A while ago there was a group started here, but is fizzled out :(
I would like to start that group up again. Anyone interested? Next week I'm going to start it up.
Mystique: Is it too late? I just stumbled in here :D I do not know if I could do the study justice, but I am interested!
too late?
it's never too late :-)
post away, maybe this will drag diana in here to see if she can get over her not liking the deck.

MystiqueMoonlight,
Thanks for starting up this group! I recently acquired the Thoth deck (the non-green version). I've been reading the posts w/much interest... Unfortunatly, I don't know much about Kaballah, Theosophy, Knights Templar etc but have studied mythology and am heading up the Astrology study group... so I'm finding the pips *very* interesting!! So I hope my knowledge will be helpful :)
Also, I know when I first saw Thoth, I thought it was too intense. I think it gave me the impression of taking itself too seriously. But looking through the deck now, I can't conceive of it being any 'scarier' than Rider Waite...

I've had the Thoth deck for years, and it's my favorite. I seem to find this deck easiest to do readings with. Count me in if you will, despite having it for years I haven't done a lot of Tarot in the last several years so I'm getting rusty.

I have been wondering about getting a Thoth deck to compare to RWS. Could you start your study group with a quick description of the different sorts of Thoth decks? I believe there are green non-green and two different sorts of extra cards.
Which decks are better/more interesting/difficult? And how do I tell them apart when ordering over the net?
Thank you

There are no differences as far as the illustrations are concerned. The greenish one, which is the large deck, just has an over all greenish tint to the cards which renders a kind of muted hew to the illustrations. Most ppl don't like this deck because of the green tinge.
My Thoth Deck is the regular sized one published by US Games and printed in Belgium without the green tinge. The ISBN for it is 0-88079-308-2.
The decks published by AG Muller are also printed very well and do not have that green tinge. The pocket size is very handy and the ISBN for it is 3-905219-06-9. I have a brand new pocket size Thoth Deck for trade if you are interested.

Hi all,
Mind if I join in?
I just received the (green) Thoth as a present.
Can't wait to start working with it (although I would have preferred a non-green version - LOL).
*Mareike*
Thank you for clearing that up It was a bit confusticating nd the green deck always sounded a bit sickly to me.
>I have a brand new pocket size Thoth Deck for trade if you are >interested.
I'm afraid I have nothing to trade it for but thank you for the offer.

Hi folks!
I just got the Thoth for my birthday, from three wonderful tarot-holic friends (Kaz, Tarotlady and Maan! :)) and actually got the Book of Thoth earlier, cuz I wanted an other reference book for my Cosmic Tribe deck. The only problem is, I don't understand much of what our dear mr Crowley writes. It's probably a linguistic clash + the fact I'm miserably ill-educated in astrology, kabbalah and numerology, and hence his references all pass by me...
SO - now I found this study group, and am thrilled at the prospect of learning from and with people speaking plain English...! ;)
Look forward to catching up!
Jenny :)

Jenny you will find the Thoth will lead you to many paths. Take them one at a time and your experience will be new and exciting.
A note to everyone else:-
I must apologise for my absence, but we have had a very difficult April with personal loss and so forth which has distracted me from the study group. For that I apologise. I will begin reposting tomorrow.

Hi all. I got a thoth a couple of weeks ago, and for the first time in years, I'm actually using tarot cards again on a regular basis.
I've always worked with waite-style decks, and never really connected with the thoth because it was so different, and I was afraid the words on the minors would limit interpretation too much. When I got a copy it was mainly as an addition to my collection.
I was surprised to find how much they spoke to me the first time I looked through them. I had never had a close look at the images, although I did know them, having read all the tarot books I could get hold off easily. I love this deck. It is so different from the decks I used in the past its forced me out of my preconceived system of meanings, and made me look at the system anew. I've found so much more, expecially in the court cards.
I tried at first to 'translate' them: knight is king, prince is page, or is prince knight? There is no easy way to relate them to the other court, and to me, that was an eye-opener. I can now see the court cards, really *see* them before my mind opens its little drawer of interpretations. It's not possible to compare them to the cards of any other deck, and that's made me look at them in a new and much more intuitive way.
I've grown especially fond of the princess of swords, her delicate wings, her battle against the smoke, the knife held in reverse grip... it all seems to mean so much. She turned up in both the readings I did yesterday, and so far, she's my favourite. :)
OK, I'm gonna stop writing now. I could go on and on but perhaps that's not very useful. Nice to see you all, I'll certainly be checking back.

Greetings Willie,
Welcome to our study group. A word of warning though. This is an interactive group where everyone puts their two cents worth in. No information is spoon fed to anyone :)
All thoughts, ideas, interpretations etc are welcomed and appreciated..

I'd be happy too. So how do we set about it?
Since I'm starting a thorough study in Crowley, together with Edison, next week, I would like to join in as well. We're going to study the Book of Toth, with every week xxx pages.
I will at least keep it posted here (I will start it's own topic by then) and I hope for feedback / new revelations / insights from you, too. Would be VERY nice to be able to reflect te discussions, forthcoming out of study-evenings, with you all.

This looks like a great project to me. I only use the Thoth now. Shall we start discussing the cards one at a time, beginning with the Fool, or are we going to dart about as the fancy takes us?
Hi F.,
To be honoust; we will start, off-line, with the book of Toth itself. If you've got it, that would be great. The book starts with 'The theory of the Tarot' (1st chapter). This contains 46 pages and we will start with them.
Online, I would like to open a thread, discussing these discussion-evenings. And indeed, we are planning to do a card a night (for now every tuesday), so I will be able to post our things on wednesday.
Once again; this is the way we planned it, here at home.
Anybody who thinks this is usefull, may join in. I am willing to lead this kind of thread. If it is too slow, or some have another idea, don't let me stop you; these discussion-evenings will happen anyhow and I will try to keep you all posted (since Aeclectic is the place to post these kind of things..)

ohh when are you going to do the reading and posting of the pages. i would love to get in on that and maybe for the thoth-o-holics we could also do a card a day? or does that contradict eachother?
May I offer my humble presence, I will be following also
Thank you Diwha
I'd like to join in too, when I can. I've got one suit to go before I finish the minors, but I haven't started the majors yet (I always do them last for some reason).

I also will be reading with interest and joining in the posts when I can on the Thoth. I have only recently got this deck and am keen to get to know it better but I am still waiting for my books on order and committed to other studies at the moment as well.
But apart from all that I will be following as well and look forward to learning more about this amazing tarot deck! :D

Wauw! Looks great!
Next wednesday I will do my read-out of the first chapter of Crowley's Toth. And OFF COURSE! Join in, do your card-a-day, whatever! The more information, the better!
We, here at home, will be doing a card, maybe 2, a week.
My girlfriend (Lune) will join in online, so there might be feedback, while I'm busy studing or otherwise.. :-)

for the card-a-day study how do we go about starting this?
Gardener
23-04-2004, 15:09
If I might suggest -
Would you all like to go through the cards in order, but starting with the minors? I am thinking that PHi's thread about going through the book will move at its own pace, especially because the book has a long introduction and a very long passage on the Fool, all of which might take a little time to assimilate.
So if we are going to talk about the cards (one per day?) in parallel to the book discussion, it might be less confusing to start with the other arcanum.
Would people like to follow the order in Crowley's book - he starts with the court cards then goes through the four aces, then the four twos, ending with the four tens. That would mean beginning with the Knight of Wands.
What do you all think? I am excited to see this discussion group forming around this fascinating deck.
Hi Gardener,
Recently I found out that the best place to start, are it's aces.
By the time we get there, you will be far ahead, which means we can use your information and we won't get in one another's way. (although a card-a-day against a card-a-week will lead to an advance for you, off course ;-))
Do I have to explain the start at ace for you, or is that a clear statement? (sorry; newbie here, so I'll have to get customed to the general level of this forum).

Hello All,
Since my last post I noticed that closaspexra has already posted a card for Ace of Wands so it seems we are already underway!
But does card-a-day seem like a pretty fast pace to anyone besides me? What about card-every-few-days, once the first card has received a few postings?
And hi, PHi,
I can read your statement "Start at aces" one of two ways. You could mean, start with the four aces (more likely grammatically) or you could mean, start with an ace and work though that suit in numerical order (more conventional approach). Either way, I am curious why you find Aces "best" for starting. Is it the logic of Ace often representing beginnings, or something more subtle?
As for figuring out the level of dialog in the forum, I might suggest that you read some of the posts in the History section and the Reading Exchange to see some of the livelier discussions, the complexity of information conveyed.
Good luck finding your niche!
Hi Gardener,
The logic behind the Aces is, that, if you start with the small Arcana, it would be wise to first analyse the aces. And of course, then start with the Ace of Wands, working your way through the Wands untill that's clear. Then, step over to the Cups. And so on.
Why? Because, indeed, they are the Beginning. Always start with the base...
Or, start with the Archetypes (Major Arcana) and work afterwards your way up to them, by the same method of starting with the Aces..

Hi Morandia - Welcome
Just join in and post your thoughts on the cards.
We have off with the majors a little while ago and members are just posting when they can or when they are studying a particular card.
Here are the threads for the Majors we have been studying so far:
The Fool: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25875
The Magus: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26244
The Priestess: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26626
The Empress: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27013
Hope this helps and look forward to you joining in with us as it is always great to get another perspective or insight! :)
I think there are also some threads on the minors which I will try and locate as well.

Here is a link also to the new Thoth Study Group - Table of Contents (http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27324) which may help us all to keep track of where we are up to. isthmus nekoi has also now kindly made this a sticky at the top of the Thoth Forum for easy reference.
Reading back through this threads posts I noticed that a few people were keen to start at the Aces as well as the Majors. To kick this off I will post a thread on the Ace of Wands for those who want to join in on the Minors as well as the Majors.
Cheers
