Rune "Dice"

sunflowr

I bought an interesting little clay set of rune "dice". There's 4 of them, each one 6 sided and inscribed with a different rune. 24 runes in all (no blank rune). Has anyone used a set like that? How did you like it and how did you do readings with it?

of Rune Dice...

In this system there are four wooden dice, each with six different
runes on it. The dice are rolled, often on a sheet divided into themed
sections in a similar way to a spread, and then interpreted in the
usual way. Some additional aspects are considered though, such
as whether two dice touch.

The Rune School Topics: Rune Forms

Some say that Rune dice can be interesting, but also very
complicated (depending on the set) if you're just learning.
I like the idea, and am interested to hear what they say!

As with many things, I guess it depends on your technique... :D or beliefs?

The only thing I perceive is that (naturally enough) the allowed Rune combination must depend on which set of runes occupy the same di(c)e i.e. once you've cast the first "Rune" that's another Five Runes (die sides) effectively removed from the "bag". If I understand correctly, some folk seem to repeatedly draw/replace a single Rune to allow for duplicates too. Maybe even an interesting concept for Taroists? ;)

Also, I'm happy with cards (or anything divinatory) being randomised (it's what you make of their significance that matters) but happily concede that's unlikely to be quite so satisfactory to other folk...

Hmmm... Less weight? Stones don't bang togeather on long journeys? etc. })

Yes, this is one reason why I don't particularly like Rune Dice. I picked up a set at a half price bookstore but I don't really use them.

Let's make this interesting, and give it a chance.
For instance, you are the resident Rune caster,
and the people ask you to create a set of dice...

How do you begin to go about this joyous task?
First, you decide there will be Four groups of Six.
Next you must dig down deep into your psyche
and come up with these four groups, but how...

The elements, Fire Water Earth and Air perhaps,
or maybe directions, East West North and South.
But do these aspects create the desired groupings?

If you begin with the first Rune, and match it with
five others like it, no matter what differences there
are, if you seek the unifying natures of each instead,
you will have truly begun. The road leads ever on.

With 4 dice, each marked with 6 Runes having an affinity,
when they are cast together the four resultant Runes will
stand to represent various aspects of those chosen groups.

The 1st Die might bear 6 Runes relating to personal things,
the 2nd Die could be for physical manifestations, with the
3rd Die being a group of 6 having a strongly psychic nature,
while the 4th Die bore those Runes concerning the soul...

One might even do a Rune cast to determine the groups,
drawing six Runes for the first die, and so forth for each.
There are always more possibilities if given some thought.

Wouldn't it be simple enough to roll a die (or do something similar) to determine which rune die to roll? That way you get an equal chance of each rune appearing.

You could try this, but a regular die has six pips... :( ;)
Then too, the basic idea is to roll all four Rune dice at once.

Last night after working out the affinities as I saw them,
I found a nice piece of wood, a length of one-by-one inch
well hardened, and cut 10 square pieces to allow for any
irregularities when making the final set of four Rune dice.

Instead I ended up making two sets of 5 Rune dice each.
Four of the dice have the six Runes on them to make 24,
and the fifth one is blank. Yes, a blank Rune die. It came
to me that since it was there, why not include it, and so
it works as a spacer, separating the dice howsoever they
tumble. The blank came like a gift of acknowledgement.

What a wonderful experience, with the reward of a treasure.
Thank you, sunflowr, for bringing this up for consideration.
Christine and I now have our own magical new Rune dice.
