View Full Version : ADEPT LEVEL STEP TEN; 21 Ways To Read A Tarot Card

"Meanings" is the theme for this step. Mary Greer notes that meanings of tarot cards once consisted of "keywords". Then religious themes, myths and folk meanings became attached, incorporated or partially embedded. All in all, the commentary preceding 10:2 provides quite a bit of information on the evolution of meanings.

Several categories of meanings-systems are also detailed over several pages. Step 10:2 is a "studying" step first, and then a "doing" step. Note the instructions immediately following the "Activity 10:2" heading. If this is a lot of work, consider breaking this step into segments.

Step 10:3 gives us two cards to work with and asks us to apply four levels of meaning to each of these cards. You might also want to use your chosen card for this step in addition to the two cards given.

As usual, Mary surprises us with something unexpected, a means of amplifying body awareness as a means of increasing our access to the subconscious.

Finally, step 10:4 is one of those steps that stretch our minds and which will need to be done over a period of time -- perhaps we can catch up with this before the end of this series.

WE ARE APPROACHING THE HALF WAY STEP TO THE END OF OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THIS BOOK AND WITH OUR COMMUNITY ACTION.

This thought occurred to me last night. I realized that I had been delaying posting this step -- I hate to think of this experience ending in another few months. But, that is still a ways off. Until then, lets continue the excitement of learning through doing, doing with new thoughts and skills. Dave

I guess you'll have to come up with another "most scathingly brillant" new idea/project after 21 is done Dave:laugh:

Using the Victorian Romantic 4 of Wands, 5 of Wands, and Emperor…

10:2
Using book interps … turn each into a question and then answer them.

From The Illustrated Book of Tarot by Jane Lyle:

in the 4 of wands the stability of the four expresses itself in a fiery way. Since fire is an expansive element, this card represents a successful, and abundant harvest, and also signifies a well-earned rest.
Q: What gets you fired up?
A: Usually an AH-HA! moment will do it for me.
Q: Where in this card (VR 4 of Wands) do you see this “ah-ha” moment?
A: I feel it is on the smiling face of that lady in the crowd. The look on her face makes me think she has found something familiar on that stage. Something sought after for a while.
Q: If you could sum up what that lady is feeling in one word, what word would it be?
A: It would be connection.
Q: Where in your life are you experiencing a “connection”?
A: Mostly in an understanding of my world and myself and the meaning I get from it.

From Gerd Ziegler’s Mirror of the Soul:

The circle is full. All contradictions and opposites come together and connect at the center. The harmony between male and female, active and passive has returned. The fire of creativity is kindled by this occurrence.
Q: How do you feel you have come full circle?
A: When experiencing loss (as an example), and having questions in regards to that loss. In seeking answers I’d hear/read others experiences in regards to loss, and realize I’m not the only one. Then finding that I’m not truly defined by such a loss and gaining some peace from that realization. That peace, in turn, provides an answer, an answer that satisfies. Thereby completing a small circle of thought.
Q: Has it always been that quick?
A: Not always, sometimes it takes me months, years, to realize an answer to a problem, and then to “test” it out, more time…it really is a process.
Q: How do you define creativity?
A: There was a time when I would imagine a true creative was one who could work well with their hands. Create wonderful works of art…and I still do, of course. But, now, I’m expanding on the word in regards to creative living and the true art of that. Still learning.
Q: Where do you find “harmony” in opposites?
A: Gerd Ziegler stated “male and female…active/passive” I guess you can also include “me and them” in that my harmony has come (at times) in recognizing the similarities within myself and others. We, as people, really are not as different or separate from each other as we may believe.

The following quote is in reference to the number 4…
From It’s All In Your Numbers by Kathleen Roquemore:

Self-discipline-one of the means of learning self-discipline is through work, and your path is largely that of work and service. It is time when you must learn to make yourself do what needs to be done, to be efficient and organized, to produce through service and self-control.
Q: In what manner do you “self-discipline”?
A: It could be as simple as replacing one bad habit with one good habit…like instead of leaving a dirty dish in the sink (oh, I’ll do it later), I will wash it up immediately until I no longer have to think of doing it. Another thing I notice about myself is how my mind just wanders off, I’m starting to catch myself in those moment and focus. Small baby steps, I know, but I have to start somewhere.
Q: How do you serve your community?
A: I suppose the most obvious manner is through work. Besides offering hair services, I do notice when people wish to talk, and then I listen. Share a story and maybe a laugh or two. Just very basic, simple stuff, and I notice people do appreciate.

You know after doing this step again, I feel like I’m really understanding what that VR 4 of Wands wants to express to me right now. I so enjoyed revisiting this sub-step.

10:3
Give an example of the 4 levels of meaning-physical, allegorical, moral, spiritual-for the following 2 cards. Feel free to use the meanings given in books.

1)
VR 5 of Wands
My interp:A fight is about to ensue (literal). The fact that all men present are wearing the same types of shoes signifies they are all from the same class of people (allegorical). So who is better suited to this conflict?
The intent of the man bearing his chest seems to want to intimidate, have the last word, but the older man holding the stick threatens bodily harm. Since the man with the open shirt has no defenses, it maybe better for him to avoid the confrontation all together (moral). Your powers of discernment are being tested, how far will you go, and can you think clearly enough (spiritual)?

Book Meanings:
From The Illustrated Book of Tarot by Jane Lyle:
(literal)Views differ, arguments arise, and sparks fly.
(moral)There is plenty of adrenalin around, and likely to be plenty of rows as well. However, none of this should be seen as damaging in retrospect; a finer product or set of ideas is being forged.
From Gerd Ziegler’s Mirror of the Soul:
(allegorical)Because the free flow of energy is greatly restricted, it has begun to stagnate. (moral)This concentrated charge of energy strives vainly to find a possibility for expression.

VR Emperor
My interp:Sitting in a position of power (literal). This man’s stillness can denote a confidence and ability to plan the next move (allegorical). His Emperor’s leadership style seems well-suited to the task at hand, and regardless of outcome, he will do what is right (moral). Sustaining his power will depend on how well he is connected to his people (spiritual), and their needs.

Book Meanings:
From Gerd Ziegler’s Mirror of the Soul:
(moral)The qualities of true leadership include humility and submission to the cosmic law, as well as dynamism and power.
(spiritual)A deep understanding and a constant consideration of the will of the Whole are also necessary.
From The Illustrated Book of Tarot by Jane Lyle:
(allegorical)When you draw the Emperor you may be on the verge of a promotion, or be in a position where others look to you for direction. In terms of career, The Emperor signifies that you prefer to be boss and are not a natural employee.

2)
VR 4 of Wands
My interp...People gathering to see a band play (literal). The good cheer on everyone’s faces indicates that all is right in the world for this one moment (allegorical). It is good to be open to these small moments of happiness, regardless of how long or little they last (moral). Being grateful for these little shows makes it easier to recognize these everyday miracles when they do happen (spiritual).

Book Meanings:
From The Illustrated Book of Tarot by Jane Lyle:
(allegorical)The four of wands suggests moving into a new home, or even acquiring second home. A powerful sense of security is signified by this card
From Gerd Ziegler’s Mirror of the Soul:
(moral/spiritual)Something beautiful is making its way into your relationships. You may notice it first as established conditions are called into question and discussed openly. Clarifying the old is a prerequisite for a new oneness, a new beginning.

I must admit that in choosing these book passages, I did note a sort of excitement and recognition which prompted me to pick them. When I started this exercise, I was somewhat sleepy, but by the end of 10:3, I was fully awake and now wired, lol! So all and all, enjoyed this step(10)very much.

10:4

In keeping my tarot journal which includes daily draws, I have seldom referred to tarot books, especially the last journal I kept. Reason is not so much arrogance as just “knowing” how the cards are speaking to me in reference to my day. It’s usually an “oh, yeah” sort of feel to them.
In any case, it will be refreshing to pull the card(s) at the end of my day and relate to book meanings. Lately I haven’t done all that many daily pulls, so this will be a great time to get back into it!
Will see what happens and report back at end of 21 ways adept.
Lastly, the scans provided have more than one card on each, but just pick out the VR 4 &5 of Wands and Emperor-much thanks,
squeak

EDITED TO ADD:

Feb.12 2009
Tarot of the Spirit
I just completed my 31st daily throw and am very pleased with the results. I admit there were a couple of days when I was scratching my head wondering what the book interp was trying to tell me about my day. But the rest of the time, on this first month was/is a revelation. The funny thing is that on these throws, which I did at the end of my day, everyday, many times the card was telling me about one single aspect of my day, or a particular thought that struck me at a certain point, or even a daily throw that was about what I had seen on TV in the morning, and the thoughts coming from it. This month really opened my eyes, and I'm glad I tried again. I found it very rewarding:)

March 16 2009
Victorian Romantic
I finished and found that as I reached the end of the month with this deck...what the book interp was saying was not matching what actually happened during my day. Also, things that I thought rather significant were completely ignored, lol, oh well.
BUT- I really love this little companion book, because everything is so thoughtfully written and done. It is as beautiful as the deck. One part of me liked it when I had no clue what the cards were about, and when I read the cards...it was such a revelation. There were details in some cards I never saw before. The eagle at the feet of the Queen of Cups, how well-dressed the man is in the 10 of pents, the little child on the 5 of swords egging on the other child to fight with the 3rd...I thought they were all working in concert, and both Lovers cards--I didn't know it was suppose to be Baccus or the others, Beatrice and Dante. So I really did enjoy 'finding' out the intended meaning of these card. Thank you, Jewel, for telling me to purchase the book, because I didn't think I could until I found Baba's website. I'm glad I did!

Ohhhhhhh I know ... by the way I am actually cought up with the work, just need to find time to post it :D. You know .... we could always pick up Tarot For Yourself and do that workbook ... just a thought ... I have other decks I want to explore in the way I have explored the FM with this book, so starting another study group with another workbook would be really fun. Or we can do 21 Ways all over again with another deck *LOL*. The possibilities are endless!

As I re-read this chapter, I categorized my FEY Tarot as "Archetypal and/or psychological" since they somewhat fit with understanding ourselves and finding the path to individuation. If anything, the Fey's stress their uniqueness and ability to find individual approaches to life. As for their "levels" of meaning, I'm not sure that they don't work on several levels -- particularly "literal" and "spiritual" as they express themselves so directly and deeply for me.

Fey cards that seem to be best examples of the archetypal-psychological oriented type and the literal type are:

** My HERMIT card which I'm using now. This card shows a man with a very tall hat and a long coat carrying a lantern as he navigates twisting, turning stairways that can lead everywhere and which can be stepped onto to change direction or orientation. Being lost, or searching, presents us with may choices and a sense of bewilderment and chaos. The literal story is shown by the choices and the visual confusion.

** JUDGMENT shows the creator of the deck laying her head down on her desk, brush still in hand. Around her, finished and partially finished Fey cavort about the desk top. A literal portrait. Perhaps also allegorical in that what we create comes back to reflect (judge) upon us.

** TWO of CHALICES shows two physically different Fey sharing a moment together as well as a cup to drink. Threy sit upon rocks in the midst of water, fully alone with each other. We get the sense that they are not close as would lovers be, yet they are close in that they are themselves and are sharing what they have. Alegorical, literal, psychological?

** Another favorite is the Fey Ace of Pentacles. I have wood carved this figure and mounted it on my wooden book-box that hold my Fey deck. This Fey sits among some small animals and is painting a mandala upon his/her palm. Paint pots lie about, a candle lights the artistic effort. For me, literal. For readings, archetypal or allegorical.

I see so much in this deck, it seems different every time I pick it up. After two years I'm still in the "discovery" stage with it.

As for the Emperor and the Five of Wands --

FIVE of WANDS depicts five young Fey swinging from a tree on vines, having a great time. Some pull on the vine, others fly by the branches and use them to change direction. One watches. Play, struggle, competition, being together in a non-planned situation.
** Literal in that play, fun and effort are a natural consequence of a group.
** Allegorical in that one might need to "lighten up" or unwind.
** Moral in that a sense of equality goes a long way to self-discovery, growth.
** Spiritual in that out true nature is much like that of a child if we can only let it be so.

EMPEROR. This card shows a grizzled adult, not old, sitting on a rock throne which floats in the air. A rock floats in front of him to support his feet, another on his left hold his sword, while a rock to the right supports a small unicorn which he is watching out of the corners of his eyes. The weight of the world (the rocks) doesn't prevent him from floating freely or keeping his symbols of power near him. He is obviously capable of mastering both his situation and any condition presented to him. Competence beyond easy understanding is a phrase that comes to mind.
** Literal in that he magically controls his situation.
** Allegorical in that one needs to remain objective (free) from burdens as much as possible.
** Moral in that his power and presence takes him to un-reproachable levels where he is above pettiness.
** Spiritual in that he is clearly moving beyond the constraints that may see the physical world as placing upon them.

I believe that each of us has found a deck of inspiration for one's needs and views of life. There is such passion and depth in all that has been written that it is obvious that each is truly enjoying these exercises.

As for the "end of times" we can, and will, have other forums to pursue as a group, this group, and with all our friends as they continue to join us. Dave

Well I,ve started working on step 10. It has occured to me that if I do every step on every card I will have written a tarot book! So with all our experiance we can write the next book; Steps 22 to 43, "If the first was hard, just wait for this one!" by Study Group, editor Dadsnook2000. ;)

*ROFLMAO* do not even jest about that! I hope to post this step early next week ... then again, we all know about the best laid plans of mice and men (my moon as two mice in it *LOL*).

I must admit that I am saddened that I am probably going to have to start using a second notebook come Step 18 or so. I was so hoping all my work would fit into my one notebook. But I will not force it, I will work as if it has unlimited pages. I have become so attached to the thing after having it for almost a year, and so full of special stuff *LOL*.

We've had suggestions, public and private, for a continuation of our special work together. We'll see about the "next" in our tarot lives when we finish this work. Maybe we will write a book of sorts.

To some extent that was done down in the astrology forum with the "Planet Series" of threads. I haven't followed up the work that was accomplished and posted there because the number of advanced students and astrologers has moved on to more serious sites, and those that remain are more concerned with what, to me, are frivolous issues. So, I don't add much to the Planet Series threads now, although I will start a new phase in that forum late this summer.

There are some things I would like to explore next in Tarot that fits in with what has been brought up. Dave

21 steps adept level 10
DruidCraft

Here is the first one. I hope it alright to edit in the two next as I finish them.

Five of Wands
Literal: Five boys playing with sticks. Sticks clashing. Green grass, sandy place and blue skies. A hen pecking

Allegorical: Anyone’s game, It’s only a game. Fun and games. Play it for laughs. Face the competition, Pick up the gauntlet. Stiff competition. Bring it on. Pecking order. Playing with fire. Meet your match. Power struggle. Battle of wits.

Moral: Be a good sport. Fair play. Meet the challenge. Pickers cannot be choosers. The best man wins. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Play by the Rules.

Spiritual: Love/forgive your enemy. Meet your own challenges of life. Embrace your fears. Transformation through struggle.

The Lord (Emperor)
Literal: A man seated on a stone throne holding a long staff. A crown of antlers. An eagle flying.
Allegorical: Fearless leader. King of Kings. Figurehead. The master of my fate. King of the castle. Uneasy lays the head that wears the crown. Founding father
Moral: You cannot fight City Hall. Honor thy father.
Spiritual: Divine right of Kings.

For the Emperor i would like to quote Jung and Tarot by Sallie Nichols:
"The Emporor brings permanence, stability and perspective. He stands as the figurehead for the state. He represents the principle upon which the fertility and the welfare of the kingdom depends"

I think this summerizes the literal, moral and spiritual side of the Emperor.

The Lady (Empress)
Literal: A pregnant lady sits on her wooden throne. She sits with her arms holding the harvests abundance. The country side is picturesque with a stream flowing beside her, which she dips her toe into
Allegorical: Mother love. Land flowing with milk and honey. Fruits of the loins. Fruits of your labour .Open to love. A pregnant harvest. The fruits of the womb
Dipping your toe in the water. Bumper crop.
Moral: It isn’t nice to fool Mother Nature. The rule of love.
Spiritual: Mother Nature.

To quote again from Sallie Nichols:
“It is she who carries the seed from which ultimately will spring a new transcendental awareness in which mysticism and science , spirit and flesh, inner and outer , can be experienced as one world”

I’m reading my “Jung, A very Short introduction” by Anthony Stevens to understand a bit more about the Archetypal/Psychological meanings. Very good intro into Jung.

ADEPT LEVEL STEP 10: Meanings
DECK: Fantastic Menagerie
CARD: The Moon

ACTIVITY 10:3

(1) Levels of meaning

5 OF WANDS (FM Deck)
LITERAL: you will challenge someone or someone will challenge you.
ALLEGORICAL: (loss, conflict, pg. 158) This card represents a conflict to prove superiority through the use of bravado.
MORAL: This cards says that right and wrong can be proved through winning a contest, irrelevant of the actual point. That one can bully others t win the right to be right.
SPIRITUAL: Winning and being right at al costs, assuaging the ego, overrules our sense of decency. Winning is everything regardless of how it will affect others even if we are wrong.

THE EMPEROR:
LITERAL: A person in authority or whom you admire cares for you as a father and provides you with guidance, which you might not want to hear.
ALLEGORICAL: This card denotes a figure of authority or a leader, who cares deeply for his subjects/subordinates/followers.
MORAL: The Emperor represents a just leader who looks out for the best interest of subordinates/subjects/followers/children, etc.
SPIRITUAL: The Emperor rules like a father. He is stern but nurturing, trying to help us achieve our highest potential and gives us structure. He rules with benevolence and compassion.

(2) Examples of the 4 levels of my chose card, THE MOON:

LITERAL: Stepping out into the moonlight to get lost in one’s fantasies. Secret rondez-vous.
ALLEGORY: The moon is known for its influence and pull on the earth and on our minds. The term lunacy is based on this, about loosing our minds. It is also associated with the feminine (Lady Owl), delusions/illusions (mouse shadow in the moon), addictions (mouse bracelet), and hidden mysteries (clothes).
MORAL: Reality vs. fantasy. Our society encourages us to live in the real rational world. The Moon card on the other hand, looks at the forbidden and our fantasies. Subconsciously we are aware of the thoughts of escape and indulgence, and sometimes long for these. Some people give in and get lost in them (i.e.: addicts and people who live in their own fantasy world).
SPIRITAL: This card speaks of the intuition and dreams that we harbor. The inner voice that speaks to us and guides our actions for good or ill. The part of us that longs for something more that we have and/or are.

ACTIVITY 10.4 – Book of the month approach:

Though I am currently lagging (very far) behind, I have been participating in the “78 Weeks” Study Group where I am using the Celtic Dragon tarot (main reason I am lagging behind ) As part of this work I have certain steps from “21 Ways” that I use with each card (literal description, emotional description, number, mode/suit/element, book meanings (78 Degrees of Wisdom & Celtic Dragon Companion Book being used), and the summary of what I have learned.

As I am using 78 DW as one of my book meaning sources, I do a comparison of the Celtic Dragon deck with the RWS. This work has really given me clarity of what the cards mean to me, as well as what makes a deck a good or bad reading deck where I am concerned. In seeing some meanings in the CD companion book I can feel myself flinch and know my facial expressions and physical body strongly react to my disagreement in meanings for some cards.

When I can muster the courage to continue working with the Celtic Dragon, and get back on board with my “78 Weeks” work I will complete what this step and meet its requirements, as my reactions thus far have been such that I am learning to truly see what the cards mean to me.

OK will this is not going to happen. I posted about this last week, so I will re-iterate it here with what I have decided to do in lieu of what I originally thought I would do.

I have a lot of tarot decks that have companion books that have been neglected. I am always complaining that I do not have time to get to them. I have decided to quit making excuses and to read a companion book a month and go through each deck. On a monthly basis I will make a new post to this thread with an update of the companion book I read and the cards I went through while reading. I will also compare and contrast The Moon cards from each of these decks and disucss their book meanings.

JANUARY 2009 - The Mystic Dreamer, companion book The Dreamer's Journal by Barbara Moore.

I enjoyed the book and got some new insights into several of the minor arcana. I know the 3 of swords was one of the ones that was quite useful, and I believe the 2 of swords was another. They were by no means the only two cards, but Ms. Moore's meanings were very simple and I felt some little "AHA!" moments with the way she described their meanings.

Though the deck is very beautiful I did not really feel a connection with it. Like many have posted in threads about this deck I think I would benefit from larger images on the cards. There are many details on the cards that I would have missed had I not been reading the book as I could not see them.

I will edit this post later with a comparison between its moon card and my moon card to finish up this post later this week.

EDITED 02/27/09 TO INCLUDE MOON CARD COMPARISON:
The Mystic Dreamer (MD) Moon is a lot more emotional than the FM Moon Card. From the whistful and possibly sad facial expression on the MD full moon to the turbulent waters.

The MD includes some traditional RWS imagery such as the two towers, wolf and lobster, but again the turbulent waters and the moon itself add much depth and emotion to the card. The FM gives a picture of someone under the Moon's influence looks and feels like independent of whom it is affecting.

In the FM companion, a very good explanation of what this card represents in a reading (both positive and negative aspects) as well as a warning. The MD companion emphasises the mystery and fear strongly, and to view the card primarily as a warning. Personally I prefer the more objective position on the card that the FM takes over the MD. I did not really gain any new insights on this card from comparing it to the MD Moon.

Squeak, have you been doing this? if yes, how has it been working for you? if no, are you going to start doing this or possibly revise your plan for this step as I had to do? I'm just being nosey and trying to get some dialog going on in the study group :D

I tried this past summer but lost steam after a couple of throws. Since my VR didn't come with a companion book,
I used a random tarot book. Your input regarding the use of a companion book&deck makes much more sense. Never thought of doing it that way.
I think I will try again to finish this step, but not with the VR.

I am really enjoying going through a companion book and deck. I am doing the Alchemical Renewed, with the book from the Alchemical Tarot for February. I started the book last night as I was finished with the Dreamer's jorunal, and it is really interesting. It will be a great way to make me pull decks off my shelf that have been collecting dust! *LOL*. I might try doing the Tarot of Prague for March, though I am also interested in doing the Sacred Circle, Bohemian Gothic, and Sacred Rose as well.

Too bad you don't have the companion to the VR it is very good (as are all MRP companion books I have read). Perhaps I will re-read this one at some point for this exercise. If I recall I did not finish it because I just got so comfortable reading with the deck. The Golden VR is probably my favorite reading deck. If you ever need anything specific out of the book, PM me and I will be happy to share it with you :D

But I better stay focused on February *LOL*. I lucked into finsihing my January deck/book early only because of the Christmas holidays. Life is back in full swing now, and I want to keep up this time :D

For the adept 10 steps we are doing step 10:3 for 2 cards plus our own. But how do we do the 10:4 in written form? are we just to keep that in back of our minds as we progress through the rest of the book?

I just started doing a daily pull and plan to do so for the next month or two with one deck and companion book in particular. I'm currently jotting down my daily experiences in my journal, and intend to report back as to how it all felt and how accurate the book interps were. That's my plan so far CB for this sub-step.

I typically switch and use the Fey Tarot, Waite-Smith Tarot, and to a lesser extent the Tarot of Prague and Robin Wood Tarot. So, I'm comfortable with multiple decks and often select one appropriate to the person I'm reading for. When I use the Witche's Tarot, I even switch Swords/Wands and Fire/Air applications to fit with each deck-creator's design of the cards. The only deck where I don't do this is with the Robin Wood where the companion book says that this switch is part of the deck's ideal application but the card illustrations don't reflect the change ---- they closely mirror the Waite-Smith cards.

I say that you should do this when you wish, now, later, much later. It's a good exercise to develop flexibility as well as card insights. Dave

Adept 10:3
Tarot of Dreams

5 of Wands

Literal: Going somewhere hot, Beware of men with sticks, competition, going to a show with half naked men

Allegorical: fives are challenges and wands are fire-will power, passion, and spiritual force Learn to be more direct with your energy, focus, fighting your self

Moral: violence is not always the answer so choose your fights wisely

Spiritual: you feel spirituality challenged, a spiritual disconnect, learn to meditate

The Emperor

Literal: Stand for what you believe in, this s a time to be serious. if you do not stand for something you will fall for anything.

Allegorical: the archetype of emperor is the farther of rules , order, boundaries

Moral: it is important to understand the spirit of rules; not a stickler on the word of law, laws with out moral values is not honorable at all

Spiritual: our moral code can come from our spiritual background. The law of higher power is the supreme law, also might refer to karma..

The Moon

Literal: Bats are in this card so bats in the belfry can work. A dog and wolf are in the for ground so possible pets going crazy or pet crazy

Allegorical: from the moon we get Luna and lunacy, moon has related to emotions and water in many cultures. Also dreams and subconscious

Moral illusion verse reality there are 3 sides to a story his her and what really happened.

Spiritual: from my spiritual tradition, we can all relate to our higher power in dreams abd subconscious, the other side as Michael Harner used to say is real.

Its been awhile for me since doing this step. Reading Coyoteblacks posting, I had some different thoughts about the Moon in particular, and about all of the cards in terms of how the Fey Tarot portrays the cards.

The Fey 5/WANDS shows five playful Fey swinging on a rope slung over the branch of a tree, two on each end of the rope, one sitting on the branch. Each rope-end has two Fey, one warm-flame colored, one blue-cool colored, with the final fey on the branch being warm-flame colored.

** In a literal or physical sense, they are having fun doing the same thing, yet each is doing their activity alone. The rope links them all, yet their actions are mostly their independent.
** In an allegorical sense, accomplishment depends upon each doing their part.
** In a moral/ethical sense they are all willing to share or await their turn, recognizing that each has an opportunity, each has to wait for the moment to favor them.
** In a spiritual sense, each accepts that play and diversion is good for the body while the mind opens to accepting spontaneous awarenesses and makes associations that affect both play and living life.

The Fey EMPEROR sits upright on a stone throne which floats in the air, his feet resting on another floating stone, his sword nearby --- impaled on another floating stone, a pet unicorn with wings sits on another floating stone. He is dressed in decorative armour, has close-cropped blond hair and his eyes are looking to the side at the unicorn.

** In a literal/physical sense, he and the heavy stones are defying gravity.
** In an allegorical sense the weight of the world is all quite manageable for him, he has no need to directly control the things that are his. They are his for the taking if they are needed.
** A moral/ethical view is that ownership is merely a convenience, that we only own ourselves, our actions, our values, our decisions, our satisfaction.
** A spiritual view might be that what ever is around us is both there for a shared purpose and an existing independent purpose. Multiple levels of being and purpose and development are all co-mingled.

The Fey MOON shows a Fey-Hunter kneeling in the moon-lit night, looking at the full Moon, holding a staff with a large waxing (from the side we see in the card) sickle-Moon at the staff-tip. On the ground before him we see stick- drawn lines, including a crescent Moon within a Sun-like circle. While his clothes are hunter-like, they also are a bit overly colorful, a red hat with feathers, a red sash richly decorated, large silver discs hanging from his belt. As one looks at the card more closely, the Fey seems to take on a role of a woodland priest of some sort.

** The physical impact of the card suggests one who is at home in the wild and has a deep respect for nature, yet is not afraid of the night and its fears. He is there to meditate or worship. His staff suggests that others follow him.
** The allegorical sense of this Moon card is that we are at our best when we are part of nature and the world we inhabit.
** The moral/ethical view of this card relates to doing what is needed to honor all that supports us in our life's quest.
** The spiritual story is we are a part of the world so that we can experience what the world has to teach us.

Again, I am amazed at how different and how similar our various decks and cards are in their messages. In her book, Tarot Wisdom, Rachel Pollack notes that in many cards the "Four" of the Emperor is put forth by having him sit on a cube. Here he sits and is accompanied by four rocks or groupings of rocks. Her books shows several examples of the Moon card, almost all of which have the dog and wolf prowling around --- as in Coyoteblack's card. With the bats flying overhead, I would see that card as indicating that each of us hunts and sustains ourselves in our own environment, and within that environment there is nothing to fear. Most Five of Wands cards/decks show crossed staves in one form or another, suggesting conflict, disagreement gone beyond mere words. It is interesting that the Fey Tarot depicts this card so differently. Yes, there is action, each for themselves, but those actions are not intrusive on others but actually more accommodating. But, then that's the Fey Tarot, bridging the physical and spiritual, trying to lead us to seeing our world from a slightly different place.

So, Coyoteblack, this posting is both for me and for you, to show our support for your catching-up effort. It's about time for me to start thinking about my next step. Dave

For the adept 10 steps we are doing step 10:3 for 2 cards plus our own. But how do we do the 10:4 in written form? are we just to keep that in back of our minds as we progress through the rest of the book?
I found this to be a step which we will each do differently, and as such it will depend on what you choose to do on how you would document it here or in your journal.

For me I am doing a tarot deck/book set per month. I will come here once a month and do a very general post on what I have learned, and compare my Moon card to the deck of the month's Moon card.

First decide what you want to do, and then how you could best update us on your progress. Could just a monthly post saying you did blah blah, and found X as a result. Again, it will be personal and based on what you choose to do.

Dave, reading what you said about the Fey Moon I cannot wait to get home and go pull it out and compare it to my own Lady Owl. I like the different perspective to the card you found. The full moon is also a source of light for a person traveling at night when there is no other light.

OK I am doing good so far since I have committed to going through a deck and companion book a month as my Activity 10:4. 2 months down, 2 decks/companion books :D

FEBRUARY 2009 COMPARISON PROJECT:
Deck: Alchemical Renewed
Book: The Alchemical Tarot (by Rosemary Ellen Guiley and Robert M. Place - original companion book to the Alchemical Tarot)

This is one of the most intersting and fascinating companion boooks I have ever read. The alchemical theme opens a whole new perspective to the tarot in terms of structure and meaning. I really wish they would have had the same level of detail for the minors as they did for the majors. The spread and meditation section of the book was really interesting and is definelty something I would like to try out some time.

The book is a real gem and trully explains the imagery of cards transforming some possibly disturbing images (new Lovers card and Star card) into something very beautiful, deep, and meaningful.

This deck is not a cookie cutter version of the RWS and has given some new perspectives on card meanings and interpretations.

MOON CARD COMPARISON:
The Alchemical Renewed (AR) Moon card shows a lady walking at night on a river bank. On one side of her is a brown dog laying down and facing forward. On the other a white dog standing up and looking back. The lady wears a 1/4 moon above her brow, carries the waxing moon in her left hand, and a stff with a flame in her right. She is barefoot. The river is to her left. The wanning moon is in the black sky accompanied by a crab (symbol of Cancer). There are dense clouds behind her in the sky.

The AR Moon card seems more active than the FM moon card. It is more serene and depicts a sense of clarity in darkness, an understanding. The FM Moon is somber and passive. The AR Moon is set in nature, the FM Moon is outside but in a building (on a balcony of sorts). Perhaps there is a body of water on the other side of the veranda in the FM. Other than the flame, shown on the AR Moon, the colors in both cards are very similar. Both have the dense clouds. The FM Moon shows a full moon, the AR depicts 3 moons on it one waxing, one waining, one 1/4 moon as a head adornment connnecting the figure to the moon.

The book meaning for The Moon in the AR is very positive and strong, "the night before dawn." It talks of patience, rest, and reflection, where moon energies can compel us to enter the water of the unconscious, the heart of the mystery. The Moon is depicted as a level of mastery where we control our actions due to being aware of psychological influences, whereas others are not. We are purified and ejoy freedom of choice in our activities and should show patient acceptance of the activities of others.

In this context, the FM Moon almost embodies the complete opposite. Somone confused adn trapped in the dense clouds. Someone in denial, someone trapped within themselves and their own habits and addictions. The full moon itself in the FM is the one with the awareness and patience. Perhpas the use of the owl as the main figure in the card denotes the wisdom, meaning she will make it through the darkness.

I really like the symbolism of teh AR Moon. It has expanded my view of this card. It has made me see much more in my card than what I thought was there, even after spending a year and working 17 steps with it!

The deck/book I will be using for March is the Deidre of Sorrows (Tarot Unlocked), which Faunabay has kindly loaned me. Also, I finally went back today and edited my January post to add my Moon Card comparison piece.
