5 of pentacles as hidden desires

roswell

5 of Pentacles

5 of Pentacles: Left "out in the cold", in need of charity and or sympathy

Upright: The need and or opportunity to be more charitable or sympathetic

Reversed: tendency towards self pity, feeling sorry for yourself

just my take,

I'm at a complete and utter loss for how this card can be attributed to a hidden desire.

This reading was for a closeted gay man who is married to a woman, pertaining to a relationship he had (and just ended) with another closeted gay male who is also married to a woman and ended their relationship because, as he told my client, he was "overwhelmed" and wanted to go back to his life that he was accustomed to.

So, 5 of pentacles as hidden desires for this man towards the querent...would that be to cast aside social roles and traditions and come out of the closet together?

Other than that, I am stuck.

I believe the older Ettellia definition for this card is "ill-fated lovers." (I'm referencing Huson's deck "Dame Fortune.") I find it an extremely interesting card....and also somewhat inscrutable....seems to have a lot of different meanings including "ill health" as well as spiritual poverty. Aside from its obvious reference to material troubles, Waite adds it is a card of "love" and "lovers." In this frame of reference I have heard it defined as a card of infidelity, which explains its being attributed to "hidden desire."

Having to post quickly so have not read other replies yet but...I see the ongoing symbolism of 5 Pents as being either locked out (perhaps by your own choice), of a place you'd want to be, or locked in somewhere, being kept away from a place you'd go to if you could. So at least in those terms, both guys have chosen to keep themselves out of the life they'd prefer, and keep themselves locked IN (in the closet!) so as not to go where they truly desire to be. A hard path to follow, same as aninterraci couple, or a relationship where difference of religion would make them castaways, etc. so I see this as their approach to the desire, and am not sure if this would be the desire itself. What position was it in?

Easy. This person needs help.. I havent read the initial comment and i will just resume to the card meaning. When someone wants 5 of pentacles from you it means that person is in absolute need of help but wont ask it or share it with anyone out of pride. The most important element in here is the pride because if in 5 of pentacles people outside are facing the cold with dignity, in 6 of pentacles they sit down and beg for help without caring about what others think.

I am not a believer in "pride". It is actually at the root of most psychological problems and often flies in the face of "truth." If a person is ill, that is a different story. It has nothing to do with pride or truth. Personally, I am still trying to figure out how this card represents either "illness" or "hidden desire" except by a big stretch of the imagination. If what you are saying is the person needs financial help, I totally see that. If I were considering the card in a reading the first issue I would approach would be that of financial problems, not sexual or psychological.

I don't buy into many of the "pre-packaged" story lines in decks with illustrated minor cards, so I'm open-minded about different ways to view the 5 of Pentacles. Usually I follow elemental, astrological and numerical correspondences. In this case, Five causes disruption in mundane routine, "rocking the foundation," so to speak, like an earthquake) while nimble, footloose Mercury in plodding, conformist Taurus suffers mental anguish due to being completely "out of its element:" the dilemma won't be resolved entirely by "mind-over-matter" finesse; some "heavy lifting" is implied. Crowley said that this card (titled "Worry") has the effect of intense strain coupled with long-continued inaction, a "Damned if you do, and damned if you don't" kind of situation. The "hidden desire" may simply be to make all of this profound anxiety go away as quickly and painlessly as possible. I certainly don't see any kind of rueful second-guessing about the break-up going on here.

Maybe it simply means that he is agonizing over his hidden desire.

In this case, the other man ended up contacting the sitter in the form of an indirect text message. The exchange didn't go very far, it seems as if the other man just wanted to hear the sitter reply.

I agree with Griz in that the man wants to be very close to the sitter, but just cannot due to his comfortable lifestyle that he's settling for.
