View Full Version : How often does everybody read?

Shalott

Out of my own personal frustration with having been interrupted several times during the one time per week when I can normally actually accomplish a reading, I am just curious what is typical around here for frequency. I know a lot of ppl pull a card a day, and to me, this would count as "once a day," but I'm kind of looking for average. If I can figure out how to do this poll thing, I will be voting "once a week," unfortunately! Hopefully this will change after the holidays...

YAY it worked!

I voted weekly although sometimes I will read everyday.

I voted: More than once daily.
I do a 5 card daily draw for myself every morning and a one card Faerie Oracle draw.
Then most days I am contacted to do phone readings or email readings.
People I know very well are allowed to come to the house.
Some are for clients, some are for family and friends.
Or friends of friends.
Today I did 3 readings.

lark, FIVE CARDS DAILY!!!??? Omg, I am jealous!!!:D

There was one day when I did like 3 readings...that was a good day!

lark, FIVE CARDS DAILY!!!??? Omg, I am jealous!!!:D
It's easy Shalott
Try this for me tommorrow.
Pull 5 cards
1. your work for the day
2. your home life
3. the unexpected
4. your role/or mood in the day
5. outcome of the day

Now lay this out on your dresser or tarot table anywhere where little curious fingers can't reach.
Look it over and get a general feeling for it.
If you don't have time to write anything down about it thats ok.
Pass by it a few times a day and take a peek at it.
At night or the next morning recap what the cards told you or taught you about that day.
Say it out loud if you want to, or write it down which is better
But we don't always have time for that.
I learned a long time ago if you wait for the perfect moment when all is quiet, and all the work is done, and the kids are in bed, and the hubby is happy, to read the cards well....
You ain't ever going to get to read honey. :)
I've read on top of the washing machine, in the car, on a rock in the garden, while I was making meatloaf.....ect. ect.
So tell me how it goes. OK

Well, my problem is I just don't have time. When I have a little time to spare, I barely have the mental energy to focus on anything more than a TV show. I'd get into more detail but I already probably risk being labelled as a whiner, but to elaborate some, I don't sleep well, and I work goofy hours and for the rest of the month, I don't really have a day off of work. Grr. Is your main source of income being a pro tarot reader? If so, that rocks, I was under the impression that it was next to impossible to make a living from reading, but if I was wrong I will be very happy and try harder to make that happen for myself! :)

I voted several times a week, I do a reading on Monday mornings because I've notice the Monday activities and issues will define the flavor of the week (at job) then another reading if there is something I need insight or fresh ideas, for the course I'm taking I do another 1 or 2 readings in the week to acquantainces or through internet.

Well, I don't do a full reading every day, but most days I do a card of the day, either in the morning (if I remember to) or in the evening (again, if I remember)

I voted less than weekly because, although I do a one card daily draw, I usually try and wait until I know I'm going to have some free time to do a proper reading - I think the last one I did was when hubby went to London for the night just before Halloween... and yes, I was almost tempted to choose "in a lull"...:)

But yes, I'm starting to see what lark is saying is true - sometimes I want to do a reading about something but unless I just draw one card on it when I think of it, it usually doesn't happen. Lot of work right now, not much free time and very few clear surfaces to read on!

I'm still very new at Tarot and I've realised I can get a lot more out of my readings if I write things down - it seems to help my thoughts flow better - but of course this takes AGES :)

Ah, but this morning, this morning is different...I'm off now to try the five card reading lark suggested :)

Kind thoughts,

Pip

I will at least do a 'card of the day' reading, so I voted daily. When I feel I need to do a more full reading I do one, otherwise I try to do a full reading once a week or every other week.

I used to read a lot. But as time has gone on, I hardly read for myself anymore.

I use the cards daily; as part of exercises and study (I suppose you could call that reading) but in terms of long spreads or gaining insight from questions, in recent months, I have been doing that less. Am looking forward to getting to a stage with this deck that I am comfortable to just pull the cards out and read for someone but right now, I am happy just working through them slowly.

I also use the cards daily, although I hardly ever read for myself anymore. But I do read for others on a daily basis, sometimes several times a day, people tend to pop in all the time for a cup of coffee....or so they say...:D, and if they are already there...well, out come the cards and on with the reading...perhaps it's because I live in such a small community where people stop by all the time....
I do try to use the daily card for myself, but this is more as a way of studying the cards and understanding their deeper meaning....I find it very difficult to read for myself in general, so I really should practice more...

I do daily readings, mostly for myself and for close family members.

However, on some days, when I am not as busy, I pull three cards instead of just one.

But in the context of the day, I may have some questions that I need to find answers/insights for, so I pick another reading/spread, for this.

But I voted for once a day, because this is what I mostly do.

Hi there!
I voted daily. I am on maternity leave and I have the time in the evenings after the kids are put to bed and things are tidied up. I will as well pull a card sometime in the day to study further the meanings. I used to feel guilty about not having all the house work done but now I do all things within moderation and my reading has improved. I go back to work next month though and shift work at that. So that will be another test.
Take care,

I am somewhere in between weekly and a lull. I haven't been reading much, but am still studying, at my own leisurely pace. Right now I have XIV Balance from the Goddess Tarot propped up on my desk, and she will stay there until I write a page about her.

Rather than force myself to write a page of gibberish just to meet a deadline, I don't set a deadline. Most times, I spend a week thinking about the card and then write it up in one session, but some cards just take longer.

I voted for several times a week - mainly because I'm getting to know my new Rider Waite and its with me constantly so its easy to shuffle and lay some cards. :) but usually I do daily cards.

I generally reading daily, but using different spreads..one for the learning factor since it's the old...practice often to learn how to ride philosophy, but I wonder on this aspect..if you read daily...is it possible to get the same message over and over to the point that it gets worked to death??

I voted Daily, although I sometimes read more than once daily. I typically pull a card for myself, from some deck or several, each day (as well as a rune). Then, I might have a reading crop up in the course of the day as I'm online, or if friends call, etc.

"Big" readings, to me these are times I read like... at least 3, typically 5+ cards, I do a big reading once or twice (or so, sometimes more) a week. I read for myself this way, as well as others.

I'm a readahalic, I tend to read cards of some type (Tarot or oracles) quite a few times a day either for learning or checking on a feeling I get radomly if it not clear. Plus its my work or what I do for a living.

I voted Daily, sort of taking that as an average. I don't suppose I take draws every single day, but it is very close to that. I also draw 5 cards most mornings: 1. Work 2. Home 3. My role for the day 4. Others 5. Surprises.
I often find the 'Surprises' card to be quite amusing.
Clearly I also do longer readings and occasionally readings for others. I would like to do more of the latter.

Daily. I usually pull a card a day. I Read for myself a couple of times a week with around 3 - 5 cards and then some weeks I'll do a couple of readings for people on-line.

Same here.
I also have conversations with my cards, not using particular spreads (yes I do use those too), but asking questions, and taking the conversations from there. It can get quite heated!

I don't get a chance to read much right now (finals and ALL homework due this thursday), but normally I just read when ever I think I need a little direction in my life. If I bring my cards to school I do three to ten readings a day. If you pull out a deck you immediately draw a crowd and all of them are eager to try it out (It's great when they expect it to just be a game and the reading is dead on). I don't charge yet, and I willingly do readings for random friends just to get more practice at interpreting the cards. My tarot readings scale goes: __^_^__^ Irregular peaks and valleys.

I go through cycles. Sometimes once a day for a while, then I may go for days without reading, but it usually amounts to several times a week, so that's what I answered in the poll.

I've found, for my personal readings, that the most accurate are those I do when I'm drawn to do so, rather than those done on a routine schedule. If the Tarot (or whatever it is that calls--my guides? my higher self?) calls to me, and I'm able to do a reading right then, I find some amazing clarity and accuracy in the reading. OTOH, when I'm obsessing over a personal question or problem and keep reading because of that, all I get is more confusion.

Shalott, is there a place you can leave a spread out for a while so you can look at it when you have a minute or two? Or a place you can keep the cards where you can do a quick reading when the spirit moves you?

I know what you mean about time constraints. I don't have so many of them now, but I used to be away from home a LOT, and so stressed or worn out by the job when I was home that it made taking time just for me nearly impossible. All I can suggest is patience with yourself, and to make some firm demands on others that you have a little uninterrupted time at home. If that's possible. Small children and pets don't take well to this, but . . . they take naps. ;)

I chose weekly, although I want to do daily readings, usually it ends up being 2-3 times during a good week - and usually less, sometimes a lot less when I'm busy at work and at home. In the last two weeks I think I've managed to look through a new deck once, and that was about it.

I also go in cycles, then sometimes do several readings in a day - using different spreads and decks, sometimes for the learning, sometimes for clarity. Often it is a conversation.

I rarely do one-card readings, and have never done daily readings. I'm usually looking for directions in different areas of my life, so I enjoy larger spreads, which are often very meditative for me.

To answer your question, no I don't have any space to leave cards out! HA I wish I had a digital camera so I could SHOW you guys (it's darkly comical) the space I live in. Actually, I don't even read in my place anymore, I go into the party room in my building, or rely on slow Sat nights at work.

This is in the boat I'm in now: when I come home from work, I check my email, play here a little bit, then fall asleep in my recliner. Hopefully though, after the holidays when I'm no longer on 7 days a week anymore (since I'm "chief" fill in, lucky me) I'd be very happy to do 2 - 3 readings a week. Honestly the point of the poll wasn't to whine, but just to see where I was at, thinking I may be WAY far behind, but compared to others who work outside the home, I see that I'm really not, so that's comforting! I think I read more than I think I read, if that make sense! :) I should get in the card-a-day habit. More than that isn't realistic right now...but if I start figuring out how to squeeze in 1-a-day when I'm busy, it'll seem easier when I'm not...so I tell myself!

I make as much in a week as I used to with my part time job. (most weeks)
If I was living alone I could probably make it with the tarot and a part time position.
The trouble with tarot is that it can be sporadic.....
A ton of clients one week and a dry spell the next.
So as the only means of income it seems to me that it would be very hard to support yourself on that alone.
But some people have done it, so it's not impossible.

I am unfortunately in a lull/barely reading right now, but not by choice. I just finished my first semester of law school, which was time-consuming enough, and now I am in Law School Exam Hell, studying my brains out. I won't be finished until the 23rd, and I go back January 11th. My last reading was on Samhain, but it was a big 12 card year-ahead reading. My last reading before THAT was in August before I started school. Yikes! But regardless of how much studying is taking me over, I'm definitely doing another reading on Yule. Hopefully I now know how to better budget my time so next semester I can put in the time I need to do well in school but still be able to do tarot. Because I feel like part of my life is missing when I can't do readings.

I votred "less than weekly," because I may not read for a couple of weeks, then do six or seven in a week.

I don't draw cards for myself as frequently as I did.

I forget, but I do find that quite helpful as both a study tool and a guidance.

I had to vote several times a week.
I was pulling a daily card for a while, but this close to Christmas it is just way to hectic for me at home and at work.
I was getting my daily card in before work, but I seem to be rushing around far too much in the mornings lately.

Usually around this time of year, someone is in some sort of crisis and requires a reading, in which case I have to set aside time for them.

Lark your amazing.. I either load myself up with too many projects or I am lousy at time management. ( I am thinking overload.. I just piled another last minute sewing project on my plate to get done before Christmas...lol)

I voted for once a week, although I probably should have put several times a week, because I usually do manage to do some kind of daily reading every few days. I started out with the five-card reading that's been described in this thread, and when that proved to be too time-consuming I switched to a three-card spread. Lately I'm lucky if I can pull just one card. Blame it all on the two-year-old! At first I was putting the little bugger in his high chair with some Cheerios and then sneaking into my bedroom to do a reading, but he's learned how to climb out. He seems to have tarot radar--he materializes the second I try to slide my deck out of the box. And he loves to snatch a card from a spread and then have me chase him through the house, while he's shrieking like a madman. Not very conducive to maintaining concentration. Between him and the older ones and my darling husband, it's very hard to carve out tarot time. The other day my deck and I absconded to the library for a few hours alone. It was heaven! But doesn't happen anywhere near enough.

Oh well, he won't be two forever, right.....?

Blessings,
Denise

I used to read a few times a week at least, having one night devoted completely to tarot and nothing else. Now, I haven't read in a month, Im in a lull and I try not to let it get me down. Readings in this state wouldn't be worthwhile anyways, and I must keep my patience and trust that my tarot diligence will come back to me when the time is right.

I put weekly, but I tend to do these mega-gigantic readings that take about one week to complete, some up to 15 questions long. When I'm done I tend to start the next. So I guess you could say daily too. LOL Once in a while I actually take 2-3 days off for good behavour.

OK, so I'm addicted. :-)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is unable to read with the kids around. Frankly, they're like little nuclear reactors- so much energy spills off them, and I'm so connected to/aware of them, that there's just no way I could read properly. :D
I read when they are at school, or at a friend's house.

I'm trying to do dailies several times a week, and at least one bigger reading once or twice a week.

Though I would read daily or at lest several times a week, I recently fell into a major reading lull during exam time. Exams are evil evil evil things...but I didn't just back off from my decks...my pooor lonely decks...during exam time. I went into sleep-mode after exams (holidays! :)) and am only just emerging from my beautiful rest...which has fuelled my need to return to the cards. I've kind of gone through a "growing" stage through which I intend to emerge a slightly different and better person.
Who finds it hard to get out of a lull? Because it is hard- especially at this time of year.

I read more than once daily. :)

I always find time to test out new spreads, read for myself, and occassionally read for others everyday. I think I'm addicted (and that's a bad thing?)!

On weekends, I try out a large spread. I find it hard to do on weekdays because large spreads really exhaust me. :/

I read multiple times daily. I do a six card read in the morning as well as a three card read for the workbook I am working with. Throughout the day I may do a one card pull to help me throughout the day. I plan on doing a nightly reading to help me sort through the days events. Kind of like a recap of the day.

I voted weekly, because I read for other people in the reading exchange section.
I rarely read for myself ... maybe once a month a the most ... occasionally I will draw a daily card if I have enough time :)

WalesWoman
12-11-2005, 19:10
I'm in a lull, I don't feel like analyzing myself, have no great worries or questions and unless I sign up for an exchange... haven't read much at all lately. At this point I'm not worried about the future, so am not concerned with finding out what it holds for me. This is just SO out of character!

Which is a vast change, to what I used to do... several readings a week atleast, if not everyday and then I was doing atleast one or two or more. I was a spread freak for a while, I'd have to try out every cool, interesting spread that crossed my path. If I wasn't searching out spreads I was making them... I haven't even done that much lately.

So if I'm ever to read more than once in awhile, it's because I offer to do readings or am asked to... so I guess I should make myself more available... and come out of the Tarot closet and go public.

I'm satisfied with the decks I have and haven't even been tempted to look at a new one... just wait until December when we go in for our annual Christmas shopping trip. It's become a my newest tradition to get myself a new deck. :) And then I've got to do a lot of readings to get the hang of it.

At this point I'm not worried about the future, so am not concerned with finding out what it holds for me.

I used to be like that for a long time. But for me I was more afraid of the answers so I never asked the questions. As my development in oracle and Tarot reading develops I am becoming more willing to ask questions of the cards. For now I stick with learning about the next 24 hours. I haven't started asking questions about anything more in the future than that.

Annabelle
12-11-2005, 22:07
I answered that I read several times per week.

Typically I do one or two readings for others in the Reading Exchange, and then I often end up doing a reading for myself, most weeks. Nothing big, usually . . . I only do the "big overview" types of spreads for myself on rare/special occasions. But I keep a deck in my desk at work mostly for the purpose of being able to do spur of the moment, 3 card, "prevailing wind" sorts of spreads, just to see where a particular situation is headed or what type of action I might take in a situation.

Some weeks I don't feel like reading at all, while other times I wish I could read for others all day long every day. Depends on my mood, really.

I voted weekly although I think it is a bit more. I try not to read too much at the moment and use cards more for contemplation/meditation/study, I am in a bit of a lull as far as reading is concerned, and I want to gain more insight in another way.
When I feel like reading I still do, I have no time frame that but it is sort of weekly...or a few times weekly.
