Greetings.
I'm going to shop for quite a few tarot decks and books, so I wonder if you guys could set up a book list with the 'best' books on the subject. I've tried scanning the forums, but it's slow, so I thought I'd do it the easy way. *s*
Thanx to all and be blessed.

(If you know the price and the best & cheapest place to obtain them, I would be grateful. Thanx.)

Two very good books are:

Living The Tarot, by Amber Jayanti. £2.99 (Despite its cheapness, it is a cassic, and very *very* good)

78 Degrees of Wisdom, by Rachel Pollack. Again, very *very* good.

I *highly* recommend: Tarot for Yourself, by Mary K. Greer. Really gets you into the cards.

For some other book recommendations:

Check out James Revak's "The Bookworm's Guide to Tarot", for a nicely organized and detailed list of Tarot-related books:
http://jwrevak.tripod.com/biblio/biblio_con.html

Tarot Passages has a good section on Tarot books:
http://www.tarotpassages.com/books.htm

Wicce's recommended books:

Have fun!

here's some of my favorites...
'Tarot: History, Mystery and Lore' by Cynthia Giles
'Tarot and the Journey of the Hero' by Hajo Banzhof
'The Element Tarot Handbook: Initiation Into the Key Elements of the Tarot' by Naomi Ozaniec

and i could never be without these...
'A Dictionary of Symbols' by J.E. Cirlot
'An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Traditional Symbols' by J.C. Cooper
'Jung and Tarot: An Archetypal Journey' by Sallie Nichols

and, of course...
'The Book of Thoth' by Aliester Crowley

I can second Greenman on the Cynthia Giles' Tarot: History, Mystery & Lore recommendation. So far that's the book I've learned from most.

I also have the Sallie Nichols' book but haven't read it yet.

I've read other books on tarot but didn't feel as strongly about them, although I did get quite a lot from the book that came with the Mythic deck; the book that came with the Arthurian Legend deck, and the book that came with the Faerie Oracle deck.

I also liked the Osho book a lot, but for different reasons.

I'd include the following:

The Joy of Sex by Alex Comfort, and
101 Uses For Olive Oil

Oops, wrong list. Never mind me. I'll be going now.

Greetings all!
Thanx for suggesting books, I've already ordered a few from amazon. But listen, why don't we vote for the best books? Sounds like a good idea? Set up a list no. 1--> I'm excited. *s* Blessed be.

In my opinion, the absolute best book on the Tarot, but by far not the easiest, is Meditations on the Tarot, published by Element.

Many of the other books already mentioned I would also rate as fair to very good.

Another introductory book not mentioned is Kaplan's Tarot Classic (by the same author as the three volume Encyclopedia of Tarot, and (co?-) owner of US Games).

I've heard alot of talk about the 78 Degrees... earlier as well, so maybe this is no.1 so far? Or maybe Tarot for Yourself? Heard alot of nice things about this one too.

Another one: Tarot Journeys, by Yasmine Galenorn. This book takes you through each card with excellent guided meditations, as though you were on a massive journey. It also comes with a CD of the first 2 meditations so you an listen to that and get the idea, if you want to record the meditations yourself.

I'll add my vote to 78 Degrees, Tarot for Yourself, and "Tarot and the Journey of the Hero".

I'll also add: "Tarot and the Tree of Life" by Isabel Kliegman
and "Power Tarot" by Trish McGregor. This one was by some 900 line readers, but I really like all the spreads in it.

Tarot for Yourself and all the rest by Greer will be my top, followed by 78 degrees, then the Connollys books (Handbook for the Apprentice, Joyrneyman, Master)

78 Degrees of Wisdom is a very good book but I'd like to mention some others I've found particularly useful for various reasons. ;D

The Book of Tokens by Paul Foster Case (indeed any tarot book written by him)

Tarot Spells by Janina Renee

Tarot Games by Cait Johnson & Maura D. Shaw

And for Divinerguy and Faunabay:

Modern Sex Magick by Donald Michael Kraig

:D Enjoy :D

my votes would be
1. tarot for yourself; greer
2. tarot and the journey of the hero by hajo(and the one he did on the thoth deck is also excellent)
3. learning the tarot by joan bunning
4. choice centered tarot by gail fairfield
5. 78 degrees of wisdom

my next suggestion would be if we buy any of the books compiled on this list then we must promise to buy these books from sites like amazon that support aeclectic forums.

I concurr with the books listed above but would also like to recommend a little known treasure I found ... The Truth About Tarot by Gerald Suster. It is short, sweet, to the point, and very clearly written ... my only criticism of it are the last 4 or 5 pages.

In order:
1. Tarot for Yourself
2. Tarot Constellations
3. The Truth About Tarot
4. 78 Degrees of Wisdom
5. And a book I have by Paul Foster Case which I cannot remember its name at the moment (will post later).
6. Qabalistic Tarot
