View Full Version : How to use Grand tablau?
I want to try the Grand tablau (GT). i have been studying different ways to do them both on AT and on other online sites. however, i am so confused. It seems some use the GT to predict a 12 month period. Some use it to predict a months time period. others use it to answer a specific question while others say its not designed to answer a specific question.
i want to be able to use a GT to predict what will happen in my life within a months time period ..both generally and with specific questions. do any of you use the GT regularly for this purpose?
and i am so confused. I found this site on the web and the reader used House Interpretations to interpret her GT:

my question is this: the cards that she mentioned as "Houses" are those constant? that means if a card falls within that position is that card always going to be in that house that she has designated? and also, does a card have to fall in that specific position to be in a "house" or are there designated boundaries that determine where a house ends and where one begins (like state lines or country borders)?
The Grand Tableau will cover the time frame you set it to. Most use three, six or twelve months’ time. So for you, you’d say three months because that’s your intent. I tried monthly tableaus, and found them more watery as it's a big spread for such a short time frame.
Regarding the houses, they are the positions on the tableau i.e. position one is Cavalier because the Cavalier is card 1, and position twelve the Birds because the Birds are card 12. They'll always be those houses because of the number the cards carry. Although, when you deal out a tableau you'll get different cards in most houses each time. So if you have Tree in position one, you could say there, for example, there’s news on health (Tree in House 1). If you had High Tower in House 12 (Birds) you might say, there's an official telephone call coming. Houses add a little extra information.
There’s a big thread on here with people’s tableaus which might help you, Jayce travel does a brilliant series on her blog, and I have a posts on my blog on how I use them and two examples.

Ohmy, thank you andy! that makes so much sense and makes everything much clearer!
yes, i know of jayce's blog. i think in their example they used a 12 month one? and i know of yours too! I printed out the material to both of your methods to study. so im very pleased and excited that you took the time to help me :-)
Hi Olivia,
I've had a lot of success using GTs for specific questions, specific time periods (I have more success with 1 month than 1 year), and for general questions. In many ways, a GT is no different than a 5 card layout - you're still focusing on what you want the cards to tell you about, you're just using all 36 cards to give you the answer.
In the beginning, I think it's easier to learn how to read a GT just by laying out the spread and examining the card combinations. As you get more experienced, you can add in houses, knights, mirrors, etc to get more detail.

Thank you, Halil!
you are an angel :-) i already printed out some of the threads from above but some of the other ones you mentioned, i didnt know about so thank you!!
ok, i know some dont advocate charging cards but since the reading is about me, naturally, im going to charge the woman as me. I know that is not necessary since its already a given but i do it anyway.
my question is this: if you already have a friend in mind that you want to include in the GT, is it ok to designate them as the dog?
because i already have a love interest. in my GT, I made him the Dog so that I could leave the Man free to signify potential new men coming into my life. is this ok?
i did a GT and the Dog and the Man both fell into the future position.
and i have another question. pretend that the man fell into the past. if i didnt designate him as anyone in particular, would he represent one of the many men i have known in my life or would he just be my experience with men in general?
sorry for all the questions.

I don’t think it’s unnecessary to charge a card in a tableau, if that is what you want to do. The no layout is very much based on a tableau, just abbreviated.
The Dog is: a man, friend, friendliness and warmth. In tableau’s I have done for women who are married, and have been for some time, the Dog has often cropped up as their husband, and the Gentleman has been a brother or adult son.
So it’s perfectly adept to represent that.
However, a card can, at times, be more than one person in any tableau. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s not unknown of. This frequently happens with the Child, if the person has two children.
If you’re charging a card, I would assume that that is signifying a specific intent and therefore removing that possibility in your mind. Leaving it open, you’d do best to ‘profile it’.
To ascertain who the Gentleman is: read the cards around him, especially horizontally and vertically touching him, to get a description.
Should the Gentleman be in the past, he’ll still be a man rather than an experience, in my experience. It doesn’t mean he’s necessarily left your life, unless accompanied by the Scythe, Coffin, or has the Cross to his right. It just means he’s involved in a role that’s not ‘new’ or ‘forthcoming’.
I use GTs regularly for months, for half years and for specific questions. I've been doing this for years, they work perfectly well as long as I keep myself unbiased by my own thoughts and wishes. Cards in the GT are already "charged", I don't see a point to do it again. And actually, most of the cards cover more than one person/meaning at least 85% of the time both in my own and in spreads I've done for other people. For example, the Dog may be my male friend or ex in the horizontal and a female friend vertically, and something/someone else in the diagonals. And all cards have proven to work this way which often shows after the time frame has passed because I can rarely guess all they point at, not because it's not possible but because I'me being lazy usually. LOL

I agree with what everything you say, Ronia. As I said above, cards do frequently represent more than one person. Not always, but often.
I don't really see much use in the monthly tableaus. That's me personally though.
I do think if someone wants to charge, then it is necessary to charge the cards. I don't personally, but I know people who do. It's intent and part of their approach so thereby necessary to them. But all areas are there anyway :)
I think what it does is narrow the scope as you decide that card is X alone.
Edit to say - Olivia are you going to post your GT? If not, try and write it down, as you'll probably want to review it
It goes back to the no layout origins. An abbreviation of the tableau.

yes, andy, i will post it! although i redid it so it could be 3 months..although i hope its accurate because i did pull a 3month one before but couldnt remember the cards. and with that one i assigned a question. this time i just labeled it as a 3 month general for myself
