I was reminiscing with my family over the holidays, and it came up that my first grade teacher was not pleased to find that I could read before I started school. (Go figure . . .) (I couldn’t really help it--my brother is a year older than I and was having trouble in school, so my mom basically taught him to read at home, and, of course, I was right there soaking up “story time” as hard as I could!)
I mentioned that my greatest recollection of all this was that I was completely DISGUSTED that that we had to start off reading PICTURES! That’s not REALLY reading, you know. So I would just wander off during class to find a REAL book to read somewhere in the classroom (endearing me to the teacher, I’m sure!).
So on the way home from my mom’s house, my husband makes the point that now my favorite thing to do in the whole world is to READ PICTURES!!!
Then I remembered that in junior high we had to do these programmed reading drills with of color-coded cards. (I remember the highest level color was purple . . . ) I was also highly offended by this activity, partially because we weren’t reading from a real book--these were just blurbs on CARDS!!!
Ah, how things change . . .
Of course, now that I’ve found out I can (buy and) read lots of books ABOUT pictures on cards, I feel much better!!!
I’ve been chuckling about this so I thought I’d share. I hope you have a giggle on me!
