Also known as a "corpse flower," (because of its odor), the arum titan is blooming for the first time since 1939 in Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

They've got a live webcam link, too - for play by play action. ;)

Cool! Thanks for posting the link. I had heard of other bloomings overseas but they didn't have good pictures! It's really unusual looking!

I think it is really interesting to consider how "new" sweet smelling flowers are...some books I have read by dinosaur experts say that initially flowers smelled like rotting flesh in order to attract insects to pollenate them. Yuck!

i would love to be able to have a smell of it.......i wonder if it is really as nasty as it is supposed to be?

I imagine eight hours after the bloom is fully open the webcam would record the looks on the faces of those smelling it in person. . .

Edited to add: I've just discovered the blog about it. Apparently, the stench started about 8 p.m. last night and has gotten progressively worse.

Look at the guy lower right corner of the image with the hanky over his nose.

You know, they say men have a keener sense of smell than women do. . .I've always found that hard to believe.

It must be smelling pretty rank by now. Look at the difference in the distance the people in line are standing from the barriers today in the webcam shot below, as opposed to the one I posted yesterday.
