Mercury is a hermaphrodite, neither male or female, which makes it barren, and Virgo is a barren sign. Mercury's nature is traditionally cold and dry, which is melancholic (earth). Virgo is an earth sign. Mercury, when dignified, can represent an intellectual - Virgo is associated with studies and well spoken people. Mercury is the planetary symbol of the self taught - the person who can learn from books (Virgo and studies) without a teacher... I agree that you need to learn the language of Astrology but in the case of Virgo being barren, the symbolism is literally so.
Let's take another look at the "Symbolism of Astrology!"

Aries RAM domestic (may be wild)
Leo LION wild (not likely domestic)
Sagittarius CENTAUR mutant

Cancer CRAB fresh and salt water, land or sea
Scorpio SCORPION early amphibian, now land dweller
Pisces FISHES uniquely joined à la mammalian copulation

Libra SCALES a woman with the scales (man's work?)
Aquarius WATER BEARER a man carrying water (woman's work?)
Gemini TWINS a joyous but nonetheless amazing occurrence

Capricorn GOAT domestic (usually) prized as female for milk
Taurus BULL wild (even if domesticated) prized as male stud
Virgo A YOUNG WOMAN WITH A SHEAF OF WHEAT...?!?

*

I believe that Virgo was once represented symbolically by...
ISHTAR as a (mutant) Winged Lion with a Human Head,
Bull's feet and tail, boldly Brandishing a Sword of Power!

In effect: The Sphynx... in Her original Phoenician Glory. ;)

An innocent young female, performing domestic tasks,
might fit with the Air Signs (depicting humans) but NOT
the Mutable Earth Sign. I wonder why it was changed?

In scientific terms~an hermaphrodite is both partly male and female.
I believe in the Symbolic Language of Astology: Mercury is Sex-Less.

Mercury is without GENDER for it is too near and dear to The Sun. ;)

Also PLEASE... correct my mispelling in the title...
it should read SPHYNX and not "Shynx" :( Thanks!

done, thread is removed, title is changed.

Virgo represented by a silent feline in the shifting sands is very appropriate, now what would represent their emotional sensetivity?

'We may not call him (sic) either masculine or feminine, for he is either one or other joined to any planet, for if in conjunction to a masculine planet he becomes masculine, if with a feminine planet, then feminine, but of his own nature he is cold and dry and therefore melancholy; if with the good, he is good, with the evil planets ill' WILLIAM LILLY.

Virgo is not a 'person' it is a sign (label) which helps amongst other things to describe the condition of a planet. Now if you had said Venus, you might well be on to something. :)

You may have had your mind "made up" before reading
what was posted on this subject ;) care to look again?

PS: You might've thanked me for correcting your spellings.

Of course Virgo is a person ... if collective conciousness means anything.

Fulgour, why is Scorpion an early amphibian?

(I still think the animal of Scorpio should be the sting-ray).

"Scorpio" may be symbolised by the Eagle, Snake,
or Scorpion. It's the only Sign with three symbols.

Part of what I love about the Sign symbols is that
they actually make sense if you think about them.
That's why a young girl as "Virgo" doesn't work! ;)

As a mutable Sign, Virgo requires a 'mutant' symbol.
There's a wealth of irony to be found also, such as:

"Multi-cellular life evolved approximately 800 million years ago, and by the beginning of the Paleozoic period (600 - 265 million years ago), there was an explosion of life where sea creatures like corals, trilobites, primitive fish and eventually sharks abounded. Life remained confined in the oceans until primitive plants evolved. Arthropods like centipedes, spiders and...
scorpions advanced on to the land about 375 million years ago."

We can also be CERTAIN that ancient peoples were
not unaware of Evolution. It's too easy and obvious
and~there is evidence of it to be found everywhere.
