View Full Version : The Celtic Oracle (Matthews)
I did a search on this and couldn't find anything.
Does anyone have this? I just got this in the mail yesterday and I love it!
The artwork reminds me very much of the Greenwood Tarot and I'm glad I had the opportunity to get this oracle.
I'm still looking at the cards and skimming through the book, but I just adore it and hope to get to read with it soon.
If you have this oracle, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on it.

The text is the same as the Celtic Shaman's Pack, but the art for its cards is by Chesca Potter (of Greenwood Tarot fame).

Here's a thread on that set. http://tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=81026&highlight=celtic+oracle+matthews
(I got my copy from Summerdream, btw!)
I also like these very much although I don't exactly know how to use them as an oracle. At least I haven't yet! But I am enjoying learning the Celtic shaman mythos.
One small caveat that bugs me. I can't remember which card, but the text is obviously describing (though not using the word!) a weaving shuttle, but the card--in both sets!--shows a spindle! Mr. Matthews needs to brush up on his fiber arts tools and terminology!!
Anyone out there using Celtic Oracle or Celtic Shaman's Pack as an oracle?

Yes this is the deck that you linked to. I'm glad to see that the artwork is by Chesca Potter as it reminded me of The Greenwood. I'm looking forward to getting to know it better. (I got my copy from Summerdreams too! :D)
I am going to read the book and then go from there, apparently there are some nice spreads in the back of the book, so I'm looking forward to getting acquainted with these cards. I need to make a bag for them so I can carry it around. I'll have to check out the thread in the link. I agree, a spindle is a spindle! :D
Thanks for sharing!
Anyone else has this oracle? I would love to hear more.
I have the Chesca Potter deck as well, bought it as a 'Greenwood substitute when I thought I'd never get hold of one. It's a beautiful deck, one I look at rather than use as an oracle though.

Is the Celtic Oracle also drawn by Chesca Potter ?
I have the Celtic Shaman's Pack so I don't think I will need the Celtic Oracle as well.
I really like the deck but I would not know how to use it for a reading, the system behind it is quite complicated.
But it is really a nice deck to just feel the vibes :) I think I could use it for drawing a card a day as well to meditate upon.
I discovered The Celtic Oracle I have is the newer one with the new artwork (but still reminiscent of The Greenwood which is why I'm happy with it.) but now that I've seen The Celtic Shamen, I see the difference. Chesca Potter's work is gorgeous and speaks to me. No wonder I love the Greenwood so much.
The ones that I've found online that include her artwork is going for around $84 and up. Still too much for me for a deck, but I'm quite content with my Celtic Oracle.

Thanks for clearing that up :) It does look nice and it is very reasonably priced !
I think John Matthews still sells a few copies of the Celtic Shaman's Pack on his own website:
http://www.hallowquest.org.uk/ordermainframe.htm
With exchange rates and shipping, it will still not be cheap for people in US but at least he is not trying to make a fortune out of it :)

Thanks for the link, but still a bit high for me at this point. All's well. I'm content though! :)

I have both of these, the Celtic Shaman's Pack is the older one with the art by Chesca Potter, of Greenwood fame. The re-issue is called the Celtic Oracle with art by a variety of artists, none of them being Cesca Potter. The book is pretty much word-for-word the same in both, but the Oracle is the more lavishly laid out and produced book, lots of color pictures, etc. The cards in the Oracle are somewhat larger than in the Shaman's Pack, as is the book. The Oracle book has a blue color scheme on the cover, with a painting of a circle of standing stones, and the shamans Pack has an all over red design with a stylized bird (eagle/) on the cover. I mention this because I think the boxes follow the book cover designs.
I hope this helps, since the reissue in a different name without the artist' names on the box can be misleading.:)

Wow. I had no idea that the original Celtic Shaman's pack was going for so much! I got mine from an Amazon reseller late last year - I know I didn't pay more than $20.

Well, I know why, it's because I like them. Once I like a band, they break up. Once I get into a new RPG, it falls apart and now because I like The Greenwood and The original Celtic Shaman's pack, it is either OOP or extremely expensive. The story of my life...a day late or a dollar short! :D
Luckily, the Celtic Shaman's pack is more affordable at $84 versus the $400 that the Greenwood is going for on some places. I keep hoping when I go to flea markets and used bookstores....I keep hoping that "one of these days".
*sighs* Yep...it's because I like it...LOL....
