View Full Version : Anyone like the green Thoth?

I don't have a Thoth (yet, hopefully), but I've heard so much about the green tinge that's on the US Games edition that bothers alot of readers (I don't like green either), that was making me wonder.

Does anybody actually like the green? I mean, this "version" is still around, and hasn't really been fixed yet, has it?

The large size Thoth deck in the green U.S. Games box until the last year or so came with the green tinge cards. The new stock large size Thoth deck in the green U.S. Games box now comes with the same, large non green-tinged cards as come with in the blue AG Müller box. Depending on whether the U.S. Games green box deck is old stock or new stock, you will or will not get the green tinge cards. I recently bought the new stock and therefore have the non green-tinge cards.

The ISBN on the U.S. Games green box remains unchanged. Therefore, the only way to tell if it's old stock versus new stock is to go to the store and take the sealed cards out of the cardboard box (with the merchant's permission, of course), keeping the cellophane intact but look to see if the top card in the sealed pack has the green tinge or not. That's what I ended up doing at the store. :)

I deliberately bought a green-tinged copy of the large Thoth, and I really like it. True, the colors are brighter on my smaller Thoth. But to me, the real advantage of the green tinge is that it makes the keywords (or card titles, or whatever you want to call them) much, much less obvious and noticeable.

I'd actually bought the green-tinged copy (on eBay) because it was much cheaper than the more recently printed copies, and I was looking for a deck to trim, so I didn't want to spend much in case the trimming didn't turn out well. But then I realized, happily, that trimming wouldn't be necessary because the keywords are printed in green, on a green background...I really don't see them unless I'm looking for them.

And honestly, the green tinge doesn't bug me. I think it makes some of the cards look really cool. In any event, it doesn't distract me.

I have the muted/green Thoth, along with the bright/clear one. I prefer the back of the green one- the back is really amazing - because it has no white borders. The toned down coloration of the green one is appealing to me, like cool jazz versus heavy metal (joke). Words and colors aren't so bold and brash. On the other hand, the AG Muller is the powerhouse Thoth that shakes and awakens with its full-force electricity. So, one's more yin and one's more yang. Both are Universes.

I also have the green tinged Thoth and I'm not overkeen on it. I think the green washes out details. My version is an older one and some of the cards are blurry. When I bought my new non-green Thoth the colours and details really stood out, it seemed like a different deck.

I also think the shade of green used on the green-tinged Thoth is unpleasant to look upon, but that might just be me.

I have the green one. It also came in the white OTO box from the late 70s to about 2000 (at least)

It is my favourite for the following reasons.
Cos I learned with it and it's what I am used too.
It has the red and black hexagram (the best card ever made!)
No white borders on the back

I have never actually owned one of the Muller decks. (or one of the other non green variants)
But I have seen them. They are bright, right enough, but they look odd to me.
Just years and years of looking at the green one, I suppose.

I think that it is very hard to get the green now. Only avaliable second hand, On ebay it is now being called 'rare' and 'vintage'!

I have heard, though don't quote me, that there is a non green but still not so bright Thoth out there.
I don't know anything about that, but I have seen it mentioned here on AT.

There were two reasons I picked the Thoth:

1. The large cards are the perfect size for my hands.

2. I liked the green borders. I own several shirts and sweaters that are a close match.

I like them. I prefer the regular thoth. I have six thoth decks. 1 small, 3 early 70s. I bought a 1969 deck from a woman in New zealand 4 years ago.I have an 80ish one I use freguently, and then the one I use most of the time which I have... yes I did it. cut the borders off. Anyone else do that? Do you still think you can like me for doing that? <she said with a glint in her eye> I had to. I was compeled cause the words got in my way. and... the words are fine sometimes.
peace...in thothness

I removed the borders from my Thoth deck also, and am very pleased with the results as well.

I think that everyone has covered all the great things about it except one. The green was made on a much better stock. They are more durable. Not having the white border makes the Rose Cross larger. To me that means more power. It's the oldest deck I have unfortunately. I do admit that the colors are nicer on the AGM version but it is still a wonderful deck.

Yes, the stock is good. Importantly, the back design includes no white border. This really brings the Cross to full life. And the pale, muted colors are not so bold to the eye, although they are less colorful. It's like a winter Thoth to the other, stronger summer Thoth. Even though it's called the green Thoth. It has a shadowy quality, not a shiny one.

I have the non-tinged deck and I'm glad. I don't like the green at all (lillie knows what I'm talking about :):):)) . I don't really use thoth anymore because I don't connect with it much. If you want a copy of the non-tint, go to borders.com and order it without it. Or call them and order it and specify no green tint.

Yes Mike, I know :)

But the truth is that you would be hard put to buy a green deck new anymore.

All the decks for sale now seem to be the bright colours and the white borders.
(I don't know about the 'new' printing by 'Urania Verlags')

The older ones are easy to get on ebay.
Get them now! They are 'vintage' and 'rare'! everyone will want one soon!

They are 'vintage' and 'rare'! everyone will want one soon!

Not me and I'm not so sure I'd buy a used deck that I don't like to sell later. If it was mint condition and you kept if for 50 years in the package and sold it, it'd be worth a lot more.

Well, 'everyone will want one' was a bit of a joke and an exageration, really.

But I'd buy something if I thought I could sell it for more!

And in 50 years time (if I'm lucky!) my son will be sitting with my corpse and my cards and a bit of paper that tells him how to sell them, where to sell them and how much to expect for each!.

A. I want him to get the best out of the little I leave.
B. I would like the cards to stay in the Tarot community, with people who appreciate them, not just chucked with the rest of the garbage I'm likley to leave!

But I think I will be buried with my greenies! Got to have something to do in the afterlife!

I have the green tinge Thoth and made a green/gold/red bag to go with it...Love the cards to death...want to married them if I could...but I also like the color green so go figure...

I think it's a personal preference..for me ..green is about Growth and since the Thoth may end up being my shadow deck..it's appropiate the color.

*jumping up and down with joy* OMG OMG ...I just made 800!!!! Yeah!! And the perfect place to make it too!! *Jumping up and down*

Lillie

Congrats on the 800!

Surprisingly I do not like the color green! (except for grass and leaves and stuff)
Weird, eh?

I need to do a search on the meaning of green and why people react to it...funny thing...up till this year..I hated the green...but after that..I had to have green everything..........and now.......My Thothie is green...

Life and Renewal: Green is life. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment. On the flip side, green is jealousy or envy (green-eyed monster) and inexperience.

Nature of Green: Green is a restful color with some of the same calming attributes of blue. Like blue, time moves faster in a green room.

Culture of Green: Green is the national color of Ireland and is strongly associated with that country. Green also has close associations with Islam. Because of all the green in nature the color is reminiscent of Spring. Coupled with red it's a Christmas color

Ireland..hmm....Guinness....Ale....Laying on the floor...yeah that's why I like green...plus I'm quarter Irish...*evil laugh*

When I get my eyes tested they try different lenses and have me look at 2 lighted panels, one green, one red, and tell them which one is brighter.
Differet lenses make them change!

Maybe some people like or dislike green (and/or red) because they see it as bright or dull because of their eyes.

I always wondered about why different lenses changed how I saw the colours, it seemed odd to me.

That's an interesting question...are you colorblind???
I know some people who are sensitive to certain shades of green that it makes them sick...I think it's one of those cases where you associate events with colors....for me...there was an instant connection with the Green Thoth compared to others.

Lillie

No, I'm just very short sighted.

Once I got a pair of free sun glasses with an ordinary pair of glasses. The sunglasses did a weird thing where all vertical things had a red line on one side and a green line on the other, whilst horizontal things did the same with yellow and blue.
A bit freaky in a psychedelic way!

It was like when something has been printed and the diferent colours are just a little out of line.

I think the red and green thing during the eye test might be to prevent the lenses splitting the light into colours like a prism does. and like the sunglasses must have done. But I don't know for sure.

At a festival one year someone I knew got some red lensed sun glasses and some identical ones but with blue lenses.
Then he swapped the lenses round so they all had one red and one blue lense.
Looking through them was very freaky, but very amazing, and very trippy.

Yeah, in those circumstances, it was well cool. But you would go mad if you had to live like that.

Everything was very weird looking!

Strange that you mention the green colour used - I'm not that bothered about greens, although not my favourite colour, but I really really dislike the shade used on the green Thoth - its so pale and wishywashy - I wonder what the deck would have looked like with a green that was just a shade or two darker.

*cuddles her deck and smooches it*

Green has a psychological effect on people and if you think about it...a lot of it tends to be negative....

Hi Lillie and Bladeraven,

Your making me feel guilty now lol - my poor Green Thoth is trying so hard to work with me - it gives me the Empress and the Moon cards, my favourites, nearly everytime I get it out and I still won't read with it properly lol - maybe its me that should try harder. :)

Try "romancing" it....candles.....best thing is not to force it..take your time...do a one card read each day and build up to it...if all else fails..get it a nice bag and bribe it..lol

Ahhhh now I got that one covered :D

The green Thoth was the first tarot deck that I made a bag for - I'd never made one before and it took a while to get right but I was pleased with the end result and the Thoth has stayed in it from the start. :)

Hehehehe..now let's lure the Thoth out...lol...Sometimes when it comes to deck it could be all sorts of factors...not the right time, experience, emotion, hmm...that's all the same thing isn't that ?? lol

Take it very slow.....Treat it like making a new friend...some people you have instant connections, some you have to take time and others, no matter what, you just can't seem to hit it off with.....

Try a one card daily draw with it......if that doesn't work........read about it first...otherwise....maybe just visit with the deck but don't try to read with it....In time you'll find yourself ready to use it...........

For me...I saw it as both meeting people and driving...I'm use to all walks of life and I'm use to drive everything from an itty bitty compact car to a big gas guzzling tank of a SUV...so I just jumped into it.......

There are different ways to warming up to a Tarot deck and biggest key is just don't push yourself...read the threads....chat about it....PM/chat with others who are parents of Thoths and you'll find yourself warming up to it...

If all else fails..take the Thoth out for a romantic dinner of candles, Italian food and a bottle of wine *Shrug*...Lol

Biggest key is that don't feel guilty of not using it right now....Give yourself time so you can build up an appreciation for it, instead of trying to force yourself and end up disliking the cards...worse thing is to get a deck that you want, haven't really warm up to, give it away and several years later when you yourself has had an experience that opens the door to you using the Thoth, regretting not having it...If you find yourself say...give yourself a year, of not using the Thoth or maybe 2 years...then you have to ask yourself the question....were we really meant to be or maybe we're just not right...Hmmm....Maybe I should write a book called How to date Tarot Decks??

*hugs*...Best part is you have this site, myself and everyone else to talk about it..and maybe that's just the key for you...talk with everyone, participate and maybe that will encourage you and your relationship with Thoth.

Thanks for your words of encouragment Bladeraven :) - I really would like to get to know this deck better. It is visually very different from my other Thoths but at the time I bought it, and looked through it at the shop, it was the only Thoth I'd ever seen and I did like it. The problems started when I'd got it home.

But I think your right, I feel like I've just about cleared the deck of any energy that came with it, negative or otherwise. I'll never know what uses its previous owner had for it and now I need to try and create the bond that I do have with my other decks. Maybe it is time for a little romancing. :D

Whenever you have spare time...or bored or can't sleep...take out the deck..shuffle through them...ask yourself ..what sparked you to get them...concentrate on the positive and infuse them with that..*Hugs* I think you'll do great with them...just don't get yourself down if there isn't an immediate connection...sometimes....the best things take time...Kinda like..you can get fast food and the instant gratification or wait for a fine dinner to be cooked and enjoy the result at the end...I think you'll connect with them...*hugs*

Yes.

romance it, Emily.

Tell your lovely greenie how much you love it.
Stroke it's edges and shuffle it's cards gently.

I'm sure it will appreciate the attention.

I actually love this deck. I've got the green one that I got as a study deck, its box is very battered and held together with scotch tape, and I've got the smaller regular one.

I think the reason why I like it is because its so much larger and you can look at the details so much better.

By candlelight the deck is much less green. It sort of mutes to green-gold. Maybe this deck just doesn't like bright light. Under soft lighting it is enchanting and reads impecably.

I'll have to try candlelight Wizzle, I did notice that when I took it out yesterday it was a dull day and the green was not so in your face - it did look muted but it just gave the impression of having softer paler colours.
