View Full Version : Help. Unknown stone

I've got a stone, on a cord round my neck.
It's a tumble polished stone with a drilled hole, sort of square, very dark red, almost brown/black. Opaque.
Can't find anything that colour on any site which shows stones and crystals.
Anyone got any ideas?

It may be a species of Jasper. It is similar to red jasper but much, much darker.

I have worn it a couple of days and nights and a very weird thing happened.
In the night, asleep, I started talking and woke up my bloke. He listened and says I was talking a foriegn language. I went on for ages apparently.
Not only do I rarely talk in my sleep but I cannot speak any language but english!
Personally I reckon it was the stone.

Lillie I found two stones Mahogany Obsidian (http://www.mineralcraft.com/acatalog/MahoganyObsidianTps1L.JPG) Or perhaps Mahogony Jasper. (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.crystalfantasy.co.uk/assets/images/Mahogany_Jasper.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.crystalfantasy.co.uk/html/palm_stones.html&h=151&w=150&sz=19&tbnid=_sD8Uu6RpVoJ:&tbnh=90&tbnw=89&start=4&prev=/images%3Fq%3DMahogany%2Bjasper%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%2 6rls%3DGGLD,GGLD:2004-17,GGLD:en%26sa%3DN) Which seemed from your description, that they could be a possibility. Either one of these look familiar?

Is it one solid colour or is it a deep red with black/brown flecks in it?

Edit: That Mahogany Jasper is beautiful.

I thought it also might be ox blood coral gemstone - have a look here:

The metaphysical properties are discribed as: is thought to quiet the emotions, bringing peace, and to facilitate intuition, imagination, and visualization.

Thank you all for such great links.

This is what my stone looks like

It is a picture of brecciated jasper. So my stone could well be that. I know that this stone often has light bits in it, and mine dosn't, but nor do the stones in the picture. It might be some other form of jasper, the mahogany perhaps, but the picture I found is the one that looked most like. Also, I have some red Jasper, and the feel of the two stones is very similar, texture etc.

Next time I talk in my sleep I hope he does record me. I feel like I missed out on the interesting event!

Thank you for the help.

It could be garnet:

My polished garnet is very dark, almost black and very solid - heavy compared to my other polished stones. What is the weight like?

It is not particularly heavy, nothing that I have noticed.

I don't think it is garnet as it does not have that transculency that garnet has. It is very opaque, brownish red shading into black lines and patches. With (as I now notice) a tiny spot of brighter (but not bright) red on one corner.
(and a big scratch down the side where the drill slipped as the hole was being put through. It's funny, I got the stone with the hole already through it, but that mark speaks as clear as day what happened)

I have a couple of opaque star garnets. One of them has no star - it just kind of shimmers just the barest little bit, and you can only see it if you are looking very closely for it.

The garnet sounds really nice, but mine is totally opaque, in the way that red jasper is.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I reckon some kind of jasper. Possibly a reddish mahogany, or a very dark brecciated.

I really like it, it just sort of appeals to me at the momment, though I have had it, with a load of other stuff, in a cupboard for years, and only rediscovered it the other day, and fell in love with it!

Must be what I need at the momment.
