I have noticed many great phrases in miscellaneous messages. They usually say something like, "I think of this card as the ____ card."

I propose a thread where we share our favorite phrases and thoughts we use for certain cards. It can have a fortune telling aspect, spiritual aspect, or any way you tend to use your favorite tarot phrases.

I'll go first...when the 9 of cups come up I often say, "This is the 9 of cups, some people call this the good luck card. When this card comes up the old gypsy would say , 'Whatever you wish for will be granted.' " I then apply it to whatever is appropriate. It's a good phrase that people seem to enjoy hearing.

I hope others have ineresting things to share to make this an interesting thread.

my favorite phrase for the six of cups is "that which is soon to be a memory".

When ever I see the three of cups I say (to myself because that's who I read for) "Ah, this is the party card!" Then I figure out how that would fit in with the reading.

I call the RWS four of Pentacles the Greedy Bastard card. I call the 7 of Swords the Sneaky Bastard card. :D The 10 of Cups I refer to as Ding-dong, the witch is dead! The 4 of cups is the Petulant Bastard. (right lot of bastards in this deck, I think.) The 9 of Cups is the Wish Card. Tradition calls the King of Wands the country gentleman.

A few of my names for the cards are obscene, and can't be repeated, such as the Queen of Wands. (it has to do with her cat.) :joke:

The Magician - The Transformer Card
The Empress - The Mother Card
The Wheel - The Flow Card
Strength - The Sexy Card (if it suits the situation)
The Hanged Man - The Passive/Agressive Master Card (if it suits)
Temperance - The Alchemist
The Devil - The Sexy card or The Challenger
The Tower - The Ouch card
Judgement - The Wake-Up Call

6 of cups - The Nostalgia Card
7 Coins - The Slooow Card
8 of Wands - The message card

And recently:
3 of Swords - The Dentist card. (It will hurt as hell but it has to be done or it will hurt even more.)

In most cases the keywords feel rather limiting, they were really good to have to learn tarot with and still today it is a fun exercise to try and sum up a card in two or three words.

The 9 of Pentacles is the card of the ultimate Strong, Sexy, Independent woman.....for me she represents someone who has figured it all out, has gotten her life in order and now reaps the benefits. She is perfectly content with her life, her solitude (by choice) and her successes, both material and spiritual.....

Also, I think of the Chariot as the "Let's Go!" card, and the Hermit is my Inner Guide card...lighting the way for me to access my inner thoughts and personal goals. AKA the "it's all about me" card!!! :P

:) Luna

EDITED to correct error: changed "cards" to "goals" :)

Sometimes if I see the Hermit reversed I call it the Hagar the Horrible card. If they aren't familiar with the comic strip I briefly explain it, then go on with the description.

In one comic Hagar goes through great difficulty to climb a mountain to see a guru. He asks the guru, "Oh wise guru, what is the secret to happiness?" The guru replies, "Good food, good wine, and good women." Hagar looks around and says, "You don't have any of those things here." The guru replies, "Who says I'm happy."

The message of the Hermit reversed is to search for happiness right in front of you, not on some distant mountain top.

I work at a residential supported living program for learning disabled adults. Gossip and rumors swirl around all the time in such a small, enclosed community.

In one of the groups I run, we sometime discuss tarot cards. We often refer to the 5 of Wands as the "Drama card" (kind of like drama queen). Everyone hitting everyone else with sticks, not really getting anywhere, not really solving anything.

Life just seems like that on some days!

This has become my favourite card in the Robin Wood deck.
Because of the Phoenix Rising in this card,
So I would say "The Phoenix is Rising, you are coming out of the ashes and being reborn"

5 of Pentacles - Out in the cold

For me:-

4 Pentacles is the miser
2 Cups:- love/relationship card
7 Swords is the sneak thief
The Hanged Man - is stalemate or the stuck card

but the Devil in the Morgan Greer always makes me think of ' look at me, I'll shock the hell out of you' lol

I have been thinking really strongly about this thread for the past day or so...letting it mull around my brain...trying to figure out if I have certain key words or phrases that come to mind with certain cards...
And when I just took out my deck and started sifting through it, as if I was doing a reading...

Oh my. Yes.

In fact...I don't think there is a single card here that I DON'T have a ready phrase for! :)

Some of mine...

Lovers is the "Choice" card

Until recently.(Very recently!) the Hierophant has been the "Righteous" card...

Chariot is the" Movin' on up!" card

Moon is the "Sleepless nights" card

Sun is the "Go and play NOW!" card

both the 3 cups and the 4 wands are the "party" cards...

4 cups is the"Too good to be true" card

9 cups is "Careful what you wish for"...

3 wands is "Your ship's commin' in!"

8 of pents has always either been the "apprentice" card...or the "Time to make the doughnuts!" card

(though lately, thanks to Firemaiden it has really been all about the pies!)

10 pents is the "hierloom" card...

the 3 swords has always been the "healing" card for me...alternately known as "One good cry left"...

when I first started reading, the 8 cups coined the phrase..."Leaving to follow the Dead" ...

(It originally meant the Grateful Dead...but has since taken on another completely esoteric meaning!)
I also call it the "journey" card...

And I have been known to use the term "The best card in the deck" when referring to the Fool...
and "my Favorite card" when referring to either the Magician or the 3 Pentacles.

Thanks for this very insightful thread! I just love everyone else's terms, phrases, keys and wonderful descriptives!

9 of Swords = Drama Queen

Tower = Cosmic kick in the rear (it's for your own good, you know)

4 of Pentacles = Invest in yourself

9 of Cups = be careful what you wish for

7 of Cups = get your head out of the clouds!

2 of Cups = partnerships

2 of Wands = the Gambler's card

5 of Pentacles = don't be afraid to ask for help

Those are all I can think of right now.

Oooh, Rhiannon, I like that!
What do you do with the 3 of Wands? It seems to vary so much, deck to deck ?

mota
24-05-2004, 14:30
I think of the three of cups reversed as the spider web card...to me it talks about a triangle relationship. You are on one side of the triangle. On one point is someone you want closer, the other point has someone who just doesn't seem to want to leave your life.

It's like when you get a spider's web on your hands, as much as you shake, you just can't get rid of a sticky situation. It indicates more action is called for to reduce your relationship situation from a three person triangle to a two person partnership.

Rhiannon
24-05-2004, 19:29
Thanks magpie! I like it too.

I guess the 3 of Wands would be the traditional "your ship has come in", but since it can be either good or bad... perhaps "return on your investment" might be a better one? It might have been a good or bad investment, but it's all going to come back to you now.

*Rhiannon takes a moment to remember a story about a blind man and the wind }) *

I don't have a good key phrase for this one! :( It's a bit murky....

I think of the

6 of swords as the travel card.

8 of wands as the go for it card.

6 of pentacles/coins as the wellfare, pension card

Knight of Swords as the treacherous, mean, calculating one

Queen of Wands as the self-centered, energetic non-stoppable b****.

5 of pentacles/coins as a warning to live within one's means

Thanks for this thread!
I love some of the posted phrases. See how you like these:

For the Robin Wood:
10 swords-C'mon! I'm bleeding here....
2 swords-I think of a kid with fingers in her ears..."LaLalalalala"
and the companion card
8 swords-"Do something about it!" or "Move your skinny *%#!"
These two cards always seem like they can change their situation at any time, it's as if they like being in their respective binds, as if it works for them, or at least had been.
4 wands-king and queen of the prom
2 pentacles-Mummy! Look what I can do!
The Chariot-Medeival Ice Cream Man
Strength-I think of a married couple who can finish each others sentences, or of the caring you see between couples who've been together forever. It is my alternate lovers card....but not sexual love, more platonic.
Phrase; Ya' big lug!

I have a few that always pop into my mind, no matter what intuition will follow, including...

Tower - "Ch-ch-ch-changes (turn, and face the pain...), as sung by Mr. David Bowie....lol

This is a great thread ... here's a few that bubbled to the surface:

the Heirophant = the Establishment card

the Moon = the Illusory card

the Sun = the Free Spirit card/the Healing card

6 of Cups = the Wallowing card (in nostalgia? other non-sexual pleasures?)

7 of Cups = the If It Sounds Too Good to Be True ... card

9 of Cups = the Monkey's Paw card (you'll get what you wished for ... so be careful!)

Page of Cups = Someone's Telling You Fish Tales ...

Ace of Wands = the Carpe Diem card

8 of Wands = the High Energy card

3 of Pentacles = the Prove It! card

4 of Pentacles = the Daffy Duck card (ref to the cartoon where he's tiny, and clutching a pearl saying "it's mine, mine, all mine!" Pretty much the same as the "greedy bastard" interpretation!)

7 of Pentacles = the Taking Stock card

8 of Pentacles = the Apprentice card (non-Trump ...)

That's it so far!

Let's see...

The Hierophant- "look there's me!" (it's my soul and personality card)

Wheel of Fortune- "What goes up, must come down" card

Knight of Swords- the Activist card

7 of Swords- Leveling the playing field

4 of Cups- the Sir Issac Newton card. He's waiting for the apple to hit him on the head to inspire him.

2 of Wands- the Christopher Columbus card. He's gotten the funding from Isabella, and is thinking about his voyage.

2 of Pentacles- the "Keeping all your plates spinning" card

3 of Pentacles- the teamwork card, or play your strengths.

4 of Pentacles- the Miser, or holding tight to what you have.

3 of Cups- the bellydancer card

8 of Wands- "Coming at you fast!" card

8 of Pentacles- the Apprentice, or "Practice, practice, practice" card

10 of Wands- "Biting off more than you can chew" card

9 of Swords- the Nightmare or "Troubles worried over at night are smaller than they appear."

9 of Cups- the Wish card... real original, I know. LOL

8 of Swords- the "Damsel in distress' or Bondage card... possibly in a sexual manner.

6 of Swords- the Refugee card

And that's probably more than enough for right now!

I like to think of the Four of Cups as the "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!" card. Being a long-time 12-Stepper, when I look at this card I see someone thinking, "Great, I did it again. I ate/drank/smoked/snorted in GREAT excess and I totally need to get sane again." I've been using this interpretation and I really like it.

4 of Cups has always been 'it's another shitty day in Paradise!" for me.

As for Temperance, I could never get close to the Robin Wood Temperance, so I would just say it means "bringing into your life what you need for your growth and development."

Let's see . . .

How I see a card in a Reading can sometimes be entirely diffferent from my usual view of the card, obviously . . .

Having said that:

I usually view the Devil card as: "What NOT to do."

3 of cups: "Party over Here!"

9 of Swords: "Fine. If you want to go down like that." or "It'll be SOLD to you, if you BUY it."

10 of Swords: "Get up! You CAN get up!"

Now, the 5 of cups in the Universal or Rider Waite always draws me and it's one of my favorite cards in the whole deck. I don't know. I just feel so much empathy, sympathy or something, and also this attraction to the figure in the card. I want him to turn around, so I can say, "I'm here." Probably the romantic in me. Not exactly what you meant, but, I thought I'd include it anyway.

Sun crossed by 9 of Swords: (really frequent combination for me) You're worrying too much again, it'll pass.

(Gee, can you tell I'm a Cancer just from what cards I pull frequently enough to HAVE a shorthand like this?)

Found this old thread and thought I'd bump it. I imagine there are many new people here who would enjoy this thread and contribute their favorite phrases.

In addition to their ordinary meanings, here's a couple of phrases I've found useful for these cups:

4 Cups--I won't grow up.
8 Cups--I have grown up. ;)

When I pull Justice, I tend to think, "YOU (or someone) is getting just what they deserve! NOT a popular card!

2 of Pents--juggling money, or options or choices
3 of Pents--work
5 of Pents--after several correct instances, I started thinking of it as the Hung-over card :D

Often right next to the Devil (sex), 3 of Cups (party) or 7 of Swords (he said that?!) card.

The 10 Cups in the Robin Wood deck I think of as the "Little House on the Prairie card"! Well, think about it, re: the TV show. Doesn't the family look just like them, with a boy substituted for one of the younger girls? And the setting? :)
It is, BTW, an excellent representation of a loving family (the card and the TV show).
