Well in a previous thread I wrote about my frustrating experience with The lovers. I finally was able to finish it and took a photo of it for you all to see and judge.
I work in oil paint and prefer to use vibrant collors. The atmosphere of the cards is more importand to me than actual symbolism. I like my cards to be of use during intuitive reading and association.
For the lovers I choose to depict Paris in a loving embrace with Helena/Aphodite aka LOVE. He could have power, knowledge but choose love. And thats what the lovers is all about for me. A choice from the bottom of the heart.
I hope this comes trough in the painting.
So here it is, I hope you like it and my style of painting. I realise it is not a traditional tarot style.

BTW it was based on an old scetcj I posted here a long time ago:http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/2141725/

And here is the second finished card; The ace of cups.
The new age kind of feel surprises me somewhat since it is not my usual style at all but it just came out this way. I guess it is fitting for the ace of cups though.
I depicted a golden chalise in the shape of the female reproductive organs to remble the sacred life vessel of the grail.
Out of it springs hope in the shape of a dove, who carries a cell filled with the promiss of new life.
It was somewhat inspired by the ace of cups from the Crowley Thoth

WOW!
You're an excellent artist. I see what you mean about expressing the atmosphere in your painting. They are fabulous, Lovers is wonderful, and the colour is so unusual, it depicts passion to me. I love it.
I was thinking the Ace was reminiscent of the Thoth deck......then I read your post. :) Again, I love the vibrant colours.
I can't wait to see more.
Fantastic cards!
That lovers card is incredibly intense, I can feel the emotion from it.
The ace is awesome too. Love the colors.
Great job. We want more!

I really love your style! Your art is evocative, fluid... I like the slightly dreamy surreal quality as well!
Your lovers does have a passionate vibe! But then so does your Ace of Cups! The ace really does portray a feminine sensibility!
Really nice work!
Do we get to see the other aces that came from the failed Lovers?
I would love to see more of your work!
And don't fixate on how many you still have to paint...believe me, that thinking will make you crazy!!!...Instead focus on what you have already accomplished, and what you are working on now!!!
You have a great talent for this!

Thnx for the kind remarks! I really appreciate it and any comments are welcom, including the not so kind ones.
Chronata: The other aces are still just scetches but I will post them as soon as they are in paint. The next card will most likely be the empress though. You're gonna love her! ... I hope...

Youre lovers and ace has a good combination of literal and surreal, which is nice because they can extend the imagination in many ways: to the read world and to the mind (mainly emotions) Cant wait to see more!
temperlyne,
a wonderful artist you are - if I can judge by the sketch and painting of your lovers card. I really like it!
Unfortunately, I cannot seem to load the Ace of Cups, so I can't talk about it.

Since it takes me some time to complete the cards I thought I'd post some of my scetches for you to see. There just raw pencil drafts so nothing outstanding, but it might give you an idea of what I'm working on.
I hope to post the next finished card this weekend.

I'm not sure if this is my final version of the empress, she might need some more shading. I'm working in oils for the first time and am still figuring out what is possible. I'm also working larger than I'm used to (50 cm x 65 cm) because I'm giving these paintings to friends to hang on their walls. The fact that I'm working larger has some effects on how they will appear as cards eventually, I still have to figure out what works best for small cards.
but anyway, here is the 3rd card, a redo of an old acrylic painting I posted here a while ago: The empress!

pregnant with the universe and new life, she represents the powerfull combination of motherhood and sensuality.

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the positive response I've been given. It will help me stay motivated and keep working on the cards eventhough I don't have much time to spare.
I realise that my artwork is not the best, detailed or most subtle in the world and that my symboligy is not traditional for tarot, but I just want to create something that speaks to me instinctively. I would love it if my cards speak to some of you as well. Judging by the decks that are most popular, my style is will not please many readers but I do hope to please some.
It is soo much fun to paint. I haven't been creative in a long time and this project gives me an excuse to make time for it. I'm off to work on death!

I had a hard time with this one, I just couldn't decide on the color scheme. usually I pick the colors before I start painting but with this one I just started.
so her she is, miss death!

I'm not sure if I should explain the image right away, but if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them. I hope you can see death in this image.
(Pretty soon I will have to start another thread since the title is not apropriate anymore! Ah well lets see who's next.... the hanged man?)

Wow. The Death Card is really amazing.
What a bold choice!
At first glance, I thought it was a little creepy...but the more I looked at it, the more beautiful it became...there's a great interconnectedness with all the parts of the image.
It really does speak "Death" to me...even my reaction to it seems to gel with the concept of death. (that uneasiness at first...and the beauty that comes from really getting to know it.)
I love your style of art. And I can relate to the feeling you have about your style...that it may not be to everyone's liking. I have had similar feelings about my own art, because it doesn't look like most deck art out there.
I say, don't worry about what others think!
Your fans will find you!
I certainly have!

Chronata you are simply too kind! Thnx very much for the wonderful respons! I'm so glad you like my artwork, as I do like yours. We both seem to have a love for color!
As for the death card, I never meant for her to be scary, but she IS death...
Th roads signify that all routes lead to death, but that through her we are transformed, given back to entropi so to speak.
Strangly when I finished the card I got the bad news of my best feline friend having cancer, I keep focussing on the end of our time together but maybe I should look at my own card some more....

i can't believe I didn't see this thread until now! Your cards are gorgeous! I can't wait to see more of them. My favorite so far is the Hanged Man, which is a huge deal because that is usually one of my least favorite cards in the deck.
I love them all though. Death is just so evocative, the Lovers is gorgeous, etc, etc, etc.
I'll be eagerly awaiting your next card. :)
Temperlyne!!! Your artwork is beautiful. The hangedman is incredible. I love the runes concept.

I'm so glad you liked it! Nobody around me actually knows the tarot so they can't really judge my paintings for their usefullness as cards. Thats so great about this place!
I'm really bursting with ideas at the moment and find it very hard to pick the next card, I just want to do them all at once! I'm not sure If I should finish the majors first but I might because I like the idea of doing the minors in order. I'm currently finishing one a week so it will take me at least 1,5 years to finish it, but thats ok I guess because it is a very fun and rewarding process.
At the moment I have no plans for publishing my cards, I've only done 5 so far! I would in the end love a copy myself. I imagine it must be amazing to do readings with your own cards.
Anyway, I'm off to work on the magician!
temperlyne
16-03-2005, 20:43
I managed to finish another one.
The magician to me represents creativity. He has the power to create matter out of the void with his own hands and inspiration.
I based him on an old acrylic painting I posted here long ago, which was based on a painting by one of my favourite artists: Jean Delville. I couldn't find it on the net anymore.. but I'll keep trying an will post a link as soon as I find one.
I'm not completely happy with the end result and I might redo him one day, but it gives an idea of what my intention is for this card. Powerful and masculin.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/16158770/
I realise there will be a lot of nudity in my major arcana. I do not intend to create an erotic deck, but to me the characters from the major arcana transcent time and the ordinary. If I were to cloth them, the style of dress would indicate a time period and status.
The people in the court cards will be more human and easier to identify with.

That's a great idea I think. It will be a very unique idea, and will certainly make the major arcana stand out among the minors.
I can't wait to see how your devil contrasts with this magician.

16-03-2005, 21:29

Good work.
My deck has 2 cards(including nudity) but neither, didn't intend 'erotic' at all:)

16-03-2005, 22:23
I agree that my magician resembles the traditional devil somewhat. I connect the magician to the celtic horned one, the male god, the king stag. That's why I gave him antlers. He to me is the potent god of creation, of inpuls. He doesn't look very nice but he is in the process of creation, very focussed.
I'm currently between two options for my devil card. I'm not sure which wil make the best impression. But I think I might go for a non traditional version, without a devil/demon figure. after all it is man who created sin and we create our own bondages.
The next card will most likely be the high priestess though, I'm going to try to create them in order.

I guess he reminds me of the Thoth concept of the devil as a creative force, rather than the RWS one of bondage etc. It is interesting that the Thoth devil could be conceived as quite similiar to the RWS magician. It says something about the difference between the two deck creators to me, and makes coming cards of your deck exciting. I'm looking forward to the High Priestess.

I had all kinds of wild ideas for the High priestess... I know it is the favourite card of most readers and that made me a bit nervous. I thought about doing something spectacular and pagan goddes like, but in the end she turned out very simple. I like her that way, she is a very sober lady, serene.
I hope you like her too, let me know!

Wow Temperlyne sign me up. Your art is amazing. I don't think that the nudity of the cards are at all an issue. It didn't even really register with me that they were nude as the images are just calling out to me as a whole and not segmented. Once again wow your deck is fantstic.

Thnx for the lovely comments! Though initially this deck is for myself, it is very encouriging to hear that others enjoy the cards as well.
I wanted to finish the remaining majors in order but seem to get stuck on the emperor... I know what I want him to "say" , I'm just wrestling with the composition. So as not to waist my inspiration I'm going to finish the 4 aces first.
In the mean time I'm also working on a website to put my finished cards. I'm just pondering over a good name for my deck..I was thinking about just naming it temperlyne tarot. But temperlyne doesn't really mean anything, except to me. temperline however does exist. Do you think that might work? Temperline Tarot
A temperline is the marking on the side of blades that are hardened by reheating and cooling in oil (tempering). And I like the idea of a forged deck, besides my art usually shows lots of "lines".

Hi Temerlyne,
I love the cards you have done so far! Beautiful colors and they are so expressive, not stodgy at all. I like the idea of calling it Temperlyne (Temperline?) I think it's a nice name. I don't think it matters if your name is different or if the art is different than the norm, a little variety is a good thing! I think it is going to be an original and beautiful deck. Good luck with it!

Oh My! This is such an honour, It was your magnificant and original artwork that inspired me to create my own deck Marie!
So Temperlyne Tarot it will be! The website might take a while, My lover is helping me but I'm not much help... my computer skills are completely nonexistent.
Anyway, I had to redo my original scetches for the aces because those were on canvas board and not only does the texture of the canvas show, I can't afford to do all my cards on canvas...I'm just a poor vetereinary student. (I don't even get a discount on my art supplies because I'm not in an art course..) The ace of cups had allready christalised into its final version so that one was easiest to redo. I changed it a bit, making the image a bit stronger I think.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/16485094/
Next will be the ace of pentacles, though I'm not sure I want to call them pentacles. I don't like coins either, but discs seems almost to easy... Ah well, since I dont have borders yet it doesn't really matter.

I finished the ace of pents, but it took me a long time. I tried to give it an earthen feel but I think I should redo this one some day. I feel the image is not as strong as I would have liked, probably because I rushed it in the end...
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/16704388/
The minors are going to be even harder to do than the majors for some reason...But they do proove to be a chalange, which is great because I use this project to improve my overal artistic skills.
I was planning on doing the other 2 aces, but a great idea for the strenght card came up. I just had to abandon the "order" again. Maybe it is better to just follow my urges with this.
I hope to be back soon to show you the strenght card!
I think you are making a wonderfully expressive deck - I love your Empress card - its really sums up to me what the Empress means - fertility, the Mother, protecting. And your Priestess card - again very easy to see the wisdom, secrecy and mistery but well hidden behind the veil - Actually I've liked all of your cards but I picked on the Empress and Priestess because they are special to me. :)
And the colours you are using, vibrant but not over-bright - it does have the feel of the Thoth about it - I can't wait to see your other cards, and to see what direction you take the Minors and Courts. :)
Forgot to mention the name - Temperlyne Tarot - it does have a nice ring to it.

I'm a bit stuck at the moment, I'm working on strength but can't seem to finish it. I had a lot of inspiration but now it as a bit wailing... But than my lover surprised me last night. He had printed and laminated some of the finished cards and WOW WOW! It is just so amazing to hold your own cards, shuffle them en spread them. It made me see why I began this process and inspired me all over again. I would suggest to everyone making their own deck to print and laminate a few of the finished ones to just feel the magic of holding you own cards..!

Thank you so much Emily! It is my intention to create an expressive deck with pictures that just speak for themselves. I want my cards to be simpel and effective. I love symbolic images but sometimes tarot cards tend to get a bit cluthered or artifical in an attemp to put as much symbology in it as possible. I hope I can avoid that and keep the images clean, clear and expressive.
I hope to finish something again soon!

Thats fantastic Temperlyne! I really like your take on the card. The snake looking so menacing between her posed hands is really striking.

Initially I was not going to publish this deck, but now I'm not so sure anymore. Offcourse I still have less than 10 cards finished so thinking about publishing seems a bit premature... If I'm honest though, I would love to have my deck published one day! (who wouldn't) But before I seriously start thinking about publishing I need to paint a lot more cards!
Similia... I never noticed all the redheads untill you mentioned it... How silly of me. It's probably because red just contrasts nicely... It was never my intention!

I wish I had started the process long before I had finished my Majors...because there is a lot to think about, and a lot that can frustrate you, if you are not prepared.
And I so hope you do some sort of publishing for these incredible images, Temperlyne!
I really must have these as a working deck! I already know they would be a pure delight to read with!
Strength is just fantastic. You get both a sense of the kinetic energy, and a sense of the calm control, all in the same image.

The whole publication process sort of freaks me out, I can't imagine everything that has to be dealt with... And I really don't look forward to dragging my pictures around, hoping someone will like them enough. I'm just not much of a saleswomen. But I suppose you are right, it is never too early to start thinking about it. I'll have to go through some old threads about publishing to make up my mind about what my options are..
All the great responses that I'm getting here really do make me less nervous about getting "out there" with my deck! It really means a lot to me..

Temperlyne....WOW!!! Your work is fantastic! I think all the cards look great, but I especially love the Aces (in particular the Ace of Cups) and the Strength card. In fact, that's one of the best Strength cards I've ever laid eyes on.
I really hope that even if you decide not to pursue having the deck commercially published that you will at least consider self-publishing a limited number of copies. I would LOVE to buy a copy--even of a majors-only set, even if it was expensive--if you ever decide to make it available.

i finished the firts court card... I tried to find a way to make them more human and still have the same feel as the rest of the cards... not an easy task!
For this page of pents/coins I was inspired by the kore statues of the ancient Greek.
To me the page is the server of the suits power, they work for the element and offer bits of it to the querents.

Funny that you consider my page of pents a princess, it never crossed my mind that she was royal! I do intend to make all the pages women to balance the genders and young to signify that they are not in control and do not yet understand their suits energy.
a short intro in my ideas of the courts:
The pages are the servers and servents of the suits energy.
The knights are driven by that energy and can ride its powers.
the queens are the ones that bask in the suits energy and emotion, they emerge themselves in it.
The kings are in control of the power.
I'll work some more on the courts later, the next card will be the last ace, the sword.

I like this a lot. :)
I’ve found the thread just some minutes ago, and after looking at the cards I’m in the need to say I really, really like your Magician and Strength. They are so magnetic… The concept in those is fantastic! The Aces don’t convince me, though.
I like your painting style and I’m waiting to see the next cards soon!
I also love most of your cards, especially strenght and the magician! Very different and yet perfectly matching the meaning of the cards in my opinion

I hope you guys didn't ive up on me and my deck! I'm still working on it!
The last ace (swords) is almost finished but I managed to truly finish the queen of pentacles/coins.
To me she is a woman who submerges in her earthen element, and the earth embraces her.
I hope this image works for you, but please let me know!

Speaking for myself...I am never giving up on this deck!!!!
In fact, if you want someone to periodically nag you to finish cards, I can offer that service! (but only if you do the same for me! :))
If you are wondering if the Queen works...then I would have to say, most definately!
Wow. She works on many levels, for me. And yes she is very much the one who embraces her element of Earth.
I have one teensy little thing...not really a problem...but I would have liked to see just a hint of green in there somewhere.
Because as I see her being very earthy in those colors....my initial response was more of fire, due to all that warmth.
But that's just me. :) Don't change nothing unless you feel it is necessary!
I love every single image you have shared so far!

thank you for your support Chronata! It really is a wonderful help in keeping me on track with my deck.

Because as I see her being very earthy in those colors....my initial response was more of fire, due to all that warmth.
I usually select the colors for the cards before I start, and for the queen of coins I choose brown and green. However, I never got the urge to use the green. I thought about adding some before I finished it, but decided against it because it would feel artificial to me.
I'm sure that once I finish the queen of wands that it will be very clear who is who!
Right now I'm working on my website, which I find very frustrating! My computer skills are nonexistant alas...
I also hope to finish the emperor this week. I am starting the final stage of vetschool next week and my time will be extremely limeted then... I hope to be able to at least finish one card a month...

I will repeat this until you agree ;) })

you HAVE to publish that deck. I am in constant withdrawal, waiting for new cards of yours. And that queen of pents is absolutely delicious. (I find myself in her somehow ;) )

PS - do not take the threat of torture too seriously though - I know worse methods, like pestering you after every card! ;)

oh my temperlyne! I have been looking through your beautiful cards, as I have not seen quite a few of them since I visited last and have to say again - what a talent for colour you have! There are so many that I like but I think your Strength card is a such wonderful interpretation and a very powerful image - and stands out for me :)
Also 'Temperlyne Tarot' definitely does have a good ring to it and I like your explanation of 'temperline' that fits with this.
Best of luck with your vet school studies and I shall look forward to seeing more of your lovely cards and especially the website where we will be able to see them altogether, side by side.

AAAAAHHHH please Simone don't ever joke about that!. If only you knew how sensitive the soles of my feet are.... I can actually tickle myself there!
I promiss I will think about publishing... when the cards are done ;)
CreativeFire - thanks a lot! Strength is my favourite as well. It always was my favourite card of the tarot, I guess because she reminds me both of Potnia theron (the mistress of wild beast, as an aspect of artemis) and Androcles. I have become to associate strength with my dream of becomming a vet. Every day I go to college I am greeted by a huge image of Androcles taking the thorn out of the paw of a lion, an image that resembles the traditional strength image very well.
The emperor is standing here besides me on my esel, and he is demanding that I finish him. I guess I'd better take his orders!

The emperor will never be my favourite card in the deck, he reminds me too much of constitutionalised power. His presence demand authority without showing any aggression.
For my deck I was inspired by Gilgamesh, one of the oldest emperor figures of mankind. So thats why his hairstyle is a bit unusual.

Wow.
I find myself saying that a lot when it comes to your cards, Temperlyne!
Emperor has never been my favorite either...but then I know I have control issues with dominant men! LOL!
Your Emperor is amazing (as usual!)
I love that you cannot see his expression...his expansive size and posture really say it all!
And I really like the black and white images...like building blocks, or skyscrapers...or pieces in a game of Risk.
Wonderful, wonderful wonderful!!!!!

Chronata you are such a generous and sweet person! You manage to capture that disposition wonderfully in your deck and I'm truly honoured that you seem to like my cards.
I finally was able to finish the last of the aces. I didn't want to have the usual associations with symbolic swords like excallibur so I based my sword on Musashi's katana. The two raven are Odin's companions hugin and munin, thought and memory.
The picture doesn't show the colors too well but you can get the idea.

I like a lot this Ace, temperlyne!!
The lightning, the perspective of the sword looking bright as if it was light itself, and also the ravens. Looks very powerful.

I like your art a lot. :) I love the colours and the way you've captured the essesence of the card.
I just have to ask though: where's his face? I just know somehow he's got something to say, but I'm not sure I'll be able to hear if I don't see his face.

Maybe make it an aeclectic exclusive....
Nice work, my favourite would have to be Strength.
Got some great concepts there; the Hanged One perspective is excellent and I really like the Lovers composition.

I didn't want to show the face of the emperor, because I wanted him to be above the reader, more archetypical and less personal. Those who have the power in this world are either anonymous or never show us their real face. To me the emperor is not the kind of man to have a conversation with, his presence should be enough to persuade you to abide his bidding. I realise that by portraying him this way, the aspect of a loving father with whom you can have a personal relationship gets lost a bit. I hope this is not too disturbing, or too far off from what the crad means to most readers.

Thanks for this. :) Your explaination makes it clear for me.
It's your deck and your vision - you needn't worry if it disturbs others or even if the meaning is too far away for most readers, as long as you can connect with the image.

I can't believe I almost missed the Ace!
Holy Cow! Another incredible card!
The way the sword blade comes at you in that inky blue darkness...it reminds me of a silver road that needs to be journeyed.
I have one katana in my sword collection...and it looks exactly like this one! :D
And I have a personal attraction to Odin's ravens. They are part of my everyday mythology.
man, I swear...I have such a connection to your images, Temperlyne...that I sometimes think you are making this deck just for me! :D
Eagerly anticipating the next one!

Wonderful! :)

Well the 2 of discs didn't turn out the way I liked it so I'm still working on that one. In the mean time I painted my version of the star. Symbol of hope after emerging from the night sea.
The picture doesn't really do the painting justice but it gives you an idea of the card. I hope you like it!

It is always a pleasant surprise to log in and see a new Temperlyne tarot creation!
And...This card is stunning!
I absolutely adore it!
The star has always been my favorite card in any deck...and here she is just so perfect! Her sinuey form showing grace, and the bubbles! A brilliant representation of innocence, hope...and play.
Are you getting sick of me drooling over these yet? :D
I relate very well to this card...as I do with all the cards you have done so far. You have yet to make a wrong step. And I am thinking that there won't be a single image in this deck that I don't love!
Nice to see you back into it!
Wow.
I really like your style of art. Its beautiful. The water looks great. So far the card I like the best is the Empress. I like the stylistic embryo, very cool.
I love the new card! The bubbles are just perfect, the figure is great, and the water looks so, so...I don't know...watery! :)
This may be one of my favorite Stars even though I've never held the deck in my hands!

to me, the deck seems like a cross between the mary-el and the thoth. I love the images. The one thing im not liking...
on the court cards, they just look like images. Like women dancing. The queen of pents looks awesome, but she is centralized, almost like an icon. The others are too scenic and not symbolic to me. idk, i love the art, but I would like to see courts that are consistent with the rest of the deck.

I have to agree with you on the minors... Somehow I can't get them to have the seem feeling as the majors... I'll keep on trying to make them better. The majors sort of paint themselves, I haven't had that luck with the minors. It might also be a factor that I paint the majors on a larger scale, maybe I could try doing that with the minors as well. Its just a shame that art supplies ar so expensive...
Ahh well all the support of this forum and the donation of a subscription inspired me to paint again! The first layer of paint on the universe is drying right no

Now, I have to disagree...I love your Court cards so far...and I find that they are very consistant with your style.
I don't think that the majors have to look exactly like the minors anyway.
If YOU feel that they need to be changed, then I can respect that...but I love them as they are.
Coming from a fan...PLEASE...don't change a thing!!!! :)

Well I'm a bit stuck with the world right now. I hope to finish it in the course of next week, provided I can find the time.... In the mean time I have uploaded a picture of the painting at this point. It is not finished at all, and my paintings tend to change a lot in the final stages, but I just wanted to show that I'm painting again.
This card is the most traditional I've yet done, and the idea has been in my head ever since I first saw Delville's painting; love of souls. My painting is heavily inspired by that piece of art.

I Know it's not yet finished, but WOW!!!
I have a feeling this will be my favorite in the deck. I like the lady in this image a LOT, and love how the male is cradling and supporting her.....the way the two of them touch, and interlace their arms is poetic.
so glad you are working on this again!!

So far...so Fab!
What a gorgeous image, Temperlyne!
I agree with Astrid O...there is something I love about the supportive, loving and almost protective pose of the Male figure...
And yet it is also sensual.
I can't wait to see the finished painting.
It's really a beautiful and graceful composition.
(Going to research Delville's work now... I love to see the muses that inspire other artists!)

well.... I'm almost ashamed to post another image after such a long pauze. I got so caught up in work and study that the painting of the world I started on, started gathering dust. (literally....) Last night I couldn't stand it anymore and finished the painting, time or no time, dust or no dust.
So here is my version of the universe, inspired by Crowleys genious card and a painting by Jean Delville.
To me the universe is about finding your place in the grand order, beeing completed, dualities that merge into one. I hope this image will show that, and more.

Owww its just so fantastic to get such positive reactions! I love showing my cards to people who actually know tarot, it is very different from trying to explain the images to friends and family who aren't familliar with tarot.
At the moment I am making around 80 hours a week, devided between internships and work.... needless to say my free time is limited. I was getting very frustrated by the fact I had no time to express my self in a creative way. I the comming weeks I do not have to work nightshifs anymore, so I'm hoping to be able to devote more time to tarot and painting. I still have to put up a decent website, I've started painting on the hermit and want to finish this one without it gathering dust, and there is a draft for the fool waiting to be painted... ow and my lover needs a little bit of my time too! I'm off and hope to do at least some of the above this weekend.

The one thing I learnt from making my own deck is that time is something I always had an abundance of. The journey of making a deck is not something you should rush through because it grows with you.
