Can anyone provide some information about five card spreads? I haven't got a clue what they are.

Do you have a question about a specific five card spread? Because there are loads of five card spreads, the term just refers to any spread that uses five cards.

I don't have any in mind. The reason I want to know more about them is because I wanted more detailed/clearer answers to my questions (I've been using the 3 card spread).

You can always create your own spread of course. But if you don't want to do that, check out Anja's website (http://www.anjastarot.dk/spreads/spreads-main.htm), there are a lot of spreads to be found there.

Here's the five-card spread I usually use:
1. Root of the problem/concern/situation
2. Conditions at present
3. A surprise/the unexpected (could refer to past or future)
4. Advice card (what you should do next)
5. Outcome

I assume the last two spreads use the
12345 layout?

Some very good links. I liked the interpretations of cards at annikin.com. Thanks.

As i see it, the most important thing is to decide before-hand what you consider the 'meaning' of each position; what it is you want to know. (Sort of letting your deck know how to talk to you). There should be some sort of logic to it (unless you have an irrational deck }) ) Once this has been determined, just shuffle away...
