View Full Version : If money were no object, what deck?

The thread about the stick figure tarot got me wondering. So, if you could buy any OOP, or expensive deck(s), what would it/they be?

I would get Folchi's Carnival deck. I have no idea how much it runs when it's available, but I'm thinking it's quite expensive. But I love his art, and this deck lifts my spirits when I see it.
I would also love an old copy of the RWS, although not so old I'd be nervous about having it in my house. :D

Also the Greenwood, Dali, Pinocchio, and the Marvel, But those I will probably get eventually. And there are still copies available here and there.

No competition for me. I would definitely get the Stick Figure Tarot. It's very me, and I was so frustrated when I found out how hard it is to get a copy now.

Another expensive deck that I really like is the Healing Tarot featured on Tarot Garden right now. I saw the pictures and loved it. But it's $90! I can't afford that on my student budget.

Eh, well.

I have to agree that the carnival deck is lovely. But right now the one I want is the Norse. I'm hoping it will be re-released by Yule!

Oh, ya mean I gotta pick one? ;) The large Illuminated Tarot. One of these days when I get some cash I'll break down and buy the medium one, 'cause I just whimper at the artwork on that deck. But I just can't afford the bigger one. *sigh*

The Canosa Tarocchi is incredible -- you have excellent taste. Not only are the cards lovely, but the set comes with a huuuuuuge hardcover coffee-table book that has beautiful large-size reproductions of all the major arcana illustrations (and somewhat smaller reproductions of the minor arcana illustrations), along with explanatory information about the card symbolism (in Italian). It's one of my favorite collectors' sets.

The Venetian is also a wonderful deck -- small, but with great detail and fascinating historical references.

The URLs that come up in a general deck "quicksearch" on the Tarot Garden site, however, can't be copied-and-pasted as direct links to the found dataset, as the invisible form variable data isn't embedded in those links. Well, if Amerigo Folchi gets the rights back on his Fererra Tarot, than maybe I can afford it. Last time it was bid upon, it was three figures, bordering on the $300 range.

Jeanette,

Your flattery will get me in all sorts of trouble...

My imagination runs wild:

Me: "I must buy these five very beautiful decks now. I cannot wait any longer to own them!"
DH: "But dear, that money is needed for my emergency medical procedure. And for the baby's special formula. Plus, we must pay these bills or we will end up homeless!" *
Me: "But, I have excellent taste!"

*DH is fine. There is no medical emergency. Nor is there a baby. And the bills do get paid. :D

I haven't been posting here very long (ok, started yesteday), but have lurked on and off for about a year. Just figured out the whole vB code & [ url ] [ / url ] thing.

Oh, and Jeanette, I am that same 'Stasia' from the CT list & your own mailing lists. Saw you were active over here, came for a visit & pulled up a chair.

*LOL* perhaps I am dreaming then! I thought I had seen it on your website *LOL*. Well then I guess money would be a major object if I would need for him to create one *ROFLMAO* ... I will get back to you once I know what the heck I am talking about *ROFLMAO*.

Okies went back and found what the deck I was thinking of Tarocco Storico della Citta di Ferrara ... where ever I got this was Celtic I am clueless! ~shakes head~ ... but it would be cool if he did do a Celtic deck, and I am sure I would want it! ;)

Oh, what the heck -- the Linweave. :D

Actually, there's a bunch of anime-themed decks at Tarot Garden that I fantasize about, but the most beautiful -- and the only one with fully illustrated minors -- is the Clamp X. I presume it's made from various images in color mangas published by Clamp (someone correct me if I'm wrong -- maybe it is all one artist?). The images sometimes only vaguely approximate the meaning/s of the cards, but at least they do approximate them, unlike most "novelty" decks. That's my biggest froufrou drool-deck.

I've been daydreaming about the La corte dei Tarocchi and the I Gatti di Menegazzi.

I saw the mention of Pier Canosa in this thread and here's a way we can feast our eyes on the majors of his Genoa (?) tarot and the lovely art work:

www.ghosttour.it/

If you enter this website in the google search engine or search for "Pier Canosa" in any language, there's an option to do the 'translation'. That way you get the general subject matter and can navigate a bit.

Beautiful paintings. I notice this majors only is much less than the 78 full deck. And one can always dream!

If money was no issue, I would most of all want a old Rider Waite deck like the one on Ebay. Meaning the original 1910 print. If anyone would even want to part with his or her copy, because I can't image anyone wanting to part with those!

And otherwise, there are so many. The Frown Strong, the Minotarot, Pendragon Mother Tarot.. I could go on forever!!

I saw the mention of Pier Canosa in this thread and here's a way we can feast our eyes on the majors of his Genoa (?) tarot and the lovely art work:

www.ghosttour.it/

Don't hate me, but I'm fortunate enough to have two Canosa deck/book sets. He shows his work at a gallery in Prague and they sold me the last two they had. It was still expensive, but less so than usual.

The only thing I'd say is that the quality of card printing, while absolutely fine, is a bit ordinary (not as special as I'd expected). However the book more than makes up - great paper and printing and as Jeannette said, it's a HUGE book so you can really see the illustrations well.

I suppose one day I'll sell/trade the second copy (didn't really mean to buy two but it was one of those things where we were offered a tempting discount if we took both) but I'll always keep one - this is a "must have" deck and book for me. If you look at the artwork you'll see why - really, really gorgeous.

Yes, baba, it is about time this thread came to the present - I just discovered it thanks to you :)

My list would include (but, of course, not be limited to):

- the Butler Tarot
- the Full Moon Dreams Tarot
- the Thompson-Leng Tarot
- an early (I mean REALLY early) Rider-Waite
- everything by Il Meneghello
- the Alchemical Tarot
- the Tarot Swietlistej Drogi
- the Gaian Tarot and the Fine Art Tarot - but if money is no object I'd also commission the artists to create the minors for them as well!

I'd also commission Lo Scarabeo and Mr. Atanassov to create standard-sized and gold-detailed editions of the Cary-Yale Visconti and the Brera-Brambilla deck. I have the US Games Cary-Yale, but it's just too big, and I LOVE what was done with the Visconti-Sforza.

Gotta go check my lottery tickets again ...
QueenofPentacles

Edited to add: Folchi's Ferrara, Mithological and Sissi decks, medium Illuminated with iridescent colours, Jumbledance, Blue Rose, Hero's Journey, Animal, Odyssey, Minchiate di Firenze ...

and the Neoclassical 1811 di Gumppenberg was original and beautifully aged, like the Il Meneghello deck that I like so much...

I sometimes use one of my copies of the crisp and brighter out-of-print Il Solleone light yellow decks (the older Ancient Tarots of Lombardy from Lo Scarabeo look like these).

Anyway, the old 1811 was more than I had saved from different things, but I am glad to even to have seen scans of one that old and in relatively good condition.

I can always hope!

Yes, before Llewellyn released the full deck, there were handmade sets of the VR trumps. They were available on Sarah Ovenalls website. I only found out about them from reading a couple of the reviews on Tarot Passages.
