View Full Version : Pendulum
Hi,
Are there some more out there who use pendulums?
I use my pendulum mainly for checking locations for bad energy/vibrations. My favourite pendulum is made of a stone called "Blaufluss", a deep midnight blue with silver sparkles. It looks like a midnight sky full of stars.
I also started combining tarot and pendulum for divination.

Way back in the mid-1960s ( NOT 1860's) I used a pedulum that came in my 'Kreskin's ESP Game'. I found that it was very, very easy for me to manipulate it- I could make it swing, circle, and change direction AT WILL. I have always been skeptical of their accuracy ever since.
Thoughts from others?

I know that there are some that swear by them, but I agree with Tarotbear. I also found that the answer that I wanted was always the answer that I got.
Thinking back, I'm wondering if I was impartial to the answer if I would have been more accurate...just a thought.

Way back when I messed around with a pendulum a little. You can supposedly tell the sex of an unborn child with one. Also answer yes/no questions. catlin , the stone you have sounds beautiful , I have never heard of it. How do you tell if the area has "bad vibes"?

i use the pendulum for things that i know, but i've forgotten. i find lost objects with it, mostly. sometimes, it's hard not to ask questions like "is my ex going to break up with so-and-so?" and then feel all self-righteous when it says yes, even though the voice in your brain says "swing up and down, just say yes...." don't use it to feel justified for things like that. but you knew that already.
just about anything can be made into a pendulum. a key, a heavy button or bead, the seed pod of a star anise flower (sold at your local grocery under spices)
i made my pendulum out of acrylic clay. the shape is hard to describe: it's like a teardrop upside down with a flat part that has a hole through it (the flat part) for the string.

I use a pendulum. It was actually my first form of divination. Yes, I know that they are easily manipulated physically, but with the proper grip, it is hard to do without being obvious. The problem that I have found is that they are hard to use for yourself because they are also easily manipulated mentally. The pendulum works by reading your own vibrations. Therefore, if you want a certain answer, that is probably the answer that you will get because that is what is in your head. On the other hand, I have found that I am very accurate when using it in readings for others. I even had one that would spell answers to questions that were not yes or no. My friend and teacher, a Native American Shaman and Druid Crone (yes I know it IS an interesting mix) taught me how to use my pendulum and make different charts. (Alphabet, numbers, direction, probabilities, etc.) Gemini was right, if you are impartial or do not conciously know the answer, the more accurate you will be. The last time I "played" with it with a friend and non-believer, I had about a 90% accuracy rate. He asked me yes or no questions that I could not possibly know the answer to. Did I have milk with my dinner, did I leave work early last week, was I late this morning, etc. He went from non-believer to totally freaked out real quick. Luckily, if I want a pendulum reading, I have several friends who are very adept with theirs and we swap readings on a pretty regular basis.
I have also found that my pendulum and an alphabet chart are a great way to channel my guides. You have to be very careful when doing this because you may also channel things that you do not want to channel. I recommend a circle or at the very least a cleansing chant and a prayer of intent.
I hope you can understand all of this, I do tend to ramble. It's a good thing I'm cute or I would never get away with it! }>
Hi,
Thanks to all your replies!
The stone I mentioned also exists in a reddish brown colour with golden sparkles.
The history goes that this stone was created by accident by some Italian monks in the time of the Enlightenment period. They tried to find something else (maybe the Holy Grail?) and came across this stone. Although he is made artificially, he counts among the semi-precious stones because of his "construction".
I check bad vibes with a chart I place under the pendulum and on this chart the "voltage" of the area is indicated.

I use the pendulum usually when I want to find lost items. It, of course, works wonderfully for items that I have lost of my own. But it also works wonderfully for finding lost articles that others have lost.
I make my own pendulum. I use beads, crystals, etc. I have made one for a friend that is a fairy. But unfortunately, although it works for me, it doesn't work for her. :(
Like most of you, I have had "problems" with the pendulum, especially when I'm hoping for a "yes" answer or otherwise. I too, have found that I can manipulate it with my thoughts. One question I have is, has anyone gotten a circle for an answer as opposed to up and down for yes, and left and right for no. Does a circle mean "maybe"? Also, has anyone ever used a talking pendulum? I saw one in the Pyramid Collection catalog, and was wondering if anyone has used this? By the way, how do you find lost items with the pendulum?
Lots of love,
Misifu

Hi there!
The talking pendulum in the Pyramid catalog is similar to the method I use with my alphabet chart. For me, a circular response usually means that not enough of the situation has played out for a definite yes or no answer, free will and all that. "Maybe" for my pendulum is diagonal top right to bottom left.
As far as lost objects goes, I do it one of two ways. The simplest is just ask yes/no style questions about the location of the missing object. "Is it in the house", "Is it in the kitchen?" etc. Once you have it narrowed down to a room or location out side, keep getting more specific. "Is it under the Oak Tree?" "Is it on the table?" etc.
Another way, if you know that it is in the house or wherever, draw a rough diagram of the house or area. Hold your pendulum over each room or section and ask if it is there and wait for a response. Once you have narrowed it down this way, draw a diagram of just that area. If it is in the living room, draw a "map" showing the couch, coffee table, etc. and ask whatever questions are appropriate until you find your item.
I hope that explination is understandable. Good Luck!
Thank you, StarShine, I will give it a try!
Love, Misifu
The pendulum was my first method of divination. I have two, a plain metal one (cone shaped) and a beautiful rose quartz.
Several of you have mentioned that it is easy to manipulate a pendulum. Like many intuitive tools, your thoughts and energy can greatly affect a pendulum. That's why it's crucial to be sure to clear your pendulum and then to center yourself and think only of the question. Do NOT think about the answer. You must detach emotionally from the answer. Some people comment that they have a hard time reading tarot for themselves because they have a hard time detaching from the results and see what they want to see. A pendulum is really no different in that sense. Done correctly, a pendulum can be highly accurate.
I use my pendulum to determine if certain foods would be good for me, which vitamin or herb is better or the one I need. The lady that taught me the pendulum uses it for nearly everything. Whenever she and her hubby buy a new car, they use a pendulum to determine if that is the best car for their needs. Several have already mentioned using it to find things. My teacher uses it to determine which herb or essential oil would be best for balancing a particular physical problem.
Just like third person tarot readings, it's really not appropriate to do third person readings without that person's knowledge and permission.
Someone asked if anyone had circular movements for their pendulum. Mine are front to back and side to side; however, my teacher's are clockwise and counterclockwise. Some people have back and forth and clockwise. Any combination is possible. You just have to get together with your pendulum for that one.
I absolutely love using the pendulum. :) I find it quite easy to use. It's quick and easy to carry with me. It took me a while before it would respond to me, but once I got my first response I have been able to pick up most anything and use it as a pendulum.
I use it when I do intuitive work on myself.
See how I go on and on. I *love* my pendulums!!!
Catcha later,
Jimilyn
I forgot to mention that I was taught to hold my pendulum between my index, middle and first two fingers of my right hand. That way I have a positive, negative, and neutral finger holding the pendulum. :)

The pendulum was my first form of divination as well. And, no, I don't always get the answers I want.
I bought quite a few, though, before I found a clear quartz that seems to resonate for me.
Cheers,

My teacher (Reiki, Tarot, and other things) just gave me an old pendulum. It is a heart shaped amethyst, which happens to be my stone too. I have yet to try it out, but I am anxious. I did try a cheap store bought pendulum and only got as far as 'please show me what yes/no looks like' Yes seemed to be a counter-clockwise circle, and no was vague, somwhere between swinging left right and maybe a circle too. I need to try some more, but it is certainly interesting.

I have used the crystal pendulums alot along with dowsing rods too.
The pendulum is a great thing but i have made many methods and ways to actually test the accuracy of the answers. Instead of myself holding the chain to which the crystal is suspended i have used a clamp device which my friend made and clamp the chain securely onto this , but still keep my thumb and forefinger on the end of the chain. It works a treat have a go at it.
but i still like to use it without the clamp ;)

Yes is forward and back

No is left and right
or counter clock wise

The Doc.
I always check the directions before I start asking questions, it kind of gives me a heads up if it goes in other directions than I am use to that I could be speaking to a spirit other than my spirit guide.
I tried using the pendulum for the first time this morning to find a lost item, I lost my contact lens and I was blown away at how accurate it was.

I used to use a pendulum. Not with a crystal, but a simple ring-on-a-string type. I had learned, at the time, that a ring was best to do this with in the absense of a crystal. I was quite surprised by the accuracy. Why I ever stopped, I'm not sure. I was quite a bit younger then, which may explain it. ;)
I think one of the most useful aspects of a pendulum may be to clarify your own mind. Since the motion is controlled by both your energy and subconscious, when torn between two things (or more), you can allow your subconscious to make the decision, and to help you learn about what you really want.
A pendulum can be used to search for things both within and without.
Hello everyone,
Possibly this may help - "The Pendulum Kit" by Sig Lonegren contains a pendulum and instruction book with charts.
The booket was a great teacher and I went through each exercise when I first purchased this kit. If you do each exercise completely there will be no question in anyones mind the direction of "YES / NO / MAYBE". My directions for those answers have never changed or waivered and I never receive a yes answer just because it's what I may want. The answer is always what the answer it should be.
Also, you do not need to speak your words out loud - your thoughts are energy and go into the universe the same as if you spoke them. I have used the Pendulum for friends and in very personal matters I tell them just ask the questions with their mind...and the pendulum swings for the answer. I never speak out loud when I use it for myself either and there is no mistaking what the answer is.
Possibly just purchasing a Pendulum and not giving yourself the proper training could be the issue. The Pendulum in the kit worked fine and I have a crystal pendulum with a rhodenite cross which I hold and it works just the same.
The kit explains that each time you use the pendulum you must ask the questions as you did in the beginning lessons to be ready to use this tool.
I hope this was helpful for everyone.
Clare
I posted this in a seperate thread a couple days ago, but I think it might be escaping notice, so I'll try here.
I have just within the last week or so gotten seriously interested in the pendulum. I have three, one of which I don't care for, while I really like the other two. Last night I tried working with my favorite pendulum (Quarts weight, with a "goldstone" at the other end) to determine the color and suit of cards pulled off the top of a well shuffled deck. It got 8 out of 8 right as far as color goes, and 3 out of 3 wrong as far as suit goes.
I'd start by asking 'is this a red card' and then 'is this card a heart.' Like I said, the color was right every time, but the suit was wrong... Any ideas???
Then, being the impatient one, I decided to try to look into my most recent past life experiences...... The success rate there went WAY down. For example, I was supposedly a civile war soldier that died on 02 April 1902...... Well, anyone who knows history, knows that the dates don't add up. (When I asked "Did someone kill me on purpose?" the answer was yes, then I asked "Did I die as a result of the war?" again the answer was yes. Anyway, I'll try some more later today, but any advice would be great.
Tks

The only information I have on pendulum work is D.J. Conway's Little Book of Pendulum Magic. It is informative and has some good charts and excersised in it. I am a seat of the pants dowser though. I agree with other comments here...they are easy to manipulate and I always get the answer I am most invested in. Conway and others say you cannot be invested in the answer. How do you do that???? My pendulum work seems far truer for others. I used mine with my daughter (we were on the phone) I told her to ask things that I couldn't possibly know the answer to. And alll the answers were correct. So I am not sure what I think of them.
I haven't used them to find things and will have to try that. I am always misplacing something so it shouldn't be long. :D
Jim.... Hi there :)...were you just asking questions? Or were you using the pendulum with a chart or talking board? This is something I am interested in trying also. I have been debating painting my own board for pendulum work for some time now. I have a difficult time forming questions that will give me in depth answers for something that can only answer yes/no questions. Thus the talking board with letters for spelling. What do you think?
Funnily enough I have never been able to manipulate mine even if I wish for an answer I will always get the answer from my spirit guide.
I was just asking simple yes and no questions.
For the cards, It was simple "Is this a red card?" Obviously, if the answer was NO then it was black. Then depending on the color I asked "Is this a heart/club"
1005 right on color, 100% wrong on suit.
As far as the past life exploration, I asked, "In my most recent past life, was I born in the 1900's?" Then went backwards until I got a yes, then I did the same for each month, and then the date as well. Anyway, it seems that SOME of the the answers may have been correct according to a Reiki Master and Psychic that I know.....
I got a bunch of charts and letter boards etc when I got my first pendulum. But they really didn't interest me much. If you have two answers opposite each other, I imagine it would be hard to tell which way the pendulum was actually swinging and which was the 'backstroke.'
I think that for awhile I am going to use my pendulums for finding things. I don't have any problem making them move but I think they are telling me what I want to hear. If you are suppose to remain unattatched to the answer I think they would work truely only for someone elses question. I know that I and my friend can ask the same question and get totally different answers.
I have some boards that came in a gift set with a pendulum. The pendulum is not one that I would have purchased on my own but the boards are neat. There are twelve of them, nice artwork, and each board covers one area. Like Location or banishing, love, etc. It has a book with it that, although it isn't what I would term in depth, is helpful. I basically bought it for the boards anyway. The set is called the "Truth Fairy" the people who designed it also designed "the Enchanted Tarot" and The Psychic Circle" neither of which I am familiar with. I suppose some would call it "fluffy" but I think I have had good results with it. I bought it at a local book store so I am sure it is fairly easy to find. Just a thought anyway.
I think the Conway book is the better of the two books. There are 6 or so past life charts in her book. Half moon and sectioned off by date or occupation or what have you. You might look into that..."A Little Book of Pendulum Magic" D.J. Conway
It is probably alot of trial and error and practice anyway. :)

I also started combining tarot and pendulum for divination.
I am just starting to learn myself. Well I just started like 3 weeks ago, and I am learning a lot every day. Anyone out there have any advice for a real newbie??
I have a three tone Jasper one (black, white and red) , with a gold chain. Two more on order.:-) One Amethyst, and the other is a crystal with pearls and all. It is a dream keeper pendy, have you heard of those?
http://www.pendulumsandmore.com/index.php?cPath=54&osCsid=8c554b41ea19f57f9fb7744c91d5bebb
If you click on one of the dream keeper pendies it will explain the concept. I ordered the first one....
Catlin, I've never heard of that stone, but yours sounds gorgeous!!!
They say it is normal in the beginning for your answers to be swayed by your desires, but in time and given enough practice and experience you can learn to get past that. It is a long learning period. It does seem harder to learn than Tarot, but I can see it is worth the work for me. I have heard many people say that it takes about a year to become truly proficent at it and to get truly accurate answers.
Where I am now, I am just doing practice exercises, specifically the one where you choose 6 cards from a regular playing card deck, 5 that are red and one that is black. Shuffle face down, and lay them in a row and try to use the pendy to find the black one. Tonight I got 4 tries right out of 10, which is not bad, as I only started these exercises 5 days ago. So there is some real improvement going on. :-)
Still it is a fascinating tool, and I think it will be worth the amount of work it takes to get there. :-) I am sure I will use it for all kinds of things, like finding lost items, choosing a job, partner...many life decisions. And I have a book on using pendy's to programme your subsconsious to create the life you want. I can't wait to get good enough to try that.:-) I will probably also use it one day with Tarot. Any yes/no questions in a Tarot reading I will leave to the pendy.:-)
BTW, here is a great site for pendy stuff:

Several of you have mentioned that it is easy to manipulate a pendulum. Like many intuitive tools, your thoughts and energy can greatly affect a pendulum. That's why it's crucial to be sure to clear your pendulum and then to center yourself and think only of the question. Do NOT think about the answer. You must detach emotionally from the answer.
I know I am a total beginner, but through some trial and error I have found some things that work for me and some that don't. Maybe some will help someone.:-)
In my effort to detach from wanting a specific answer this is what has worked for me so far. I find if I look at the pendy as I ask the question, I start to anticipate which way it is about to move and think if that is the answer I wanted, and voila there you go, inaccurate answer.
So I tried just closing my eyes and telling myself I did not care which answer I got. Then when it was swinging, opening them and seeing what had happened. More accurate results that way.
Lately what has helped even more is to meditate a bit before during and after. :-) Right before I ask the question, to relax my body completley, and empty my mind for a short while. Then, when I feel relaxed enough,I ask the question and kindof defocus my eyes, watch the candle flame flicker and do not let any thoughts in. Then I look at the pendy in a short while it is already moving.
When I can do this and not think of anything at all before the answer comes up, it seems to be becoming much more accurate for me. I am working on doing this whole process prior to each question. Medication before, during and after. And it has the added benifit that the meditation just makes you feel wonderful after.:-)

Here is what directions my Pendy uses:
Pendy Movements
1. Yes = an backwards and forwards direction
2. No = a side-to-side direction
3. I don’t know/question is unclear = clockwise circle
4. Not in my best interest to know = counterclockwise circle
5. Probably Yes = \
6. Probably No = /
- Yes and no answers are self-explanatory
- Maybes (I don’t knows) imply that the energy patterns are not yet set and some decisions still need to be made before the outcome can be determined, or that the question is unclear.
- If you receive a “not in your best interest to know” then the answer to the question could alter a spiritual of karmic lesson you have to learn. or it is none of your business. “Not in your best interest to knows” are often received when you are asking questions about other people, in other words you are being nosey.
- Probably Yes means as things stand right now, “it” whatever you asked about will probably happen (although it is not too late to change it), or is probably yes
- Probably No means just the opposite.

Jim, they say it takes a year to get proficient at the pendulim. I think the only thing you did "wrong" was to ask yourself a question that you have not yet developed the skill level to handle. Those are not at all easy questions!
And btw, any feeling of impatience you have will also mess up the asnwers you get. Any excess emotions while penduling create a kind of static, like on a radio, and it makes it harder for the correct signals to get through and reach you.
Keep practicing and you will get better and better at it with time. And probabably also you had an emotional attachment to the answer. It is not an easy thing to stay unemotional when the issue we are contemplating is our own death. And if you have any emotional attachment to getting a specific asnwer that is the answer you will get, whether it is accurate or not. Iread somewhere that 95% of learning to be good with a pendy is learning to develop the emotional detachment to the answers. And no that is not as easy as it sounds, but it is definitely a skill that can be learnt.:-)
Don't worry, if you keep at it, you will get to the point where you can answer those questions.
Hang in there,

How has it been, have you been practicing with the exercises? Have you gotten some right and some wrong? I'm not an expert either, just started to learn about a month ago, although I have read a ton on the topic, but I know they say it takes about a year to get good at it. I know the hard thing for me of course is clearning my mind of thoughts and expectations as I wait for the asnwer. But I wonder if just a little shake could make such a big difference. I hope you can find a way to make it work for you if that is what you want. Maybe a different tool of dowsing. Do you think one that you can hold in both hands would make it easier, like an L-Rod. I just read something on a web site that it is the most popular form of dowsing.
Here is the article, hope it helps:

(see section under : "Most dowsers use two 'dowsing rods' or a pendulum."
I do wish you all the best with it.

I've been using a pendulum (and L-Rod's too) for about four years. I just wanted to tell you about an interesting exercise, that involves feeling your own energy (and the energy of others - if you practise on other people).
Take your pendulum, and move it slowly, from the outside of your body. Start about an inch away from your skin - observe the movement of the pendulum. Then, move the pendulum out another inch, observe the movement - another inch, observe the movement....and so on. You should notice a pull toward yoursElf, when the pendulum is inside your auric field. Once you've moved the pendulum outside of your auric field, it will no longer pull. This helps you to identify your own energy - and where your aura begins and ends.
There have been times when I've used my pendulum to seek out a spirit presence that I've felt in my room and it has pulled quite noticeably.

"The Pendulum Kit" by Sig Lonegren as also mentioned by Clare (post #20) I think is a great teaching tool for pendulum users.
I have used his methods for many years and after a few months initially of patient practise, it has served me very well. I use it mainly for finding things, but on a large scale. Like I use it to scoure maps, or street directories and the like.
I have found people overseas I wished to locate for the police and stolen items. I have also used it when I have been fossicking for quartz and river panning for saphires.
It takes practise and I really have to have a strong and integral purpose for wanting to use it. I dont find it works well for me with what I would call trivial matters, but thats me not the pendulum. I have a strong respect for it because I know how accurate it has been for me, and I ask the pendulum also if I can use it for the purpose I wish to get an answer for. I always check the yes and no swings before each set of questions or session, and it is very important to have a very specific question to ask it. I find it answers literally!
Hope it helps

Hi Bar,
oh my gosh, those pendulums are simply beautiful....did you see that heaven's gate and sterling light ones? (http://www.pendulumsandmore.com/index.php?cPath=57) Their wands are beautiful too. I love the way they have those big beads and flat hearts etc at the end of the string for you to hold onto.
I have three pendulums too...one of which I made (with a crystal) and used a flat metal tiger's head as the bit to hold onto.
Seeing the pendulums and wands on that website is making me want to post a pic of one of my special pendulums and my wand. *Hmm, goes off to contemplate her snapping tools.
By the way, I noticed that site has a link to a pendulum chart book. I have one too (different from the one on the link). It is full of charts that you swing your pendulum over to get answers on a varity of topics. I'm not at home now, but when I return, I'll post the name of the book. It was under Aus $20 and is really interesting. It also has an accuracy chart on every page so you can test to make sure your swinging is accurate for that day.
One last piece of information that you may find interesting......according to a book that I read, you are supposed to ask your pendulum for permission each time you would like to use it. And, if it swings no, you are supposed to put the pendulum away until another time because it indicates that the time is not right for you to use it.

I love everything on the site. I don't think there is anything there I wouldn't love to own and the woman who runs it is so sweet. She even runs another pendy forum that I joined too.
I have these two:

and
http://www.pendulumsandmore.com/product_info.php?cPath=54&products_id=259
(and one more that was my first. I bought it on another site and there is no longer a picture of it there)
I find the concept of the Dream Keeper one so cool.:-)
I have one book: A Little Book of Pendulum Magic, by D.J. Conway, that the second half of the book is charts. They seem to be quite accurate for me already. I would be interested in hearing more about your book. :-)
Love to see your pics if you ever post them. The tiger's head one sounds really really nice too.
As for the asking the pendulum for permission to use it, I have never tried that yet, although mostly I have just done practice exercises so far and not really real readings. I have 6 positions, one is "DWA/not in my best interest to know. Which means either that the pendy doesn't want to answer (DWA) or that it will ruin a karmic lesson I am mearnt to learn on my own if it asnwers....I just figured if it did not want to asnwer it would tell me. I did once and I put it away again for that day. Do you think I should ask anyway?

Bar, oh, those beads on the dream pendulum look handmade. Gorgeous. I have a simple, two beaded (one to swing, one to hold onto) mini-pendulum that I keep at work. At one stage, one of the guys would come in here every Friday afternoon to get me to do his footy tips.
Runestar, you might be interested in this site (http://www.crystalinks.com/pendulum.html) that shows some charts. Note, that chart book on the other web site is not the one I have. Am trying to google for my book to post but you may have to wait till I get home. :)

Hi Catlin - The stone you have mentioned for your Pendulum sounds like Blue Goldstone. The orange version is just called plain goldstone. It is man made with glass and copper for the goldstone and I think silver for the blue goldstone.
In regards to the pendulum kits does anyone knoe who makes them or where you can buy them from?
Thanks :)

Hey Emeraldgirl,
There's a [ebay link removed by moderator] Pendulum Kit going on Aussie EBay for $12. Pity you didn't ask earlier, as one sold on Ebay for only $5.
