house. Really nasty. But I think it also depends on where you live - in warmer climates, roaches are more likely to be found even in clean places.

Not sure how I feel about a Roach Tarot. I guess I'd have to see the deck as a whole before I could say whether or not I would want to own it. Aesthetically, a praying mantis tarot, or even a deck starring my arch enemy "the spider" would be more my taste....

That being said, I just read something funny online the other day about survivors of a nuclear holocaust - out of the rubble would emerge cockroaches, pigeons, and Keith Richards...(hey man...where is everybody???)

Nicky that three is SO adorable. I really love where this is going.

Bhavana- on an interesting side note about the resistance to radiation- the Mythbusters did a study and found that flour beetles have a MUCH higher resistance than cockroaches- it was a great episode. Irradiating bugs.

I also agree that a tarot featuring other insects would be more apprealing- but there's something endearing about roaches for me. I love all urban wildlife frankly- pigeons, rats, opossums, foxes, crows, raccoons, seagulls, roaches, etc. I have enormous respect for a species that can *improve* their wellbeing around humans, rather than having their habitat destroyed and simply throwing in the towel. It's even better when theyare so numerous they become a problem. It kind of serves us right, as a species.

Have been in similar situation and have been told they like it clean! Seriously.

OK so little known fact of me. I am a bug lover. I used to own and breed over 100 species of tarantulas and 50 species of scorpions. I have authored articles on the subject for the American Tarantula Society of which I was once Secretary and Editor. Also for the British Tarantula Society. In that time I used to often "raise" my own food for them including cockroaches.
Roaches are highly photo sensitive and therefore do not like light. So they tend to be in places we think of as "dirty" because we do not clean those places often such as under the sink or fridge. They also need pretty high humidity which can be found in the same areas. They therefore pick up a large amount of bacteria that they transfer to various areas. They also carry disease. They are very strong (ever try to squish one with a shoe? good luck!).
However when they are "kept" they do not do well in dirty conditions. Food has to be cleaned up quickly and such. The only smell I ever got was if I left food in too long and it rotted. They love fresh veggies and fruits and CANDY! They really like sweet stuff. When the habitat would get too dirty they would start to die. So no they do not do remarkably well in "dirty" conditions. They also groom themselves often like little cats.
They are very social and many people that have had the large ones as pets will tell you that over time they will get used to you and you can handle them.
In other countries some women actually stud the large ones with jewels and paint and wear them as jewelry, pinned to them on a little leash. Louie Roachtton.. HAHA.
Maybe I can dig up some pictures of my roaches. There are so many different kinds you could incorporate. A deaths head one might be neat on the death card. :o)
I saw mention of the egg case on the female..this is true as well. Also if you frighten her to the point of thinking she is in a life and death situation or if you kill her she drops the sac from her body and the babies will still live. So there is some information for you on roaches. HAHA.

Fascinating. In the bar I worked at, we had one of those little under the bar shelves where we kept shot glasses...and there was a small flourescent light fixture over it...and I remember those shotglasses and the area around them was overrun by the littlest roaches. Teeny tiny, maybe just hatched ones. Probably the glasses had residue on them from the booze, maybe they were eating the sugar...but they didn't seem to mind the light.

Eeek...tarantulas. Thank God my brothers, who were into snakes and lizards, never got into the spider thing....but my best friend's brother was, he had a tarantula named Agnes. I always felt sort of bad for her, he kept her in a plastic aquarium that wasn't much bigger than she was.

I like the idea of the dirty glass instead of cups, the box of Borax for death - or even a pic of a Roach Motel - "roaches check in, but they don't check out" - or a can of Raid with a few belly up dead roaches around it....so many funny ideas.

Love that 3 of Cups, it looks like a roasted cockroach salad! I've had a soft spot for roaches since I played the computer game Bad Mojo, where you got to be a bug and avoid getting squashed or eaten. I once had an art school friend who would trap the roaches in his apartment, paint their carapaces bright colors, and turn them loose again. He had jeweled cockroaches running all over the place. Today the ASPCA or PETA would probably find a way to crucify him, but it was funny at the time.

I'm not sure if it's the pipe or the hat that did me in.

Wondering idly what kind of wings your guide might have.

Yes! That is how an angel should look! I always think of angels as protectors. This guy could protect a whole crowd...and he's yummy! :)

Just like some publishers, some female cockroaches can remain pregnant forever and produce up to 150 offspring per year!

for some reason my inner cockroach keeps drawing me towards fine art - perhaps the little bugger (pun) is an embodiment of spiritual dignity which must be restored to the world of tarot... or perhaps because it is easier to use already created pictures with photoshop...

I'll admit that it's an interesting idea for a deck. That said.... I'm originally from the Bronx. Cockroaches are the enemy. I couldn't use this deck. Too icky for me. Way too many bad experiences with these critters!

Nicky, i just discovered this thread. [i must have turned the lights on just quick enough! :P]

And, even though i have my own issues with the C Roaches...this is a profound reminder that EVERYTHING is Divine and has it's purpose to fulfill. i commend you and support you in this!
