Directions..east/west etc

Hello....I am experimenting with crystals and direction. What is an accurate and easy way to figure out direction in the U.S. without a compass. The sun is supposed to rise at the east...so then facing the sun...my left hand side is south, right is north...and behind me is west?.

If you're facing East then North is to your left and South is to your right

Thanks! for the reply and putting me in the right direction ...its all relative to me but for directions sake this helps as I had it backwards. The other funny thing that happens is when I can see the sun from every window in my house...so I think I might invest in a good compass as well...seeing that also there are times when its dark or places with no windows amd for I will really be lost.
