View Full Version : If you could design any tarot deck, what would it be like?

I really feel "called" to design a tarot deck someday....not for quite a while, when I've learned the tarot a bit better, but there are several I'd love to do. If you were to design a tarot deck or decks, what would they be like? What symbolism would you use, etc? For me:
The Vagrant Tarot - would feature photos of my friends and family either digitally enhanced, or copied in paint.
The Star Trek Tarot - the geek in me insists upon it. I'd use Klingons for Swords, Romulans for coins (ferengi would be more appropriate, but, alas, I don't like the ferengi ;) ), Humans for Wands and the Q continuum for cups. I'd incorporate different plot figures and characters from the series into the Major Arcana. This one I've got pretty much all filled out already.
The Pendragon Tarot - based on "The Pendragon Cylcle" of Arthurian novels by Stephen Lawhead. The only card I've sketched out for this one is Judgement, which is the destruction of Atlantis - which Lawhead describes in stunning detail.
How about you?

I have toyed around with this idea for years, but am waiting to find someone to work in collaboration with to do the deck. At this point I think It would be a fairy style deck with elemental correspondences and some very basic qabalistic concepts (if I can achieve that). By fairy style I mean I would use mer-folk in the suit of cups, sylphs in the swords, gnomes and brownies in earth, and I am still pondering fire but I am sure there would be some dragons in there *LOL*. The majors would be archetypes of the same nature. I would not be looking at making a cute sugary sweet deck, but one with a lot of depth.

Wow Jewel, that sounds like a phenomenal deck...when you publish it, make sure to let me know so I can buy one...or more hehe ;)

If I could design a couple of decks, the first would be called "The Tarot of the Four Worlds" and be a Qabalistic deck using primarilly astrological, alchemical, Kabbalistic (letter and angelic sigil) correspondences based on The Golden Dawn's given attributions because they are the most comon. It would be designed for intemediate tarot studies and user-friendly.
The second would be called "The Nachash Tarot" and it would be a LHP and shadowy deck, intended to be a tool for personal contemplation and magic. Nachash is a Biblical Hebrew word with a triadic meaning. Pronounced as "naw-khawsh" it means serpent, as in the Serpent in the Garden. Pronounced as "naw-khash", it means enchant/enchanter, divinate/divinator. Pronounced as "nakh-ash", it means "an incantation or augury". This deck would be designed for advanced tarot studies/magical work and explore concepts like antinomianism, apotheosis, conciousness, Neters, Xepher, etc. The images would not borrow much from traditional decks, less so than Tarot of the 4 Worlds. The idea behind it is a controversial one- that the Serpent in the Garden of Eden was not lying, and that each of us, through applied consciousness, can become "as God."
Unfortunately for me, I am a poor artist. So I'll have to hope that an amazing artist comes into my life some day and would be inspired enough to create the pictures based off my ideas. I need my own Lady Frieda Harris or Pamela Colman. :)
An ironic one to be post after Laurel's, but Ive always wanted to design a Christian deck. Im not completely satisfied with any of the ones out there, most you either have to know a lot of symbolism to get the Christian meaning behind them, or are catered to a specific group, like Tarot of the Saints.
My deck would use major Biblical figures of the Old and New Testament for the Majors, appropriate Bible quotes with the minors, and actual royal families in the courts except for Id replace the Knight (which doesnt quite fit with a Biblical deck) with an archangel card.
Ive actually got much of it, others than the minors, figured out, but I dont have any drawing talent to actually make it. Maybe Ill take some art classes in college when i get to go and make it hehe

Tarot of the Circus Without Rings. I'd streamline the name a little. Not a Barnum and Bailey deck -- something with more of an edge to it. I actually have some images in mind, but am stumped as to the suit symbols. There really aren't that many cup shapes involved in the acts I know of -- at least, hardly any with any circus significance. And there is only so much to be done with swords. I am considering a mix within suits of objects with similar shapes, like Wheel of Change does, but I'm not sure. Input and ideas are welcome!

Are you going for just a circus feel or a sort of "carnie" feel deck? You know, like a fortune teller as the high priestess ot the Ringmaster as the Emporer.
Or you can divide the suits us in this way: Trapeze for wands (4 on the trapeze, 5 on the trapeze), knife throwers or sword swallowers for swords, water divers or clowns (with squirting flowers) for cups, and carnie booths for coins/pentacles.
I myself would want a gargoyle deck. I'd need help with the art medium since I really am only good at flat out collaging. I have it in my minds eye to have all night scenes, stars tweeked with gold gilding, nothing but marble (for humans) and rock (for gargoyle)statues and gothic-like archetecture representing the figures in the cards and maybe outlines in live looking roses or ivy. Like a really big moonlit garden.....
Robin Hood! Sorry I know it's silly but I love it. hehe :)
Or if I could, I would commission Graeme Base to have fun with designing a tarot deck. Even if it was crazy, I would still buy it. :)
Or commission Margaret Walty! Her paintings can be viewed here Margaret Walty (http://www.dataday-computers.com/walty/)

You and me both Laurel! Who knows ... when the time is right I am sure a willing artist will appear ;)
If you have the will to learn, you could learn to draw and paint Jewel. The most valuable ingredient is imagination (and experience, I guess, when it comes to designing a tarot deck), and I know you have that.... the technical side can certainly be learnt given enough time and perseverance.
Perhaps that willing artist is hidden within you right now:-)
Well... there is one I've been mulling over for several months now... I have an interest in the history of war, especially WWII (since my father was in this one). I thought a deck made with images from 1939 through 1945 might be an interesting one to put together and maybe even use, though I suppose it would be a rather "dark" deck.
My Death card I'm thinking would be the arial photo taken from Hiroshima. The Hanged Man would probably be Mussolini hanging by his feet in the town square. The Devil would probably be an appropriate picture of Adolf Hitler....
Perhaps the magician could be Patton.
I wonder what Stalin could be?
I wonder what the chariot could be, there are so many options.
"Hanged Man would probably be Mussolini hanging by his feet ", that is a grand notion :-)
As a deck I can certainly see it working, dark yes, but it would be a great deck of warning.

To decks I'd really like to create would be photography-based decks called, "The All-American Tarot" and the "Oh Canada! Tarot" (to reflect my mother's and my father's families, respectively."
I'd definitely use the world trade centre as The Tower. I'd use figures from American and Canadian history for the major arcana and court cards, along with various events (I think I'd use either the Saturn V Rocket, or the Space Shuttle, for the Chariot in the American version).
I know I'd use greenbacks/loonies for the coins suit, and I'd associate the suits with different parts of the two nations (ie, east coast, west coast, deep south, and midwest for the american deck).

AmounrA you are so sweet! thank you for your kind words. I can paint OK (according to my one and only painting *LOL*), but the truth is that I am some what of a perfectionist. I would really want to work in collaboration with someone who already knows how and preferably someone who is also passionate about Tarot. I am much better at writting ... I definetly would write the accompanying book! I believe that (the writer) is the willing artist hidden within ;) ... and she is DYING to get out and I am letting her go!
Trogon ... There are many people who like dark decks, and as AmounrA pointed out the deck would be nice for warnings. I was thinking you could use an infantry soldier as the Fool ... an innocent taking on the journey.

Hi guys,
I'm a passionate collector of WW1-WW2 era books, clothes etc, and I would love to do a tarot deck based on that era. My particular hope was to do one based on Boys & Girls Own Annuals from between the wars, and/or Queen Elizabeth's Childhood & Coronation (>1952).
Unfortunately, I hit a major stumbling block. Copyright in many countries (including the UK & US) is now 70 years after the artist/photographer's death. And the fact that it was common to not name the artist/photographer in books & magazines back in those days does NOT mean you can get away with using the images. You have to identify the copyright holder somehow and then prove they died over 70 years ago, or that they could be reasonably assumed to have done so. This means that you pretty much have to stick with pre-WW1 (the Victoria Regina deck is a good example).
If you're doing a deck for yourself, then you could overlook the copyright issue as many modern collagists do - but it would be a real shame if you ended up with something that everyone loved that couldn't be published because it was impossible to get copyright releases. Any commercial publisher will (or should) insist on having the issue of copyright covered in the contract.
Don't mean to throw cold water on the idea, as it's a very good one - you just might have to wait a few more decades :)
I have just done a quick web search for sites giving copyright free pictures of WWII, there was loads of them.
I have not checked them all out, but heres two that caught my eye.
http://www.historylink101.com/1/world_war_II/pictures.htm
http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/photos.html
So it looks like copyright would offer no barrier to such a project :-)
(Jewel, I was trying to think of something for the fool, and was looking to hard ! Your idea of an infantry soldier is superb!)

Hi AmounrA,
Neither of those links you gave are totally 'copyright free' - both specified usage and/or listed copyright owners, especially to get the higher res versions needed for a deck. Pretty standard for web-based images, they might give you a teeny low-res look at it, but you pay for rights to use a higher res version (eg, as a print, high-res file or transparency). The second one you listed, FDR library, have been pretty generous with the image size, though, so they might be usable.
Note: even if a source doesn't list copyright/usage (say in old books, or on a lot of websites), unless they actually own the copyright themselves and are expressly giving it away as 'copyright free' then it isn't. "Public domain" is legally a very grey area, and I don't blame publishers for being overcautious about it in these litigious times.
You may well be able to get permission to use such images (for free) from the copyright owner, but be aware that a publisher will insist on getting that in writing for every image, or part of an image, used.
It's a good idea to collect such permissions as you go, as trying to track down your sources once the deck is completed could be an impossible task, given the transient nature of the web.
On the other hand, don't always believe that an organisation owns rights to a pic because they say they do. Many pics whose copyright has long ago expired still have it claimed by the owner of the artwork who charge royalties for their usage. For example, if you could take a good quality photo of the Mona Lisa yourself, you'd have the right to make posters of it without paying the Louvre a cent, since da Vinci died more than 70 years ago. No wonder they don't like you going into galleries with a good camera & tripod ;)
Good luck with the idea of a WW2 deck, it could definitely be great. I'd be really interested in the Queens especially, where you could explore womens' roles in the war.
I love historical themes, they add a different perspective to the whole way you use a deck.
PS - I love your own deck, AmounrA. Really lush!

Hey guys, you don't have to be able to draw or paint to design your own cards! We have computers now! :D If you haven't yet, look at my page to see how I managed to make a deck without letting my complete lack of technical artistic skills bother me. Look up, the sky is blue!
BTW: I've also been thinking of how the WTC would make a perfect 'tower'. Is that morbid?
Nope not morbid i agree, i mentioned elsewhere that i thought it would be great in about 10 years when the edge wore off.
In fact one person is already using it, tho its hard to recognize with all the effects she puts on her cards.

Hello,
That second link I posted,'Franklin D Roosevelt..." seems fine enough. If you click on wwII, then click browse there are extensive galleries of pictures. I have downloaded some and the quality seems very good. It also says "All photographs are copyright free and in the public domain".
The added fact that it's a dot edu, rather than a dot com makes me think it is trustworthy source. It also says--"The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum is one of ten presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration." -- basically the U.S goverment.
I think using and manipulating the photos [thousands of them] from this site would pose no problem of any copyright infringement.

Just for fun I would create a deck revolving around the story and characters of my favorite anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion". I just love the beautiful art and the captivating storyline and I think anyone who's seen the anime or read the manga would agree! ;)
I am a HUGE travel bug and so I'd love to design some kind of tarot deck to reflect that. Now I've never actually considered this before reading this post so what I type now is coming right off the top of my head.
But perhaps for the minors, suits could be say AsiaPacific, Europe, Americas and Middle East? Each suit could follow a journey through the different countries in the region but looking at historical events.
The majors could be either natural or man made wonders from around the world? Not sure if it would work or not, might have to do some more thinking. Perhaps linking it to historical events might work better?
I think travelling is a great way of learning about both the world and about yourself. Travelling for me has been a great method of self-discovery, as has the tarot, and therefore I'm sure they could link together well.
Some great ideas in this thread guys!

i actually have a lot of decks i plan to make. currently there are my 2 works in progrees: the masque tarot (where all human characters save one wears a mask for different symbolic purposes0, and my anime deck. by the way, they can be viewed
at: http://necromance.topcities.com
and although there is an already existing majors only necromantic tarot (lovely!), it's OOP and hard to find, i'd like to make a Tarot of the Necromancer. a Tarot of the Fates (featuring a three-suit minor arcana) is still being conceptualized. also, a Filipino Mythic Tarot, a Filipino Cultural Tarot, Aswang Tarot, Four Seasons tarot, Rayearth Tarot (Pollux, you mught be interested in collaborating with me on thsi one :) ), Bt'x tarot, Tarot of the Armageddon, Tarot of the Four Horsemen, perhaps a Byzantine Tarot, and a lot more!!! :)

I have been thinking that I am surprised that I haven't come across a Yoga tarot deck. Is there one?
I haven't thought much about the possible attributions - maybe -
Majors -
The Fool - lotus pose
The Magician - breath of fire (pranayama)
The High Priestess - seated forward bend
The Hierophant - yoga mudra
The Wheel of Fortune - karma, (or maybe wheel pose) too obvious?
Hanged man - headstand or possibly breath retention(pranayama)
Death - shavasana(corpse pose) too obvious?
The Moon - downward dog pose
The Sun - tall mountain pose
The World - OM
Maybe the court cards could be yoga masters, like Patanjali. I am not sure about the pips or suit attributions. Maybe I could use the doshas for the suit attributions and spices or food combos for the pips. I'm still learning about Yoga, so there could be other possibilites.
What do you guys think?

laural--
i've been studying tarot and (c)(k)qabala for about the last twenty years. i've made several starts at decks, but have never been satisfied with them.
your visions sound like what i've been attempting to do. i see a web-work of inter-relations that i have just not quite pinned down.
i've attached a pencil rendering of the fool. i'd love to attempt manifestation of your visions.

Hi,
I've been thinking about "Tarot of the Trees" (ok, I'd have to come up with a title that wasn't quite so lame.)
Each major would be a specific tree species, for example, Strength would be Tree of Heaven (alianthus altissima), because this tree can grow from anywhere, even the sides of buildings (!) but it is also very graceful and beautiful.
Minor suits would be a tree part, like seeds, leaves, flowers, fruit? Well, I haven't thought that through too much...
My other idea was a tarot deck based on "The Mysts of Avalon" but there seems to be an overkill of Arthurian-based decks. I did have a fun afternoon once trying to figure out which characters would fit each of the Majors.
Great question, thanks for asking it!

What a great idea Pixie! I would love a "tree" deck! Or a mushroom one! I know there is a mushroom one on the Tarot Garden website, but it's majors only. Anyway! I hope your idea materializes itself oneday! :)

Raven: That sketch is so amazing! I really like the action in it. What color scheme would you be using? Would you be interested in working on a yoga deck with me?
Pixienyc: I also really like the tree idea. I just traded a book about Qaballah, I can't recall the entire name of it but the author is Will Parfitt. He has an index in the back that correlates the sephira with different species of trees.
Here's a couple of images from a set of majors I worked on last year. I called it 'The International Icon Tarot'. It's a hybridization of the standard Waite/Smith symbology with the bowling-ball-headed figures found on international signage in airports and on restroom doors. Sounds pretty stupid, I know, but it actually made for a fairly elegant deck.
(c&p the following huge address, and you should find 'The Fool' and 'The Magician'.)
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/isisish/vwp?.dir=/Yahoo!+Photo+Album&.dnm=the+fool.jpg&.src=bc&.view=l&.done=http%3a//briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/isisish/lst%3f%26.dir=/Yahoo!%2bPhoto%2bAlbum%26.src=bc%26.view=l
I really like it, rota! It is very clean in design...hey, maybe it could become a real international sign! It could signify, "Tarot Cards Read Here!" :D
Ravenswing, I would love to see you continue to draw in the style of your Fool card sketch! You've included lots of eye-catching elements in it.
I'd actually started a ST: Next Generation deck, but alas, the few cards I'd done and all my notes were lost in a hard disk crash! Wah! I may start over again, but not for awhile. I've also been thinking of a separate ST: Voyager deck, perhaps with only the Majors.
I do have an Ace of Disks that I designed a few years ago, while trying to create my own deck...I guess I'm good at starting projects, but lousy at finishing them! ;) I was going to make the Disks suit more about the body and nature than about material wealth and security.
BTW: The quote may be too small to read...it goes something like this: "Anybody who has survived his childhood has enough information to last him the rest of his days." by Flannery O'Connor.
Peace,
Melvis

Hello, I'm new to this forum but I've been struggling with an idea for a tarot deck of my own as well. I plan on painting/drawing based on my favourite victorian paintings. I seem to have some talent for the arts, I just don't know computers...
I actually have almost all 78 scenes in my head and only have to start creating in the material world.
I do have some problem which some of you might be able to help me with;
I seem to have the choice between drawing, in perfect detail or painting with vibrant colors since I don't have the money to paint on large undergrounds. What would you prefer in a deck? detail or color?

Rota, you and I seem to have been working from the same idea! Have you seen my 'simple tarot'? It's a bit darker (with black backgrounds) and the figures are usually only heads, but there's a lot of similarities there. I really like your style, as well. Can you show us the rest? Do you want to put them on a webpage? (I can help)
Willie (follow the www button below)
I'm making my dream tarot deck. Three words. ANIME TAROT BABY!!! ^_^ Sorry...it's a lot of fun though!

I happen to be a very, very visual person who cannot draw, paint, sculpt, or digitally render. The only thing I seem to have some talent with is collaging. I know that a David Eddings Belgariad/Malloreon deck would be workable (when I first thought it up, it took me about five minutes to come up with viable characters and events for all the majors), but it would only be really significant to people who knew the series, and it would pretty much demand a fantasy-art style. So if I were to actually make a deck it would have to be something quite different from that.
An Alphonse Mucha deck would be fantastic, but I doubt his descendants would appreciate it much
I like the idea of a deck that is all about movement, or travel, or specific actions; but that's very abstract and I don't know how I would implement it. The Kinetic Tarot does have a ring to it, though :)
Now that I've looked over your Simple Tarot, I can certainly see some similarities! Similar wavelength, indeed.
As I mentioned, I only have the major Arcana of this 'International Icon Tarot' idea, but I'd be willing to make them available online. You said you might be able to help put them on a page somewhere? I'm not web-savvy enough to know how to put these onto a page, but I could certainly email them or upload them to an ftp site.
I shopped these around to only tepid interest, and so felt no further urge to complete any further cards. Loved doing them, though. It's such a charge to figure out how to 'hybridize' the Tarot's eternal symbology with a contemporary art style, and always a surprise to see what appears when you're done.
If you do want to place them on a page, just let me know where to direct them. I'd like to get other informed reaction to them.

If I could actually draw well, I would try to create an Elizabethan tarot deck. Henry the VIII be the Devil?Tower of London-the tower?
The Christian deck sounds interesting. maybe have Mary be the HP? or the Empress?
I have wondered about maybe the art of John Waterhouse and/or Rubens as a tarot deck, or Suza Scalora (fairy photographer)?
I have also been toying with the idea of designing my own tarot deck!
I have been thinking of traditional RWS majors, something similar to the Ancestral Path tarot, and then using mythological creatures for each of the suits....dragons for wands, phoenix's for swords, but the last two...maybe unicorns for cups...?
I would also like to do an X-men tarot! I have planned out the majors, and thinking of famous battles for the minors...The Phoenix Saga for Wands, battle with Apoclypse for swords, and again, don't know what to do for the rest!
I've been working on something I like to call the "Ghost Tarot" though I'm hoping inspiration will strike for a better name.
Just as an example, 'The Chariot' has become 'The Ghost Train' and 'The Tower' is now 'The Haunted House'.
It's not totally random assignation, honest. I have a whole system of meanings evolving out of this design. Really. I do.
wands become Clubs
swords become Spears
pentacles become Shields
cups become Helmets
Majors become figures from Norse stories and mythology: Freya, Wotan, Baldur, Loki, Fenris, the Frost Giants, the Norn Queen... the list is long, and could include Wagner's 'Ring' imagery or even Beowulf and Grendel.
Or did someone already think of this one?

In the Templar Tarot, the High Priestess is Mary Magdalen, but I think regular-Mary might make a good Empress... although :| there is that issue of her apparent virginity.
rota, Clive Barrett's Norse Tarot features much of that pantheon, although the majors are mostly events involving the pantheon, as opposed to focusing on one person each. And some of the peripheral players like the Frost Giants aren't touched on at all (although Strength is Odin binding Loki's son the wolf - I forget his name). So a Viking Tarot sounds very feasible :)
I need some help for my Haunted Tarot. I'm having trouble with my minors- everything seems to fit except the suit of Pentacles, Disks, whatever. The best idea I've had has beem Coffins, as they represent the spirit's ties to the material world. Any thoughts? Oh yeah, and:

Great minds think alike! I am actually using skulls for cups. In my tarot deck design, that is. Ahem.

::::::::::::::::::::::
ew! funny!
Still, skulls work great for pentacles. Just draw them with a big star scratched into the top of the cranium. Creepy!
Maybe there's some other cool option for cups... How about cauldrons? They could have witch brew and tentacles spilling out, or Addams Family-ish carbon dioxide fumes coiling out of them. Or maybe wells, or windows? Or how about Edward Gorey's cremation urns, all brass with cryptic inscriptions?
Or, if you're just DEAD set on using skulls for cups, how about family crests or shields for pentacles?
Just trying to be (heh heh heh) helpful...! (scream of cackling laughter)

I like the idea of family crests- shades (sorry) of Kutna Hora.
