medical uses of Calcite and other crystals

Padma

Ok, so now I have a bone that needs to be dug up. I am trying to find studies on the medical uses and applications of Calcite (green or other colour) and of other crystals. I will post any link to a certifiable source of information (clinical, geological or scientific) that I can find in the healing uses of crystals. This does *not* include any form of metaphysical ("New Age") anecdotal evidence.

If you care to trawl the web with me, perhaps we can come up with a number of factual, scientifically researched healing applications/studies of stones and crystals :)

I will post as I find...I have found an interesting study on plant steroids, where they actually reduce the plant into crystals, which are then ground and used in medicine (Aryuvedic, principally) but I am not sure if that counts as crystal, so I will leave that one out. Here is a geological page on the uses (medicinal and otherwise) of Calcite (since I began searching for that.)

ETA - Also, on Amazon, I did find a dissertation that is available to order called:

Dissertation: Crystal Medical Uses of the Research Scientist for Advancement of Biochemical and Medical Technologies [Hardcover] by Maria S. Hammock.

and so obviously some studies are being made in that direction. ;)

and also, crystals are used to create several different pieces of medical equipment...indirectly related to healing, of course. http://www.cradley-crystals.com/CCinit.php?id=applic

From the reading I have done this afternoon, it is becoming increasingly clear to me that certain crystals such as calcite harbour some bacterial life forms that are very useful in the field of biomedicine to control disease (primarily of the digestive tract) and are increasingly being used to create more stable cements to use in the maintenance of building materials, creating much more stable bonding of the stones to the cement. So far, so good...so, some crystals are useful ;) Certainly calcite has been used in optics and optometrics, due to its ability (in certain forms) to display birefringence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcite

Rubies (synthetically created) were the driving force behind lasers. Lasers are used medically to cut more precisely than scalpels. Lasers are used for tattoo removal, scar treatment, and to induce healing, among other things. Ruby lasers have since been replaced with more useable argon lasers...

Fascinating...I finally found a group of researchers looking at possible health benefits of crystals...

"Since 1996 a scientific group in Germany has
been doing empirical research on the health effects of
crystals. Seventy different study units are investigating four
crystals each year. As of July 2004, 40 different minerals
had been tested. Their findings are published in a magazine
called Opalitho. All reports include physical,
spiritual, and emotional effects [30]."

I quoted this from www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/3/4/338/pdf which is a PDF format doc written by/featured in: International Journal of
Environmental Research and Public Health

ETA I found the magazine (I think!) but as I cannot read German, I am unable to find the study results... :(

and now I have chased down a proposal from a doc at McMasters U in Canada to study the use of crystals ... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1787813 however, he does not seem to have yet concluded his written study. Nice to know it is being taken seriously, however...

and I did find a study that cites several links for information on crystal healing, and offers interesting conclusions on the effctiveness of placebo therapies...the author of the study (a psychology student) concluded that until more scientific and clinical tests are done, no true conclusion can be reached...it was an interesting read though, and provides many citations and links for further reading...

Now, I am just fascinated by the topic of piezoelectricity, and its application in medicine...

Quartz crystals are most useful for producing the effect.

"Surgery

A recent application of piezoelectric ultrasound sources is piezoelectric surgery, also known as piezosurgery.[32] Piezosurgery is a minimally invasive technique that aims to cut a target tissue with little damage to neighboring tissues. For example, Hoigne et al.[33] reported its use in hand surgery for the cutting of bone, using frequencies in the range 25–29 kHz, causing microvibrations of 60–210 μm. It has the ability to cut mineralized tissue without cutting neurovascular tissue and other soft tissue, thereby maintaining a blood-free operating area, better visibility and greater precision."

This was quoted from Wikipedia...

Gosh, but crystals are useful!

hmm. Further reading of the PDF doc I posted earlier (see post # 5) reveals this about Malachite:

"Little research exists as to the actual curative and
palliative qualities of minerals. However, the actual healing
signature of one mineral that had been used for over 5000
years [27] was demonstrated in an in-vitro experiment. The
purported anti-microbial properties of malachite were verified
in a preliminary study with Staphylococcus aureus and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Limpitlaw, unpublished data).
This study showed that knowledge of healing properties of
certain minerals existed and was utilized for millennia."

Interesting!

ETA: Please note that this - and any information posted here - is posted merely as an interesting bit of quoted information from a respectable source and is NOT a recommendation to use Malachite (or other stones) medically.

****PLEASE NOTE: There are different forms of malachite, and one is highly toxic. Please refer to The Crowned One's post (#31) in this thread: http://tarotforum.net/showthread.php?p=3234650&posted=1#post3234650 ******

ALSO PLEASE NOTE that in *NO WAY* do I condone, suggest or encourage the eating of crystals, or the drinking of elixirs made from them, as this practice is VERY dangerous. Many stones contain lethal amounts of toxic substances and therefore ALL use of crystals should be approached with common sense, and *NEVER* used as a substitute for any certifiable professional, modern medical care.

Stones should be purchased at reliable, government-regulated retail outlets, who follow the importation codes and laws of your country of residence. Please do not take any chances with your health based on the "suggested" and hypothetically implied
metaphysical properties ascribed to crystals. While they may be pretty as jewellery and nice as part of your decor, and cause your watch to keep time and facilitate the creation of medical equipment, they are *NOT* intended or recommended as internal medicine of any kind!

I found all this very interesting indeed! I have not had time to read everything yet but I sure will. What a nice thread. Thank you for starting this LP :)
