I am new to Tarot I am absolutely hooked!!
I have been searching for a deck done with Waterhouses Paintings. Unfortunately i am unable to find one.
I really would like to make my own using his paintings. I would not be looking at selling.
I obviously will have to adjust some of the paintings to include name of cards and at times add an image here and there. I am confident in doing this.
A question i have what would be the best materials to use. I will be using the computer for 97% of the making of them, Printer scanner etc....
I am asking this because i do not want the pictures to rub off if i were to use a photographic paper.
It will take a lot of study of the Tarot and Waterhouse and the history behind each painting........ Because there is a passion I can see no problem YET!!

can anyone help out???

I would love to see it! I absolutely adore Waterhouse and after I had seen some of his work face to face I was stunned for about a week.
A couple of years ago I created an online deck using pre-raphaelyte paintings and a large portion of those were Waterhouses. Alas my favourite source, artmagick.com is not as glorious as it once was and my own site has vanished from both the net and my computer.
It would be great if you posted your cards here so I can get my regular Waterhouse fix! Looking forward to seeing which paintings you match to which cards.

Yes I am excited too!!
I really do have a passion for Art, and when i Saw Waterhouses paintings, I thought they were made for Tarot. I cannot understand why there is not a deck already made. I would love to look into the copyright side of things to see where i would stand with making a deck for the market. I wouldnt know where to start though.

I have chosen a few paintings to match up with Tarot.

Circe Invidiosa as the Queen of Cups
Maybe Hamadryad as the Empress? ( undecided )
Circe offering the cup to Ulysses as the High Priestess
Apollo and Daphne as 8 Wands
Diogenes as the Hermit
Tristan and Isolde were painted to be the Lovers.

As I said before I am new to Tarot so need to study a great Deal before applying the paintings to them.

What I will find hard is Waterhouse did not paint many Male figures, So the Male cards In Tarot may turn into Female in this Deck. I am Unsure as yet!!

I will design the back myself I am looking at Crimson Reds, Emerald Green, Cream and maybe Navy Blue. All Royal Regal colours. And definately a Finely detailed design.
Thanks for your interest :)

I reckon it is going to be well worth it.
I am having quite a bit of fun searching the archives for old paintings. And then trying to pair them up with Tarot. A very interesting Journey.
I'm Loving it.

I have found a King amongst his paintings. This King shared the Kingdom with his brother, It was cut in two. His brother died/ he inherited the entire Kingdom, The problem is he is a very undecisive King.
Would any Tarot card match this.

If you follow the link I posted earlier it is a painting of Emporer Honorius.

Can anyone help here???

It strikes me that "Awakening of Adonis" would make a very good Judgement ,
the Tarot meaning of Judgement being nearer to awakening or enlightenment than the popular meaning of judgement. Just my pennyworth.

What a great idea, DancingBear. I too think Waterhouse is magnificent. I look forward to hearing more about your project.

Well I am one step away now from getting permission. :)
I will keep you informed.. I am praying I get permission. It is a passion I have now and it would be hard if i didnt get the permission.. I have asked really nicely and outlined what i will be doing with the Paintings, re images added, words , borders etc.. and just using parts of some paintings.

Hi roseyelf
Yeh ultimately it will be for myself, the problem lies in being able to share the image in this Forum or any where else for that matter.. I need permission to use the Image and display the altered state. If I were not displaying what i have done and just doing a deck just for me to see .. No problems no need to go any further... I just thought it would be nice to show you guys what i was up to and my progress..
With that i need permission from the appropriate sources..
If I do not get the permission i will have to make the deck just for me to see.
Problem is it has never been done with Waterhouse wholly souly so there could be a real reeason for it. Dont know!!
So it could be likely I dont get the permission to display the works..

I am ** Crossing my fingers tightly though**

Was thinking .. how about Lady of Sharlot on boat as the Six of Swords or Eight of Swords?

Dancing Bear
04-03-2006, 18:25
Hi VoodooGyal

Cool!! I'm glad you like him, I've only recently discovered him... I am a painter myself and have been tunnel visioned with the Impressionists.. Until a fews weeks back stumbled onto a site and was blown away!!
I instantly got the eisel out and started coming up with different swords, cups, wizards wands, and coins to suit the era's. As you know the deck I use is from another artist Walter Crane, I love him for his detail, being a detail girl myself.. But to have a Pre-Raphaelite Deck is going to be another thing.
I am finding it hard with Waterhouse as far as Male oriented cards are concerned. I have Cleopatra as the Emporer at the Moment..
It can be hard sometimes as in the meanings behind the paintings too.. Waterhouse painted the Emporer Nero, But the painting of him was of him mourning the death of his mother. So am still tossing whether to use him as the Emporer after all.
I think my first big task is to match the paintings to the deck then, being happy with my choices then apply then to card.. I have chosen the Style of lettering, which will be changing in colour to suit the painting. And i think I've decide no borders and just use the Suit Symbols or numbers in the corners of the cards rather than try to place them in the painting. ( at this stage )

I've got Lady Shallot (in boat ) as 10 Swords only because her fate is sealed their is no going back and she is well aware.
Facing the facts, No matter how she struggles to hold on to her previous ideals ( that put her into the position she is in) Her whole way of thinking would have to be changing knowing her fate and wrapping her mind around the fact she was put there in the first place. Surrendering to the Universe. Will bring peace to mind body spirit. Acceptance will bring fresh energy.
Accepting things constantly change.

Birth death rebirth.

what do you think on that???

http://www.jwwaterhouse.com/view.cfm?recordid=28

Heres a link that gives you a poem and the story behind the painting.

I will look at the 6 or 8 swords... Thanks for your input it really is important to me. I need input to make constructive, decisions. And it also makes me look at the cards different ways giving me more insight to the cards.

SO Thankyou again for your input, :)

Roseyelf i used Awakening of Adonis as Judgement. Thankyou for your input.

DB, I'm happy with your choices as long as you don't have the Lady of Sharot eliminated, I didn't think of 10 of swords so it is a fitting choice.. I just wanted one of my favourite artwork to be included! I just didn't see it mentioned in the previous post and worried you won't be thinking of it LOL :P :P :D My worries for nothing ;)

How could i Forget The Lady of Shallot :)
It is one of his most moving Paintings, I absolutely adore it myself.
I really do appreciate your input because as I said it really made me delve deep into the meanings of the cards and the Paintings. It was a really good thing, because from there it flowed beautifully.. At times i would see a painting and think oooh i like that one I wonder where it belongs. I would open the Tarot Book and on that page would be the Paintings, Card it belonged to. A bit freaky sometimes. I just went with the flow.

I am Sad though I am having a really difficult time Placing Pandora.
Any sugeestions??? I have got her as the King of Swords.
Majority of the Paintings are matched to the cards because of the meanings behind the Painting.

What would you suggest??

Owlface
07-03-2006, 17:55
Pleased to be of help. This is a lovely project. May i say i think you're completely right to not have borders. Sometimes borders are great, of course, but with JWW I think they would detract from these very sumptuous images.

Looking forward to seeing more-the Estate allowing.

Yes I am finding it hard to obtain permission being bumped from pillar to post. I now have another two letters to write.
I may have to pay for each and every painting i use, Which could be rather expensive. I am going to see how much for one painting so i may be able to show at least one. :) We will see in the next couple of weeks how it all pans out.

Yes I thought originally a thin black border, but now I really like the idea of NO border..

Thanks Roseyelf

In my Oracle tarot the 3 of swords shows a woman opening a chest. Inside the chest are three swords, and she has anguish on her face. The keywords are unexpected revelation. When I saw Pandora, it immediately reminded me of this card. When she opens up the box, a whole lot of pain is released. However, hope remains.

Thankyou for the info on Pandora. I have chosen fair rosamond ( does not mean it is a set decision though) She is the kings lover and has no hope of ever being with him as his wife. ( he already has one) but still hangs on in hope anyway being truly in love..
Your Explantion for 3 swords and why to use it sound pretty good too.. I will look into the stories behind both.
Your feedback is really apreciated, I need it to make constructive and lasting decisions. because once i have made the set it will be hard to change later.. So i need all the input i can get. so i make the right decisions.
Thankyou sooooo much :)

I can't find any paintings of his with an actual chariot in them-he seemed to prefer catching a moment in time, and I love him for that-but what about the image MIRANDA AND THE TEMPEST ? I think this matches the meaning of the card rather well : energy, tempestuousness even, and the need to keep it in check. Not that you can control a real storm, naturally, but. . . Just a thought.

I could get really into this-seeing how certain paintings can match up with Tarot meanings. :)

I actually still have this deck on disc.
4 years down the track I have learnt a whole lot more about Tarot.
Wow I cant believe its only been that long. It feels like i have been reading Tarot forever LOL!

Reviving this thread has made me want to go and revise my choices for each card. and then maybe print it out.

I never finished it as life got way too busy.

I did manage to find out that i would have to go to the art galleries to gain permission as most have the copyright rites.
It is a substantial amount of money
per image to use the image if i wanted to show it.

I guess that why that fellows furniture is so expensive, Mind thats if he has gained permission.

But to make this myself, for myself would cost nothing. But my time and materials.
Which takes me to another thing Materials,
It is the card stock i was stuck on. I dont want a thin flimsy card.
I need a card that is maybe the card stock of Buckland Romani. that is nice and thick or even Bohemian gothic is a nice thickness.
Has anyone got any suggestion where i would get card stock from.
I know you can buy blank cards.. But i have never bought it to know what type of quality it is. Can anyone let me know what it is like?

I have found some high quality ink suppliers in my home town so i am set on the ink.

I am glad some of you also Love Waterhouse. His paintings are magical.

LIke I said you have now inspired me to go find that disc and revise it all.

Hi Dancing Bear,

I've also looked at decks of blank cards and wondered...... but I saw a review about them somewhere that said the card faces were laminated - no good for painting on :(.

But when searching online once, I did see some place in USA where they said their blank cards had un-laminated faces especially suitable for artists. Not that I claim to be an Artist (capital A :)). But the postage put the price up too much for me.

I've just found this thread and I think the idea of a Waterhouse deck is very interesting, as I too love his work.

It may be of relevance to you to know that I've noticed that several cards in the LS Sorcerers' Tarot are based on Waterhouse paintings. Some of them loosely; some of them quite closely. I first noticed the likeness in The High Priestess - then they all started to jump out at me! Take a look ...

Best wishes

Reviving this Thread.
Because!!!
I have decided to add up how much it is going to cost me to gain permission to use the J W Waterhouse images that need it, and pay it!!

I must thank AshTaroot for this actually. I will be sending her a rough copy of what i have done thus far. she spurred my interest in continuing to create and refine this deck. I think the copyright laws put me at a grinding halt with this deck.. But since wantign to launch a deck based upon Lord of the Rings, I have been forced to study copyright laws accross the world.. Which made me realise using waterhouse paintings is not hard after all, especially if i have cash behind me, Which i havent got at the mo, but will have!!
Gotta right up a detailed business plan, fine details got to be looked into and presented.

Obviously it is work in progress at the moment.
I am ok to post up the odd image here and there before i gain copyright permission.. so i can give you a sneaky preview of what i am doing with the images. It comes under the fair use law.
But once i have the permission I can post em all up freely..

Obviously since starting this thread i have gained a lot of knowledge on Tarot and no doubt have found some cards that needed to be revised.
Again still studying Tarot to give me the best possible insight to what i am doing.
I am Trying to get a deck put together that would please the professional and novice alike.
I Love Art, and Waterhouse was an exceptional painter.. the Crystal Ball being a favourite. I have actually painted it without the skull and put it in pride of place in my bedroom , right next to me LOL!!

I am still working on the Middle Earth Tarot, and hopefully one day JRRTolkein estate will allow people to buy permission. then that deck will legally be able to be launched.at the moment they have shut shop! i think because the Movie "The Hobbit" is being launched in 2013.

Before i have even finished either deck i have another idea for another deck which i am excited about LOL!! I am in research stage with that one :D !!
But its all looking good too!! Copyright laws researched and its a can do as well.. :D

Obviously my passion lay with Art so the decks will definatley be revolved around Art and the movements and individuals throughout the era's

I have a budget so i do hope the permissions dont cost more than i have..
Maybe they will do a bulk buy deal :)

Anyway I will post up a finished image soon. and hopefully this thread doesnt die and its becomes work that is progressing.

Wish me Luck!!

Yes i have him as the Hermit.. it just fitted beautifully!!
He does look like christ doesnt he :) But he is actually a Greek Philosopher which fits even better. His name Diogenes, born in Sinope.

He was very contraversial in his day, along with his father who was a banker, defaced the face of the curency LOL!! he was exiled from his villiage.
according to some folk legend he consulted the oracle of delphi for advice on what to do. and made it a lifes journey to challenge established customs and virtues.
He believed Virtue was better in action than theory.
Rather than sitting around talking about what Virtue is, he proposed putting it into action.. LOL!! This idea wasnt recieved open armed LOL!

He openly mocked the extravagance of Alexander the great.
he walked through the streets through the day with his lantern, cliaming to look for a human.
To be rid of him and his openly ridiculing those in power, he was captured and he became a slave and was sold eventually ending up in Corinth.

He then proceeded to openly mock masters who felt that they needed slaves and couldnt do anything for themselves.. he thought it a weakness to be extremly dependant on another.
Through a combination of events he ended up an apprentice to Antisthenes ( a pupil of Socrates) His beliefs were eventually fashion into stoicism one of the most enduring schools of greek philosophy.

The Painting is called Diogenes of Sinope
here is the image i am using which doesnt need me to seek copyright permission WOOHOO!!
Some do but this one doesnt ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Waterhouse-Diogenes.jpg

here is more of a blurb on this character that will be the Hermit in the Waterhouse deck. If you are interested, I think he makes a fantastic Hermit!
Very switched on, knowledgable man who made sense, well educated, always seeking to learn more.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diogenes_of_Sinope

I do have better sources of info on all the paintings, but this wiki blurb is condensed and pretty much bang on anyway.
