I thought this would make a good resource thread or a good trivia thread. What do the various "out of print" tarot decks fetch on ebay on average?

for example:

- Rock 'N Roll Tarot (Second Edition)
- Hermetic Tarot (Dowson)
- Greenwood Tarot
- Norse Tarot
- Hoi Polloi Tarot
- Shakespeare Tarot (Novicki)
- Servants of the Light
- Pomo Tarot (Williams)
- Alchemical Tarot (Robert Place/Rosemary Ellen Guiley)

- Jungian Tarot (Wang) - old edition - before the new edition came out
- Jungian Tarot (Wang) - old edition - now that the new edition has come out

I have seen the Miracle Tarot go on ebay for around $70 US (alas!)

For Hoi Polloi, I've won the deck for 13.00 or so, once all 78 cards, once with booklet and box.

I've seen the Shakespherean by Norwicki go for 25.00 to 40.00, I think, and twice in two years at used bookstores. I think I paid about 15.00 and saw it also for about 25.00 in another state.

I don't know about the average going price, but I recently won the Hermetic, in excellent condition, for around $60.00.

For the Hermetic (Dowson): 2 years ago about 50 to 60 dollars...

The most recent auction on ebay that I looked at which was a couple months ago was over $100 for it. I also want to say that I saw somewhere it was going for $180. ::sigh:: I should have got it when it was $50... ::smacking self:::

I've emailed US games 2 years ago and asked if they were going to reprint the Hermetic and they replied that they might in a couple years and were interested on how much it went for on Ebay. I emailed them again over a year ago on the status but never received a reply. :(

I'll just have to keep dreaming that they'll reprint it!!! hehe :)

The Servants of the Light went for $149 last year, and the last three Greenwoods were all $125 or higher. There's one on ebay now, which is only at $81 but there's 3 more days to go on it.

The Vertigo decks never sell for less than $75/$80. They usually top $100 also.

Ditto for the Nightmare Before Christmas deck, highly collectible & never under $80.

Servants of the Light went for £95 on eBayUK this month. I've seen several copies of the Shakespearian recently and they go for between £20-30. The last Norse I saw went for under £30 and the PoMo goes for £20-30. The Alchemical went for a Buy-it-Now of £24 last week and another copy of the deck went for £23 - I'm still cursing over that one as they both went to the same person and I was trying to win one!

Is the Alchemical really an OOP deck? Going back about a year my husband bought it for me for £10 in a half price book store. At the time you could buy it anywhere. I saw loads of them. I had no idea it would become sought after!

There's a Hoi Polloi tarot on ebay at the moment - the current bid is $31 and there are 4 days to go so I'm sure it'll go much higher.
Abe books had a copy of the Hoi Polloi a couple of months ago for about $30

I keep track of favorite OOP deck prices on Ebay, but only two of the decks you mention are among the ones I track, the Hoi Polloi and the PoMo. For those, I have the following numbers:

Hoi Polloi - average $20.35, high $41.00, low $6.50, went unsold once, reason unexplained. Nobody watching? :-)

PoMo - average $21.27, high $38.96, low 10.00, went unsold once due to high reserve.

I think I got mine for £60, which is around $90. It was for the first edition, as well.. I think they tend to go for more as the cardstock is better and the cards are I believe larger?

Yeah.. I remember them regularly being a featured item at Bargain Books (?) - I'm not sure of the name, but they're a chain of bargain bookstores around the UK. I seem to remember their logo is blue and yellow, and might have an owl on it.

I didn't get it then as I didn't particularly like the artwork, but if the Alchemical is now gaining in status as an OOP deck, then I'll be kicking myself for not buying 10 of them and then auctioning them on ebay...

I bought an Alchemical for £10 and a Tarot of the Cloisters for £6 locally in a shop in Winchester. I also have Royal Fez Moroccan which I got from e-bay for a fiver. I only bought them because they were supposedly cheap. The Alchemical, I will look at one day because it does appeal to me but the others I just never get round to spending time on them. Never could resist a bargain! :D

Cloisters, Tapestry, and I Ching Tarot all in piles at my local Half Price books.

The Tarot of the Cloisters is OOP? Well I am not e-bay, but I have a copy up for sale in the trading tarot forum for USD $10 if anyone is interested. The box has very minimal shelfware, and the deck itself is like new.

Alchemical Tarot is still available in shops here for £10 ($18 US) and Servants of light is on ebay (UK) at the moment for £2.20 ($4 US) with 3 days to go.

That Greenwood auction closed yesterday afternoon at around $150US. Curiously the final bid was in hours before the end. I guess everyone decided the price was too steep and backed away. I gave up when it went over $100US so was just watching.

No one's mentioned the Amber yet. One went for 131 € last month on ebay France, and there's another up right now, currently at 45,50€ (reserve not met, more than 6 days to go).

I think the last one on ebay US went for nearly 400$, but Dark_angel would know more about that :D

Servants of light is on ebay (UK) at the moment for £2.20 ($4 US) with 3 days to go.

Moonbow, I think this is just the guide book to Servants of the Light Tarot not the actual deck itself.

Unfortunately even though SoulWorkings shows the tarot decks, they don't sell them, it's an info only site with no store (you get sent directly to Amazon where you're told it's out of print). When I went to the list of stores on their site, Azure Green's URL wouldn't connect, The Crystal Ball (a shop here in our city) is gems & minerals mostly and doesn't carry tarot, and the rest only sell soaps, herbs & incense. So the Greenwood is likely shown as a 'suggested deck' only. It can't be purchased there.

Pagan X

Shoot. I tried to vet all the results I got from Google for "Amazon redirects". Will edit.

Which gets pretty annoying after a while.

Azure Green is also Abyss Distribution, and I know they're still in business, but I too have run into bad AG links.

Here is their updates page, looks like they are getting out of bumper stickers:

http://www.azuregreen.com/update.html

Greenwood Tarot is not listed on their current site.

HudsonGray
05-05-2004, 15:45
You know, now that you mentioned it, Azure Green has had some online connection problems lately (Xmas time for sure). I know they carry a ton of stuff, the downside is that they're like WalMart, they ONLY buy in huge quantities, so you won't see small merchants or self published decks available through them.

Some good discount sales occasionally, though.

I put an email to ylana.com, asking about their deck. With luck they might have the Greenwood. There's still a chance they haven't updated their site in 2 or 3 years & don't really have it. But if they do, it'd be wonderful. Especially at that price!

Here is a list of OOP decks and books. Do not rely on this alone to either charge $200 or pay $200 for a deck! Decks go in and out of print, books and their decks get out of synch in terms of supply.

Norse Tarot
Out of Print ~ Limited Availability
Cards & book edition (September 1997)

not so long ago, i read here than Clive Barrett informed on his website (whose address i don't remember) that the deck is going to be republished this year.

Sorry, that's all i can get thru right now (kids' emergency).

I think it is worth checking on tarotworld, alidastore and tarotgarden before going to bid on eBay for OOP listed decks that are easily available when you know the right place.

Osho Zen in french (really OOP and very hard to find) is available from one place in Belgium for... 131€. Can you believe it???? That deck is everywhere in english for 25€!!! I asked the guy "are you sure you wrote the right price?" he answered "this one is for ppl who REALLY want the deck". So that's it? Unless you are willing to pay a non sense amount of money for mass produced cards available everywhere but in another language (from german to finnish!) you are not committed enough to tarot???? My! If you think like this, why don't ppl from tarot garden or alidastore apply crazy prices on all their "hard to find" decks??? They would be millionaires by now?!

My rambling of the day ;)

Thanks guys, that is very interesting. Helps to have that sort of comparison.
I PMd Kiama to tell her that the Norse might be available since one of her house-mates was searching for it. There seems (and in cyberland who knows for sure) at least one place that sells it directly. Even better if it was re-printed then we could all have a copy easily and less expensively.

The Terrestrial is still around, I got a 'new' deck last year for $8 at the used bookstore. They had several still in cellopane. It comes up regularly over on eBay for not too much money (under $15).

you can still get the Buckland Romani Deck off amazon for about $20 ish. I bought two!

Pagan X

Keep in mind that there are three ways to sell Tarot decks and books:

*The deck
*The book
*The set

Some of the listed items are books, some decks, some sets. The Halloween Tarot, for example, is OOP because they aren't making it anymore and Amazon is out. Single decks are available at some sites, I bought the book in a store, couldn't find the set anywhere (but didn't knock myself out trying.)

If Amazon/ B&K are out, and Tarot Garden is out, it doesn't mean that eBay is the sole recourse. Many small shops all over the world will have decks on their shelves, so it's worth doing some phone calling in your local area. They turn up used or remaindered in some strange places too.

There are also web sites put up by physical shops that are not what you call *optimized* for Googling.

I found the most useful searches in Google for finding those "non-Amazon" vendors was:

"deck name" price -Amazon -review

or

"deck name" -Amazon -review

I can vouch for this one being VHTF. Tarot Garden occasionally gets a copy in; I got mine from them on eBay. Expect to pay $$$.

I didn't see the Knapp-Hall Tarot on Pagan X's list; it's also out of print. I had a hard time tracking down a copy, but I eventually found it for about $35, and I've since seen it show up used on Amazon.com for less. I do eventually want a copy of the original Knapp Tarot, though, and that also goes for $$$.

This rare, original Knapp/Hall Tarot deck was designed and produced by Manley P. Hall but the actual artwork was done by J. Augustus Knapp who earlier had done the illustrations for Mr. Hall’s "big book", Secret Teachings of All Ages. At the time, following the instructions of Hall, Knapp painted the illustrations of the major arcana of the Tarot which appears on page 129 of the "big book". He became interested in the tarot cards and asked Hall to collaborate with him in the preparation of the Knapp/Hall Tarot deck. J. Augustus Knapp was born in Cincinnati in 1852. After graduation from a leading art group, he taught in the Cincinnati Art School. While in Cincinnati he was hired by John Uri Lloyd, head of a nationally known pharmaceutical house, to make the illustrations for his famous book, ETIDORHPA (Aphrodite spelled backwards). As an illustrator, Mr. Knapp was especially successful in handling symbolic material. He was able to capture the spirit of ancient and medieval emblems and figures so that he was qualified to illustrate the works of Hall. This rare Knapp/Hall Tarot Deck (New Tarot Art Cards) was copyrighted in 1929 and is in excellent to mint condition in the original two-piece, slip top box plus original booklet written by Hall. Manly P. Hall was the President/Founder in 1934 of the Philosophical Research Society. In over 50 years of public activity Hall is credited with having delivered more than 7,000 lectures in the U.S. and abroad, and he authored countless books, essays and articles. After publication of the deck, Hall’s relationship with Knapp was sporadic and eventually they lost contact with each other.
An interesting and sad sidebar to Knapp was revealed by a neighbor in correspondence to U.S. Games Systems about twenty years ago. It appears that the Knapps found themselves in financial difficulties. Apparently, sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s, the neighbor relates that California had a provision that if you owned your home, but were otherwise destitute, the house could be deeded to the state and you could live in it and be supported until death. Their residence was in the Palms area of West Los Angeles. Mrs. Knapp is believed to have been a retired M.D. from Cincinnati. The Knapps had no children and no heirs. The neighbor believed that the Knapps elected to take advantage of the California law. As an added feature to this offering , we have located an original copy of the booklet, "The Tarot Cards in Divination" by J. Knapp, 32pp, Second Edition, copyright 1936, and we will include this booklet as part of the auction for the deck.

Well, I have been hunting for an Alchemical Tarot deck, but fruitlessly so far (wish I had known you a year ago, Moonbow!!!)

I bid on one last week at eBay but dropped out at $50 and it finally sold for $103.49. I even emailed Bob Place to see if there were any plans to republish and he said he was trying to get it back in print but without result so far.

Blackwell's UK has a US web presence and said they could get it for me but then emailed me today and said "so sorry, no go.........."

So the search goes on..............

One of the members here found one in a little shop in England and picked it up for me. I in turn sent her a Golden Tarot by Kat Black.

I had met Robert Place at the Reader's Studio in NYC (which I highly reccomend) and he did a comparitive reading using his Alchemical and his Budda Tarots. I realized then how much I loved his work!

I still have the Angels Tarot on my wish list. I don't feel too much for the Tarot of the Saints. Probably because I was not raised Christian and am not familiar with them.

Good luck on your search!

Mimi

HudsonGray, one of those is me bidding at eBay, nice that is staying low for the moment. I am sure I will have to drop out soon when the bidding gets too rich for my blood, but for now I can dream............... :o)

Mimi, I know what you mean about The Tarot of the Saints, I am not as hot on that as Place's others but I am rounding out my Place collection while I search for his Alchemical Tarot. The Buddha is rather interesting, so different........... Have you seen his drawings for the next one, the Tarot of the Sevenfold Mysteries?? Absolutely spectacular, I will be waiting at the door when that one is done!!

[Edit: forgot to mention that I did go to Ylana's site and order an Alchemical from there, but, based on my experience with Blackwell's I will not assume I have that one til I have it in my hot little hands. I have also put in a pre-order at Amazon in case a used one shows up there and a request at Half too. Just watch, I will end up with three at once!!]

Yes, I loved the Star and the World! I will be right there with you when it comes out!

I know he presented them to Barbara Moore from Lewellyn at the Reader's Studio, and she said she would present it to her 'higher ups' and see what happens.

He was selling prints at the Reader's Studio, but I was low on cash :( or I would have gotten the Star and World prints.

Do you have the Angel Tarot? what do you think of it?

Hey, Mim.......... you must be lurking online like I am; supposed to be doing web work but I am feeling lazy..........

Place is selling prints of many of his cards on his web site for just $20 apiece (hope my memory is right, it wasn't much in any event) so you could get some there when your piggy bank gets squeezable again.

Angels: on my list for purchase but I have recently discovered Silvana Alasia's gorgeous Egyptian decks and want to gather those up first. Now if only my lottery ship would come in......

I looked through this list carefully, but of course I could have missed it. Is the Royal Fez Moroccan OOP? I ask because I was back in my former home of Halifax earlier this week and picked it up in my formly-fav store. But I have never seen it anywhere else. (There was only the one copy) A very quick web check suggests not readily available.
Anyone know?

Yes, it's out of print, but not high in price yet. There was some talk last year when someone saw one going for over $60 on eBay and couldn't understand why because a few stores still had the deck at normal prices.

Call around, I'm sure you can find it either at half price bookstores or at new age stores that stock a lot of decks.

Who would have thought? They are quite cute, maybe I should read some of the books.

The elusive search for the Alchemical. ;)

Twice I had a chance to buy it from Wal-Mart.com. The first time I couldn't afford it and then when I went back to the site when I had the money it was sold. I signed up for email notification if they got another copy. Not even a month later I received an email saying they had it.
I procrastinate with everything. I decided that there were a few other things I would buy from the Wal-Mart site, by the time I had my shopping cart ready (I took a week) it was gone. This happened this year and the copy Wal-Mart had was around $32.00.
I'm positive this deck can be found for a reasonable price. (I hope!!!) :)

Does anyone have any information about The William Blake tarot? The only place I can find it is abebooks but it's over $100!!!

Hi all. The above quote refers to the MerryDay Tarot deck.

It's true that this deck is not OOP, and in fact it is still very easy to get this deck directly from the publisher by visiting the website www.merrydaytarot.com.

In fact, it just so happens that this publishing team lives in my own home town, and I stopped by his place today to pick up a deck for a friend. Mr. McCabe is a very nice man, and is actually interested in finding a way to better market this deck. He is good friends with the artist, and together they believe in their vision of these cards.

Anyway, just wanted to get that word out that this deck is not only NOT OOP, but fairly easy to obtain through the deck's website.

Blessings,
Karen

And Tarot Garden has it listed as offline inventory. Wonder how much she charges?

The Mystic Eye's pages haven't been updated in quite a while, some of their stuff is really old.

For what it's worth -- AGM's website is out-of-date. Unless the info I've received from AGM is incorrect, the Royal Fez is now OOP, and there doesn't currently seem to be any plans to reprint it. We had managed to get our hands on a supply of the Royal Fez last year (indirectly) from AGM, for which we were offered a good wholesale price, which allowed us to resell the decks for US$ 15. After that supply went amazingly quickly (and now I know why), I tried to reorder, which is when we were told that the deck was no longer available -- now or in the foreseeable future.

Also, you need to keep in mind that there were earlier editions of the Royal Fez other than AGM's. A Rigel Press copy from the initial limited edition print run of 500 copies from the late 50s could well be worth $250. I can't tell from the info you posted exactly which editions were being offered, but I would agree that even out-of-print, the AGM edition isn't worth that much. But current demand and subsequent lack of supply is bound to push the price up past €15 on the present market.

Oh! Thanks Jeannette for the update! I wasn't aware of that previous highly collectable edition of the Fez deck. You must be right, the price mentioned here is certainly referring to this edition and not the AGM's. AGM website is quite frustrating but I got very good contact with a sales person, it is a pity though that a publisher doesn't realize the importance of having a nice website nowadays. I am glad Lo Scarabeo finally improved theirs.

I have found myself buying or dreaming to buy OOP decks just because they were mentioned here, just for the fun of chasing them and getting my hands on some. But even very very rare, I wouldn't hunt the Royal Fez, at east the AGM version ;)

I took my friend to see Jonny Lang on Cape Cod this weekend. We hit lotsa book stores and two metaphysical stores. I grabbed a backup Vision Quest Tarot at the first one.

At the second one, there was a much larger selection, and my heart about stopped when I leaned over to see a low shelf and found a brand new shrink wrapped Alchemical Tarot set sitting there.

My heart had just about started again when I noticed the set was selling for $32.

Guess whether I bought it or not?!

Been looking for a copy of this OOP deck for a couple of months. Found a copy on eBay by chance. Had just lost on a bid for the same deck. Bidding started at $16.50. Sought and bought for $56  for a open, but unused deck/book set. Excellent condition; it was packed with care. Came 3,000 miles right to me. The seller had thought she might explore reading, but changed her mind.
I guess the point is I couldn't assess value on an OOP deck. I spent more than a little footwork finding one. Tried ordering it with some of the local bookstores - no luck. Even spoke with the author who didn't had a copy to spare; and didn't know IF OR WHEN it might be reprinted. It probaby cost me the price of another deck... but I smile everytime I work with it! :)

I thought this would make a good resource thread or a good trivia thread. What do the various "out of print" tarot decks fetch on ebay on average?

for example:

- Rock 'N Roll Tarot (Second Edition)
- Hermetic Tarot (Dowson)
- Greenwood Tarot
- Norse Tarot
- Hoi Polloi Tarot
- Shakespeare Tarot (Novicki)
- Servants of the Light
- Pomo Tarot (Williams)
- Alchemical Tarot (Robert Place/Rosemary Ellen Guiley)

- Jungian Tarot (Wang) - old edition - before the new edition came out
- Jungian Tarot (Wang) - old edition - now that the new edition has come out

The Jungian Tarot used to fetch an easy 200 dollars before the reprint. Now it goes for around 60 dollars I think. The Servants of the Light also went down, I have seen it sell for $300 or more and now it usually goes for around $120 to $150.

POMO Tarot, NOrse Tarot, Shakespeare Tarot and Hoi Polloi Tarot you can usually get for a good price.

Last Rock and Roll Tarot second edition I saw on Ebay went for around $250 or so. The First edition fetches an easy $300 and one time even more then $1000! Crazy!

Just did a check on ebay for these, just for kicks. Here's what's going right now for those listed:

- Rock 'N Roll Tarot (Second Edition)--Starting bid $169; BIN: $250
- Hermetic Tarot (Dowson)--2 up; one is AU76; the other US$40
- Norse Tarot--is this the Clive Barrett? If so, its listed in a 6 deck lot starting at $29
- Pomo Tarot (Williams)--AU4.99
- Jungian Tarot (Wang) - old edition - before the new edition came out
- Jungian Tarot (Wang) - old edition - now that the new edition has come out[/QUOTE]--not sure about all that, but there are two with a date of 1988. One is starting at $10, the other at GBP 3.99

The Felicita Happiness Tarot from Folchi is indeed rare and expensive. But personally I think $700 is too much. I have seen the deck sell on Ebay from about $300 to $500 maximum. It depends how many bidders there were and how often it appears. It is still a lot of money of course.

Two other Folchi decks that also fetch that much and are out of print are the Tarocco Storico della Citta di Ferrara and the Carnavale de Venice Tarot.

I've seen all kinds of wild prices, especially on e-bay. I've made it a practice to only buy decks I actually like and desire; no purchasing for market speculation! That way, I won't get "stuck" with something I don't like or can't use.
In recent months, I've paid $35.00 for an Alchemical Tarot set(brand new), and $125.00 for an Hermetic Tarot deck(open, mint condition). I also got a new Knapp-Hall for $25.00, and turned down a Greenwood at $50.00.

This thread inspired me to do a search on Ebay to see what decks are going for these days. There's an Alchemical Tarot currently at $338 with over 6 days to go! (WOW!) But, it's one that was used by the artist, so it'll probably go for a lot more than that!

And there's a no name Italian deck currently at $115 with 8 days to go. It's dated from the late 1800s to early 1900s so will probably go high as well.

The Tarot of Cloisters is OOP?? Ok, now I'm smacking myself... Used to have it, gave it away. A few years ago the local Border's had a huge stack of them for $5 each! Gonna have to start keeping an eye out for bargain decks!

The "no name" Marseilles, mentioned is a deck published by Alessandro Viassone of Turin, circa 1890. It can be seen on page 390 of the Encyclopedia of Tarot, volume II

the seller did the homework...I found another Viassone picture scans online and compared my 1940 Viassone tax stamp and the circa late 1800 one...the dating looks to be as the seller said.

I bid a little on the ebay deck, but decided my damaged double-ended Viassone is fine. It was free with other deals that I did a few years ago, so I'm okay with its age and damage...it's a full deck.

I usually go for repros anyway.

Just caught the end of an interesting auction on eBay for a deck I'd never heard of before, the Hornsteiner Leo Tarot. It ended up going for $76 - as I've never seen this deck before, I have no idea if that was a high or low price for it. It looked like an interesting deck, though.

It's a German deck that uses Astrology along with tarot. There are twelve versions of it, one for each sign. The only difference in the versions, is the zodiac cards. I have the Cancer version, since I'm a Cancer. I've seen the Pisces, and Leo, but wouldn't mind seeing the rest.

The ONLY people who got that deck were the ones who attended the original sneak preview showing at Disneyworld (or something like that, it was a very limited run and only the people who were there to see the sneak preview of the movie got the 'freebies'). Most likely the only place you'll see them would be up on eBay as people sell them off. It was never commercially available and the run they did on it was very small. So with the deck you're not only bidding against tarot collectors, but also the Disney memorabelia collectors, which isn't fun.

Starlily, I think that Scion still has a copy or two available for trade - you might want to check out his trading thread in the Tarot Trading forum. I've seen the Alchemical go for around $50 a few times recently on eBay . . . there are a lot of copies of it out there circulating around, it's just a matter of catching it at the right time and the right price. I've even heard of someone buying it for around $40 from an Amazon marketplace seller. And I got my copy for only $2 - it was sitting on a very high shelf, all covered in dust (but still in pristine, shrinkwrapped condition) at the local Goodwill.

A freind decided that she didn't want the Norse Tarot and sent it to me, which was wonderful because I wanted it, but discovered it was out of print and going for more than I wanted to spend. So right now, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the generosity... especially because of it's value.

There are no auctions on EBay for it, so I went to Amazon.com... both US and UK sites where it ranges in prices from 44 pounds -130 UK and $87-110 US. The set I have is in a plastic box, with a well for the cards (like a VCR cover), soft cover B&W illustrated book and printed by Aquarian Press 1989, ISBN 0-85030-792-9. I've seen this deck printed or published by atleast three different places. Some advertise as hardbound books, some soft cover, I've also heard that it was packaged in a cardboard box as well.

So how do I tell what the value of this deck is? Not that I want to sell it or anything, but... I'd to recompense my freind in someway and ....??? I feel sort of guilty in a way, because I don't know if she realized the value of this and I know she could have sold it... and definately needed the $ she could have earned from it.
Edited to add:
I just did the converstions after I saw the prices this deck is going for on Amazon.UK, Germany, France, Canada and US. OMG, I've got to send this deck back to her... it's becoming a gold mine. As far as I can tell this one was published April 27, 1989 and in fantastic condition.

WalesWoman, the Norse doesn't always sell for that much. I got my copy on eBay a few months ago for about $55. I've seen pristine copies sell on eBay for between $50-70 quite a few times, recently. That leads me to think that anyone paying over $80 for it is simply paying way too much . . .

I saw a post by PagaX way back at the begining of the post and didnt know about this shop in Melbourne. Aussie prices are reasonable on exchange rates, but I dont know the price of all the decks, but hey I'll post them anyway - it hasnt been updated since 2004! :D

WalesWoman, the Norse doesn't always sell for that much. I got my copy on eBay a few months ago for about $55. I've seen pristine copies sell on eBay for between $50-70 quite a few times, recently. That leads me to think that anyone paying over $80 for it is simply paying way too much . . .
Thanks Annabelle and Elven for letting me know. I was thinking of asking Jeanette what she thought the "going" rate for this deck would be. I can't find that it was published a year ago as hoped for and the links of the author's site don't have it listed anywhere or weren't working for me. When I did the converstions and saw what it meant in US and Australian dollars at the current rate... it blew my mind. They are "cheapest" in the US and most expensive in Germany EUR 181,78 ($227 US/ $296 Austrailain)... but I think it's the very first edition published by David Westnedge, Ltd that were going for oodles on amazon.uk. 99-131 UK range/ $315 Austrailian, This particular set I have was going on the amazon.france EUR 113,93 ($141 US/ $185 Australian). I think... the ISBN numbers all matched for a publishing date of April 27, 1989. I don't know how many publishings there were, atleast another in 1990 by US Games.
I don't think I've ever spent more than 25-30 dollars for a deck/book set... so this is simply beyond belief.

I checked out that link... it was updated on 1 September 2005 and lists this deck for $50 Australian. So I don't know why these others are so high... price gouging I guess.

Does anyone have a feel for what one should expect to pay for a German language first edition of the Margarete Petersen deck with the aubergine border if the box/deck is opened but in mint condition?

Not related to the above inquiry, I wonder why the Greenwood deck has not been reprinted. As far as I can make out, there seems to be quite a demand for it. Does anyone have any insights as to the possibility of a reprinting of Greenwood sometime in the future? It is such a lovely deck, but $200.+ is (completely) out of my league! Sigh...

See my post on the following thread (although partly written in response to a post regarding writing to USG about a reprint, it addresses the larger issue of reprinting "popular" OOP decks):

Thanks for your very illuminating response to my inquiry regarding reprinting Tarot decks, Jeanette! I simply thought that publishers were inclined to wait for the demand to be such that a reprinting would be worthwhile. While not impossible, it sounds as though the demand required is not generally enough to warrant the reprinting of any given Tarot deck. I guess that Greenwood is not likely going to be coming to live with me in the very near future. (Heavy hearted exhale...)

To be honest, I've also heard some rumors regarding other "situations" that are impeding a reprint of the Greenwood in particular -- but since I've not been able to confirm them, I won't add grist to the rumor mill by repeating them. My point being that in addition to my comments on the other thread, there could be any number of reasons why a deck never sees a reprint, beyond the perception of "financial non-feasibility" on the part of the publisher. I think perhaps it may be a bit short-sighted to assume that publishers are stupid or uninformed because a "high-demand" OOP deck isn't re-released. Unless one talks to all the parties involved -- publishers, artists, authors -- and gets detailed and honest information, it's difficult to know for sure why something falls OOP without hope of republication. There could be some other very good reasons that the "buying" public isn't aware of.

Hi weaver,

About the Petersen with burgundy borders - my own experience is that if you can find one, it will probably run in the neighborhood of 45-65 euros (which comes out to a bit more in U.S. dollars). I don't know if that's typical, though . . . but given how dearly I want the deck, I feel it is fair :). (With help from another AT member, I will be getting a copy from Europe soon!)

And about the Greenwood - $200 is out of my price range, too, but the Greenwood doesn't seem to be selling for that much these days. Mine was just under $150 (bought a couple of months ago from an Amazon marketplace seller), and I've seen copies going on eBay in recent months for $150-185, roughly. They just aren't hitting the $200 mark anymore, unless the seller is really ambitious or the buyer is unaware of the typical price and willing to drop a lot of money on it.

Thanks for the great information Annabelle4!

I am going to begin keeping an eye out for the Greenwood on both the Amazon and E Bay sites. Perhaps I'll find a reasonable deal?! The images I have seen posted from the Greenwood look so wonderful. Maybe, with diligence, I'll get lucky.

Talking of greenwoods...

Who published it?

I keep finding it listed with different publishers, ISBN's. etc.

If it's been published that many times, how can it be rare?

Jeannette
08-09-2005, 08:15
In my experience, a lot of people don't know how to read/discern the proper publisher information. Sometimes the distributor gets mistaken for the publisher. I've never seen any (correct) info indicating that anyone other than Thorson's published the Greenwood.

Oh, BTW -- just to make the distinction: the Greenwood is not rare. Many thousands of copies were published. It's simply out-of-print, and the current demand exceeds the secondary/collectors' market supply. It's supply-and-demand that's pushing up the Greenwood price, not rarity. There are any number of factors that determine market value for a particular OOP deck -- rarity is only one, and not necessarily the "deciding" factor at that. I can list any number of decks that are much rarer than the Greenwood, but that also sell for much less.

Well, I'm sure you are orrect.

Amazon however seem to think that Harper Collins and USG published it!

Ha ha to them.

U.S. Games never published the Greenwood -- and I'm sure they're probably getting very tired of inquires about when they're going to "republish" it (no criticism of your report intended, Lillie -- it just seems to be a very common misperception).

Thorson's is a HarperCollins imprint, so -- same diff.

Not to mention a Giger orginal English Baphomet deck (just like mine LOL) at $175. And an Alchemical at $100. (that should be a lot less....!)

BTW the Nightmare before Christmas one isn't a complete deck anyway - I think there are only 13X2 cards and they aren't exactly Tarot, so cheer up everyone ! (I scanned the lot on once when they were up for sale !!)The cards are sort of like the 12 days of Christmas +1 !

I couldn't agree more, particularly since I paid $50 for it through the deck locator service at Tarot Garden. . . I got mine in early August. I'd highly recommend Tarot Garden's deck locator service to anyone who is looking for an OOP deck. Jeannette is very responsive to requests, and doesn't promise anything she can't deliver. I got e-mails letting me know when she located my deck, its condition, price (including shipping and handling) and then she e-mailed me again when she had mailed it. I have seen the Hermetic go for a variety of prices.

The lowest was £26 early this year
The highest was £94 a few months later.

Mostly they seem to be somewhere between the two. Around £40/£50

I'm not sure about american prices, from the few I've followed, something similar, I would think. ($80/$100) Though I have seen far higher and lower.

Does that help?

Patience, patience! If you just wait, and wait a little longer, a Hermetic will appear for around $50 or less, and go virtually un-noticed. Then you jump on it! That last Hermetic would have gone for a lot less, but two of the bidders got into a feud with each other, and neither would back down. I try to bid a few times, and then let it go. Every deck will eventually show up again on ebay. With all the decks out there, I can out wait most, for a prized deck.

I has ask about the price of the Hermetic Tarot and got several different answers about its worth. I decided to put it on Ebay after last weeks deck went for $350. Mine did not have the LWB so I knew it would not go for that much, but it did go for $152.50. I sometimes wonder if there is a group of bidders, bidding these things up and maybe not making an actual sale, just to set a false market price.

The reason I wonder about this, is I had put the HR Giger Tarot, which I got a $75.00 bid on and The Dreampower Tarot by R.J. Stewart, which I got a $100 bid on and now I cannot contact the bidders. I am getting no responce and I noticed one had only 1 feedback.

Not sure what is happening.

I know someone who sells on ebay.
They have 2 different accounts. Sometimes they end up buying off themselves.
They get great feedback like that.

Also, loads of people get their friends to bid up their items. Sometimes, of couse, they will be left with the item and still have to pay ebay. But I suppose they get good feedback and sell the item again!

One thing, especially with people with a low ebay score.
They put on a spur of the momment bid, and then change their minds.
Or think that they bid too high and don't want to buy.

Ebay, just one big scam place!

I remember reading the eBay policies once. Apparently eBay is officially OK with vendors having more than one account. eBay indicates that a vendor may have legitimate reasons for doing so.

I can see having two accounts. If you're known for 'safe' stuff like baby clothing you may not want to introduce the Goth outfits and tarot cards to people who know you for cute, cuddly, and safe. It could cost you customers.

Of course it goes without saying that you don't leave feedback on yourself like you're some different person. That's plain fraud.

I sometimes wonder if there is a group of bidders, bidding these things up and maybe not making an actual sale, just to set a false market price.

I never thought of that; they must think they will make quite a profit (and therefore have several copies probably) because they may themselves end up with the item for which they tried to raise the price.
I think people may just get caught up in the bidding and then realise too late they can't or don't want to pay such a price.
Friends pushing up the price for an item is something different and quite easy to do with low risk, so I guess that happens regularly.

Here is another thought on such an absurd price. On Amazon, there is no listing fee. The only fees incurred happen once an item is sold. As such, a seller has nothing to lose by setting a really high price on an item. Not if they aren't in a rush to sell, anyway.

To be honest, I've also heard some rumors regarding other "situations" that are impeding a reprint of the Greenwood in particular -- but since I've not been able to confirm them, I won't add grist to the rumor mill by repeating them. My point being that in addition to my comments on the other thread, there could be any number of reasons why a deck never sees a reprint, beyond the perception of "financial non-feasibility" on the part of the publisher. ...

The Tarot Garden (http://www.tarotgarden.com?rs=3378)

From what I read on the internet, Cheska Potter has the publishing rights, they reverted to her after the company went bankrupt, no? So it seems she would have control over whether it's republished (though I don't really know ).

Also what happened to the Norse being republished? I heard last year that the Norse' author, Clive Barrett, was speaking of a reprint.

I hadn't heard anything about the company going bankrupt -- the Greenwood was published by Thorson's, which is an imprint of Harper-Collins. As least as of a few weeks ago, Thorson's was still publishing.

Which, of course, doesn't mean that the rights haven't reverted to Ms. Potter. All I can say is that simply because one has the rights to publish something doesn't mean that one might choose do to so, for whatever reason.

Also what happened to the Norse being republished? I heard last year that the Norse' author, Clive Barrett, was speaking of a reprint.
According to some personal email exchanges I had with Mr. Barrett, he did say that he was indeed in negotiations at one point for a reprint of the Norse. However, since the Norse hasn't reappeared on the market, one can only assume that those negotiations were not successful -- or at least, that they haven't been successful up to this point.

Oddly enough, The Book of T: New Tarot for the Aquarian Age went on Ebay awhile back. I contacted the seller and found out that the deck was missing a Trump card. I didn't bid on it, but when I checked back it sold for around $70 !! And that was even after she corrected her listing to mention the missing card!

Then, about two months ago, I saw another copy listed - complete set with all the books, the extra card, and even the cassette tape, all in very good condition in the original box. I put my maximum bid in at $40, but the auction ended at $20!!!!! And I assure you, it's in perfect, mint condition.

Apparently, there were only 2 runs of it, 500 in each. There are no plans to reprint it, as far as I know. I've heard that it's considered a "novelty" deck, which pretty much appeals to Neil Gaiman/Dave McKean's Sandman comic fans. I will NEVER sell this deck, because I'm definitely a Neil Gaiman fan. And I absolutely love the deck, comic series notwithstanding. Dave McKean is such an incredibly creative guy.

I know that if it can be found for sale anywhere, it's pricey. I have no clue as to how much it's going for, however.

I have also watched the first editions, and those generally go for over $100, average price (from what I have observed) around $150.00.

There were 5,000 per edition not 500, but they did disappear ultra fast, especially as they never were released through the standard tarot outlets. They were sold strictly through comic book stores and comic collectors magazines so the McKean fans grabbed them up for the art as soon as they hit the shelves.

I've seen prices for them up to $200 but they do vary and they are usually priced over $100 a deck, regardless of which printing they're from. I heard the second printing is a little sturdier than the first one, but never had the two to compare.

I was at Borders yesterday and they still have it in their notebook of decks they carry saying it's a special order item for like $32 dollars. I recently snagged a big Thoth deck with green borders. It's in a green box with the Two of Disks on the front. The copyright says 1978, 1983; Published by Samuel Weiser, Inc.; ISBN 0-87728-452-0. It also has a web address listed, so I'm thinking it was probably released late 80s early 90ish.

Anyway, I read the thread on the various versions of the Thoth but I'm still not exactly sure what the value on this one might be. The person who sold it to me said it normally goes for $60, but she only charged me $15, so I'm a little suspicious of the $60 figure. Anyone have a clue?

Try ebay France

search.ebay.fr

Many French sellers only seem to consider posting within
France, but you can mail them and they will usually let you bid from outside France.

Copies there go at a reasonable price. I got a copy for 40 Euro quite recently, which seemed fair to me.

After I did a 'want' posting and asked for notification, as an experiment I wrote Servants of Light Tarot for $75.00. It wasn't like the mint copy that was obtained a few years ago and gave to a worthy student--my replacement cost for a mint one is higher nowadays.

I was informed last week and posted it to this forum--as I have a mint copy.

If anyone does want a Norse Tarot for a similar price $50-75--do post it on the want list at abebooks.com under your subscriber options...you may be pleasantly surprised! A used bookstore might take a chance on taking such an item in stock because a buyer is waiting for it!

Abebooks.com came through again for me by me creating a 'want' and it is free to list your want. I wanted a first edition Stairs of Gold (Scala D'Oro) with gold borders, box, original paper booket, Tavaglione signature and limited edition notice and the cost was around $80 for everything. Since my other first edition
was a used surprise with a few small printing nits (one fleck of white on a card; the booklet text has a few letters faded) and cost was under $14 or so, I've been fortunate.

The same bookstore, Sunrise Books in Berkeley, California, is run by someone specializing in the metaphysical titles. He has the following:

GOLDEN DAWN TAROT 1st EDITION, signed by Israel Regardie and Wang for in the $200-300 range, way less than the over $500 in some ebay auctions.

Tarotgarden.com also is a great resource for such queries. If you are willing to look for European titles in foreign languages, you will also be sometimes fortunate on ebay and abebooks.com.

Best regards,

Cerulean

That is why I put ebay things in 'Watch' even if I am not buying because once the auction ends you can at least find out what it finally sold for.

A signature can do many things for you - if it can be authenticated. When I had Robin Wood sign one of my decks I also had her sign the box, too - which I immediately opened up flat and have saved that way.

Now if only that would happen with the Greenwood...

P.S. Also just picked up the Granny Jones on ebay for $60 american dollars including shipping--super excited about that one!

P.P.S. And it's interesting that a Morgan's Tarot went recently for $76...I sold my extra on ebay and only got $40! Guess it all depends who's on there at the time...

Like your humour - and have you ever thought that you could sell half of those decks and probably retire early?

The fact that I've seen one or two (dozen) on your list that I'd like has nothing to do with it!

Where you live sounds lovely. I dream of living in one of those remote - type houses on the mountains when we drive round there. Mind you, I can imagine your problems when it snows...

gregory
21-12-2005, 01:11
When it snows I hole up and don't go to work - I'm in the NHS, so that's GOOD !!!! You may, however mow my lawn any time.

I will add you to the growing list of people from here and other forums who want specific decks when my executors sell up after I kick the bucket !!!

But for once I wasn't being funny - my brand new Daughters deck was packed very insecurely in turquoisey blue paper, held together with a "not holding this together very well" white sticker !

How are your Shingles now?
Are you better?
I hope you are better. Shingles are really bad, so I am told.

And I also would like to live where you do (up a hill) especially if you have no neighbours.

A Morgans tarot went for £40 here, a month or two ago.
I thought it was a lot for such an odd looking thing.
But what do I know?

Shingles take a while. Yes they are very horrible. Let us talk of nicer things.

What counts as a neighbour ? My nearest is 500 yards. Would that do you ? (On the other had we all know each other up here; people notice when someone strange comes to your house, which is useful at times; people collect each others parcels (very useful) and so on. It's great - BUT - mowing a vertical lawn is not such fun.

Morgan's is rather fun, actually - and I guess availability (lack of) pushed up the price.

What do you know ? Don't start me... A lot about Crowley, I believe... :P

Lillie
21-12-2005, 09:18
500 yards would be cool.
And I'd just let the garden grow. It's good for the wild things.
Though I would cut a little bit for the blackbirds, and other worm peckers.

At present our neighbours are practically on the doorstep, and they hate us!
We look so bad we bring the value of their property down!

Well, I have only seen a few of morgans, so perhaps I'm not getting the best of it.

I still have my Morgan's, and it's an utter delight. It reads very well, once you get used to it. I'm out of practice now, but for quite a while it was my main deck.
I'm still trying to figure out how much the black and white daughters of the Moon is going for. I have 2, one is half colored (!) but the other is untouched. I don't need 2 of them, especialy as I'd like one of the new colored ones. And a few other new decks, besides, I'm an hopeless addict. :cool5:

I guess I've always liked the odd-ducks-decks, and I hope I always will.

Latin, possibly something to do with God...

Please, put me out of my misery, tell me what it means!

Yes as Marion says, it means 'seize the day' and when I first heard it I immediately thought of the Fool in the tarot deck which is what I feel like on this little journey so 'voila'...there you get latin and french :D

It was first publised by The Aquarian Press in 1990, but I don't know what color box it was in. I have the red book and card set and it was published in 1995 by Thorsons.

A 1968 6" x 9" vintage Albano-Waite sold for US$113 on ebay. This giant size one is so hard to find!!

I guess it's not all that over priced if people are willing to pay USD200 for Greenwood?? What you all think?

HudsonGray
16-01-2006, 07:07
TOO much! But like any free market society, whatevery people are willing to lay out as cash is going to be the final price on something.

Jeannette

I disagree that the selling price was too much. The 6" x 9" Albano-Waite is far, far scarcer than the Greenwood. I wasn't even entirely sure they existed. I'd received reports, but all were "through the grapevine;" I've never seen one in person.

I would estimate fair market price for the Ravenswood at $30 - $70, depending on condition etc., etc. Just one person's opinion.

Very tricky that one. You think you are buying the deck set, but if you look at the small print, it is just the book.

(apoplexy)Yes, it shows up on eBay. Apparently it was given as a gift to folks attending the very first screening at Disney World. Only a few hundred decks (if that) exist and tarot collectors have to compete with Nightmare before Christmas collectors.

I too held myself back from this one for a while, but found I couldn't resist it any longer when I found a copy on an Ebay Buy-it-Now recently for only $50. So one can get this for a reasonable price if you just wait till one turns up.

Although not a tarot deck at all I suppose it is a part of the context of modern tarot, at least that is how I justified buying it.

There are two sets on offer at the moment at $80 which is still a lot.

hi all, i was wondering how much an opened, but excellent condition tarot of the cloisters would go for? i have been looking for it and have seen it sold anywhere from $25-$70. what would be a fair price to purchase the deck? is eBay the way to go?

Scion
12-08-2006, 15:11
Caveat emptor!

I may be crazy or thinking of a different deck, but I think I've seen the Cloisters go for less that $10. In fact, I remember a trade thread a while back with it being given away. I can think of a couple auctions on eBay where the deck didn't sell at all. Uf I am crazy... I hope you'll forgive me.

Maybe the deck has suddenly spiked in value over the past few months?

Nikkeihime, Scion is right. Don't pay that much for this deck. This deck is currently going for under it's retail value. I paid $25 for mine at a store and people aren't selling them on ebay for much more than $10. Like Scion said, sometimes it is hard to give it away.

What type box is it in? The one I want is in a "treasure box" for two stacks of cards. I own one in a long violet colour box currently, but really want one like I had. (Nostalgia can be a curse sometimes, can't it?)

I look forward to your reply [on what type box]. Have a blessed day!

My sister for looking for a set of them, too. She does not mind which box they are in, since she does not keep them & stores her's in wooden card boxes. I could mention them to her. How much do you think it would cost all together with shipping, exchange rate, et al?

I'm quite lucky with OOP decks!

I found my Greenwood in a chest of old magickal things of my pertners. It used to belong to an old priestess of his, but she left it with him, and he doesn't read tarot- yum!

The tarot of the Cloisters I got for about £20, but there's a shop in Galstonbury, (The Speaking Tree) which has copies for £7 at the moment! It also has copies of the Alchemical...

My absolute prize is a first edition Vertigo in excellent condition with the box and book for £20 on ebay. I think I was very lucky! I paid more than that for my Shakespearian- £25 I think.

Blessings,

I just got a Gipsy Tarot Tsigane for a penny. Plus $3.99 for postage, so $4 total for a deck that's offered on ebay and Amazon for $50 and up. I thought for sure it must be a mistake and this deck, which was listed as new, would arrive as a tattered, useless pile of junk. But it arrived today and is brand new as advertised. I'm somewhat amazed. It's a weird deck, but I'll study it and see how I like it. I figure the price certainly couldn't be beat.

The listing remained up on Amazon for at least a couple of days after I bought it, so I wondered if they had more than one copy, but its gone now. Did I get a major bargain? Or is there something I don't know about this deck?

Not sure, but I think this deck may have gotten reissued recently since I've seen a lot of them on eBay and also snagged a sealed one from a used bookstore for $9. The Gipsy Tarot/Zieguner Tarot is listed on AGMuller's website (http://www.agm.ch/content/tarotworld/products/detail/gipsytarot/1/index.html), so I would guess that means it's in print. Does your box look like that one or did you manage to snag an older printing of it? The one I got for $9 looks like that one.

I have gotten some really good prices on a few oop decks in the past several months - Tarot de Pumariega brand new condition for $8.99 (see it on ebay and elsewhere for around $50 to a little over $100)

First Edition never used signed Tarot of the Dead (wins award for thinnest card stock EVER) for $14.99. See it for $75-ish to $120 online.

And today - the Oswald Wirth - not mint, but intact and in pretty good shape - for $10. I think someone here on AT just had one for sale for $75 - but hers was probably in mint condition.

The other older and oop decks i have scored recently have been from here on AT, and I am very thankful for the great prices I have gotten from some of the wonderful members here!!
