View Full Version : Tarot & Cats, do they attract like minds?

I cannot help draw a correlation between tarot readers and owning pet cats. I seems to me that most readers prefer cats. Those that do not believe in tarot or other metaphysical aspects choose to have dogs as their companions.

I also own a dog but, I am more partial to cats.

What about the rest of you?

I love all animals, but I must say that cats have a very special place in my heart and home -- they seem to be inordinately attracted to areas where energy is concentrated, such as around tarot readings and hands-on healing sessions.

My cat is low maintenance; my dog is just a pain in the butt. :) I can't say that for every dog because it's simply not true. I just happen to have a tiny, bed hogging, mailmain chasing, super yapping Yorkshire Terrier. He's very devoted, so I can't hate him. My cats have always been so much easier, though. Feed me and occasionally rub my fur, they say. hehe It doesn't help dogs much that you can't leave them at home with a litter box when you go out of town.
On the other hand, if I have spread my cards out on the floor, my cats tend to come over and lay on them. This goes for board games also. They just like the feel of them I guess. Or perhaps they are giving me a little extra "mojo". lol

Cats all the way. I'm a cat lover, I think that not only they're special, they're beautiful and perfect, in every angles. They have a mind of their own, it's like interracting with a person; there's a deep connection underneath, I don't know how to say that, but it's like if you don't need to talk with them. Cats love and enjoy these kinds of closure : mind, body and soul. I don't feel that with dogs. And it's true that cats are low maintenance.

This was a hard vote for me.

I've had dogs all my life.

My dad hated cats (until he got remarried and his new family had them, that is). Growing up = no cats in this house.

My husband is deathly allergic to cats. If I even pet a cat, he will start sneezing around me later that day. As imagined, he absolutely hates cats with a passion.

But ... you know ....

Lately I'm wanting a cat. Two dogs are enough pets for me right now, but lately ... especially watching my son's fondness for cats ... I'm wishing I had a cat.

But my favorite pet I've ever ever EVER had ... was a ferret.

I love both, and although I only have the 1 cat at the moment, I would love a dog in the future! But, I had to vote cats, lol. Dogs are loyal, steadfast friends, and they do as you tell them. Cats, on the other hand, are stroppy, irritable, moody, demanding and aloof. They always get thier own way. A prime example; cats have cat flaps and go out when they feel like it. I cant help admireing that, lol.

I love almost all animals (I'm such a sucker), but cats are special for me. I always wanted one when I was younger and I was ecstatic when I finally got one. I have a wonderful cat with a great personality.

I do have to say though, that I also love birds. They're highly underestimated as pets.

Dogs, dogs, dogs all the way.
Followed by rats which are really lovely pets. Almost as smart as cats only major drawback is their very short lifespan only about 2 years.
And by rabbits (for more info about pet rabbits in the home see http://www.rabbit.org/ ). They are wonderful pets, too!
Cats are great in other peoples homes.;)

MMmm, I love cats, cats over dogs anyday. My favorite cat is siamese cats! THey are so bratty, it's great. I giggle and laugh at their noses stuck in the air and their playful roughness. They have spunk and attitude, definitely the Queens and Kings of the house cat kingdom! Although, it is very nice to have a soft sweet loving lap cat to cuddle up with while watching movies.

We don't have any pets right now, although my daughter said she wanted a fish so she could eat it...Hmmmm.

Cats. Four. I attract them; we theorise that there is a cat-visible "Sucker Sign" over our door. "Get the Lush Life Here!" Every three to five years, so far, another cat has appeared in my life.

I like dogs, but, as with children, am not sure I want to LIVE with dogs. One day, if we ever get a house with a proper garden, we may get a dog to go with it. The cats will be terribly unimpressed!

Tarot also attracts cats; I like to read cross-legged on the floor, and the whisper of cards hitting carpet invariably wakes slumbering creatures from all over the house, luring them to come and do little cat dances over and around the cards, or simply spread themselves fluffily on top of the spread!

I had to vote other...because I can't really say that I prefer one over the other.

Both are great for fuzz-therapy!

Dogs are great at being all there for you, constantly devoted and great at taking your mind off of things that stress you out...

Cats purr. There is nothing more relaxing and stress-reducing than having a cat just sit on you and purr....

The dogs used to love and sit with me when I was doing readings, and watch every move, while my cat used to pick the most inappropriate times to come over and sit down on my spread.

In my current apartment, there are no big pets allowed, so we have had a succession of sweet fuzzy mice, and a very loud and yappy zebra finch!

I love all animals.. but I have to say I am more of a dog person than a cat person... It could be bc I have never had a cat, but a dog most of my life... They are so much fun.

However, lately I have developed a love of smaller animals.. i adore guinea pigs (have 2) and would like a rabbit..

So, I couldn't vote bc I can't make up my mind between Dogs and Other....

Cats, cats, cats all the way! :)
Sorry Woof... Just had to get that in. LOL

We have two dogs, two cats and some fish. We've also been parents to rabbits, a ferret, a rat, guinea pigs and assorted other small animals. However, cats are what I am most drawn to - and they to me. I would have a house full of cats if my hubby allowed it. :) Our dogs are hyper and love to roughhouse, they're messy and much more time is involved with dog care. I like how cats are independent creatures and yet they still enjoy a snuggle... or sitting on my tarot cards! :)

CompassRose, I think my mother has a sign like that on her house, too. Every stray animal finds its way to her. It seems like at least once a month she calls to tell me about a new one and ask me if I want "another" cat. :) I think she unknowningly sends out loving vibes that attracts them; she is just brimming with care for animals.

hmmm, never had a relationship to a cat. Don't know what to do with them. Of course, I did have jack russel terrier...He even caught a mouse. We were very very proud of him when he caught his first mouse. He was very proud of himself too, he brought the mouse right up to me, dropped him at my feet, and looked up at me laughing -- "SEE!! HAHA! I DID IT!"

Unfortunately, I didn't see, and I stepped on it with my bare foot by accident, and then I screamed very loud. Poor doggie.

Aside from the fact that he looked like a rabbit when he ran, he was mostly dog, and only partly cat.

Cats do seem to be more connected to Tarot. They are both mysterious, deep, curious about the world. Cats are often associated with the black arts and things as well, and I think this is part of the reason. I've had a total of 5 cats at separate times (it took a while for me to get a female, the only one who's managed to stay alert and therefore alive :D). I've had one dog my whole life who passed away last year. She was great, but I do have a preference of cats to dogs. They're clean, they're soft, and they don't smell! They also don't make a lot of noise and aren't as demanding. They tend to think more for themselves.

However, my favourite animal is without a doubt the rabbit. I've had 12, and I miss them.

My old signature mark: >^.^<

Sooooo true, lilsher!!! I don't know if they're telling me how to do it right or what......

I had to chack off other..... would have preferred to check BOTH..... all animals have my heart!!

Dogs teach me alot about childmindedness... i loooove their bounding and their insistence that we play, play, play, now, now, now!!!! Dogs love to receive Reiki much more than cats do, but cats will help me Reiki someone!!

I have a Chausie cat who is very doglike.... he is as big as a small dog and does everything but bark! He brings me gifts, like huge paint brushes and bottles of beads. He loves to have his fur rubbed both ways and his belly rubbed, which is weird for a cat.... He is a mix of Tabby and African Wild Cat, so he is not an ordinary cat...... I think the Universe understood my need for both cat and dog.......

One day, i hope to have a little land so i can have dogs..... they are amazing beings (I think they are wise old angels) :)

Mother doesn't want a dog.
Mother says they smell,
And never sit when you say sit,
Or even when you yell.
And when you come home late at night
And there is ice and snow,
You have to go back out because
The dumb dog has to go.

Mother doesn't want a dog.
Mother says they shed,
And always let the strangers in
And bark at friends instead,
And do disgraceful things on rugs,
And track mud on the floor,
And flop upon your bed at night
And snore their doggy snore.

Mother doesn't want a dog.
She's making a mistake.
Because more than this dog , I think
She will not want this snake.

I like all animals, but I'm more of a cat person. Maybe more tarotists have cats than dogs because tarot is more of an indoor activity (I know this isn't always the case), but dogs seem to vibe with more "outdoorsy" people.

Kitties! Definitely. I love cats, and luckily so does my other half, so when we get a place that's suitable, we're turning it into kitty heaven.

I love fluffy bunnies and chinchillas too. Basically, I'm a girly girl when it comes to animals; I like 'em small and fluffy. (strange, the rest of me does not fit that image at all).

I think the reason that I prefer cats to dogs is that I was attacked by a dog when I was a child, and was terrified of them for years. I still don't like big ones.

definitely cats! both the aloof type and the affectionate type. i've always has at least one cat for as long as i can remember. i like dogs too, but prefer cats for the reasons that hudson gray mentioned. also, i feel that my connection with cats goes beyond a mere pet-owner relationship.. there's also a spiritual connection that i feel with them

I have had the cat I have now for almost 10 years. That is longer than any serious committed relationship I have ever had-not counting my 14 year old daughter of course.

She drives me crazy at times by invariably sitting on my cards when I have just shuffled and spread my cards for my morning reading, and she likes to lay her little head on the pillow I keep my cards under. So, your probably right, cats and tarot seem connected to one another some how.

But no matter what she does I can't stay angry at her. How can I be angry when watching her snore and meow in her sleep?
She's so cute sometimes. It's what saves her life sometimes-lol-I know my couch isn't in the condition it used to be-sigh.

Sometimes I think I would like to get a little dog when she's gone-but a little cat-dog I think-maybe a daschund.

I can relate to Celeste's post: My relationship with my oldest cat (6 yrs.) has lasted longer than any relationship I've had with an S.O.

Anyway, I clearly prefer cats to dogs. Dogs are more demanding, they salivate on you, and many of them don't smell all that great. They're of course higher maintenance too.

It's funny--I sometimes joke with my current partner and tell him that if things don't work out, I'll surely end up an old cat lady! (Speaking of old cat ladies, are you all familiar with the Crazy Cat Ladies Society? http://www.crazycatladies.org)

My cats are more than pets--they're my family. In fact, sometimes I like them better than most people! I invite you to visit my cats, Fionn, Brigid, and Maeve, at

Hummm...

I have 4 cats, 2 dogs a dalmation and a beasett hound (a tarot deck mauling bassett- beagle mix), and 5 Ball Pythons.

The best behaved and least trouble to care for : The snakes
but they are also the least snugglable. They show no interest in tarot. However a "tarot of the rats" might spark a reaction.

The worst at shedding: the dalmation
the snakes shed about once a month but at least they don't do so on the furniture.

The beasett mauled my Legends deck ( BAD DOG !!!!!!)

My best friend for 23 years was my cat Munchkin.

Anyone need another hint?

Although I like nearly all animals (no cockroaches and other kind of nasty insects) I am a cat person.

I have 4 cats who all love to sneak into my reading room (that is the only room they are not allowed to enter all day long alone as there is a carpet and new rattan furnishing in it).

I love cats. I had up to four cats at a time before I had children. They were my family. I had siamese burmese orientals and bitsers. Since having a family have settled for one cat whom is still part of the family. I resently have gotten into fish though. My cat seems to like them too spending a good deal of time gazing at the fish tanks and drinking from my Chinese Fighter Fish tank (not sure if he wants the fish or the fishy water???).

I adore cats, and have two beauties who rule my house and my life with iron paws clad in velvet. I love their mystery, the way they look inquiringly at me - I know they think humans are so strange always rushing about on silly errands when they could be taking it easy on the sofa or in the garden, watching the world go by.
I wouldn't rule out having a dog - quite like the idea but I travel a lot and dogs are so much more dependent. My cats let me go away when I like; they sulk and rough me up a bit when I come back, but forgive me quite soon afterwards.
It doesn't surprise me so many tarotists are into cats - both Tarot and cats have an intriguing sense of mystery about them. Can anyone ever fully understand either? I don't think so.

I love puppy dogs! Every dog I have ever had has been wonderful. Especially my beloved Pepper :( who died tragically at 10 years old.

I voted other.

I believe Mystic Zyl's theory may be correct, but if I had to choose between a dog and a cat, I would take a dog any day. The way they tend to adore their owners (instead of the other way round with cats) is endearing. As it is, I'm more partial to fat hamsters and guinea pigs (had one greedy fella named Henry the Eighth), or fish, or reptiles. Apologies to insect lovers, but for me insects are for squishing - except cockroaches, which are for running away from.

LadyMedusa, I sympathize and agree completely with what you've said.... that Dalmatian fur is like Velcro - it sticks to everything... I find it nearly impossible to get our furniture free of Dalmatian fur unless I take sticky tape and pull it out. :( Our other dog is a Shepherd/husky mix and his long, thick fur comes out in little clumps that vacuum up nicely. However, like your basset, our shepherd had a nasty chewing habit that ruined many of my books (as well as clothing, draperies, carpet and a portion of our wooden deck!) before we were able to break him of it.

smitten with felines ...

Cats don't bark and are far more self-sufficient than dogs. But always wished I could leash train cats! Dogs have the portability feature.
Cat do have sense of independence, altho I've found them to be quite loyal and very trainable.
Such a cozy feeling to have furry Nigel lie on my chest and purr while gazing into my eyes... not many humans can be so devoted! -- but I only occasionally prefer cats to humans ;)

My favorite cartoon is in two panels:

The first shows a dog gazing at its owner, saying,"She feeds me, she brushes me, she attends to my every need. She must be a god!"

The second shows a cat gazing at its owner, saying,"She feeds me, she brushes me, she attends to my every need. I must be a god!"

Notwithstanding, I love cats.

What a great thread! It's so fun to read what pets everybody lives with. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs, and I like them all equally. All of them are outside pets, but I have to say the cats have much nicer manners than the dogs. The cats are PissAnt and Fuzzball, the dogs (beagles) are Utensil and Sapphire.

I voted 'other'.

I've had cats I had a very strong connection to, I have a dog now that I feel the same way towards.
I also have two cats right now that I love very much, but that I don't feel exactly the same, almost 'sisterly' bond with that I have had with two cats in my past and that I have with my dog right now.

It all depends on the individual cat/dog/other in my case, I think.

It's cats for me too. I have three of them. I like Kater (that's his name) the most, though, and what's really fun about him is that he found us! One day he suddenly appeared at our house and meowed for food. He kept coming back, so we hung up flyers and stuff, but no one came for him, so we took him in. He's great, if he could talk he would be totally like Hobbes :) (the cartoon tiger, not the philosopher).

Cats definitely have something mysterious about them. Sometimes my cats can suddenly stare at the wall of a room, like there's someone there (remember the movie Ghost?). This one time I let my cat in the bedroom of my parents; she came in, stared at something in the middle of the room and ran away as quickly as she could... And Kater has come repeatedly into the room when we were Ouija-boarding (I know Ouija-boards are dangerous, don't do it anymore now).

I don't like dogs that much, because, just like Dark Angel, a dog attacked me when I was little. Plus, our neighbours now have two dogs and they bark constantly! We can hardly go in our garden anymore without them barking! That of course doesn't mean that there aren't some very nice dogs out there!

Hi TygrEyes - I have a Siberian kitten (along with a rescue cat) and Siberians are supposed to be okay for people with allergies. No-one is sure whether this is really true, it hasn't been tested, but it seems to be something to do with the fact that their coats are different from that of other cats. Anyway, just a thought. Maybe file it away in the back of your mind. We didn't get our Sib for this reason - it's more that we fell in love. She is known by us sometimes as "Zen-cat" as she is utterly calm and happy in most circumstances. Even when we first brought her home she coped terribly well.

Anyway - can you judge from all this that I voted for cats? I like dogs too but I was brought up with cats, my first ever memory is of crawling on a carpet and meeting a cat face-to-face, and I really never feel completely happy unless I am sharing my life with at least one cat.

Oh - and there is something I half want to say about this, but maybe it's not time. Anyway, let's just say we will have more than one cat in the next deck and leave it at that - she shuffles off quietly - we'll have something to show after Christmas.

Oh I'm not trying to tease, honestly, but this time we have decided to do all 78 sketches before any final cards and the sketches just look too rough to show - impossible to imagine how they will really be. It's all taking much longer than we expected (oh dear, I seem to have said that before :-) ). We always seem to do things the hard way.

I would LOVE to begin showing it all. But I'm being self-disciplined (for once!)

On the subject of catnip though - we got some dried for our "girls" and they loved it. Now I think I'll have to get some real seeds and grow some for them in the spring.

I'm also wondering why there is such a strong association between liking animals - but especially cats - and liking tarot. But maybe that question is a bit off-thread?

Oh, yes - and the best, I bet (besides the one with your child)! My cat - the mysterious Max, always on the wrong side of every door - has chosen me 11 years ago and I wouldn't want to miss him...

Max has, for places to sit or lie on, a preference for my cards, my diary, every book I want to read, the keyboard of my computer, my knees, almost in that order. Sometimes it just drives me crazy, but then again it's so sweeeeet...

As you all can see, I really prefer the purring of a cat to the barking of a dog (although all animals seem to be attracted to me, and I give as much love as I can).

PS: just wanted to add something:

the question came up why it was that a majority of Tarot-likers are also cat-likers - is not off-thread, I think, wasn't it included in the original question? I'll have a go at a self-made explanation - are Tarot and Cats not both indissociably linked with the image we want to have? (i.e. aren't we all thinking, at least a little bit, of ourselves as witches :D :D :D?)

Thirty years ago we had a Red Setter dog who was just beautiful and I adored him.

Since then I have always had cats who have found me. My first was Mischka who as a kitten got caught in the engine of a motor car she was sleeping in and nearly died. She just walked into my arms when her carer was looking for a home and stayed for 11 years until she died.

Morgaine, the Witch Cat, belonged to my sister and came to me when Franny died 13 years ago. She was a wild young thing then and is a peaceful loving old thing now. At this very moment she is sitting on my table looking at a spread of tarot cards I have laid out.

doggies doggies doggies!!!1 All the way... I have a very high maintance Black lab, named Bingo ( Bob for short) and he reads Tarot with me ;)

I have had a couple of cats... they really don't thrill me because they are tooooo independent I think... Doggies always love you and need affection and when you are blue... they comfort you.

Thanks everyone for your touching stories of love and devotion.
Personally I have never had to buy a cat or a dog for a pet, the universe just sends them. Usually when my pet find me they are in distress. I even own a cat that is feline leukemia positive, it is sometimes hard to keep him separate from the other 5 cats in my home as he wants so much to play with them. However, he plays with my Rottweiler, all the rest of my cats are afraid of the dog. I know the vet recommended that I put him to sleep because of his health, but I just did not feel I had the right to end a life. He now resides in my home quarantined, but happy and healthy. He has a very resiliant personality and has the heart of a lion (very brave). I am blessed to have his company.

wow... glad to see that the survey is still going strong and that cats are so beloved by taroters.

Cats may have a reputation for being aloof/distant, but I think that both dogs and cats will respond to people relative how they've been socialized.

(does it show, much, that I'm pro-cat? :) )

I'm confused by the poll question which gives only three options "Cat", "Dog" and "Other".

Let's take an example:

Person X doesn't like animals at all.

Person Y doesn't like cats or dogs, but likes another type of animal, i.e., birds.

Do both Person X and Person Y vote "Other"?

i love dogs, i am not a cat person. i have had dogs and tried to have a cat, but it just did not work, i gave the cat away to a family member that was really good with cats.
i have to agree with majecot, i think cats are a little too independent.

Mystic Zyl

Well, Rusty, laughing, I really did not mean this as a scientific poll.
The poll only left me four spaces to put names of animals. Being cats and dogs are the most owned pets, I put their names. I could have chosen another pet, however I was unsure to put as the third category. As you may see in the posts there is a large variety of preferences for the "other" vote.

Rusty, person X would not even bother with the poll if they hated animals. Yes, person Y would vote for "other".
But I feel this a real hypothetical question. But as the saying goes, you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Thanks to all the people that did enjoy this thread. Sorry if I confused anyone.

Yeah, there is at least 82.......how does it go....cats rule and dogs drool.

I could not vote as I can not choose between animals...
I love my cats, but I also really love my friends' dog.
And maybe most of all, I love the pigs my brother has (the dutch for it is potbelly pigs but I don't know if this is what they are called in English), they are definitely very much attached to people they love and very intelligent, and totally underrated.
So I have to give my vote to the pigs - brutus and bora, i will support you !1

Wolf Spirit I would think you would vote for dogs seeing that you must like wolves. Pigs are cute and intelligent......but this takes back sometime long ago (6 of Cups) when the wolf says, "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down." I guess you and the pigs must have come to some agreement.

Just a thought...
I was kinda thinking that maybe this poll isn't quite accurate... After all ...It took me a long time before I opened it to read it because the title mentions Cats... no ofense to the cat lovers, but I am definately a Dog person.. ( so I kinda kept bypassing it until curiosity eventually made me look)
Any whoo.... I betcha there are lots of other dog people out there that did not vote for that same reason ....

So u suppose that maybe....erm ... the rest of Aecletic are Dog People too ?? :D

I'd have to say that, overall, I get the impression that Aeclectic members are in favor of all animals, even if they have preferences. Everything in nature is there for a reason, and you have to respect that! Even if you like cats over dogs, or vice versa (or snakes, or ferrets, whatever)!

Definitely!

And I think that it is not necessarily we who choose the animal, but the animal (or the spirit of its kind) that chooses us to make us see something (the amount of things I have already learned from my cat is amazing!)

That is true.. the animal does choose us... Over the course of my life I have had more dogs ( and ok sometimes they drool :joke: ) choose me than cats have.
I have had a tabby and a long haired black kitty ( who was the absolute bomb) that lived with me.. 1 German Shepard mix and 2 Shelties and now a Lab, chose to be my pal :D

It's exactly how it happened with my cats. My first cat belonged to the neighbour, and she wanted to get rid of him, so I took him with me. He passed away a few years ago. I found the cat that I have two years ago, the day after Christmas, hidden under a car. I brought him back home and never regretted it. I never shopped around to get a cat. I believe pets come to you.

I have three cats; the first two I got from a litter my big sis had; I was promised one but I could not choose and I did not want to separate them. Then the third one was a sweet stray who fitted in nicely.
My house is full now, but another stray has turned up and upsets my cat community; fortunately I know a farmer who is looking for an outdoors cat and I think this one will be perfect for him, it will just be a major operation to get him there ;)
Animals will probably keep dropping by here, but I enjoy them lots.

Hello dear friends,

Did you know that Bast is the Goddess of cats?

Catss in Egypt were associated with both Bast and Pasht (the Moon). Pasht is the dark side of Bast. She is the Lady of the East, the mother of all cats and wife of the God, Ptah. Although she is said to be the living power and gentle heat of the sun, through her sacred cats she is connected with the moon.

Bast is portraayed with a cat head. She is also the goddess of fire, the Moon. childbirth, fertility, benevolence, sexual rites, music, dance, protection against disease and evil spirits, intuition, healing, marriage. and all animals (especially cats).

I LOVE cats. I loved them as a child-we had 2 at home, not at the same time-and I love them even more now. I am now married with 3 children and we have a lovely ginger cat living with us-my husband acquired him from a cats' refuge 12 years ago. In fact, he says it was the cat who did the choosing! I love the intuition cats have-mine always seems to know if I'm distressed. I love their appearance, their elegance, their texture, their mystery-you get the picture !

And, yes, I do have the Bohemian Cats Tarot. Also, a very lovely statue of Bast-it's only 35 cm tall so very domestic-feeling, which is what Bast was (Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess, was more commonly worshipped in temples -at least, I think so.)

No, i don't hate dogs. I've known a few dogs as individuals and really enjoyed them. Also, again as a child, I always fancied I'd like a Dalmatian-there was one living near us-a superb and lively beast. I also like : Red Setters, Deerhounds, Weimaraners, Hungarian Viszlas, Samoyeds. . .and various sorts of terrier. Dogs are a LIKE. Cats are a LIFELONG LOVE-AFFAIR.

I had a Dalmatian for 11 years until 2001; he was mostly my dad's.

Within the past three weeks we've been adopted by a stray cat. I'm fairly certain he's smarter than the dog ever was. We got him one of those safety collars with a latch --- fuhgeddaboudit! The cat seems to have adjusted to our routine, rather than remaking it to centre around his. Dogs are the ultimate creatures of habit. Cats like surprises and like to be surprised.

The cat comes out to greet you when you come home from work, and the cat wants to play, but he isn't as urgent and insistent on it as the dog was. The dog would sleep all day and spring to life when you came home; you can tell that the cat has played with his cat toys, and slept, and done the regular cat things while you were gone; if it could open the food can itself you'd hardly be missed. The dog would wolf down any food it was given and then beg for more. The cat eats what it wants, when it wants. In short, the cat is more Like Us; the cat doesn't have all of these "co-dependency" issues the dog had. The cat seems saner than the dog. The cat is easier to get along with.

And what is more, my cats like tarot! One of them used to lay on the cards all the time! I had a client in and she laid down on the cards, and we tried to shoo her off and she hissed at us. (at the end of evening the client was saying goodbye and asked to pet my cat. "I want her to hiss at me one more time!") Hecate (RIP) always was a real charmer!

Cats are just better. ;)

My cats are really in tune with tarot/energy work. My kitten loves to lay on the cards, and sometimes just run back and forth over them. The last being a definite nono, as I don't want my cards bent. I know I'll have no peace if I pull out my Tarot de Paris: she adores the silk, and refuses to budge from on top of it. I don't really mind, though, I think she's just exchanging energy. Since cats are associated with the mysterious and occult, I like to think she's a familiar.

Plus cats smell better than dogs. :D

Cats. Grew up with them, prefer their attitudes and independence. Then we had a keeshond for years, loved him greatly and wouldn't have any other kind of dog (dry mouth, plush fur, very little smell).

Now we're back to cats and I won't be without them again :-)

Cats really are little psychic Geiger counters, aren't they? I couldn't meditate, do yoga, pray, or do Tarot without one of my kitties coming and "helping" by plopping down either on the cards or on me. (It's hard to do the cobra posture with a 10-lb. cat on your shoulders.)

Sadly, my kitties grew old and died. The last one passed on a week before I was diagnosed with a serious illness in 2003. I am now better but haven't gotten a new one, because I am worried about my immune system. I am considering going ahead anyway, though--I can hardly bear to be without their extraordinarily loving, knowing, idiosyncratic presence.

Our cats favourite time of the day is when Alex stands on his head every morning. They see this as an ideal time to get really, really close to his face - of course. I don't think it's ever occurred to them that this is not his main purpose.

I can't bear to be without cats either. If I were you I'd go ahead - you sound very caring and I'm sure it will work out.

I've always loved animals, period. Before I had any pets, I was partial to dogs. Then my mom allowed me to have a cat when I was 12, and I quickly realized that cats are just as loyal, affectionate, demonstrative, etc as dogs... BUT they don't demonstrate that affection in the same way. Once you know what to look for, however, there it is, as clear as though it's been written on a billboard.

I've never had a dog yet, but that's only because I haven't had a time in my life where I felt able to properly care for and train a dog. They need attention and training that, IMO, if I am not able to provide it, it would be unfair to the dog. So I've hit on a solution: I spoil my friends' dogs instead. ;)

Meanwhile, I've spent my energy making sure that my cats (I have one now, and there were two others who are no longer with us) are the most doted-on creatures on earth. ;)

I think I might be partial to cats a bit, now, because I've had so much experience with them. But the truth is, I never STOPPED doting on dogs just because I haven't had a dog yet. The only difference is that once I got my first cat, I learned more about cats and appreciated them better than I had before.

Cats AND dogs both make this world a better place, by virtue of their being on it. :)

My cats love my Tarot cards also. They sprawl all over them when I'm trying to read. Anything I'm focused on fascinates them, whether it's the cards, a book, knitting, whatever.

I would second what Baba Prague said. You sound as if you should have a cat.

Although I am a generally a cat person, I had one dog who was really a soul-mate. A Newfie mix, he was huge with a heart to match, and he was devoted. I miss him terribly.

I am definately a cat person. As a general rule I love all animals, but I feel a connection with cats that I don't with other animals. I have a Siamese cat, and I love him more than anything. He bites my ankles when I don't get his food ready fast enough, and if I don't get up with my alarm, he's in my face meowing his head off, and I love that he has this personality. When he looks up at me with those big blue eyes I'm done! He gets everything he wants. (I admit it, he's a very very spoiled young man!) I'm allergic to cats, but I love them so much, I'm willing to suffer (and vacuum and dust everyday:-)

I've loved animals since I was a child, when I felt more connected to them than my fellow humans. I still often am more fascinated by them and prefer their company to that of people. I feel an affinity with all animals, but tend to be drawn more to wild animals than domestic ones.

But I love companion animals as well, and like both cats and dogs.

I find that cats tend to be better companions for quiet and sedentary pursuits like reading and writing. And their behavior and personalities are fascinating.

But as much as I love cats, and our family cat at home, I never connect to them in the way I connect with dogs. Dogs are much more human. They are more social, more exuberant, more deeply emotional and emotionally expressive. They are much more tuned to human emotions than cats. Dogs learn behaviors more easily, are more perceptive about social signals, and tend to have better memories than cats. For example, no matter how many times I shove our cat away from me when I'm in a bad mood, she never "gets it" - our dog knows when it's a good idea to avoid me.

Dogs and humans have a relationship that extends back for thousands and thousands of years. Dogs have been by our sides, learning about us and living with us since we were wearing animal pelts and living in caves. To look into a dog's eyes is to look into a bond and an understanding that has developed for tens of thousands of years, and I always find I have deeper relationships with dogs than with cats, relationships that build on that ancient connection and understanding.

You are your cat's possession, you're there to do what it wants you to do, not the opposite. You're the one who has to obey to your cat. ;) Samantha77 here is a fast learner, look at her, how smart her siamese cat is and makes her do whatever he wants. Depending on the kitty's personality... or should I say, "PURR-sonality"? ;)... it might be that she CAN see you're not feeling great and it could be her feline way of attending to you.

A few weeks ago I had to carry some heavy things from an un-air-conditioned house to my car (which also has a broken air conditioner) in the middle of a hot, humid, sunny day. I felt sick by the time I got back to the car -- overheated (no surprise!), fatigued, short of breath, rapid heartbeat, etc. I brought said heavy things home, hauled them all from the car into my house (air-conditioned, thank goodness), and wilted onto the sofa. My cat took up residence next to me and Would Not Budge. For the rest of the day, she was no more than a few inches away.

A day or two later, it crossed my mind that I might have been dehydrated, and maybe that's why I felt so ill from the heat. So I did a little bit of research online and surprise! I wasn't just dehydrated -- I was showing all the signs of heat exhaustion, which has the potential to turn into a serious problem. It should have occurred to me that to feel out-of-breath, and with my heartbeat racing, for as long as I did was NOT normal, but I was too tired to think that clearly.

But HARMONY thought that clearly. She could tell right away that something was amiss, and she installed her little fuzzy self on the sofa next to me for the next eight hours (while I alternately napped and rested while half-asleep).

Anyhow, when you're feeling out of sorts, you might not be in the mood for kitty attention, but that doesn't mean that the CAT won't want to look after you -- especially if she can tell something's wrong. That seems to be my cat's approach to keeping an eye on me, and I suspect I'm not the only pet human on this board who's experienced that sort of feline monitoring. :)

I am owned by a cat :D He is a talking cat! He talks all the time, expecially if he is hungry. I am very doubtful about his psychic abilities though. He showes no intrest in tarot whatsoever.

When I lived in a shared house, we had 9 cats!! But it was weird, they were all members of the same family and to someone who didn't know them, it would be hard to tell which cat was which. Visitors found it creepy to have 9 almost identical cats sat around the living room staring at them.

I am definatly a cat person :D

Although, I do love dogs too. I am totally in love with my sisters 18 month old chocolate labradore retreiver. When I visit her, the dog is the first person I greet!!

My cat, Harmony is black (as was her late "sister", a cat I adopted from the animal shelter at the same time, Melody). But the only thing either of them was/is familiar with is being spoiled rotten. ;)

Harmony is well aware that the sun rises and sets on her. :) But then again, that's what kitties are for, aren't they? To give us someone fuzzy to pamper? I think so. I KNOW Harmony agrees with that sentiment. ;)

Currently we are down to one dog and 3 cats - one is 22#!

At one time we were up to 14 cats - all outdoors (we have a small farm). But that was too many (duh) and so everybody in the county got one of the kittens.

Cats are easier to take care of (as was stated above) -- but in some ways dogs are more fun. I really can't choose I guess. Wouldn't trade these Kats for anything!! The dog we inherited from our eldest son; he was too big for their appartment in Houston, so he now has the run of the farm. We've had a dog most all our married life.

I always thought I was more of a cat person ( I have three cats right now) but I have to say my deepest attachment to any animal was to my Newfie-mix dog. He adopted me - originally lived down the street, where he was very unhappy because nobody was ever home. I, on the other hand, worked at home, often read or gardened in the yard, and he became my best, most devoted friend.

I fully expect to meet him at the bridge to the World of Spirits....in our tradition, if we've been good to our dogs, they hold the bridge steady as we cross.

This might be a minor hijack of the thread, but you just reminded me of the story that's shared frequently on Usenet newsgroups among people who've recently been bereaved of their beloved family pet. On the site http://petloss.com is a story of the "Rainbow Bridge", which depicts how our cherished furry (or feathered, scaled, etc) family members are now young and healthy again, and are awaiting our arrival when we pass on.

I can easily believe that, since I believe that life NEVER ends and neither does love.

From the posts in this thread, I think that a lot of people here are going to cause a veritable stampede of wagging, purring family members welcoming us once we've departed this life. :)

I havn't had a chance to rea thru all the replies yet-b/c that might take a few centuries lol. But for me I am partial to Canines .

I love all animals but ever since I was a baby i've loved dogs. They are faithful, loyal, fun to train, intelligent, great companions. I also find dogs to be psychically aware and are very tuned into the other side. Not saying Cats aren't I think they are also. But they don't usually go out o their way to help their owners (altho some do) There are many stories of supernatural canines as well.

With that said, I also have a connection to cats-if I like it or not- My spirit Guide is a Shapeshifter-He mostly takes the form of a black panther or Jaguare. He has many Cat-like qualities (not physically) Those traits are also passed to me. I act very cat-like b/c of this. For example, I can not for the life of me stare-or look someone in th eyes. People think I'm either being rude, shy or am lying about something...And we know Cats don't like being stared at..as far as I know-or have read . I also constanly find myself with cat-like reflexes- like, I will be able to not see something flying towards me...yet my hand always goes up and bats it away..and I also Have other things but they are pretty odd anyways. In my dreams I will shapeshift and follow my guide around as a panther. It's really fun . But My other animal guides also give me diff qualities to balance me out haha.

I guess I love dogs b/c I also have a wolf guide...which helps psychically in his teachings for me.

Although I like dogs as well, I am a cat person at heart.

Tarot and cats do go together well.

After all, while a cat will sit on your feet or lap and yawn resignedly while you do a reading, a dog is more likely to jump up on you, slobber over the deck, muck up your spread and steal the five of cups. :(

That said, my cat Figgy has been known to jump on the table, sit on a spread I've laid out and miaow piteously. Figgy isn't the stereotypical, black, tarot reader's cat, though. He's more of a mottled, dirty grey with black markings. We seem to go well together.

Cats also work wonderfully as tiny heaters to keep your lap warm in the small hours of the night when you're staring blankly at tarot cards. They run on very little fuel, making them cost-efficient for tarotists who spend all their money on new and beautiful decks. :joke:

Does anyone else here have a cat as their 'totem animal'?

Cats are said to be strong protectors, independent and self-assured, searching for hidden information, seeing spirits, They are clever, mysterious, hunters, independent and self assured. Black cats are especially lucky. Black cats are said to be bad luck because the Medieval Church reviled them because of their pagan associations (they were the totem animals of the Love Goddess).

Raeven- I have my shapeshifter guide as a black panther-which is a cat pretty much lol. I also had a spottoed jaguare with me for a while to balance out the black panther. She's gone now though. I don't have a domesticated cat as a guide. My oerminent animals are
(brackets are their names)
Whale (Orca-yes an orca whale-original eh?)
Horse(Shylie)
Wolf
The Fairy
Jaguars
Hawk
and Orangutan. others I have am not sure if they are here to stay or not yet. The ones with names I know b/c I had astral travels with them and talked with them. I used to think the Horse was a male..she was very polite in telling me otherwise lol.

My guiding animals are a cat and a wolf. The cat is only half-domesticated, more than a little wild. There has also been a unicorn, a raven, a snake, a lion and an owl but they come and go.

I'll have to show this to Harmony (my black cat) for sure. :)

Actually, there's only one time when black cats crossing my path was a problem. I was on crutches due to a knee injury, and my two cats, who were both black, did NOT like what they saw. Harmony and her late sister, Melody, were VERY unhappy at the sight of me limping around. It did NOT sit well with them that the Alpha Cat in our little clowder was obviously injured.
So when they saw me trying to navigate on the stairs, they both decided to assist. Their kitty version of help involved twining around my feet and the crutches in little figure-8s.

This, of course, merely added to the challenge of getting safely down the stairs. I tried to explain to them that we were all going to end up in a heap at the bottom of the steps, but they weren't buying it. They took a few days before they trusted me to haul myself up/down the stairs on my own. :)

But that was the only time when having black cats crossing my path was an issue -- when they felt the need to micromanage my attempts to get around on crutches. ;)

Oh dear, I can imagine what that must have been like. My cats often try to catch my attention by jumping in front of my feet when it is least convenient, for example have a tray in my hands and can't see them. And they are very annoyed when I can't avoid colliding with them !

Most definitely cats. Though in our home, we have 2 cats, 3 dogs and an assortment of fish. (The cats view the tank as the gourmet food channel and watch it intently!)

Anyway, i think cats naturally are more mystical or magical. Its in thier gaceful movements, and soundless way they come sauntering into a room, the way they look so intelligent when they turn their head to the side. Their cleanliness & independance. Self assuredness. Or perhaps its their sence of being so perceptive. They always seem to know when something is up.

If i dont feel good, my cat Lucy curls up ont he couch with me and lays on my stomache like a wamr little purring heating pad. If i have a headache or am feeling blue, she snuggles near my chest and lets me use her for a teddy bear. And if soem one is comming to the door, i know before they even get there, because she alerts me.

Dogs...(ours anyway) are just to high maintenace, and not very bright. They bark at thier own shadows. Dig up the yard, and pooh every where outside.

In the words of Sassy from Homeward bound...."Cats rule. Dogs drool."

I do love all animals but I absolutely prefer cats. I have two and they are family 100%. I grew up with dogs and loved them very much but dogs are just too much work - out to poo poo, fleas, heartworm, that "gland" filling up problem :-o ewww! My cats never go out so there are never fleas, never worries about nasty parasites, etc.
Dogs are blindly loyal, which can be endearing, but can also be heart rending when you see someone with a dog that they abuse yet it still begs for their love.
I respect cats so much because a cat would NEVER do that - really, you don't so much "own" a cat as you are mutual companions and friends. If a friend started to treat you like crap you'd not be friends long and that's just how cats are. I think it's one of the reasons why very few people sit on the fence about cats (either love em or hate em) because cats are an aweful lot like US.

My late cat, Melody, was another purring heating pad. Melody was a cat who loved physical contact, and if I was sitting or lying down, there she'd be. On my lap if I was seated, on my tummy or side or back if I was streched out on the sofa (depending on which part of me was facing up, lol), there she'd be.

A few years ago, I was getting some soreness and discomfort in my lower back. If I lay down on my stomach, Melody would UNFAILINGLY curl up right on the sore area of my lower back and purr away, a little furry heating pad with a motor installed.

I was fascinated by this ability of hers to pick out the aching area, and mentioned it to the trainer at the gym I belonged to at the time. He said that sometimes, our sore areas are a different temperature than the muscles in the surrounding area (I'm not sure if he meant warmer or cooler). Cats can feel this and sometimes they target that spot. Which is fascinating to me for a different reason, but fascinating nonetheless.

Whatever it was -- her sixth sense or her ability to detect small differences in temperature to an extent that most humans probably couldn't match -- it sure worked. Melody's Purring Heating Pad duty definitely helped my back feel better. :)

but it seems cats are the most popular..

but I don't like cats very much...

I like birds though.

I'm editing this because I should really tell you about the cat we did have once.

I found it as a kitten, thrown out with the rubbish at work. We heard a mewing coming from the Skip and found 4 kittens abandoned.

I brought one home, it was pure black with green eyes and we took care of it. I didn't realised until I brought it home, it was Oct 31st, Hallow'een and I had a black cat! We called it Skip because thats where we found it. He stayed for a few years, but one day, my brother and his family came to stay for a holiday and the cat went out. We never saw him again, we searched and searched but I think he only stayed as long as he wanted to.

I prefer cats over dogs, definitely. Dogs can be good pets, too, but they are a little too needy and messy and unruly for my taste.

But I don't have any pets currently, and I really want to keep it that way. :)

It is interesting how folks here seem to overwhelmingly prefer cats . . .

Just look at my avatar, so you know what I am ;) currently I share my home with only 3 cats (poor Adi died in April, he was the one who could pick tarot cards) but they all love tarot cards (seems to give them a special feeling to sprawl on them but I don't like scratches and bends on my card).

Funny, last week I visited a friend of mine who just got a Galgo (Spanish wind hound). The doggy is 6 months old, black with a tiny bit of white and loved trying to chew off my silver rings, it stayed by my side the whole evening when I did my readings. Maybe there is still a dog lover in me?

Life without cards and cats is no life!

Yes, I do think cats are highly sensitive. My cat loves to interrupt tarot readings. She moves the cards around on the table if I am not there.

If I try to meditate she comes up immediately and wants to sit on my lap. There is something about calm energy which attracts cats.

I don't think the doggy mind is up to tarot; cats almost could read... (I'm not entirely kidding...) - so I'd expect them to appeal more to tarotists.

I haven't read through ALL the posts on this thread and, maybe you have a cat by now, but did you know allergies to pets often disappear as the allergic one spends more time with them. They build up an immunity of sorts.

Dogs are all very well, and have their place in the scheme of things, I'm sure. In speaking of cats and Tarot however, we move to a completely different echelon of thought and spiritual experience! Secretly it has been known for ages the role that cats play in tarot (and is upheld by the overwhelming results of this poll). Aside from the supportive role that cats play with their human/reader, there is also the highly symbiotic relationship that exists between the cards, the cat, and the reader. The presence of all three in close proximity is necessary for reliable readings. Indeed, without a feline nearby, tarot reading is essentially crippled. Most tarotists with a cat or cats take the effect for granted, but those who do not have the good fortune to live with a cat are left with confusing and questionable tarot readings, or must rely upon the effects of strays passing nearby or a visiting cat to enhance their divinations. Unfortunately this will render readings eratic and uncertain. The feline effect is not fully understood yet by scientists, but undoubtedly has a connection to the spritual attuning of the cat in residence and the vibrations it sends forth, as well as the cat's well-known and long-recognised ability to focus and direct incoming spiritual energies, centred in the animal's pituitary gland. Multiple cats can of course multiply the effect, peaking at around 21 animals, at which point the reader has a clarity and accuracy that surpasses 100%. Woe betide the tarot reader who ignores or abuses her feline spiritual focus, for her readings will be as ashes, in value and taste! Happy and sharply accurate the reader who appreciates her animal companion, caressing it and giving it treats; she shall be as a prophet in her town! With cats in sychronous vibration with the tarot reader, the readings are clear and the fortunes are bright! But with nary a cat, the reader is doomed in tarot, and the readings will fail. Naught left to do but walk the dog, for all the good that poor animal can do in tarot. If you would a serious tarot reader be, get a cat!

I've had both cats and dogs in my life. The dogs have taken me through the early part of my life and in these last 20 years or so I have been a cat owner. I have 3, and as another member has stated, they tend to find me. In fact all the pets I have ever had have been strays that suddenly appeared at my door step. It seems to me that cats appear to be low maintance but the girls seem somewhat more emotionally demanding or maybe I just created a furry frankenstein with the one girl I have. The boys seem a little more easy- going. Anyway, I love them all!
