When it comes to tarot books. I have a few by Nancy Garen. I like the way she explains things. And I am always looking for more books on tarot. I am just wondering about some of your favorite authors.

i want to recommend Isabel Radow Kliegman and her book "Tarot and the tree of life - finding everyday wisdom in the minor arcana"

she takes a tricky subject (tarot and the tree of life) and writes about so it is easy to understand and entertaining at the same time.

ok, so she don't like the queen of wands much - that is my main objection. but she is funny and witty and a good teacher.

i also like Pamela Eakins book on the tarot of the Spirit a lot.
(needless to say i simply adore the spirit deck)

This is a really helpful book -- it was probably what started the end of my Minors Stupidity (patent pending). The one complaint I have is that she doesn't like Swords much. She does a good job of finding usefulness in them despite that, though. It's also a good introduction to the way the Tree of Life works, especially for someone like me, who just wants to know the practical bits.

I practically worship Rachel Pollack. Everything I've ever read by her regarding tarot, even blurbs, is fantastic. She happens to be a terrific fiction author too... and comic-book author...

...the anonymous author of:

Meditations on the Tarot

which is apparently coming back in print (with an index!) in a few months!

I don't really have many tarot books. Embarrassing as it is, I like Lisa Leonard, and Arlene Tognetti, authors of The Complete Idiots Guide to Tarot. I do not have a deck by her yet, but Mary K Greer looks like a great author. I plan on getting her book "The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals" It looks very well written.

I have just received news that Meditations on the Tarot has just been republished, ahead of schedule, by Tarcher. The US price is said to be around $15 at on-line booksellers... (just a reminder that using the Aeclectic Amazon or other link will support Solandia and this site if intending to order it).

French, in 1967 (I have been told, but not seen, that the French is illustrated with the Wirth deck, despite the fact that the author clearly indicates the Marseilles in his work).

Though the book was first published in German translation!

I really like Joan Bunning. Not sure yet about Mary K. Greer (after two chapters of Tarot of Your Self I still can't decide whether I like it or not), haven't started reading 78 Degrees of Wisdom yet...

Too many tarot books, not enough time... ;)

I just got a couple of new Tarot books: Tarot for a New Generation by Janina Renee, and The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals by Mary K. Greer. Both are great Books!! The book by Rebee is amazing insomuch that it gave me interpretations that I never in a million years would have considered. I plan on getting her Tarot: An Everyday Guide. 78 Degrees of Wisdom is still on my wich list, as well as a slew of others!

I've got Tarot Reversals on it's way to me (via Amazon) and just picked up 78 Degrees of Wisdom earlier this week. I can't wait to get some reading done this weekend! Thanks, Darryn, for letting us know that Greer's book is good - I can't wait to get my copy.

Tarot Reversals is one of the best tarot books ever, IMNSHO. I'm really eager to read some more Janina Renee... maybe once my ship comes in? That's the problem with these threads... there's always something good being recommended! ;)

I mention in an above post that my favourite book on Tarot is Valentin Tomberg's Meditations on the Tarot (http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=31836#post31836)...

What is even more astounding is the reading of it in the original, for a number of minor points which I wanted to question have there been resolved!

The English version, by the way, is utterly superb, a few simple words left 'untranslated' in future editions would make the book, in my eyes, even more brilliant (is that possible ??).

So - are there other authors others prefer apart, or as well, as those already mentioned?

now wait jmd, i always thought it was from an anonymous author..? or is Tomberg's the publisher? (I admit my high ignorance on the matter... i am lazy too, i could find out myself so easily, but i guess you will answer with a few top detailed info in addition (such as the non translated words in the english version) so why bother }) ;) ...)

Hey, I was there, and I agree with you! I got a RWS deck and "Mastering the Tarot" by Eden Gray in 1978, and I love that book. I recently got a new copy, in fact: my original copy is so worn from age and use that I was afraid it'd fall to pieces at any moment.

"Mastering the Tarot", along with another Eden Gray book ("The Tarot Revealed") and one other book by an author I've forgotten, were part of a now-defunct RWS box set that friends of mine got. Their purchase of that set started them, plus two other friends and me, on the road to learning about Tarot. I get a kick out of just seeing Eden Gray mentioned on here, since there are so many other authors that people here favor.

Joan Bunning

Robert M. Place is one of my favorite modern Tarot authors and artists. He has a wonderful way of expressing and explaining mystical concepts in a clear, concise, informed, inviting and inspiring manner.

His recent companion book for "The Buddha Tarot" is an excellent exploration and synthesis of mystical and Tarot themes from both the Eastern and Western worlds. One of the best Tarot books of the year, or any year.

Anything by Rachel Pollack is worth reading - if only because her style of writing is so easy to read.
Also reaaly like Tarot for Yourself by Mary K. Geer - though I have only read the 1st 3 chapters. I have also read The Complete Idiots Guide to Tarot (it was my first book on the subject) and found it great for begginers.

I really like Geraldine Amaral/Nancy Brady Cunningham of Tarot Celebrations and Cait Johnson of Tarot For Every Day. I also like the author of the Fey tarot, Ricardo Minetti.

Already mentioned: Pamela Eakins (Tarot of the Spirit-book), Janine Renee (Tarot Your Everyday Guide).

I would like to add:
Teresa Michelsen - Designing Your Own Tarot Spreads
she helped me so much to use tarot for my own specific questions instead of doing the same standard spreads all the time.

Gail Fairfield - I have both:
Everyday Tarot (card meanings based on numerology)
Choice-Centered Relating and the Tarot (she explains how she uses tarot in her practice as a psychologist).
Not a complete guide for beginners, but a refreshing look at the cards.

My favorite one at the moment is Tarot for The Green Witch by Ann Moura it is fantastic she has matched every card in pairs I have never seen a book before that has done this, so if you wanted to know what the 10 swords meant with say 5 wands she has put; Able defense of ideas proven in competitions/tests, fresh start after struggle. She say's you should read every card in pairs but also pay attention to the position in the spread, she also say's reading in this way (pairs) you could do away with spreads all together but that it is more visualy plesant for the querent to do a spread and yourself! I like all the other authors mentioned before too. Happy Reading!

I have one of the Green Witchcraft books by Ann Moura and she also has a chapter on tarot in it. She explains it all so well I think I may want to get the Tarot for a Green Witch as well :)
Think I also want to have Meditations on the Tarot...sounds like something very different and something I should at least try.

At a suggestion from more experienced reader I picked up the 2005 Tarot Reader by LLewellyn. The articles are wide ranging, short, and thought provoking by authors such as Mary K. Greer, Mark McElroy, Elizabeth Hazel, Thalassa, and several others. Topics touch on all sorts of tips to enchance your overall tarot experience. I've found it very informative.
