Hi, everyone --

I know people have given their favorite spreads in the past, but those threads are gone now, except for the "Spread -- Searching or Creating" thread, which has some good ones. For newer members who would like to share their favorite spreads, or for anyone who wouldn't mind sharing theirs again, I'd love to read them.

Thanks --
Lee

P.S. Here's one favorite of mine -- a five-card spread:

1) Past
2) Present
3) Hidden Factor
4) Advice
5) Outcome

For anything in-depth, I usually use the Celtic Cross. For simpler readings, I like the Key of Hermes (described in the Nigel Jackson LWB) or a three-card "dialectic" spread. I'm also very impressed with Aeonx's Star spread, though I haven't had occasion to use it yet.

geenius, for those who don't have the Nigel Jackson deck, please describe this spread?

my spread is just a horizontal line of cards, depends how many meanings i give to positions, how many cards you get.
and not using positions, just create a story from the cards works as well.

and i don't like the CC spread :(

You read my mind Lee!!! For the last couple of days I've been thinking I (or someone) should post the spread that Talisman came up with for all the newbies!!!

******By the way Talisman - I still use and love your spread!!!! :)

--------8---------
6----------------7
-----1-----2------
---3----4----5----

1) INNER REALITY: the question, your private thoughts, the things the world may not see about you what is hidden, subconscious
2) OUTER REALITY: the world around you, shared reality, environment, family, work, home, lovers, friends
--cards 1 and 2 form the central dynamic of the reading--

3) WANING INFLUENCES
4) PRESENT: significant issues surrounding the question or situation
5) WAXING INFLUENCES
--cards 3, 4, and 5 are the foundation of the matter; the 3 card spread--

6) LESSON CARD: Guidance, wishes, detours, obstacles, challenges
7) FUTURE: What you are moving toward on the path you're following, or situation just beginning
8) WILD CARD: The element of surprise, an aspect not considered, a synthesis to pull the reading together.

I LOVE this spread. It's a very good alternative to the Celtic Cross. YEA for Talisman!!!! :) LOL

oh, i like talisman's spread above. thank you for that.

a few days ago, i was feeling frustrated and blocked and did a variation on my basic three card spread to find out why. i laid a crossing card over each one, to stand for the energy that was blocking my inner directives. i got a very surprising result, the bottom of line of which was i'd be in much deeper trouble if i _wasn't_ blocked by all these forces, so i should sit back and have a rest.

for questions that require a lot more background information, i'm a fan of rachel pollack's work cycle:

---------1/2---------

3-4 -- 5-6-7 -- 8-9

cards 1 and 2 form a cross and are interpreted the same as in the celtic cross spread, with more emphasis on 2 as a development or outcome of 1.

1: inner, some basic quality of the person
2: outer, how that quality translates into action

3: past experience
4: expectations, fears and hopes

5,6,7: work cards. represent opportunities and issues to work on

8: outcome, the way things will likely end up
9: result, the effect the outcome will have on the querant's life

I like the 3 card spread because it can have its positions change to any number ofthingsdepending onthe reading, whetherit be past/present/future, body/mind/spirit, etc, Mary Greer lists a lot of possibilities in Tarot for Yourself :)

I usually do a 1---2---3---4 card spread. It is very helpful

1. Past influences
2. Present Influences
3. Future influences
4. Outcome

faunabay,

I kinda always called this spread the Teacup, cause of its shape, or, the faunabay, cause she seemed to be the only person who really understood what it was all about. Even the phases of the moon.

In a long ago post, faunabay used the phrase, "Celtic Cross rut." And, I thought, me too.

I once wrote a long, long bunch'a stuff about my "Blue Bandanna" spread. Found a print out the other day. Gosh!

So, I agonized in pleading posts about creating the perfect spread, asking Aeclectians for help. I wanted a do-everything spread, like, say, pantyhose, one size fits all, diminutive or queen-size.

Thus, the Talisman spread. Complicated and kinky, 'cause each position can mean so many things, depending on surrounding cards. And, along comes faunabay, whose intuitive parangs and machetes cut through all the complications.

Well, works for me. And I'm so pleased that someone got it right.

I hope some of you have the patience to try this spread, and make it work for you.

A friend of mine once suggested a spread of the ABC's of psychology when her daughter was wanting to do something other than the celtic cross (only spread she knew at the time). The daughter really wanted to use 4 cards, but I normally use only the first 3 and use this for my daily spread.

1: Affect (emotions)
2: Behavior (actions)
3: Cognition (thoughts)

optional 4: key that ties it all together. It is a really simple spread, but can give a lot of information, and her 9 y/o found it very easy to read (as do I)

I've also noticed that overall I tend to be drawn to 7 card spreads, to me they are meaty without being cumbersome (which the CC can become at times), but I don't know that I have 1 fave.

   1 2 3

1 – influences in the immediate past
2 – how they're working out in the present
3 – how things are likely to resolve themselves in the immediate future
4 – predominant theme, true nature of events

If you don't feel like those four cards give you closure, then you can draw a single fifth card and interpret it as advice on how to proceed.

Lee, I like the 5 card spreads you mentioned. There is another 5 cards that I use all the time.

1) Present situation
2) Guidance
3) Obstacles
4) Further Guidance
5) Outcome

I think I get this spread from Joan Bunning's website. I am learning the CC also. I use the CC also (though still learning), works for me.

I on't have a favourite spred, cuz when I do a reading, I just make up a spread there and then to fit in with the question! I find it difficult to try and make a question fit the spread, so I try it the other way round! But, if I'm just doing a general reading, I do an upside down pyramid, starting witha row of 5 cards, then 4 benath that, then 3, 2, 1.... And read! The rows don't represent anything, but in this spread, it is best to look for the positions of Court Cards to other cards, etc...

I go with Kiama on this one. I tend to establish my deck around the issue. I too use a pyramid type but the right way up.

I also use another spread which has three rows of three cards.
Bottom row establishing past, middle row for present and top for future. Then I elaborate further by producing another row which starts from the bottom and goes upward to 4 cards. They then extend the virtues of the previous 3 rows. The 4th card representing possible outcomes.

I get a very concise and deep aspect to my readings with this method.

aeonx' Star Spread:

.......5.......6..........
1.........S7.....2 ......
.......3.......4...........

S= Significator
1) As you see yourself
2) What you're not seeing about yourself
3) & 4): Root problem(s)
5) & 6): Key; what to do
7) Expected outcome

1 & 2 'belong' together, as well as:
3 & 4
5 & 6
5 & 6 & 7
and ofcourse all the cards should be read in relation to each other. You could also relate other cards to one another, as you see fit.

Any opinions are welcomed.

There's a great book titled Complete Book of Tarot Spreads by Evelin Burger and Johannes Fiebig ISBN 0-8069-9505-X

It contains 122 layouts (small and large) for all sorts of readings as well as a few brief chapters on the relevance of numerology, majors, minors and associations of wands, cups, pentacles and swords.

I have used your Final Out Come spread a few times actually, even for my readings from the site, and it works wonders .....

A very good spread for when peeps already know what the outcome should be.

I have used it for one asking about loosing weight and health in general - so I figured the outcome was just that, loosing weight and gainning better health - it worked very well for us and gave her some high quality guidance.

Very neat spread Lee ;)

That's one I just recently invented, and
I like it for its simplicity (I mostly use
it for a quick morning's What's up today?

1->2
3->4
5->6

card 1 leads to card 2
card 3 leads to card 4
card 5 leads to card 6

my favorite and almost exclusive spread is my own tree of life.

it uses 10 cards.

--1--
3---2
5---4
--6--
8---7
--9--
-10--

first 3 cards, above the abyss (the spiritual direction which you may or may not be feeling already)
1 - your will or direction

2 and 3 - what supports this will/direction and what you may learn from it.

4 - what's coming up in the near future (later today or tomorrow)

5 - your strength

6 - your heart

7 - emotional self or relationship

8 - intellectual self

9 - astral (dream state) - the lessons you are learning in this state

10 - physical self/world/reality for you right now.

i seldom do two layouts of this spread, usually one is all that is needed but then sometimes i do three.....it depends on the cards, the querent and their situation at this time.

in light,
jade :)

1)card of the day

I use the Celtic Cross most of the time. Sometimes I take 3 cards for the "leaving influences", "main question", "probable outcome".
Or five cards with no particular order to verify a person or situation quickly.

i found a three card love spread somehwere on the net a few years ago and just reworked it a bit and came up with this. it has been my fav spread some time now and i know it is also used a by my most excellent ex-coworkers in the World Tarot Readers group.

here it is:

Love Spread (simple line spread)

1 - how you love yourself

2 - how you love others

3 - what may be blocking the flow of love

4 - what can help you to invite love into your life

5 - what may serve to keep you on the path of love

simple as that:-)
i use extra cards where it is needed to clear things up.

As requested, one of my favourite spreads that I've been using on the reading exchange. Its called the "Spiritual Guidance" spread and only the Majors are used. But I can see no reason why it couldn't be adapted to use the whole deck for any reading. Sometimes I lay a minor card alongside each major for extra information.

Cards are laid 1*2*3*4*5*6*7
8

1. Now ** concerns, focus, desire
2. Motivation behind desire
3. Underlying anxiety, disappointment
4. What you need to understand, are unaware of
5. What to do, best course of action
6. Best way to proceed
7. Spiritual guidance for the future
8. Ultimate attainment, outcome.

Enjoy!!!

Here is a spread that I made up. I just sent it to Bec's fabulous site also. It has really been helpful for me and my friends:

Layout:

1....................2.....................3
4....................5.....................6

Position Meanings:

1 Querant
2 Partner
3 Querant and Partner together
4 How Querant feels about the relationship
5 How Partner feels about the relationship
6 Wisdom or Next Step

or you could use it for decisions:

1 Option1
2 Option2
3 Other Option(not a specific but meant to see if there is another option that would be better. You could omit this card and card 6 if you like)
4 Outcome1
5 Outcome2
6 Outcome if you choose another option.

I hope you like it, Sarah English

Hi! I am new here, looks like a wonderful forum! I found you guys looking for spreads on the net and I found a website with alot of good ones, if it is ok to put that address here i will. Theres about 163 spreads ranging from General, Lovers, health, decision, classic, daily spreads, and more. The page contains nothing but a pulldown menu to either view free reading or to view layout. Since I dont like automated readings i choose a spread then choose veiw layout then use my own cards. Heres the addy:

I agree, I also don't like spreads made by a computer. They asked me to think of a question and concentrate on passing this question to the computer. I just felt silly.
I'd rather do my own spreads, I like to shuffle my cards as a way to get started and concentrate.

Hi all,

I have taken the tea cup and turned it into my own..

1/2: the person I am reading for..

3: past
4: present
5: possible future (never tell anyone it's the future)

6: subconsious
7consious

8: WHAT FILLS YOUR CUP: ADVISE...this is what you need to do to reach your possible future.

I love this spread..it's simple and yet it's amazing how well works for me..

I use a three card spread to read for my next day at work, not sure if I made it up, or heard of it somewhere, but I've been using it for a long time.

1. My attitude
2. Attitude of others
3. outcome of the day

This spread has been straight-on more than once for me. Kind of similar to others, but mine deals more with emotions instead of actions.

I like the alternative spread, is very useful if you want an answer to specific question such as should I go abroad? or should I change job? should I leave my parents and so on, this spread is intended to show what will happen if you persue a couse of action that you are already considering and also what will happen if you were not to do this or were to do something else instead. the order in wich the cards are laid out suggest the way in wich they should be interpreted: 1 is laid opposite 2, 3 opposite 4 and 5 opposite 6 the cards can therefore be seen as pair, the individual cards in each pair opposing one another in a way that should make evident both the contrast and similarities in the two different situations the cards at the top of the spread 5,1 and 3 show what will be likely to happen if you proceeds in the way you are presently considering; while4,2 and 6 show some alternative wich can suggest a better couse of action that you have not thought of: or that you have thought of but had decided to reject. card 7 the outcome it can show a possible solution, but is more likely to present a general view of the situation, clarifying a particular problem or pointing to some aspect of it wich is important to consider. Below is the spread.

Begin with three card spreads. Begin doing 3 card readings (for others). Do them for-ever. Do a lot of them.
buy a spiral notebook. Use it as a Journal (very important). Write down every reading (both cards and your interpretation).

Only read for yourself no more than once a week.

Three card readings are versatile, and accurate. More cards do not always mean better readings (but they look good on tv).

Read books (but remember they are a reference tool, not a reverence tool) (I recommend “Tarot Reversals” by Mary Greer. 3 card spreads? Page 215.

Read old posts on this site.

Welcome.

Tarotphelia's Daily Spread
I made up this spread because I was dissatisfied with just one card for a day- I like a spread that gives more specifics.

1. What I should do today.

2. What I shouldn't do today.

3. The Unexpected

4. How can I be happy today?

5. Spiritual Advice

1**************4

*******3

2**************5

People not might be comfortable asking for so much direction, but I have found it very useful.

There are sometimes relationships between the positions to watch for. For example, if 4 says you would be happy spending money, but 2 says you should'nt be letting loose of any pentacles , you might reconsider! Especially if the card of the unexpected indicates a pentacle crisis of some kind.

The unexpected & the spiritual advice cards can come in very handy to to tip you off to stressful or nice things coming , and give you a direction for how to deal with them the best way.

If the cards are layed out and seem to have no relation to one another, sometimes it is a general message to be taken as a whole, rather than based on the meanings of the positions.

Yesterday I posted to the subscribers-only Suggestions forum that we add a new forum exclusively for spreads.

Old spreads, new spreads, red spreads, blue spreads...everything except perhaps bedspreads. Except I occasionally do an impromptu reading on mine.

Currently spreads are posted in this forum -- Using Tarot Cards -- but so are threads about many other subjects. Spread threads (try saying that a few times quickly!) do tend to vanish after a while. And who wants to type "spreads" in the search field? You end up having to sort through zillions of posts!

The perfect spread could be lurking two years back...and there's no really practical way of discovering any diamonds in the rough in the current system.

So the subscribers can voice support/concerns in the thread under Suggestions, and the rest of you might want to leave any feedback here...

I like the idea of a forum exclusively for discussing spreads !

For daily spread I now use tarotphelia's (thanks tp :)), not sure if it will become my favourite, so far I like it very much.
I do the reading with my halloween deck but I take the corresponding "spiritual advice" card from my shapeshifter deck (my most intuitive deck) and keep this card with me all day.

For specific questions or a view over a longer period I use Rachel Pollock's work cycle.
I try other spreads as well.

Kyrielle - excellent idea! I vote a resounding yes!

In the meantime - I have a handfull of favorite spreads which I use...

The one I use the most is the "Daily Pyramid" which I gleaned from http://www.tarotspreads.com/spreads.ads

............2
......1..........3

1 - Beginning of day
2 - Peak or main theme of the day
3 - Ending of the day

I use this spread for daily readings for myself, and for clients who want to know how their day is going to be.

The spread which I use next most frequently is a 5-card past/present/future line which can be easily expanded to look further into past and present (by making it a 7 or even 9-card line with the extra cards at the ends looking further into the past and future) - I found this spread in the "Tarot Layouts FAQ" by David C. Jones found at; http://www.geocities.com/Athens/2377/LayoutFAQ4.html

1 - past
2 - recent past (last few days)
3 - present
4 - near future (next few days)
5 - future

This works very well for me and the people I read for when used for general weekly readings as well as looking at specific questions. On a few occasions, when using this for a specific question, I will add a 6th card below the "present" card, this 6th card represents an outcome/advice position.

When a person needs a more in-depth look at things going on in their life, especially with a rather generalized question, or no specific question, I usually use the Celtic Cross (learned from "A Complete Guide to the Tarot" by Eden Gray).

I have also used Rhiannon's 5-card "expandable" relationship spread with good results. You can find this at: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1521

Hope this helped you out Lee...

True - I don't know why anyone would want to do that.

Why couldn't you refine your search? Type 'relationship' and 'spread' if that's the type of spread you're looking for - or 'love' and 'spread'? Thanks to Solandia we have a pretty sophisticated search facility... Still, even there you'll find a lot of threads...

Just a triffle worried about the resources needed to run this board/community.... })

Trogon - thanks. I like your daily pyramid. :)

I don't remember where I found this online, but it's become one of my favorite spreads.

The cards are laid out in two lines, shaped like a horseshoe or rainbow.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx4/11xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx3/10xxxxxxxxxx5/12xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxx2/9xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx6/13xxxxxxxx
1/8xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx7/14

The cards are read in pairs, and it is the interaction of the two cards that makes this reading so powerful and subtle.

1/8. The recent past

2/9 The present situation

3/10 your spiritual, emotional state of mind at present

4/11 what you don't expect

5/12 the gate - what you must go through; what you must learn

6/13 the near future

7/14 the farther future; probably outcome

I have found this reading to give very precise and useful information. Positions 4/11 and 5/12 are particularly good - providing breakthroughs in understanding what we might be denying or not open to because of position 3/10.

Hope this is as useful to you as it has been for me. And if anyone knows where this is from, let me know as I want to forward my thanks.

Wow, a two year old thread revived. Your spread, Red Maple is very close to Umbrae's Horseshoe spread and yes, it's a very powerful spread.

[edit] You might find this thread from Umbrae interesting to read...a lot of us did at the time...

Thanks for the thread, lawguy - what great stories! And thank you, Umbrae, for the Horseshoe spread. Sure to be one of my long-time favorites, I think.

I don't remember where I got this one, but I use it every New Moon with very good results.

The cards are laid by weeks in the New Moon cycle. You should read mundane readings for the Minor Arcana - don't get real esoteric with it. Read what hits you immediately when you turn over the card. Courts always represent people who will have an effect during the period of time in which they appear.

Trumps, particularly two or more in a given week, herald events or occurrences which will impact the Seeker beyond the time covered by the spread.

The Significator card is #13 in the middle of the spread. It's helpful to go back to review the spread in context with the Significator after each week has passed, and then again with the spread as a whole after the month is over.

XXXXXXXXX2XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX11
XXXXXX1XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX10
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX13XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXX6XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX9X
XXXXXXXXX5XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX8XXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXX4XXXXXXXXXX7XXXXXXXXX

Read cards 1-3 for week 1
Read cards 4-6 for week 2
Read cards 7-9 for week 3
Read cards 10-12 for week 4
Read card #13 as the significator
