So,yesterday I bought the French Cartomancy kit. Then I looked at the card meanings on the forum and they are not coresponding with the ones in the book I receved with the kit.I also saw some strange things in that book, like the reversed meanings of the cards,etc..What shall I do?To use the interpretations in the book or the ones from the site?

I am a relative newbie, too, so I can identify with your problem.

What I have learned is that there are few hard and fast rules in any oracle; it ultimately comes to what feels right to you. There are a few different schools of interpretation of the Lenormand cards as well as personal additions from each of the writers, based on their personal experience. If you read the various meanings for each card from all the different sources you will notice that no card seems to have a single meaning; many can change based on influences of the cards around them.

What most experienced Lenormand users advise is to pick one system and stick with that one. What I have done is read through the meanings by different sources and picked what seems “right” to me. I am sure that over time I will adjust my interpretations to fit my own experience.

So I suggest you read as much as you can from the links offered in the “Free Lenormand Resources Thread”, read and follow the “Daily Draw Practice” and “Practice Monthly/ general GTs” threads and see what interpretations and connections that the people here make that correspond to the various cards. Then look at your own cards and formulate your own interpretations based on what makes the most sense to you.

Also you can look on Youtube and find some people giving Lenormand readings that you may find find helpful.

I think Tag_jorrit and Halil have given you sound advice.

There are a few Lenormand schools, the German and French being the most prolific. The Spanish is nearly identical to the German, the Netherland (Belgium included) is sub-French, and the Russian seems quite German, and the Brazilian is rather unique. You then have Sylvie Steinbach (French based), Mario dos Ventos (German-ish), Iris Treppner (German based), Titania Hardie (Russian based) in English.

If you speak German or Dutch, you can get a very good book by Erna Droesbeke. Alternatively, there are good meaning lists on here or on the net. Basically, to get started, you’d only need one or two meanings per card – like a noun and adjective i.e. Dog – friend and friendly.

Once you’ve chosen a source, stick to it. If you factor in one or two sources, you’ll get muddied combinations.

With the schools there isn’t really one better than the other. Similarities do outweigh their differences in meanings, but each has a few different rules on interpretation. So it’s going to be based on your need for aid in interpretation. There’s more sources for the German school in English than the French. The Germans don’t use ‘near and far’ too, which is used in the French and Netherlands.

Bear in mind, traditional Lenormand is more symbol-association based rather than pictorial. For example, meanings will be on what is associated with A Fox, rather than THE Fox on the card. You could go the other way, and do intuitive readings with the cards but that isn’t Lenormand, traditionally. As such, I can’t see any need for reversals.

good advice for me as well ;). Her name looks even Dutch to me, (or Belgian, though definite not German). A sort of medieaval Dutch name, not really common.

I think she's Belgian Moira. Her books available in Dutch, German, and possibly French. It was the first English Lenormand book (1988) but is out of print. Slim but better than most.
