i have them, but i really only "use" them for looking at and giggling a bit and then i rush off and re-read passages from alice in wonderland again.
i did however do a reading with them once. and it went so so.
it is a neat deck if you are an Alice fan (and who isn't?) but really, as a theme deck it is not among the most successful
take the halloween tarot or example - as a theme deck that one is a lot better and easier to read.

so in my opinion - alice is a deck you CAN read with - but perhaps it is best suited for the collector.

I used to have them, lost them in a move, and they are great to giggle at. The 10 flamingos in the dead guys back was a riot. My husband gave rthem to me when i was first starting to learn, but i couldnt learn on those they were just too silly. At least they were memorable :)

I double that sentiment. I saw that 10 of Flamingos and I just couldn't keep a straight face.

I cant read with this deck, though I like it much. How do you read with a deck that is based off of nonsense in the scholarly sense, where the inspiration puts up meaning down, down meaning up, and interesting opposites in between?

Cool, is there a tarot Alice as well? I saw a a Alice in Wonderland-playing cards-deck in BKK. :)

It seems like I'm the only one who has never seen Alice in Wonderland. I wanted to watch it until my sister told me about the author, and my teacher said that one of her students got scared watching the movie. I was wondering though, what kind of style is the deck?

I am a huge fan of the works of Lewis Carrol, and I have a large collection of Wonderland stuff...

including three copies of the Wonderland tarot!

I have used it a lot at various times in my life (it seems to go in cycles) and everytime I use them, I adore the readings I get.
They are fun and whimsical but can also be as rude as the Duchess or as brutally honest as Humpty Dumpty. :)

I Love them! They do elicit giggles...but give damn fine readings as well....

Actually just yesterday I was looking at this -- got it a few years ago, haven't used or viewed it much, and was deciding whether or not to put it on my trade list. Verdict: No! MINE!! I can see why it'd be funny to many people and I think the presence of giggle-decks in a person's life is a good thing; to my surprise the PoMo has turned out to be the one I laugh at most. But personally upon "reviewing" it I became swept up in its style (which, Eyes of Night, closely mirrors the original illustrations for the two books) and stunned by what a successful RWS clone it is. I want to work with it. :| Just further evidence of my immaturity perhaps.

I love the Wonderland Tarot, and use it sometimes, but sparingly, because I think it“s out of print??? A perfect girls first deck. Good for small hands too.

I think what they said about the author are lies. He had relationships with grown women, and he never married because he had to support all his unmarried sisters. There is a good website about him and "Alice in Wonderland".Dutch,I think.

What is the use of a book without pictures or conversations??

I had heard of the alice deck but not seen it. Read this thread & thought I would pop off for a look.

IT'S ONE OF THE SCARIEST FLIPPIN THINGS I HAVE SEEN FOR A LONG TIME !!

I would definitely get nightmares from that.

Don't worry, US Games still has it for sale on their site -- and marked down a bit, too, implying a large quantity sitting around -- so if you go to Amazon via Aeclectic here, everything should be pants. Er, that may not be the correct use of the term "pants."

Since March 2007 I have been collecting Alice in Wonderland books to go with the Wonderland Tarot. I also bought a Lo Scarabeo playing card deck with Alice artwork by Jesus Blasco. My trouble was that I couldn't track down a copy of the Wonderland, so a thoughtful member here found it and gave it to me as a gift. So now I'm really over the moon with delight.

I'm still missing one used book I ordered from a bookseller on ABE called "The Other Alice." It doesn't look like it's coming, but here is a scan of my other things, including a lovely plastic white rabbit.

The books are:

- The Annotated Alice by Martin Gardner with all the original John Tenniel illustrations; includes Through the Looking Glass
- Alice in Pop-up Wonderland by J. Otto Seibold, illustrator
- Alice au Pays des Merveilles with illustrations by Dusan Kallay; includes Through the Looking Glass (French edition with some of the most gorgeous illustrations I've ever seen.)
- Lewis Carroll: A Biography by Morton N. Cohen (I greatly enjoyed this--I bought an ex-library copy used.)

Yes thanks, mine is an even more updated one. As I understand it, there was the Annotated Alice in 1959, then More Annotated Alice in 1990 and then The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Version in 2000 which is the one I have, and actually includes both previous books plus some additional discoveries.

This guy Martin Gardner much eat, sleep, and breathe Lewis Carroll. Talk about leaving a mark on society by giving us these terrific annotations. It is packed full of interesting stuff.

I think it is a terrific deck. You get ever so much more from you readings if you read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Alice Through the Looking glass.

I am ashamed to admit that I'd forgotten the Duchess and the baby/pig and the pepper until I read the book again. You need the book for sure to increase your enjoyment of the subtleties.

I also found that reading the Lewis Carroll biography enhanced the whole thing for me--increased the connection so to speak.

Hello. Can those of you who have the Wonderland Tarot tell me if there is a companion book or booklet? I just bought a new deck, sealed, and it comes with a sheet of paper that has a word from Stuart Kaplan which simply says, many decks are unique but this is how most decks view the cards, and then gives basic and general card interpretations useful for any deck.

But when I read the review on Aeclectic, I understood there to be a book that detailed and interpreted each card, so I am confused. I have looked on Amazon and other sources and cannot find either a deck set, or anything that says there is an additional LWB or companion volume. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

There's a leaflet printed in Spanish and English in the box with the cards, but no actual book.

That's why it's helpful to have a copy of the actual Lewis Carroll books "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass."

A couple of examples from the leaflet:

The Chariot - Victory, force of personality, determination, will, conflicts resolved. Reversed: Weakness contradiction, energies divided.

Six of Cups - Fond childhood memories, inheritance, New relations and situations relate to the past. Reversed: Let go of the past and move forward.

So, conventional interpretations that have nothing to do with specific characters or scenes on the cards. You therefore need a copy of the Lewis Carroll books to sort it out and relate these interpretations to the stories and characters depicted on the cards.

As far as a book goes for this deck...you need only use whatever book you would to interpret the RWS (as it's very heavily based on it)

and copies of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

That's all you need! :D

Oh dear, oh dear, noticing this thread makes me need to finally shell out $$$ for this deck . . .

I've been putting it off for years.

It is inevitable though. I'm an Alice (parents big Carroll fans  ).

As that was Punchenilla's 888 post, that pretty well seals her fate as 'Yes she must buy Wonderland' ;)

My wonderland came yesterday. I opened it at lunch in my office and nearly fell over laughing at the ace of flamingos alone. But I got it together long enough to draw a card for a deck interview and got Strength.

This deck features a unicorn cavorting with a lion instead of Alice herself, as one might expect, against a backdrop with a mountain. I actually think the unicorn symbol is better than that of the usual RWS "maiden."

So the Wonderland seems like it will be a good deck for me -- fun and good! :)

Ages ago, when the deck first came out, there was a book from the deck creators (Christopher and Morgana Abbey). It began by telling you to go out and read both books. It was brilliant. It explained the corrolations of the images...

But in the last printing or so...the publishers (who I shalt not name) put in the generic crap LWB that should be burned.

The deck is brilliant btw!

yeah, Umbrae, it looks like a nice deck. Tell that Dan guy that ordering from Tarot Garden is good -- the package actually arrived a day earlier than expected. Fast shipping from the USPS! Now that's a miracle.

I first purchased this Deck in 1997. It is the only one that I had for a very long time. Up until I purchased a copy for Rosyelf (here), about a year and a half ago, the LWB was the one written by the Deck's creator. I am very disappointed that the later printings did not include this book because it explains in some detail what the artist/creator intended in making the deck.

It does appear that the creator did not have enough time to finish in detail the description for each card in the deck.

In this instance, I do believe that LWB is necessary to help with the read.

I call this my "brutally honest" deck, and it is still my favorite!

I hope that U.S. Games will consider re-publishing. They do have a link on here on Aelectic for those of you who might want to pester them for a copy.

This is odd - even though the deck is still in print ($18 at us games, cheaper elsewhere), about 5 different resellers on Amazon.com are trying to sell it for around $65. :bugeyed:

Can anyone figure out why? Or is it just a case of their hoping that a sucker is born every minute?

I own this deck and enjoy it. The first thing I did was reread both books after I bought the deck.

I have an order currently in at Borders for the deck. Their warehouse is out of the deck so they are trying U.S. Games.

I got a notice from Borders. The Deck is OOP.

As for reviews, this was the only deck I had for years because I like the Alice stories. The read from the deck can be dark and brutally honest (if you use the LWB that came with it). I think the creators of the deck "got" Lewis Carroll!

Funny you should say that Aerin, but I was in Spain recently and saw two copies of this in different bookshops and they didn't look like old editions, but could have been, I suppose. It would surprise me if they did reprint it, I never had this one down as a big seller...

It is OOP.... so those decks may be good value. (There is a Manga deck as well apparently http://mangaart.com/p/h?u/aa/shop/cate/0/shop/0/t/33/p?1 and I also found a 22 Majors wooden one with the Rackham pictures http://www.enchantedoak.com/tarotstore/alicetarot.html)

No, the drawings aren't really that special on the deck which is a shame (missed opportunity IMO).

I was just wondering because of the offer prices for this deck on different sites.

ETA: There seem to be two printings, one with a good LWB by the author (perhaps this one????? http://www.wizardnumerology.co.uk/store/rare-oop-vintage-tarot/rare-oop-vintage-tarot-cards-/wonderland-tarot-deck-oop-htf/showitemAAWT.aspx) and one with a generic throw-it-away-or-it-gets-you-grumpy US Games generic LWB. The former is £££ more than the latter.

Hi Aerin,
I think it was the Whimsical that is being reprinted, maybe you are confusing the 2 decks?

I was going to buy them, but ended up buying the Tarot of the Tsar and Ancient Tarot of Lombardy and a bundle of other things. I found it easy to de-enable myself from the Alice in W deck. I just knew it would be a "collector“s deck" which I would never read with...
