View Full Version : Death year
Hi,
I am in a Hanged Man year. I am learning my lesson.
Next to come, if I remember my cards properly, will be a Death year.
A bit scared about this one.
Could you tell me how you've made it thru your Death year? Did you take a divorce? Resign from boring job and start travelling all around the world? Quit smoking and became a sports addict?
What kind of revolution/crise happened during your Death year??
Thanks in advance for sharing,
Kissa
from Mary K.Greer "Tarot for Your Self":
"you year card": add the month and date of your birth to the current year. Example: October 14, 2011 = 10 + 14 + 2011 = 2036. 2 + 0 + 3 + 6 = 11 (Wheel of Fortune). In determining the year card, you always keep the highest number under 23 (remember 22 = the Fool). (...)
There are two ways to establish when this "year" begins: 1) january 1st of this year; or 2) on your birthday in this year. In either case you are dealing with a 12-month period.

I'm having a death year. During this year (so far) Igot fired from a job that I hated, discovered that what I was studying in college wasn't for me and I quit, moved out of my parent's house, changed my sexual orientation and more or less embarked on a journey of self discovery. Its as though nothing that I thought was stable still is. Nothing is the same and its only March!!! Still, Death years are good ones to clear all the old debris away, especially since I had been avoiding this one for awhile now. Strange to say, all the choices I made were after a reading, a very powerful reading

hmmm....I've just been trying to determine when it was the last time that I had a death year....apparently, in 1991....when my father died. I also graduated from 8th grade that year, started high school. I can't really remember that much of it, since it was so far ago. I was thinking it might have been in 2002 when I left my abusive husband, divorced him, and all that good stuff, but that was actually a Strength year for me. Do the cards have to be so damned literal? *sighs*

Last year was a Death year for me. It was a bit of a tumultuous year in some aspects, but in the end, I guess it has been more of an inner transformation for me than anything else. No major changes in my day-to-day life, but definitely changes in my outlook on life.

In the Osho Zen Tarot this card is called Transformation.
I quote:"
...This is a time for a deep let-go'.. Allow any pain, sorrow, or difficulty just to be there, accepting its 'facticity'....Transformation comes, like death, in its own time. And like death, it takes you from one dimension into another."
unquote.

The interpretation of this card is one of the best I had encountered for it.
Kissa: There are as many different ways to calculate the year you're in, that there are tarologues who have written about it.
If they are all different, does this mean that they're all wrong? No, it means they're all right. Because we carry the Tarot within us and it is at our disposal to be used however and whenever we wish.
Do not limit yourself by any verdict, made by any tarologue.
Which doesn't mean that some years are not more influenced than others by certain aspects and certain archetypes.
If you want to accept Mary Greer's interpretation (although no-where have I read her explanation of how she reached her conclusion about soul, personality, and year cards.....), then use the Death card to your advantage. Death is a skeleton. Which means you have the most wonderful opportunity to get to the ESSENCE of things. You will be handed on a plate the chance to strip away all the unnecessary things in your life, and just retain the essential.
It could also point to certain aspects of your health which you could concentrate on more fully, in order to be as healthy as possible. Skeletons need to look after their bones, and especially their vertebral column. Exercices, or regular check-ups at an osteopath could be beneficial.
There are hands and feet growing in the ground of this card. If you want something to grow, you need to tend to it. You need to water the ground, remove the weeds, and cut off the dead heads. So you will need to tend to your own inner garden.
Any year is a wonderful year... if you make it so.
And don't forget, that according to other very wise tarologues, this may not be the Death year.
Kissa: Depending upon how the numbers of your birth month, birth day & current year or as of the last birthday add up, a 13-Death Year may not necessarily follow a 12-Hanged Man Year. The years do not follow strictly in sequence & it would be either 4-The Emperor or 13-Death.
For example, my Death Year was in 2001. 2002 was followed by 5-The Hierophant, not 14-Temperance.
During my Death Year, I lost family & friends to illness.
Household appliances wore out/died: toaster, microwave oven, vacuum cleaner, laundry dryer. The car. PC crashed a second time & required major repair & replacement of parts. In reaction, we started working on the house in earnest for fear something else would go. Not done yet as working on house is a slow process due to other life happenings.
We also decided to put our money where our mouths are & to make the time & opportunity to see distant family & friends more than during weddings & funerals. Life is too short & waiting until "things are better" can be a wait until eternity.

So, if I get a 15 birth year, in 2004, does this denote that I am in the Lover's year or the Devil's year?
And was the Death year experienced in 2002 - since the numbers added to 13 - or was that year the Emperor's year?
And how does one decide to use a single digit, by adding the two numbers together, i.e. 13 makes 4, etc....., rather than go all the way to 10-22 ( number of major arcana cards )...?
Feebie: Any Major Arcana number that results from the addition of the birth date & year numbers is not reduced; hence, 15 would be retained.
To further explain using my birth date of February 26 as an example: as of February, 2001 Death ended a cycle of years. A new cycle began in 2002 with 5-The Hierophant; followed by 2003 & 6-The Lovers; 2004 as 7-The Chariot.
A Devil Year is not necessarily a bad year; neither is a Death Year. It all depends on the perspective, & 'tis important to maintain a perspective in order to also maintain one's balance. The outer events oft serve as an impetus for thought or inner reflection; to propel one to change things; to act appropriately for the greater good of self &/or for others.
In a Devil Year, one may discover exactly what it is that holds one back from progress &/or find the means to break free of restrictions. Such as thinking outside of the box; having fun. It could entail taking the bull (goat) by the "horns".
The Death Year I experienced was not boring; certainly thought-provoking. Aside from the sorrow over the loss of loved ones, the material losses paled in contrast. Though in their way stressful, more of inconveniences as material losses are not the end of the world.

Thank you. I think this makes a lot more sense.
I need to re-evaluate my expectations accordingly though, because while I thought I am in the Lover's year, I just learned that I am in the Devil's year.
According to C.G. Jung,
This card shows the opportunity of changing one's ways and recognizing the sums of unlived possibilites , our mistakes ( where something is missing ), our guilt, and everything that is unheard of within us in our shadow.*
So, it should be a challengingly exciting year to say the least. :smoker:

Yes, we'd appreciate it if someone explained to us slowly how one gets this year card. Thanks.
Add the numbers of your birthday together.
For example, if your birthday is January 18, 1976 you would add :
1 + 1 + 8 + 7 + 6 = 25 = 7
You were born in a seven year.
Your birthday this year would be 1-18-04
1 + 1 + 8 + 0 + 4 = 14 = 5
Then, I'd recommend they check out cards 14 and 5 for more on what to expect in the coming year ;)
Hi Kittaine and Ivy Rhiannon,
you can check the first message of this thread where i copied in italic the original text from Mary K. Greer's Tarot for Your Self.
I bet there are other old threads on the Year Card too if you do a search with "yeard card" as keywords.
Hopes this helps, along with Alissa's message.
Kissa
PS: Ivy, why the hell you think you are a nuisance asking questions????!!! Come on, this is a forum, we're here to learn so you'd better ask questions, girl!!! ;) I will personally check regularly to make sure you ask some questions :D ...

this is cool! ty guys. s
o let me get this straight my b day is 09-19-1983 so my birth number is 4. and relates to the emperior so I would decifer it as my personality.
then my b-day number this year is a 7 so my card this year is the chariot right? and i would decifer this as what is to expect this year?
let me know if I am on the right track!

Ok now I'm confused. The way I learned it, you use ALL of numbers of the current year, not just the last two, to determine your current year card.
2004
+*08
+*01
=2013=2+0+1+3=6
Which is still yet to be, since it's not August yet. So I'm still getting stuck in tradition and learning and the ways of man...just trying to figure this all out.
If I do it Alissa's way, dropping the 20 of 2004, I'd have a death year also. From something else I ran across, this would be referring to, not to my current year card, but sort of where my head was at right now. Lots of changes, transformations, new ideas and prospects, shedding old skin and habits, a whole lot of flux. It would be quite accurate too.
Ivy Rhiannon: 4-The Emperor is both your Personality & Soul Card. 13-Death the Shadow Card.
Your current Year Card is 6-The Lovers, with next ensuing on the next birthday as 7-The Chariot.
The past year has been focussed on relationships & choices; also communications. Could involve increased social activities.
The next year could see ye implementing at least some of the decisions of the year at present. Hence, if ye were considering a change of job, the opportunity to do so may arise nigh or within the next birthday.
WalesWoman: The method of using the entire birthdate based on Angeles Arrien's & Mary K. Greer's method.
The method Alissa is using I recall Umbrae mentioning some time ago, but do not recall the thread.
In terms of numerology, it all depends on which "system" ye prefer.
Ok...so depending on which method I use, I could be in 10, 11, 12, or 13!
Ok, well, my birthday's on October 22. If I add them the way I first learned (1+0+2+2+2+0+0+5) I get 12 (if I start from my birthday) and 13 (if I start from January 1st). If I do it the other way I know (1+0+2+2+0+5) I get 10 (from my birthday) or 11 (from January 1st)!
Any opinions on which method's better?! It makes quite a difference!
Thanks!
Lindsay
