View Full Version : New Baba Store has launched!

It's online at the old address:

http://www.baba-store.com

I've moved over all accounts, but please note that you have to log in using your EMAIL with this system, not a user name - I think it's simpler. You may also need to change your password. We did try to move all passwords encrypted (we didn't want to try to see anyone's password) but I expect about one in ten of them will be SNAFUed in some way. Fortunately the password reset in this shop is so much simpler than in the last.

Actually, this shop is better in every way! So enjoy it please.

We still have masses to do, (for example, some images are missing and in some places we mysteriously have huge fonts!) but it seemed best to go live as the old shop hadn't been updated for ages - there are lots of new designs on this one. And lots to come!

___________

Oh, I ought to say, I think it's a bit slow, so please be patient. We are in a queue to go on to a much faster server asap but it may be a month or so yet as apparently our poor host had a huge demand for this.

It looks great Karen.

One thing, the £ conversion isn't right..... I think it is doing it the wrong way. There are around 1.29 euros to the pound, so the pound price should be smaller than the euro price. But it is coming out bigger which is deeply scary and made me go 'eek!'. The dollar conversion looks about right though. (I checked just in case the £ had sunk yet lower.)

Aerin

ps any chance of a 'cards Alice' print and eco bag? *sweet smile*

Right.

I've ordered one of those turquoise tarot bags I've had my eye on for aaaaaages.....

It all worked I think :). Once I got rid of the deeply scary show the price in £ option.

Yes, I know. I actually took the prices down a bit as the prices on our old shop were really, really low.

But those silk bags are worth it - honestly, they're gorgeous, the quality of the fabric is brilliant.

are there less designs to choose from for the tarot bags form the BG and VR now? aww :(

baba-prague
07-05-2008, 01:55
No, there should actually be more. Which ones are missing? It's probably just that a lot of things are not yet on the new shop. Though on the other hand a lot of new designs are there. It's a bit of a matter of what we've photographed so far.

baba-prague
07-05-2008, 01:57
The BG are here - but I notice some pictures are still missing. I'll have to get those in.

Well..... but the £ price is wrong because £s are still worth more than euros. Honest :) - I settled for the $ price because I can do the sums from that.

I'm so looking forward to the bag.

Was I first to get an order in? (not that it's a competition, just wondering :))

OH! I checked them this morning. Thanks for that. There may be a glitch in the GBP price, I'll go and take a look.

Oh, and no, you were not the first in fact - but nearly :)

07-05-2008, 02:23
Agh! Thanks Aerin. Yes, I think you'll find the GBP price a bit more normal now - ooo er.

This shop - weirdly - does not do the currencies automatically so I have to do them every so often. I'll just have to get myself into the habit until they bring in the upgrade where it will be done by the system itself.

The link you sent me in the email announcement is not working--goes to a 404 error. You might want to check that out. But I knew that I would find this thread here at ATF, so All was not Lost! You really have done a wonderful wonderful job with the shop.

oh is there a button to change it to $?

Yes, top righthand corner - you'll see it marked "currency". It's not 100% accurate as I have to change the exchange rate manually myself - but it should be very, very close. (er, I can hear Aerin falling around giggling from here - well very close when I remember to change Euro into GBP and not the other way around).

Really? Oh drat. You know, I sort of didn't expect the emails to get through at all and I was panicking a bit in any case. After six months the whole thing made me a bit nervous!

I need to change all the links on the other sites now.

Then at some point I need to change the Etsy prices to be in line. But for now I am too tired so if you rush to Etsy you may get a bit of a bargain - just for ATers :)

Ah yes. That's actually right. The slightly annoying thing (which I have to find a way around) is that every fabric option list has to have a name. But of course in some cases you want to use the same list for more than one type of bag. So I am using "bone chapel" fabric options also for the Alchemical (they seemed to go). It's interesting that this is confusing - yes, I can see that now. Well, please for now just choose the silk you'd like and ignore the name of the list. But over the weekend I will work on that. Many thanks Nina - it's this sort of feedback that's invaluable as it's very hard to put myself in a customer's shoes after working on this for months.

Not yet. But Alex has been taking pictures of all fabrics and one thing we hope to add - when we can work out the best way - is photos of the fabrics. I know that's important.

We do have one purple kimono fabric bag that I'll try to photograph for now. It is textured - it's actually very beautiful fabric in my opinion. A dark purple with a textured kind of fairly abstract floral woven in. The black silk is simply a very high quality black Japanese kimono silk - jet black and smooth.

Hmm, you're right, we need to photograph these don't we?

Oh dear. I think my life from now on will be devoted to the shop - but to be honest I quite like that.

Alex bought me a wonderful box of Marks and Spencers (yes we have them here) box of chocolates as a site launch present. So I'm a happy bunny!

Embla

Both the purple and the black kimono sound wonderful....

Is it nolonger possible to add fringe to the bags as an option?

But... doesn't the Alchemical Wedding come in gold silk (like in the picture)? It seems I can only choose blue/black, wine red, black. Or am I misunderstanding?

baba-prague

I should get more of the options sorted today. As I say, it's incredibly useful to have feedback on this because I am a bit "punch drunk" with looking at the shop for so long. There was a lot of back-end stuff to do for months. All worth it though I think, I'm pretty impressed with this shop too - and like you, I love the "recently viewed items" feature. The wishlist is good too I think - it can act like a bit of a bookmark to get back to things quickly and as the shop grows (we plan to expand it a lot this year) that will be very useful.

I still need to sit down, pull a name out of a hat and give the gift token for the last thread (the "what bag?" one). I will do that this weekend I think.

baba-prague
07-05-2008, 20:20
"Alchemical" now has its own options Nina. This shop makes "options" a bit of a palavar (odd how most things are easier to set up than in the old shop but one or two are harder) so it may take me a while to get all the fringe options in place.

Now, the next step is more non-illustrated bags and more bags with antique fabrics. We have a bit of a back-log of things like this to get done!

Oh - and Alice tarot bags of course.

What a FABULOUS store, Karen!!! I like it so much better than the other site, mainly because (for whatever reason) all the print ran into each other on my screen... Even setting it at 'smallest' it would all run together, which made shopping a real dedicated endeavor, *lol*

This shop just fits neatly onto the page... All the type is in the right place... I can switch to USDollars... I can add stuff to a 'Wish List'... I can readily see my Points... EVERYTHING is easy, easy, easy!!!... And all right there in front of your eyes, *vvvbs*

And, of course, all your wares are BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL!!! *lol*

p.s. On the Tarot Bag page, when you click on the BBC Temperance kitty, she shows up in the little picture on the top left... but the big picture below shows 'The Tarot Reader' from BBC instead... just thought you might want to know... You can add it to your list of 10-zillion things you have to do, *lol*

Oh thanks for that Faire. I will go and sort it now.

The new shop is going to be lots of work for a week or two while I sort out all the little blips (today I had to AGAIN make sure that the secure certificate is properly installed - we never had one for the last shop but I thought that added security was good for this one). But it'll be worth it because yes, it's just so much easier all round. Adding new products to the old shop was sometimes such a lot of effort that - don't laugh - we have bags that simply never made it on there. Some just sat in the studio until visitors here snapped them up.

This new shop is simpler for me to operate (now that it's all set up - the set up was a big job) so you'll see far more new things. We have three more brocade bags with no picture in the offing. I have literally about six boxes of antique and vintage fabrics to make up, and we have two new bag designs under development. So - all systems go! It's really a lot of fun.

Increasingly I think I'll use Etsy for one-offs and things like that as well as the usual designs - it's amazing how many bags we have like that - sometimes special orders that we made two of, or antique fabrics where there is only one left, and so on. But again, that will take a bit of time to organise.

Meantime, by the way, we have Aida, our new assistant, busily developing herbal mixtures (she is a herbalist) so goodness knows when all that will be incorporated!

________
ps - for those who don't know, our former assistant, Vassilisa, was taken seriously ill and is no longer able to work. She is recovering slowly after a large operation and has gone back to live in her village. We stay in touch on a very regular basis and we're relieved to hear her sounding better each time. We do miss her though - as do our cats, who just adored her.

Romana! She works with us ALL the time (lately the poor woman has been extremely busy but she seems to like it) - she is also a lot of fun. One day I must ask her if I can post the "Penguin Skiing trip" pictures - at Christmas she made six or so wonderful penguin costumes and she and her friends all dressed up and went skiing in the mountains here. The photos are just hysterical - as are the expressions of the other people around!

By the way, she designs fashion out of scraps of fabric - so with our full support she uses all the tiny scraps of leftover silk. So nothing goes to waste and we feel quite "green" to boot.

ps - this is a bit off-thread (okay, I will bring it on thread and say I have some old vintage peacock-feather design Liberty's fabric that I want to make into bags) but as I type this our new local peacocks are making such a racket! The nuns in the convent below us used to keep hens - for years. Then this year they have suddenly launched out and now have peacocks. It's a bit exotic for a convent but oh well, these are quite fun nuns as anyone who follows my blog will know. Noisy birds though. Anyway, in their honour I will do the peacock bags this summer. I've had the fabric for two years now.

I will sit quietly (some hope - it's been so busy here!) and add the fringe option to as many bags as I can over the next couple of days. I will also check the Alchemical bag right now - I added it but perhaps I didn't press the right "update" button or something.

I have also reminded Alex that we need as many silk and kimono fabric photos as possible. I think we may need to call up Simon, the very cheerful photographer who has been working with us, and ask for some help here as there is a bit of a bottleneck.

Still, it's all coming along very nicely and the shop will gradually fill out more and more. We have some new designs for autumn already in the pipeline.

So - anyone like to come here and be a summer intern? ;)

Edited to add. I just checked. The fringe option is definitely now there for the Alchemical bag. Please do let me know if it isn't showing or something. By the way, we are running very low on antique fringing and can't seem to get any more, so we had to put the price of that up a bit (it was more or less at cost before). I do have some (about three yards) very beautiful dark cream silk fringing though, so I will try to add that option at some point for the bags that it will work with.

Oh, oh, oh... I REALLY like the way you've set up the Flower Oracle bags page... It's all condensed being on one page like that... It makes it easier to shop, looking at them all in one place... I like, I like, *s*

I think we'll have to organise mass immigration :)

Thanks for that feedback on the layout. Yes, you know, it's better. I was a bit slow on the uptake because we couldn't do it this way on the old shop (it only allowed ten pictures maximum per page). I think I'll gradually move as many of the tarot bags as possible into this kind of display. It IS easier all round I think.

I edited that immediately after it was mentioned here. So the NO fringes is indeed possible. Nina, maybe do a refresh in case your screen is caching? That might be the problem.
It's not. I've tried everything and I still only have three options 1) Gold Antique Fringe 2) Gold fringing 3) Silver fringing

Well...

I love the new display too, very accessible! Perhaps it would be good to somehow name the different pictures of backs showing fabric options, just to make sure you are getting exactly what you want, and to avoid misunderstandings? Denimblue, turqoise and midblue for example, can be displayed differently by different browsers.

This is really bizarre, because I checked it and it's fine on my screen. Nina, please will you email me the link (not here but by email if possible) and I'll check it all again in the morning? I wonder if there is something odd going on?

Edited to add - oh drat, no, now it's not working on mine. I THINK I know what it might be. Give me a couple of minutes.

Yes - now it works.

Oh goodness. That tells me something. I need to go and make sure that when I change options all the products with that option are also updating.

Thanks Nina for keeping on about this. You were quite right. But I changed this option ages back and thought that it would update. It seems it doesn't do that automatically.

Thank-you! Right now it still feels like learning to drive or something. The new cart is very splendid but did take a lot of learning and we still have odd snafus - like the "no fringe" saga - which made me realise that the options work slightly differently from how I'd assumed.

Still, it's all working out very well and I do love the way in which everything - back and front end - is so much better organised.

The new shop is so easy to navigate. :) I like the way the options for the flower oracle bags are displayed.

Karen, do you have any plans to offer antique/vintage fabric options for the flower oracle bags? I would love to have one like that.

baba-prague
14-05-2008, 02:40
Yes, definitely. I just need to find some way of photographing all the options.

We have been so overwhelmed with response on the antique fabrics that we plan (I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but bear with me) to limit certain fabrics to certain prints, rather than trying to offer any and every antique fabric with all prints.

So for example, I have some tea-coloured kimono (and it's just the most wonderful silk - very high quality indeed) which I'm only planning to offer on the Flower Oracle bags. I just need to work out what to put with what, get the samples made and then do the photography. Just! :)

It will actually let us offer more antique fabrics as it'll be more controllable and means we can make a small stack each time rather than just one or two.

That is good news! I'm not surprised that there has been so much enthusiasm for the antique fabrics, as they are so lovely and unique. It makes a lot of sense for you to preselect the fabrics that would be best suited to bags -- it would be too hard to guess from pictures on the web. I will be looking forward to seeing the new fabrics! :D

I tried the order tracking doodah (was curious that's all, see a button hit a button that's me) and it didn't love me.... it sent an e-mail but the e-mail link just showed an error on the site.

I'm really pleased with the new eco-bag options.... I almost saw an Alice Cards one for a moment there....;)

There WILL be Alice Eco totes. Basically, we have all sorts of plans with those - there's lots happening.

Thanks for the heads-up on the order tracking. It hasn't really been used yet as the shop has only been open for a week, but it sounds like it's time I paid it some attention and got it going. As I understand it, we need to put in tracking numbers and then it does its thing (which I suspect may be quite basic - international tracking is basic). It will at least let people know that their order has been sent and provide a postal tracking number.

Are you going to do some eco totes that aren't white? Please!

I love my BG world eco tote but it just gets so grimy so quickly. It would be better to have some in a different color - even off white - so the dirt wouldn't show so easily. At least for me. :)

Yes, it is. It's a really good colour with that bag. Actually, the teal is gorgeous with it too, but in a very different way. I am just in love with the teal silks we have right now - a bit of an obsession!

hmmm...trying to order an Alice tarot bag, and even though it says in a variety of prints, it seems that the only one i can order is the tea party.
While it gives me options for which color I would like, there is no option for the different prints. Is that because all of the others are sold out? :( I hope not...I would love one of Alice falling with the cards....

I'll look immediately. The "options" option has turned out to be a bit tricky. Sometimes I need to install it more than once to get it to "take". I'll go down the rabbit hole right now...

No, we're not sold out of any of these yet, so again, it must be this thing where I need to reset the options. You'll have gathered from Nina's posts above that it can take two or three shots - I think somehow the shop tends to refer to the old options and I actually need to remove that and install the new ones. Hmm, I suppose it's like anything, it has its quirks that one needs to get to know.

baba-prague
17-05-2008, 22:16
I ought to say that it tends to be the antique fabric bags that we sell out of fast because we can't make more. So far pretty much all the prints with silk are available - though later in the year we may simply have to discontinue some to allow for new things.

Okay, Alice drawstrings (small ones) now all working - plus there is a fringe option.

I'll sit today and check that all the others are working properly. Once they are set they seem to stay set - but initially, as I say, it often seems to take two or three goes. I think I just need to find out the sequence this shop likes (and maybe pat its little head and tell it what good software it is?)

Back again!

Okay, the Bohemian Cats small drawstrings are now here with many new prints available (and Grumpy Persian still to add - he was too grumpy to agree to it this time around):

The Alice small drawstrings are here - five print options so far with possibly one other on the way:
http://baba-store.com/index.php?target=products&product_id=30090

I haven't put a teal silk option in there. I can't really decide if I should. I think the denim blue and copper are maybe my favourites with these prints.

Karen I just wanted to tell you that what I ordered just came in and I am SO IMPRESSED with the workmanship. The messenger bag is just beautiful and looks great with the black trim. I love it so much, it is replacing my current purse (I hate having to drag around 5 bags for whatever). This fits the bill beautifully. I am also quite fond of Alice and the hooka smoking catapiller.

The workmanship of the high priestess bag is just gorgeous. I am again blown away with the printing and the stitching. Very nice.

Thank you so very much.

Baroli :D *busily putting her decks and "stuff" into the messenger bag. Hmmm, my Lap will fit in there as well. COOL!!

I'm glad - and thank-you! Quality is important to us - well, to everyone, but you know what I mean. I joke about testing the bags - but I really do test them. Unfortunately Minnie (our tabby-in-charge) also tests them. Right now she is lying on my black messenger bag - I have an "All You Need is Love" - and she's snoring quietly. So - seems to meet feline approval, but I just know how long it's going to take me to get all the hairs off!

By the way, we hope to have a shoulder bag in the style of the messenger later this year - a bit smaller and more "dressy" and with lots of prints. If all goes well :)

Frannie!

I did this randomly by pulling a number and then looking up to see which person posted at that number on the thread.

I'll pm Frannie tomorrow with the gift token details.

Sorry that this took so long!

Anyway, we are working hard on Art Nouveau bags and Alex also finalised one very strange, weird and wonderful bag that we've been working on for an age. I'll be posting all over my blog when these new bags are ready.

Meantime we're expanding the range of prints available on different bag styles - which is taking a while to organise but which should be really good when it's done. Part of the motivation for the new shop was always to allow us to expand the range more easily, while still being easy to search.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone who replied to this thread and congratulations to Frannie.
