Most bizare deck?

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 28 Jan 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Ok... While we are listing decks...

What is the most bizarre, outrageously obscure, weird, fantastically silly, too embarrassed to show in public or just plain *odd* deck you own, have seen or have heard of? (Preferably include a link so we can all stare, laugh and make the deck feel like the true freak of nature that it is...)

I have mentioned mine a few times before but will bandy it around a few times more...
The Tarot Erotica **Warning : Contains Nudity**

Come on guys, I know you can out do me...

Kiama  28 Jan 2002
Well, I think that deck definately is one of the most bizarre I have seen. *Kiama laughs* It also took me about 2 minutes to work out what on Earth was going on in the Wheel of Fortune! ;p

I think this deck is worth owning just for the sheer hell of it!

I've got to nominate the One World Tarot. You fall asleep reading this Tarot. Its a testament to a lack of creativity. Its a deck of nothing but computer generated art.

http://www.tarotpassages.com/oneworld.htm

No soul, not a smidgen. Nada, Nothing. Zilch. Zero.

Given a choice of reading with this deck or grinding my teeth on the sidewalk, I read with the deck. I did, however, think about it.

Kayne:

You've certainly posed an interesting question. The Erotica is quite odd indeed, but for sheer astoundingly weird erotica, you might want to check out these scans of Charles Pry's "Diableries Tarot":

http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/images/d-decks/diableriescards.gif

(*WARNING: the samples provided at the link above are *very* sexually explicit!!)

Explicitly erotic tarots in general are more likely to strike most peole as "weird," I expect. Here's another odd one, that was actually published in a gay pornography magazine (oops, make that "a journal of alternative sexual practices") as a set of punch-out major arcana cards. It's called "The Uraniun," and it has bizzare little humorous "afirmations" on the back of each card that adds to its weirdness:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/images/u-decks/uraniuncards.gif

The samples provided for this deck are also somewhat explicit. However, when I made these scans, I deliberately selected cards with somewhat "tamer" images, as I was reviewing the cards for another website at the time, and the webmistress preferred not to have too much graphic sexuality portrayed.

Here's a smattering of other erotic decks that might meet the definition of "bizzare"; all probably should have an "adults only" warning, although in some cases, the less explicit examples from a deck were deliberately chosen:

i Tarocchi di Eva:
http://www.tarotgarden.com/boutique/images/evacards.gif

Manara: the Erotic Tarots:
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/images/m-decks/manaracards.gif

MNC Tarot:
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/images/m-decks/mnccards.gif

Tarocco dei Giardini di Priapo:
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/images/p-decks/priapocards.gif

(Scans of the Priapo are also available on Aeclectic at http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/giardini-di-priapo/cards.html)

For non-erotic decks, there are any number of surrealistic, humorous, and oddly-themed decks that might qualify. For example, Menegazzi's famous "Le Calzature Fantastiche" uses decorated shoes to depict the archetypes of the major arcana:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/images/c-decks/calzaturecards.gif

The recently-published "Gummibear Tarot" parodies the standard R/W images by replacing people with candy bears:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/boutique/images/gummibearcards.gif

Amerigo Folchi's "i Tarocchi nei Colori della Toscana," commissioned by an Italian watchmaker, combines traditional Marseilles imagery with famous archetecture of Tuscany, and adds in... wristwatches. Strangely enough, it works:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/boutique/images/toscanacards.gif

And John Kolyer's "Cynic's Tarot" is a very model of weirdness:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/images/c-decks/cynicscards.gif

The list could go on and on; if you're interested in exploring more decks of this type on your own, you can visit the Tarot Garden search engine page at:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearch.html

...And try searches under the following categories:

Abstract / Absurdist / Surreal
Comics / Animation / Cartoons / Anime / Manga
Erotic
Humor
Novelty / Unusual Themes

Enjoy the scans!

i think the strangest deck i own has got to be the phantasmagoric theater tarot. the author definitely lives in his own little world. it definitely has humor in the deck but i'd never do a reading for anyone with it. it's just way too strange.

Greenman  28 Jan 2002
hell, i'm Pagan! i'm not afraid of a little eroticism.
'bizarre' to me means alot more than just nudity in a tarot deck. so with that in mind, i have to cast my vote for the H.R. Gieger deck.
although i really don't think this is truly a 'tarot' deck, just twenty two very disturbing images from a very dark artist. but it's sold as tarot, so i guess that qualifies it.
and that's not to say that i don't like his work. i been... 'intrigued' by it ever since he did the album cover for ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery". and i think his work on the movie 'Alien' changed the way horror movies are made.
but it is surely 'bizarre'!

Pollux  29 Jan 2002
Well, get these...

The Tarot Erotica sucks! I could never read from that, I could never touch that, I wouldn't even buy that1 Augh!!! And the card back is really disturbing to me, even more than the cards themselves!
Someone spoke of an Hermit mansturbating somewhere... I wonder why the author didn't think of this in such a deck! ;)

The One world is dull, really. Those chakras on the High Priestess mean nothing.

Those Uraniuns are not that bad, even though that erected dick on the Wheel of fortune is a bit... unsuited. It doesn't match to me the card. The wheel might have been posed upon it! :P

Eva cards are cheesy and ugly! Manara's almost unimpairing; don't like mncards or what it is; Giardini di priapo need no comment. I'm sick. the Calzature's is ridiculous and cheesy too!

Well, we got a consistent colection of "I'm never going to buy one" deck, IMHO!!! :P

I can add none but
http://www.trigono.com/Tarocchi/tarocco-di-sissi-di-amerigo-folchi.htm
this tarocchi di sissi are just UGLY!

Look at this

Pollux, I like tarocco di Sissi also!

Well, being a collector, I often buy decks from everywhere I go. I bought this one deck in the south of France in '95. God awful tacky deck with lots of cheesecake nudes. I bought it without benefit of seeing it first.

YUKK.

See, now I was warned: "The Internet will lead you into pornography!" And I retorted that I was just going to go onto one little tarot forum and so there was no way I'd be lookin' at any dirty picture. No siree.

And here I am. Trying to look at the dirty pictures. Can't get my brower to go to that site though. Do you suppose my parents have somehow made it inaccessable to me? ;)

kayne  01 Mar 2002
Thirteen: These cards definately qualify as bizare... I am not too sure about the flies that seem to swarm around the Empress... I quite like this deck actually. They satisfy the 'minimalist' in me...
btw - just tried that link that didn't work for you Thirteen, and it didn't work for me either...

Jewel: I merely want to carefully exam which deck magdalene is refering to so that a greater understanding can be developed and fostered within. (LOL)

Razz  02 Mar 2002
I guess these aren't quite bizarre, but I thought that at first seemed strange: the whimiscal deck and the Fairy Tale deck. IN fact I just got them and thought they were so cool. Somehow I don't think kids would like them though. Though I guess they might be amused by the drawings.

It struck me though that Sleeping Beauty representing Death was on the edge and slightly bizarre.

I can't really make out the Empress either, but I'm probably going to get this deck. Reasonably priced and I love some of it's imagry. And you just can't beat that Death card, can you?

Now about those links that I can't seem to connect to--any help out there? I'm trying to do some serious research here ;D

Luned  03 Mar 2002
Thirteen - I can't connect to any of the Tarot Garden pages either (cannot find server). I seem to recall reading something about them having technical problems lately, but they were all supposed to be fixed up by now.......

Zhritza  02 Apr 2002
For good weirdness, I *love* the Stick Figure Tarot, which you can view at aeclectic. It was a very limited edition though, and I am poor... :( That deck works visually. I don't know why.

truthsayer  05 Apr 2002
the neuzit/new age tarot is pretty bizarre straight thru the whole deck. before this i thought the phantasmagoric theater was pretty strange. nope! normal compared to this! the pictures remind me of aztec hieroglyphics.

lunar_rabbit  05 Apr 2002
Have you guys seen the Halloween deck? One of my friends has it, and I think it's hilarious. The suits are bats, pumpkins, ghosts and imps. I don't know if anyone would actually use it for a reading, but it's really cute.

My friend says in her best Miss Cleo accent, "Oh deeah.. You be gettin the six o' punkins... that is nuttin but trouble girl!"

In fact, I've been trying to get said friend to visit us on this site!

:-D

Zhritza  05 Apr 2002
I beg your pardon, but I use the Halloween Tarot for readings. :D It works very well for me. I will admit that I've never seen fit to do a reading for anyone else with it, and I have trouble imagining that. Hopefully someone out there would appreciate having a reading done with the deck... someone very special. })

Luned  06 Apr 2002
I have the Halloween Deck, haven't had a chance to work with it (so many decks, so little time!), but do know of others who use it as their primary reading deck and, like Qolus, find it works very well. Hmmm, perhaps I should get it out again and introduce myself........

gypsyrose  06 Apr 2002
I've also got the Halloween Tarot and it's one of my favorites. I love a deck with a sense of humor! My readings with it have been pretty accurate too.

Zhritza  07 Apr 2002
Kipling West, creator of the Halloween, has a knack for summing up the cards' meanings with Halloween-related archetypes we (in USA/UK/Oz) may recognize immediately: Temperance is a witch, contentedly mixing potions; the Hanged Man is an upside-down scarecrow, with two crows echoing Odin's Hugin and Muninn (sp?); the Chariot is a fancy hearse driven by a smiling pumpkinhead. The minor arcana are harder to sum up here, but similarly intuitive. It can be a more utile deck than you might think....

Alex  23 Aug 2002
and looking at the durty pictures I started wondering if I would not feel *a bit* embarassed reading for someone else_ or even for myself_ with one of those erotic decks: "this card pictures a priest receiving *verbal* service from a naked woman..." it tells me that your situation right now is... (!!!!!!!!)

Oh well, has anyone found any use for erotic decks other than... perhaps looking at them?

Blessings

my weirdest deck is the stick people tarot. i think it's so funny when i pull it out with a client.......they look at me like "are you serious???"

In the right company I have read with them.
But I agree with Jeannette also.

marmalade  24 Aug 2002
all those decks are great (in their own way...). its so interesting to see the different ways the symbolism of the cards can be portrayed. i don't think i'd ever be able to bring myself to buy one of those erotic decks though. :|

i wish i had known about the stick people tarot sooner... does anyone know if it's still available anywhere? it look absolutley amazing!!

I like wacky decks (Oh how I would love a copy of the Stick Figure Tarot or the Hello Kitty one.!)

I think the quirkiest deck I own right now is the Wonderland Deck. Followed by the Oz. I like them both- thats why I have them. The stranger the concept that still follows the tarot structure- the better.

jade  24 Aug 2002
i posted a new thread about the stick figure tarot and then emailed the thread to lar (the creator) so if you want him to know how much you want this deck.....that's the thread to tell him in!!!

I own the manara, i saw a card of the chariot and that just made me so curious about the rest. Some of the cards I find original, but some are not special at all, just showing nudity.
Maybe weirdest thing is the lwb that gives the meanings without giving any attention to what is on the card. I don't see myself reading with this deck. This naked woman means take care...that naked woman means success...

I read somewhere you should use the deck with someone special, draw a card and reenact what's in the card. that could be fun with the girls riding on horseback: no honey you are the horse today. :D

I've always been of the opinion -- and this is pure speculation, mind you -- that the Manara is one of those tarots that was designed primarily to showcase the existing work of the artist. That is, the illustrations had already been created, and perhaps even published, for other works, and the deck editors simply went through the available pix and selected some that roughly suggested a stereotypical association for the card.

Although the minors are illustrated and the "trumps" are not double-ended, I personally tend to think of the Manara more as a tarock deck than as an actual tarot intended for reading and related purposes.

Jeannette, please forgive me but I must beg to differ... since the publisher saw fit to include a LWB with divinatory meanings and spread(s), it does seem that it was indeed intended for reading, although I agree (although you don't actually say this) that if this was their intended purpose, they have failed miserably. :)

I think you're right: with many cards I think, why would he choose that image for that card ? But this would explain it. Funny, I think I'll keep it just because it's so different from my other decks.

I think Tarot of the Dead is just kinda goofy. Reminds me of Grateful Dead T-shirts for some reason...

Ladyhawke

Violet Gargoyle  26 Aug 2002
I liked the Tarot of the Dead!

Being one who decorates the house and celebrates in a sort of Day of the dead/Samhain/Nightmare Before X-Mas style from September 21st (or earlier) and leaves up most of the same decorations until after the New Year (Ostara is still after the New Year's, right?) I could have kicked myself for not seeing this deck sooner.

So I just ordered it! Thanks Ladyhawke~

No, Lee -- you're quite right. All indications are that Lo Scarabeo is targeting the Manara to the "reading/divination" crowd. It's just that this is one deck where I absolutely can't make the connection, personally (and my ability to mentally reenvision anything as a potential reading deck is pretty strong). It just feels so much like a "novelty erotic" deck to me, like the Druuna (which is definitely a tarock deck), that I can't think of it in any other way anymore.

For you nudity fans, take a gander at the Erotica Tarot by Lori Walls. Other than that, I have to vote for One World. It seems to be in a world of its own.

The most bizarre decks in my collection are the "Black Tarot" by Luis Rojo and the "H. R. Giger Tarot" (yes, I never thought about adding this one to my collection).
