View Full Version : The Gill tarot....convince me
Hello All
I hear so much nice things about the Gill tarot lately here on the forum. I have the deck and have used it a couple of times a long time ago. Its was a little confusing for me then.
So what i ask; convince me to try the deck one more time!
I dare you all ;) LOL
i love the gill, but i doubt i could ever convince anyone else to love it.
it is a cool and collected deck, one that speaks in abstract terms to your mind. but it is also very open and it won't shut you out with lots of mysticism. just look at the courts!
now, there you have courts that clearly states who they are and what they want.
i will leave with that = clear and concise deck with no fluff.
i suggest you use it in a comparative reading for extra insight into almost any other deck/card
what's confusing with this deck maan? is it the minors?
artwise it's a lovely deck i think, the meanings of the cards are based on the tree of life and numerology.
give it a try again :-) , it's worth it, as it's a great deck.
kaz
jema, i agree with your comments :-)
there are more people that like the gill than you think, i know that pollux like it, and myself.

yeah, it is a great deck, i always recommend people to get it but they never do. i think the artwork is good, but perhaps not spectacular like many other decks. it may look a little boring even - but this is definatly one of my top three decks (and i got more then 40)
i will try to get the book for it one of these days - i always forget that there is a book too!
do you have it? is it any good?
GGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had written such a lenghty post!!!! And it didn't show up!!! IT TOOK OFF!!!
GGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I'll write it again from the beginnig... this and more for a Forum-colleague, especially if her nickname is Maan! :)
*POLLUX THE RUFFIAN ON A GENERAL BASIS - I should add it to my signature I think*
It started like this...
WOWOWOWOW!!!! HEY BOTH OF YOU KAZ AND MAAN!!!
YOU MUST JOIN ME AND JEMA IN OUR GILL DECK FAN CLUB!!! (...)
I don't know if it "fair" to convince to use a deck either. But I want to take the fact that you are problematic about it as a good sign! ;)
What is really lovely about this deck is, first off, the style. There is a HUGE difference between Majors and Pips, and Courts. But, strangely, I DON'T MIND IT!!! I actually love it so much, the fact that they represent different field of the Tarot is stated handsomely. the Artwork is stunning in its semplicity and beauty,. Soft, easy, colourful! And the cards are not brim-full with mini-details and undetectable features - you don't need a magnifying glass to hear the card speak.
The Majors are gorgeous. There's not a comment I could do on style - just perfect. Warm, lovely, exquisite! And what I really love is that meanings and pictures to a certain extent are still very traditional, halfway between RW and Thoth maybe, yet they are original and represent an innovative way to present the symbol/character/archetype. I also love the choice to associate to each card a specific "place" - The Empress is a hill, The Priest a lake, The Hermit a snowy peak...
Courts have such definite personalities! There is a wonderful feeling about them, I can't exaplin... If only I could speak Italian! :( Maybe Kaz would understand! :) *LOL*
the Pips are unconventional. AND MARVELLOUS!!!
They are not pips actually, cos there are images. At times they are simple and geometrical (Aces, 8-7 swords, 4-3 Cups, 8-7 Wands, 8-6 Pents...), at times they are articulate (10-9 swords *and Pollux starts drooling*, 6 Wands, 4 Swords...).
It's such an origianl approach to them! I have to say that I haven't got really deep with it yet though, for lack of time and application. But I love these cards!
There's a light, friendly feel about this Deck. And the way Minors speak, despite the simplicity of the images, is simply amazing. It works so well for me!
HEY!!! We are still forgetting that it is heavily based on Qabbalah and the Tree of Life! It might be a good alternaive to Thoth for such in-depth studies too Maan! :) I don't have the book yet - *poor Pollux! :(*, but hopefully Kiama will help me get ne soon.
I didn't know there was also Kaz and Maan with us, Jema! It strikes me as jolly good! :)
And I hear there's also a new member keen on the Gill, I think stevepolsz... I'll PM him and tell ihm to pop up :)
i only have the deck, didn't know there is a book about it, what's the title and author (isbn) ? and what is this book like, card descriptions or.......?????
40+ decks, i dont think i will ever have that many, though my wishlist is growing.
top of my list in favorites are iamone, thoth, osho, gill, templar, and faeries oracle. we have some similar tastes in decks i think.
the gill deck is absolutely not boring, ok, it's not stunning art, but it's beautiful in its own way. and i really like the courts in this deck. the minors are unique, i think only this deck has them like this, and i like them, they are quite talkative.
kaz
OOPS!!! I didn't see your posts before mine, maybe I was typing!
What a fast feedback!
The Book is by Elizabeth Gill, and I was trying to serach for it, but the PC did not agree with me.
I don't remember the Publisher, but I saw it recently on Amazon, I' sure!

I had a look at some of the cards from this deck on Pollux's cam, and I really liked it.
The large numbers on the minors threw me to start with, but the vivid style really conveys the emotions of the card, while many decks just give you dried-out symbolism, without making the cards feel right...
The book is published by US Games, who published the deck. It may not be available at Amazon, but for sure you could order it from usgamesinc.com, or from learntarot.com.

yay for pollux and the glowing Gill praise :)
i agree with everything he said!
Gill is for me a break-through deck, when i am stuck or just sick and tired of a reading i had laid out for the day (i always leave my spreads for hours to let them ripe) i just take out the Gill and i am un-stuck.
example for how my mind works with these minors:
just look at the 7 of swords!
they are just unfocused, going in all directions in this icky sticky yellow/green glue-like mess. this calls for some sharpening of your wit! stop and think on what you really want and ow much you are ready to fight to get there.
or 4 of cups where the cups are spilling over - yet remains empty - there is that greenish goo again, slow and sticky and keeping you trapped - not letting you expand and evolve. what would it take for your soul to be receptive again?
some of my fav minors are all of the eights.
how much more convincing do you need Maan?
:P
kaz
Jema, you are gaining room in my heart so fast! ;)
How could I resist your compliments? :*
HOW MY GOD!!!
Do you realise how quick we were to get this post growing?
It seemed more of a chat than a message-posting! *LOL*
And while I write, I receive the e-mail saying that Kaz has already answered once again!!!
Hey guys, if I get the book soon, we might start a Study Group together, maybe not even on Aeclectic, so that we don't use up the spce, just on our own.
What do you think?
Jema is our leader, cos she's the one with the widest experience I think, I can be the book-keeper, the oe providing texts and reference...
*I'm wishing on a star...*
i am all for a study-group. that might be fun and interesting, i may have some experience with Gill but i still got a lot to learn! i only just now am trying to learn more on the tree of life.
pollux as book-keeper sounds great:)
hope you get it soon!
i'll try to buy it sometime after the summer.
i think elizabeth josephine gill made the art-work for another deck too! wish i could remember what it was called.
http://phoenixskye.topcities.com/gilltarot.htm
All the DECK ON SHOW!!!
ANYONE OUT THERE!! CHECK THIS OUT!!!
hmm, now that sounds interesting, what other deck is that? tarotholics around here maybe know.....
i will get the book at some time i think.
studygroup? have i got time for that? don't know yet, maybe after the summer.....though this is a great deck for studying tree of life/kaballa, and there is a studygroup about that now in the general section.

I believe Josephine Elizabeth Gill did the Majors for the Servants of the Light deck. This deck is out of print and *extremely* hard to find.

And I am wondering why I didn't put into the real world my desire to PM you and Jema and Maan tonight, and ask you to join me in the Chat section, instead of pursuing this Message-posting chat, about the Gill! *LOL*
Next time I will surely Pm you three, and we're gonna have a deep discussion... :D ;) :*

thanks for the link!
that is the one i was looking for, it is on my wishlist but i think i get by very well with the Gill for now.
Wauw i did go and watch some tv and when i came back this thread suddenly was 3 pages long!!!
I think i'm convinced ;)
What originally drew me to the Gill was some of the majors especially the Empress ( witch is my soul and personality card) and the one minor i just adored right from the start; the Seven of Cups!!! The dragon curling around the seven! And of course being a fairytale fan the princes of cups! Swimming to the light... its is so gorgeous.!!
But the large numbers and the lack of traditionla symbols was what anoyed me... But now i see that it si traditional but Toth based. I did not know much about the toth back then! A real long time ago :D
Come to think of it Gill was my 4th deck :)
And of course the backs!!! I just don't like them :(
BTW i did see the Servants of the light tarot four months back in a shop and DID NOT BUY IT!!!! :( how stupid is that ?
Ps i'm in for the study group
Okay, I have a question for you Gill-a-holics...
How do you interpret the Court cards? Do you use more common definitions for them, or do you go with the keywords, which are sometimes at odds with conventional meanings?
I do like this deck, by the way...
-- Lee
i read them as if i never even seen a pair of courtcards before:)
like this is the very fist prince of cups. but i am of course still aware of the other courts, the persons place in that system, the sequence of the cards and their underlying attributes.
Well, I'm convinced! I've decided to make the Gill my main reading deck for the foreseeable future.
I really love the Majors -- they seem to me to capture the esssence and feeling of each one better than any other deck.
The Minors are simple, but I think Pollux is absolutely right that they speak eloquently despite their simplicity. I've been experimenting lately with unillustrated-pip decks/playing cards, and these Minors seem to me to be the perfect combination of non-illustratedness and enough of a picture to establish a mood.
For the Courts, I also agree with Pollux that they have very individual personalities. Also, I found a way to think about them which is helpful to me, although those who have worked with this deck have probably thought of this already:
The Court cards of each suit illustrate a story of development, from initial beginnings to full development; however, rather than starting with Page/Princess and culminating in King (as in most decks), in this deck it starts with the King as the lowest level and culminates in the Princess.
One might say that the seed is planted in the Kings (Intuition, Innovation, Inspiration, Conception); the seed is watered and nutured by the Queens (Reason, Reflection, Contemplation, Nuture); the first material manifestation, i.e. a seedling, bursts forth in the Princes (Action, Aspiration, Creativity, Construction); and the full growth and fulfillment of spiritual purpose occurs in the Princesses (Control, Transformation, Evolution, Growth).
Gill doesn't refer to this in her book, by the way, but it seems to me she certainly implies it in the way she titles the cards.
One book that does see the Courts this way is the Tarot of the Spirit book, which is also heavily Cabala-influenced. The analogy of the growth of the plant is something I read somewhere, but I can't remember where -- maybe the Tarot of the Spirit.
Frankly, I don't find Gill's book to be very helpful. Each card is discussed mostly from a spiritual development viewpoint, with very little in the way of advice on what a card might mean if the question doesn't concern spiritual development. Each card's Cabalistic background is discussed in depth, and I'm sorry to say my eyes glaze over whenever I try to read about Cabala. Obviously I'm just not smart enough to absorb it! :)
Thanks to Pollux and Jema and everyone else for inspiring (King of Cups) me!
-- Lee :)
i think the "reversed" order of the courts is very kabbalistic.
the kings while being higher up in the tree of life - doesn't have as much to do with the reality as the princesses who brings down the pure idea to earth and makes it real. (or something like it)
i am with you Lee - not into the Kabbala that much, i am just now(this summer) trying to read up about it but i am still waiting to find the perfect book or teacher.
it is like a huge hole i need to fill in order to add an extra dimension to the tarot
Hi Lee
I like your way of seeing the court cards in the gill tarot.
It makes me think of the creation of live in the "real' world. The man inpregnates the woman etc.
But i can't figure out the princess and princesses...
When i get home i will take out the court cards of the gill again and see what i come up with
You certainly inspired something here too;)
Love and light
Maan
lee,
you are right with your thoughts on the courtcards. i read them "the other way around" as well, compared to "normal" decks. how i see them is like this:
fire is the spark, the will (kings),
water makes it grow consious, into a plan with options (queens),
air sets it to being, actualisation (princes),
and earth sees it into reality and results (princesses).
jema,
i don't know if this is kabbalistic, i don't know much, actually close to nothing, about kaballa. but i sort of stumbled over this sequence when working with the deck because the courts didn't make sense in the beginning for me. i started of with just seeing them as fire, water air and earth, and this somehow put me on the right track.
kaz
Kaz, it worked that way for me as well!
I think it is also in the LWB - somewhere I read to pay attention to the Fire/Water/Air/Earth nature of the Courts, King/Queen/Prince/Princess respectively; It happened months ago though, so I don't remember much.
In addition - and this is what I would call destiny, or higher will - when I opened the Deck, the cards were sequenced thus: MAJORS; Wands, from King to Ace; Cups, from King to Ace; Swords, from King to Ace; Pentacles, From King to Ace. When I first saw through the deck, that order was a sort of subliminal message I think! The same pattern F/W/A/E was to be found in the order of suits as well as in that of the Courts!
That is the way I look at the Pentacles courts, for example: The King imagines the wheel, the Queen harvests the raw material, the Prince constructs it, and the Princess uses it to create a piece of fabric.
Lee, I agree with your way to see the card too, and hope you will have a good time with your Gill. :)
I think I will get the book all the same, I know I am silly, but it sounds so unprofessional for me to read with a deck and not having a glimpse to the book written for it! :P Yeah! I want to use the Gill as my main deck too! I want to use it for general querents, people I don't know, because it is the most visually appealing deck that I have - the Aquarian sometimes scares...
I will try to have some Cabala study too this summer. Probably just for this deck, and probably only with the book for this deck... who knows... We might come here again, and share! :)
NO! You guys convinced me too. Another deck on the list. *whimpers* The card that got me the most was the Empress, how she just beautifully seems to blend in with the earth. Dagnabit.
Perhaps we should start another "study group." TA: Tarotholics Anonymous.

Wow, this is really exciting, Pollux, you're a genius. Now that you say it, yes, the Princesses are the ones who actually *use* the thing which was thought of/nurtured/constructed in the previous Court cards. The Princess of Cups is the first Cup Court card to actually *inhabit* the water. The Princess of Swords is the first to actually use the sword for something constructive rather than waving it around dramatically. And the Princess of Wands is using her Fire energy to create a new reality. And what you said about the Princess of Disks is perfect -- she's the first to *use* what the Prince has constructed.
I also like what Kaz said about fire being the spark, water making it grow into a plan, etc.
I'm in love with the Gill!
-- Lee
So now I should add "GENIUS" to my signature.
And "CUPIDO" as well... No, maybe "EROS", or "MATCHMAKER"... *LOL*
Keslynn, now I feel so guilty for having convinced you too, but I'm glad you give me some bad Karma to buy a GILL deck! *LOL*
This TAROT-HOLIC FORCE Rocks! I must try to Pull things as Jedi Knights do...
May the Tarot-holic Force be with you all! *LOL* :D
Yes! Pollux you can add genius :)
It's brilliant!!!!
D*mn wish i had the Gill with me right now!! Its like i got a new deck! I'm so eager to read with it i already have a spread in mind :)
But i'm not the only one thats so enthusiastic i just saw Lee who ordered a new bag for the Gill from tarottotes;)

oh hey. if there's a gill fan club, i wanna join! she's my primary deck. i love her :}
Yes, Pollux, you absolutely have my permission to quote me as naming you GENIUS EROS in your signature.
By the way, just because this deck is simple doesn't mean it's simplistic. There are several subtle touches... for example, I just noticed today for the first time that on the Hanged Man (my favorite Hanged Man ever), there are coins scattered on the ground beneath him, which ties in with antique decks which show him with coins falling out of his pockets.
Also, the woman falling from the Tower has her eyes closed and is smiling...
-- Lee
Do you folks realize this thread has grown to 4 pages in about 36 hours? Fine, I guess I'd better get it too, then! Jeez! :D
lol, yes qolus, if you don't have it, you should get it asap !!!
serious, it's a great reading deck, lovely art, a one of a kind deck.
kaz
OH LEE!!! You are getting the Gill maniac out of me here!!! :)
So here's another one:
PUT LOVERS AND DEVIL SIDE BY SIDE. WHAT DO YOU SEE? ;)
They are my Personality/Soul and Shadow... I was personally interested in looking at them together... Yet it doesn't detract anything form the fact I am a GENIUS EROS! *LOL* :D
What is this thing of Tarot-totes? Do they have a bag that matches specially with the Gill? Am I going to receive bad Karma also for your bag, Lee? *LOL*:D
It's not simplistic at all, well said man! All hail the Gill Deck! :)
I noticed that things of Tower and Hanged Man too. And that of the Prince constructing can also be found in Cups, he's shaping one out of clay. If I recall something else I'll flash here straight away! :D
Well, Qolus, maybe you didn't notice that the first 20 posts or so were a sort of instant feedback! More of a chat! On a very sad Saturday evening, Pollux was online cos he didn't know if he'd go out - but there Maan, Kaz and Jema came, and Lee... What a special thread! :D
Maybe after all this Fan Club is not a bad idea, if so many of us intend to go through some Cabala studies, we could set up a Study group on Gill heavily based on Cabala, also on account of the fact that Lee (he he :D) has got the book, and I might get one too... Or the other way around, we could study Cabala basing on Gill rather that Thoth and so on...
Hey guys! Well I am really glad you all discussed this deck in depth as it has been on my wish list for some time and now that I have your opinions it will probably soon be joining my collection *LOL*.
As for your study group, there is a study group on the Qabalah going on. It is currently in the general thread. The group will be using various decks (each their preferred deck), much like the 78 DW study group and you guys might want to consider joining in there. Just an idea. Again thanks for the info on the Gill!
Well, this proves that my hours on this Forum are not enough to know what's going on... Sorry. :(
But I promise I'll do better next time! *LOL* :D
I do think I will join the group this summer then! And Gill sounds a god option... Especially If I managed to come by a book! :)
I'm glad this thread helped you... get another deck! *LOL*
Bad Karma creeping on my shoulders... But I also think it was something like Bad Karma you were reediming, sort of "You get back what you send out" - we all know you are a Tarot-holic! *LOL*
And actually, you still have to influence ME to buy a deck... I'm so righteous, I think it will be a difficult task... *LOL* :D

who me? a taro-holic? ~giggles~ ... please feel no bad Karma, I consider getting new decks good Karma *LOL*. Besides your "crime" was not too serious, the deck was already in the top 10 most wanted, it simply moved up *ROFLMAO*. What deck would you like to try to influence you with this time? *LOL* ;P
Maybe Osho Zen, Robin Wood, Chinese, Cosmic Tribe, Celtic Dragon, Feng Shui, Fantastical, Goddess, Haindl, Hudes, New Palladini, Old English, Old Path, Rider Waite (I still own none), Rohrig, Thoth, Ukiyoe, Universal Waite, Wild Spirit, World Spirit...
Is it enough? I know my knowledge of decks can't be compared to yours, that is maybe the greatest to be found in a tarot-holic. If you have other ideas, well... just give it a try! *LOL*

Ohhhhh dear ~giggles~ you have quite a few of my favorites on your little list up there. You mean to tell me you do not own the Robin Wood yet? ~tsk tsk~ I do not blame you for not ownining a RWS, but if you feel strange that you do not have one then get the Universal, it was much more pleasing to the eye in my opinion. Well we are getting way off topic here, so pm the list of decks you have so I do not waste time trying to convince you to buy a deck you have, and then I will start a thread called "Corrupting Pollux" ~chuckles~ You are gem, you know that don't you?

Greetings All--
Here are just a few notes on the gill deck and kabala.
First, a bit about color. Check out the back of the cards (which in and of itself is a brilliant rendition of the tree of life). The sephiroth are depicted as four concentric circles like a bull’s eye, representing the four worlds. Each of the circles are colored a la Golden Dawn according to the world it represents. This is the only color-coded tree I’ve seen that goes to this extent. And it's just the back of the deck.
Furthermore, the coloring extends to the minor cards. The background color is, with few exceptions, the color according to number and scale. This adds a ‘subliminal’ quality to study of the deck as to kabala. The coloring is an unobtrusive introduction of an important, but often neglected quality.
One can examine a world of the tree simply by setting out one of the suits in the proper patterning. For the ‘tree of creation’, lay the cards numerically from Kether to Malkuth. For the ‘tree of redemption’, lay the card numerically from Malkuth to Kether. To deepen the contemplation, add the king to the 2, the queen to the 3, the prince to the 6 and the princess to the 10. (I have never gone this far, but one could add in the Majors to include the pathways in the pattern)
With most decks, I have some difficulty with the court cards. I have found the Gill deck to eliminate this problem. Again, it is the coloring that is the key quality. One thing I find to be a marvelous contemplation is to lay the courts out in a square. There are so many ways of doing this that you could spend years going 'AHA!!' over and over again.
The first and foremost layout is the standard king, queen, prince, princess ordering. Going downward is the typical wand, cup, sword and pentacle ordering. If we change the ordering a bit to: wand, pentacle, sword and cup, we obtain the astrological ordering.
We can order:
Wands—king queen prince princess
Cups—queen prince princess king
Swords—prince princess king queen
Pentacles—princess king queen prince
This arrangement corresponds to the simple permutation of the holy name YHVH.
Another ordering I found very interesting is this one:
queen swords king pents prince wands queen cups
prince cups princess wands princess pents king swords
king wands princess cups princess swords prince pents
queen pents prince swords king cups queen wands
if you start with the king of wands and follow counter-clockwise, you get the wheel of the zodiac. the center square is the elements represented by the princesses.
but here's the weird part. If you break this square into four small squares of four cards each, you will find the each square is formed from a 'intra-suit' family-- a family where all four suits are represented.
the explorations of the courts are endless...
To date, the Gill is still best (possibly because of its simplicity) deck from which to study kabala that I have ever found.

Do you still use your Gill Tarots as commonly?
I was thinking in the New Year, this might be a pretty addition and it is not too expensive to get a book and a deck.
Does anyone also have the Servants of Light Tarot and find this more intuitive (off chance--I've never known anyone who read with the Servants of Light, even though I read it is almost impossible to find and people like it).
I actually finally was able to use the Thoth and Via the way I wanted to in a private email reading, so I'm practising with Thoth-style decks.

Hi Mari_Hoshizaki,
I have the Gill, I really like it but havn't had it out for a while. I also have the book which I too found a little too spiritual. There is some interesting reading here so now I know what I shall be doing this evening!
IMO a good buy ;)

Hi Mari
I'm also a Gill fan, I recently got this deck in a trade and I really enjoy working with it. I have done two readings recently here with this decks (both Seekers questions) its very beautiful but also the colours in relation to the Sephiroth are remarkable. I have only touched on this subject but the Gill is excellent for taking what you want from it. IMO its very well designed for size, colours and clever pictures in the pips. Infact I prefer the pips. I haven't got the book, I keep looking at it in my local shop but something stops me from buying it as I've heard mixed opinions on it, perhaps someone else can tell you more about it??
Moonbow* :)
I found the book to be rather vague, and written from a strictly spiritual standpoint, not much good if you want to know what a card means in a specific real-life situation.

Any new Gill fans? Any Gill users from this old thread who are still using and enjoying the deck? I recently aquired it, and it's one of my favorite decks! :) I don't yet have the book but want it.
I recently purchased three decks in a quite short time span, so my time/mind is taken by them. ;) But as soon as I find that I can start working with a new deck (especially something that is quite different, like this one) I'm gonna get the Gill! I've been drawn to it for months.
I've ordered the Gill deck and book. Still waiting for them to come.
Its a deck that I hadn't noticed before until, I think it was you Sunflowr, started to mention it and I did a search and thought how lovely it looked - it looks like an up-lifting summer type of deck - and I think I've fell it love with the Minors - all this from the few scans I've seen. lol
Earlier on in this thread is a link to see all the cards - not sure if I'll try that link yet or keep the card images a surprise until I get the deck.
The Empress is a card that made a really good impression on me and I might check out the Moon and Sun cards just to see what they look like. :)
Edited to say:-
The link for the full deck images doesn't work anymore so I searched again and found a few more cards - including the Moon - which is everything I hoped it would be - it has a German Shepherd, Wolf and Crab included on it. :)

I came across this wonderful review:

I've been always 'meaning' to return to this deck because of the many things it includes in a spare design...so will be trying it out soon...
I'd love to hear new or old views on this deck...
Best of tarot talk, (by the way, I'm the Mari in the thread noted earlier):
Cerulean
I love the images of the Gill Tarot and used to read with it quite a bit. I sold my copy about a year ago though. I just couldn't connect with it anymore and the keywords were starting to really get to me.
I think it's a deck that requires time and frequent use to truly shine. That being said, it's a very spiritual and rich deck.
I agree completely about the book being confusing. It's very cerebral and difficult to relate to practical questions. But you can always put the book aside and just read the deck intuitively.
It does have some cards that I absolutely adore:
The Empress
The Star
The Moon
Death
And all of the court cards are just so beautifully done.
