How do I make an image small enough to post it as an attatchment? I'm completely thick with things like this.

images must be of a certain filetype, gif jpg png txt zip bmp jpeg pdf, but thats never a problem.
they cant be bigger than 302400 bytes.
and here is your problem i guess, they cannot exceed the height and width sizes: 300 width 400 height , and those are pixels.

I usually open the image in 'Paint' then use the 'stretch skew' to change the size. I then check in 'attributes' till the width and height is 40 and that seems to work.

Making the height and width 40 pixels is only good if you want the image to be avatar size. Also stretching and skewing only works to a certain resolution, for instance if you have a massive attachment and want to make it a lot smaller you can 'lose' the picture if you make it a lot smaller. Its trial and error, I think.
