Thanks Gavriela,

Looks: 2 of wands Devil

I think he is dark haired and handsome - attractive in a seductive, alluring and wicked way - I think he has a lot of energy and drive - and a strong countenance

Personality: 9 of Cups 5 of cups

He was a great host and the life of the party, generous, warm and inviting, and also suffered with bouts of depression and melancholy and regret. He vascillated from wanting to be around a lot of people to wanting complete solitude and quiet reflection. An alcoholic

Career: 8 of cups queen of cups
I think he walked away from it - having given it his all. I think he was creative, sensitive and intuitive - he loved beauty and the arts.....maybe he was a playwright? or a painter?

Family: 4 of cups Magician

He didn't want to be tied down - I think he had many love affairs - I think he was very tempted and was the magician about it. Ithink he never found what he was lookin for. I think he was unmarried and didn't have children....

That's what I get.....

Male, born mid-ninteenth century. Cards for looks, personality, career, family, or whatever you like. Reveal on Thursday, how does that sound?

okay, here goes: Using my Gilded Tarot

LOOKS: 6 wands reversed, 5 swords reversed, the hanged man reversed
fair skinned, reddish brown hair, possibly a mustache. tall and lean, strong and good looking.

PERSONALITY: Ace of wands, Wheel of Fortune Reversed, King of Wands reversed
The Ace of Wands gives me the impression that he is an opportunist. mainly because the ace of wands suggests opportunities coming to you. Because the WoF reversed card suggests he must have had a lot of bad luck, I'm also going to say that he's a man that does not give up easily and so he's strong willed, courageous. the King of Wands reversed suggests that he's also somewhat grumpy. That he's not a very happy guy, probably because things don't turn out for him the way he wants them to. As a King, maybe he likes to be in control, so is he also controlling?

CAREER: 6 swords reversed, page of swords reversed, 5 cups reversed
The page of swords first, make me feel like he's an actor. It was just the first thing that came to my mind when I turned over this card. However, I know that pages generally bring messages, and being a sword, not always good messages. this page is generally thought of being revengeful and not always honest, (sounds a bit like a politician now, :D) and he could be a reporter who doesn't quite report all the news, only the stuff that will sell the story. The 6 swords rev. tells me he had hoped to travel for his job, but because of his luck, he never quite made the trips. The 5 of cups reversed indicates that he was sorry over this loss of being able to travel to make his career, but the reason he was unable to was due to some important family obligations---i'm guessing? I do feel his career was wrapped around communications and I believe he probably wrote for either a newspaper, magazine or maybe books. The actor bit could be relating that he could really get into the characters he wrote about possibly.

FAMILY: emperor reversed, 5 pentacles, the moon
well with the emperor reversed here, i feel like he was married, but maybe he did not exactly run the family. i think he had to share control of the family with another, (his spouse? another family member?). the 5 of pentacles show that they had 1 child, possibly a daughter, and times were rough for them. The moon also indicates this family had good times and bad times together. These cards also make me want to include into his personality that he was weak of mind/skill and impulsive as well. I think these two characteristics led him and his family to not having as great a life as they could have had. This also led him to not being as successful as he had wanted to be.

okay, so Looks: tall, lean, strong and good looking, fair skinned, reddish brown hair, poss. wore a mustache.

personality: an opportunist, unlucky, courageous, not willing to give in or give up. impulsive. tendancy to be grumpy and unhappy, can be controlling.

career: upon re-looking at the cards, I'm thinking a writer of some sort, most likely for a newspaper, magazine or books he wrote, or maybe plays (which would bring in the acting bit too)

family: married, with 1child--a girl. not always as successful as he had wanted to be, and so they had it difficult at times.

I'm not very good at guessing the who usually, but Mark Twain comes to mind for me here. However, he & his wife did have more then one child, and Mark Twain did travel frequently.

Looks- Page of Wands R- Smooth, unruffled, but perhaps with a shade of dishonesty around the mouth. His mouth is what reveals him when he lets his guard down. Disguises his feelings and aware of how looks might give him away. Perhaps sharp featured, foxy. One raised eyebrow? Perhaps hid his mouth with a beard or mustache. Probably always looked younger than he was.

Personality- Ace CoinsR - This card gives a definite message. Money did not bring him happiness, or corrupted him. He may have been miserly, or chased unattainable dreams of riches. Money was uppermost in his thoughts. I have had a sudden thought that he was physically disabled or wounded, or suffered from some infirmity that made it difficult for him to move. An immobility issue.

Career- ChariotR- His plans did not always work out. Now I really picture a wound or injury or circumstance that immobilized either physically or mentally. Or he felt stuck in a career or defeated somehere. The chief aspect is that somehow his career failed or immobilized him. I also like Celtic Noodle get Mark Twain, or a soldier like Grant, Lee or Sherman.

Family- 3Wands He always made plans to succeed. Approached life with forethought . Was not impulsive. Concern for the welfare of his family or perhaps descended from businessmen.

Oh blackairplane - I had him in mind while I was shuffling my victorian romantic but my spread seemed to indicate that he was good looking and I really don't know if it is just the deck that sparked me to think of him..... I mean the VR looks like his type of art.....or at least the era. So I could be seeing him with VR eyes. Then with your draw I really felt it was him.....but we'll see ;)

Not Toulouse Loutreq, but Franiee, you had some damned good hits first time around - thought you were gonna get it then.

And so have the rest of you, in one way or another. Sorry, I've been asleep.

Didn't have a happy marriage, or a happy life, though it was, in many ways, an important life.

He was indeed a bon vivant, sharp wit, generous, a gracious host - and suffered from bouts of melancholia. I don't think he ever fully understood the nastiness the world directed at him, nor did he deserve it.

Looks - Queen of Wands
Dark, striking, statuesque somehow, stary eyes , fashionable, good looking, medium build

Personality - Temperance
Good natured, gentle unhurried person with pleasant disposition, inventive, creative, patient

Career - 5 of Pentacles
Oh dear! Making something good from little resources? Something dark or depressing in his career whether its content of a book or any work of art or simply he had to work extra hard for success - going into exile perhaps?

Personal - 10 of Pentacles
Well to do background and traditional home life, perhaps well known family

Could it be Charles Dickens? Karl Marx? Can't wait for the reveal

Pocket RWS

Looks: 8 of Pentacles
Meticulous dresser, maybe even a dandy. Well-groomed. Good looking, but not in an in-you-face way. Elegant, refined.

Personality: 3 of Wands
Progressive thinker, lots of innovative ideas. Experimental and unafraid to have his opinion heard. A mover and a shaker, ready to take charge of any situation. Maybe a bit too intense at times. Witty.

Career: 5 of Swords
A writer? Not too sure here. Whatever it was, it involved more than the average share of criticism. Had to prove himself in his field, and it may not have been pretty. Involved in some sort of scandal?

Personal: The Tower
Make that really progressive thinker. Maybe too progressive for a stable home life. His preferences and/or views may have been too unusual for his time. Personal life public somehow?

Okay, this to me says Oscar Wilde, though I have no idea.

Edited to add, just about everyone had writer or artist as a profession. All readings seem to reinforce each other. Curious.

Gavriela

You're welcome. I was amazed at the amount of stuff everybody got.

Yup, wonderful host, not a happy marriage but he wrote fairy tales for the kids, too, if you didn't know. Plus the plays (playwright), and his essays still leave me reeling, especially the ones about social progress.

Scandal, gaol, bankruptcy, exile in Paris.

Definitely a spiffy dresser, very social, but bouts of depression and drinking.

Always generous - and he was literally horrified at the way people attacked him, couldn't understand the public hatred. Not just cos of the affair with Bosie, but because of a lot of his work.

And IIRC, he knew Mark Twain - who someone mentioned as a possible. As well as lots of French artists.

You guys are terrific!
