im now working on my own deck of tarot, i've already finished two cards.
im making them on the computer, using PhotoShop5, and although i just started out, i can see what im going to run into once i finish.
when i would want to print out tha cards and start working with them, how will i do it? i can print only in paper, and i dont think that cutting carton squares and gluing the cards to them is a good idea...
anyone has a suggestion how can i outprint and use computer made cards? (their size is about 12cmx7cm, about the same as the Raider cards size).

You can get some stiffness with card stock, most printers will take the lower two grades (thicker paper gives the rollers problems). With the thicker paper at least you'll get them more solid feeling. Laminating them will add too much to get a full deck feeling comfortable in the hand, but using contact paper on one side (the back or the front) might be the added thickness you'd need & make them easier to shuffle.

this might be a little late to help (or maybe not...), but try contacting local printing/lithographic companies who can print your cards professionally on good grade paper. it might cost a bit more, but the results will probably be worth it.

hi, i have seen one of your cards - the tower i think? it is beautiful! you are very talented:)

just one little thing to think about - try to make the cards big. it is always better to resize them smaller later and almost impossible to get really good quality for printing if you save them too small, so make sure not to compromise on file-size.

i am tempted to try and make some cards myself. i doubt i would have the stamina to make 78, but just one or two would be good practise and a learning experience.

thank you jema :)
i didnt attach a link to my cards so far, so i will now - here (http://mydeck.tarotweb.vze.com).

i will take the size note to my attention... the problem is, that some of the images i use (its collage-like) are originally small, and resizing them to be bigger and then smaller again damages their quality.

you should definately try to create your own cards, it gives a new aspect and meaning to the card... its like a new way of connecting to the card. and who knows, maybe you'll like it and end up having a whole new deck... :)

Supletion, these cards are beautiful! Is that Angelina Jolie on the Devil card. She IS a temptress...

I am wondering, do you find the images for your cards on the net and/or do you scan pictures in from magazines, etc. ? (I would really like to design my own deck as well, but I have no idea where to begin... 8)

hello Molly
i find the images on the net, i dont have a scanner... i transform them and put them together with photoshop (v5.5ME, although v7 is already out).
a great resource for images (which i've found only recently) is http://images.google.com. also, i found this page (http://artoftarot.com/create.htm) quite useful, plus it has links to some inspiring personal made decks.
good luck creating your deck :)

Hey Supletion,
Very cool!!! I like your cards a lot. I use PhotoShop5 to make my cards to, although I draw the image first and colour it in PhotoShop. I like to combine 'real' things too, like photos I have taken etc. What would I do without PhotShop??? :D

Supletion - I like your cards a lot. :)

I use Photoshop and PaintShop Pro both and gosh where would I be without my digital camera and scanner!

I've had good luck printing my cards on 200 gram photo paper - this seems to be a heavy enough stock that you don't have to worry about laminating or contact paper. Just feed it through one sheet at a time and your printer should be able to cope....

Thank you for the info! I think it will be a while before I actually do work on my deck. I have to develop an understanding for the meanings first.... meanwhile, I LOVE seeing the decks others have created on their computer. Really amazing technology these days!

I like these cards very much, supletion. Especially the Moon and Temperance. :) If I could give you one tip, it's to turn the resolution up, even if the pictures you use are small. It's the one thing I regret about my deck, the resolution of my images was low, even though I reduced the size before printing, and hence they look pixelly.

I would not suggest laminating your cards, I have a laminated deck, which cost quite a bit in all to produce, and I never use it because the cards feel thick and plastic, they aren't very pleasant to handle. Instead, I suggest you print on thin card, cut them out and are simply careful handling them. Simple card can be easily damaged, but it feels a lot more natural and pleasant to handle. I have a copy of my deck (see signature) printed on heavy paper (120 grms) and although it's far from perfect, I'm happier with it than with my laminated set.

Just thought I'd share my experience. Hope to see more of your cards later.

Ok. I can help you with your problem. I print out cards from my computer all the time. First i make a print of the card on paper. Then I find a index card and line it up with the card on the paper. Then I draw small slash marks across the corners so that there will be 2 slash marks on each side of the corner. Do this for all corners. Then using a knife cut the space inbetween the slashes making a slit for the corner of the index card to fit though. After your done with all 4 corners, insert the index card into the slits so the index card fit tightly. Put the whole piece of paper back into the printer in the right derection and print the tarot card again. If done correctly the tarot card should print right on the index card. Warnning- the card might jam in your printer if it isn't in the paper tightly, but nothing serios should happen.

I've never done it but if you want to try you might be able to use the envolope option on your printer if it has one.

If you have any questions just e-mail me at

but no pictures or downloads please

Talk to you later

Wow Enchanter! What a great idea. :)

I can see how that would work on many printers... unfortunately mine curls the paper... Don't think it would make it through...

Right, double feeding the same piece through on ours here also results in paper jams. Especially with anything smaller than the standard 8 1/2 x 11" size.

Actually mine curls the paper too, but if you do what I said before i should be able to go through the printer like a regular piece of paper.

I printed out my deck before it was published, right through my trusty Epson Printer.

Here's what I did....

You can buy high gloss, 2 sided, inkjet paper. Search google for a vendor. You can print the backs of the cards, turn the paper over and print the fronts.

Trim them out. You can buy a corner trimmer at the craft store to give your cards a rounded corner. (Just like the pros)

Here one last great step.

I bought a small card laminator from KMart. Not too much money. You can buy different sized pouches for the laminator in different thicknesses. This is to protect your cards from your moist fingers. Water will run the images.

Poof.... you'll have your deck and it will last for a good long time too.

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

Yours in the cards,
Joseph Martin

This is the toolbox I used in the creation of the art for the Quest Tarot. I used everything plus the kitchen sink.

I worked on a Mac computer with the software Photoshop, Bryce, Poser, Carrara 3D, Infini-D 3D. I used Photo Collage technique with hand drawn elements through a Pen pad and photo sources.

The images where hand shaded and highlighted with special coloring so that everything would "match" visually.

It was a lot of work to say the least.

Some cards would take me as little as 3 days while a couple of cards took months to complete. One card was done over so many times that I thought I would never finish it.

Good luck with your deck and art.

yours
Joseph

Hello Joseph Martin,

It is such a pleasure to see you here! I know you hear this all of the time but I absolutely love your Quest Tarot cards and the Compass guide. It's my favorite tool for divination and I use it daily for myself and for others. The readings are so accurate. I really meld with your creation and there's very few decks I can honestly say that about.

The artwork on your cards is exquisite...in fact, your deck inspired me to create a fourth deck on my computer. I know I am gushing like a fan but I cannot help it. :-)

Anyway, I hope to talk with you again.

Joy to you,
Maralee
